View Full Version : Master and Servant 2D Entry: Martin Sahlin

03 March 2005, 08:41 AM
Martin Sahlin has entered the Master and Servant 2D.

Challenge Page (

Latest Update: Final Image: preceptor (

done and done. i even came up with a title. no big changes, a little head tweak on the servant, better shadows and some background fiddling.. i did a little reliquary that hung from the chain on his arm, but i dropped it again. i guess he already has enough of those things :P

all in all this has been a fun challenge, and a fun introduction to cgtalk. it's the first time i've posted anything here at all, and it's been great checking out all the WIP's and stuff. i'll be back for sure :)

oh, and tons of hugs and kisses to hanne because without her help i could never have finished this in time!

03 March 2005, 08:06 PM (

who would've thought picking colours would be that tough! well, these ones are just terrible. at least the composition looks kinda like i wanted it to. got to come up with a good background, i was thinking something temple-ish, just kind of foggy and merely hinted at.. but i dunno. gotta test some..

03 March 2005, 11:06 PM (

vroomvroom.. haven't really tried this style before, but i guess it won't hurt to sketch things out properly for once. makes the wip-thread a little more interesting anyway :)

takes some time tho..

03 March 2005, 04:39 AM
Very good start with the lineart. Even your concept sketch look some misfire with the colors but you just cant ruin lineart like that!

Looking forward to your technique and artpieces

03 March 2005, 02:20 PM (

some more lines.. timeconsuming stuff...

03 March 2005, 02:31 PM
This looks really interesting. Very thourough lineart, love it.

It already has a great "feel" to it. He looks troubled and burdend. I figure there is a good story behind this... please do tell.

Keep it up!

03 March 2005, 02:52 PM
Woah jolly! looks great but dont you want to develop your concepts a bit or wait for some feedback?! Your a speed demon! Good luck

03 March 2005, 03:21 PM
haha, far from it. i work so fiendishly slow that if i wait for feedback there's like no way i'll be even close to finished in time :) well, in all seriousness i suppose i should, but i kinda liked the pose, and i'll work something out with the sucky colours as i go along.. it's easy to be fast in the beginning of a project, but when i've done so much that there's actually something to look at, that's about all i do.. for every 5 minutes i paint, there's like 55 minutes of trance-like staring, pondering all kinds of unimportant details...

03 March 2005, 09:37 PM
god start, you seem to know where you're going.

03 March 2005, 09:39 PM
that is sum excellent lineart, and the colour rough is great too.

i'll keep an eye on ur thread!!

03 March 2005, 12:35 AM
Like it was said before, an amazing lineout. Post regular so we could drool some more :) good luck in this challenge!

03 March 2005, 02:47 AM
Just thought I'd comment on this before I go to bed (what are you doing up and awake, by the way, you night owl you!).

The concept is very intriguing - I'm liking where this is going. Even better, though, is your eye for details. Definitely subscribing to this one.

03 March 2005, 02:58 AM
Wow, so much detail! I love the color scheme and the hand of the master resting on his somewhat sickly-looking servant. Very cool concept so far. I'm loving it!

03 March 2005, 09:05 AM
Beautiful linework! Can't wait to see the full detail sketched out and to watch it evolve...

03 March 2005, 09:11 AM
Nice Line work. My only critque so far would be about his eyes. They look as though they are staring off into space, I dont know if thats what you wanted him to do instead of staring at the person below him. It might be too early to say such a thing, but other wise keep it up. Like everyone said it looks great so far.

03 March 2005, 09:56 AM
Nice line art Martin. I like the armor and the whole character. Promising work. I'll watching!

My Master and Servant (
---------------------- (

03 March 2005, 05:22 PM
Wow, the line art and attention to detail are just amazing so far. Really nice work! I do agree with Corey, though, about the man's face. There's not a strong emotional component to it just her, he is looking rather blank. How does he wear the power that he so obviously weilds? Is he tyrranical or benevolent. Is he punishing his servant or rewarding him? Is he pained by how he treats others? Or is he so accustomed to power that he hardly notices the servant? I'm sure you have a clearer idea about the answers to these questions, and I'm sure a clearer facial expression would help convey them to us, the viewers, as well.
But anyhow, really gorgeous line work, can't wait to see how it progresses!

03 March 2005, 05:25 PM
Hé,I'm not going to be so originla by saying this i think, but great lineart man!!!Great start!
I think this is going to be really great!bell back, good luck!!!

03 March 2005, 11:12 PM (

i got a little bored with the hyperdetailed lines, so i did a little colour test for fun. i decided i want the master kinda rembrandty - all light concentrated on the face, and the resy of it kind of red and dark. i'm thinking something velvet-ish for the robe, possibly with some metallic inlay-thingies. found some nice paintings of old venetian doges with some expensive-looking cloaks that might fit.. if i can pull it off anyway..

as for the face i've got it all pretty much thought out, i'll share the story behind it a bit later.. i was planning to save the face for last, because i'm usually such a face-junkie, but most likely i'll end up starting with it anyway.. :P we'll see..

03 March 2005, 11:19 PM
Crazy. I'm not usually crazy about the armour I see a lot of people putting onto their characters. But I gotta say I like the work you've put into this character's costume. Especially like his right shoulder plate ( our left! :D ) looks good, and I like the colours chosen so far. He looks very old, bitter and lost. The way I'm reading it anyway.

03 March 2005, 11:35 PM
i think its very good. The one thing i would consider though, is continue to paint without the line work, or just turn it back on for refernce of placement. i think you'll find the art work falls apart without the lines. Work on the form etc so that it stands on its own without the linear and youll get a stronger piece. Anyways, hope im being constructive.

03 March 2005, 11:58 PM
yea, i agree totally. making the basic shapes and shadows work first is like the most important thing, and the lines are only distracting there

03 March 2005, 12:00 AM
sweeet details !

03 March 2005, 12:36 AM
Wicked lineart; I absolutely love the elderly man. Can't wait to see it finished. :)

03 March 2005, 08:12 PM (

almost done with the lines.. this picture is becoming like this huge orgy in stuff i don't really do a lot. or ever.. which is kinda entertaining in a weird way. i usually paint with my canvas on the floor, and wind up with about equal amounts of paint on the canvas and myself. so every once in a while, doing some ultra-neat thing like this one is a welcome change.. all those mechanical bits are a totally alien concept to me, but i think they sort of look like i imagined them - unpleasant and all over..

03 March 2005, 08:15 PM
excellent lineart,i luv!!

03 March 2005, 08:30 PM
Oh, this looks really good. The line art is very accurate and your attention to detail is superb. I hope you add the item on his back, as shown in the concept sketch, I think it will even out the whole image and judging by the rest of your art, will look good too. Just a thought, really good work so far, good luck!

03 March 2005, 09:11 PM
the drawing is impressive. Really good!
but don`t you think the eagle shoulder armor looks too much like judge dredd's one? ;)

03 March 2005, 10:06 PM
Nice work Martin!!
Great Line art! You have managed to get the perspective and foreshortening right on! The only thing that looks a bit odd is the servants eyes / forehead region, something about the angle there that don't match up with the chin?

Keep posting, hop you'll win!

03 March 2005, 10:42 PM (

yea, true. actually, i think the problem was that the chin was kinda off, so i stretched it a little bit, and it already looks a lot better. gotta love a quick and easy fix :)

THE Wizard
03 March 2005, 10:52 PM
This is smoe very heavy Warhammer kind of thing, and I like it

My MaSteR&ServAnT 2D (

04 April 2005, 06:20 AM
Nice! But im thinking the old mans eyes are very blindlooking(maybe that was the point?).
Hes noot really looking anywhere right now. Should be very easy to adjust though.
(just my 2 cents.)

btw är du svensk? Sahlin låter så...

04 April 2005, 07:05 AM
yeah..the old man looks abit bored. nt maste material.... and fisrt thing i thought was judge dredd when i saw him (the shoulder plate). But othrrwise great line detaisl and looking forward to colour

04 April 2005, 07:08 AM
I concur, your line-work is excellent!

04 April 2005, 11:35 AM
it IS kinda judge dreddy, i suppose, which is all coincidental since the image i really wanted to rip off was the ark of the covenant from the indiana jones movie (or the way i remembered it anyway) :) i was thinking about making the wings more.. "soft" sort of - rounder lines, more ornate swirly stuff, and less like armor.. so i might just go ahead and do that if it helps to reduce the dredd-factor, since that's not really what i was going for..

about the eyes, and the general expression - yes, he is supposed to look kind of detached, but i haven't really put any work into that part, and i probably won't until i start coloring, so just consider him a placeholder for now :) if you can't wait to see how he'll (most likely) look in the end, check out christopher lee in the first lord of the rings movie, the part on top of the tower, where he goes "so you have chosen death" as gandalf jumps off and escapes. full of contempt and evil evil stuff, but sort of absent - eyes glazed over, his mind too deep in his plots and schemes and personal power trips to be more than partially aware of everyone around him.

edit: just ja, sverige-grejen ja.. jo jag kommer ifrån umeå

04 April 2005, 12:27 AM (

i decided my first concept wasn't all that bad after all, just a little, eh.. unrefined :) so i did this little color concept thingie based off it, and i think these are pretty much the colors i'll stick with. the picture is a little bit off balance now, but once i add his back item it should be okay, hopefully.

04 April 2005, 02:47 PM (

finally the linework is finished, for now anyway.. way way overdetailed and stuff, but that's life, and it wasn't THAT hard to do either. besides, doing it this style actually had one great benefit - with no shading whatsoever, all faults and flaws are a lot more clear and easy to correct.

04 April 2005, 03:20 PM
these are great detail u have superb fine art skills and a very nice colour palette choice too. is that a sheath on the sword and y is it yellow? if it is then are u going to put fine details on it too? could be a very nice touch.

forgive me if u have already mentioned it but what are u going to have in the rest of the sceen... what exactly is the backgroud of?

this is great im subscribing now... cant wait to see it pan out!!

great work:thumbsup:

04 April 2005, 04:23 PM
great line art.. feels so clean and crisp, almost like you dont want to dirty it with colour :p
great imagination with designs etc..

04 April 2005, 08:04 PM
Hey, That's some impressive line art you've got going on there. Your job to finish will surely be made a whole lot easier now you have such a definitive foundation. The colours look good, looking forward to seeing you progress.
Keep it up. :buttrock:

04 April 2005, 09:58 PM
time for a little different update this time, just to let everyone in on why the next "real" update might be a little late (tho feel free to keep watching and commenting, because i WILL finish it) here's a glimpse of my new treasure (and of course myself looking like a complete dork, but hey, you all would too, so no laughing!)

i suppose it does kinda fit with the challenge theme too, so here goes:
welcome to the world, kalle!

04 April 2005, 10:23 PM
It looks very much like the artwork for Warhammer 40,000, and I wouldn't be surprised to find this in one of their publications. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, perhaps you should check it out. It would definitely give you inspiration...something to strive for or something to stay away from, depending on your tastes.

Just to throw out an idea: make the older man very detached from both the viewer and his servant and put all the emotion into the servant's eyes...looking directly at the viewer.

No one should apologize for looking like a dork when holding their newborn. Congrats!

04 April 2005, 04:41 AM
ur quite welcome to stop... infact if u dont im going to banish u from this site (i dont have the power but ill find a way) if u dont spend every second u have with Kalle!

congrats man... the best of luck... with everything

p.s. i hope all this CG training has helped prepare u for the late nights ahead, lol

04 April 2005, 07:39 AM
a well earned break... i really didnt think u would take my advice seriously... but im glad u did

04 April 2005, 11:43 PM (

wellwell.. it seems like kalle is the cool and calm type (for now) so i had time to start coloring a bit, despite the looming banishment threats. o.O

the cloth is just a placeholder, and i'll add some hammered-in kinda subtle and tiny decor to the shoulderpad thingie (if time allows) but other than that, this section is pretty much finished...

edit: oh, and by the way, never ever let games anywhere near your computers. i just noticed after finishing this bit that my gamma settings somehow have been totally messed up, so it might just look freakishly dark to you guys...

04 April 2005, 12:05 AM
congratulation on the new baby...and great job on the challenge... waiting for more.

04 April 2005, 01:38 AM
The rendering of the shoulder-pad-thingie looks really sweet... and so does Kalle! Congratulations!!! :-)

04 April 2005, 04:01 AM
this really looks interesting. will be watching. cheeers man

04 April 2005, 09:25 AM
Hey there! Congrats on the baby :) Love your work so far man, so many details to work with. It's going to look awesome.

04 April 2005, 10:05 AM
Very cool

MAkes me wanna go and get some miniatures, looks awesome and congrats with the baby

04 April 2005, 11:29 AM
Really nice.I likes very much.Good congratulations on your baby too.

04 April 2005, 12:24 PM
Ah, another contender rears its head! Oh, the competition! :D

That's a really interesting line-art technique. I've never done lineart but I'm tempted to give it a try. Brilliant.

Yes, the colouring looks slightly dark, but then again I'm not using my own monitor (this one is TFT - urgh!) It might be OK if you're planning on sticking highlights in there - bright highlights from the right and lesser complementary backlighting from the left. Your concept colour scheme looks good, but I'd be tempted to re-do the servant's green clothing for a more coherent effect. I know the green is subtle, but even so the colour scheme would benefit from slightly less variation in the main characters. There's always the background if you want to add more colour variety, and maybe even splash colour onto the main characters by way of reflection and highlight. Just an idea.

One more thing, the servant's face appears slightly skewed - too flat on the nearside, as if his features have rotated too much towards the viewer. Hmm... it may be just his eye being a tad out of position (I'm not a face expert :) )

Other than that I think you're on your way to great things

04 April 2005, 12:54 PM
The rendering looks awesome - the hourglass must take you an insane amount of time to color so much details..and in such a high quality too :)

04 April 2005, 01:34 PM
ok colour looks fine to me.... it a very nice detail.. i love the slight creative touches u put in ur work.... this is just one example but the hourglass.... and then u take it to the next level and attach it with string... great thinking

was this all u ahve painted or was this just a detail?

04 April 2005, 01:43 PM
first sweep of colour loking great.. an dcongrats on the baby... GO DAD!

04 April 2005, 05:29 PM
First off, congratulations on the baby!

I really like your piece. Being both a Warhammer 40K & detail junkie, it appeals to me.
I can't really think of anything to ad other than keep up the good work. The shoulder detail looks very promising and I am excited to see how this turns out. :)

04 April 2005, 12:23 AM
One more thing, the servant's face appears slightly skewed - too flat on the nearside, as if his features have rotated too much towards the viewer. Hmm... it may be just his eye being a tad out of position (I'm not a face expert :) )

yea, this is a clear cut case of a darling that needs some serious killing.. i wanted that socket-weirdness on the back of his skull to show, even tho it really shouldn't with the face at that angle. i tried to justifiy keeping it with some "well maybe the socket isn't perfectly centered at the back" argument, but it just makes the head look weird, so i'll rework it. i'm just trying to NOT do the faces yet, since i usually just spend ages doing them first of all, and then i grow bored with the rest of the picture and never finish it.. :P

as for the warhammer thing, interestingly enough it isn't really the main inspiration for this picture. i do paint miniatures (i even won gold in the UK GD awards 2003, yay me!) and Kopinski (all you non warhammer-savvy people MUST check out his work!!) is like a god to me, but the image that really influenced this picture is actually something a bit different. I was at a funeral, and i noticed when we were all leaving that up on that little balcony (where i guess the priest is supposed to stand) they had put this WEIRD ornate gold chandelier-like thing that just caught my eye. it was covered in skulls, and instead of candles it had three hourglasses strapped to it, held by a skeleton with a flower (!) growing out of it's skull. i remember thinking that fantasy ain't got nothing on reality sometimes. you don't have to look very far out at all to see some outlandish stuff :)

04 April 2005, 12:39 AM
Congrats Dad :)

the shoulder part is really good ... it makes me eager to see your amazing cloak of detail slowly spread over master and servant.

ill just leave one of my 684 eyes here if u dont mind :D

04 April 2005, 01:02 AM
the level of detail, is superb and very original... may i ask wich software u use?

and if u use a tablet ?

04 April 2005, 02:10 PM
CONGRATS ON THE BABY! as for the contest. Nice concept, I like the color approach you've taken, waiting for more :)

04 April 2005, 11:52 PM (

bah. i did it again. but hopefully there's enough stuff in the picture to keep it interesting until it's finished. if not, i PROMISE i won't do the servants face until everything else is perfect :)

edit: just a little disclaimer - this is nowhere near done, i just felt like posting some progress, so don't kill me because the color and saturation kinda sucks. he'll look a lot more alive in a few days :)

04 April 2005, 08:30 PM (

i decided to leave the face for later and get busy on the metallic parts.. i just wanted to post this WIP to see if you guys think they work. the book is a bit dark i think, but i'll add some steam/smoke from the backpack-machinery around that area, so i think it'll even out in the end.

04 April 2005, 08:38 PM
jag tycker att det ser jatte bra ut. heh i'm not that good in Swedish. but you put a lot of work here in the details.
grattis pa barnen! ( was that correct...?)
good luck!

04 April 2005, 09:27 PM
hehe, nära nog :)

04 April 2005, 06:41 AM
fantastic... u have a true ability to realistically paint materials... know of any tuts lol

04 April 2005, 08:48 AM
amazing work! I like all texture. They look real. A lot of detail going on! Looking forword to see when it finish

04 April 2005, 09:22 AM
mad details dude

and corgrats for da baby!

04 April 2005, 11:59 PM (

added some hair, and fooled around with the expression a bit. he looks a bit more agreeable now i think, tho less mean than i originally intended. i haven't decided yet if that's a good or bad thing, but we'll see i guess... i'll probably have to cut just about every corner there is just to finish in time anyway, so the tweaking will have to wait :P

05 May 2005, 07:39 PM
Excellent and solid work. Love your attention to every last tiny detail. keep on rocking!

05 May 2005, 07:53 PM
amazing detail!!
excellent work.:bounce:   can't wait for ur final image.

05 May 2005, 09:29 PM
haven´t seen this entry before.. looks amazing! good work on the details and lighting :thumbsup::thumbsup: really brilliant! :)

05 May 2005, 09:37 PM
Absolutely stunning work, as mentioned earlier, it looks very Warhammer 40,000 from Games Workshop. Check it out, actually I think they should check you out! You'll give them some inspiration! Cant wait to see the whole thing. Its simply amazing! oh and congrats on the baby bro!

I hope you have a few seconds to Check out mine and let me know what you think : (http://showthread.php/?t=234420)

All feedback very appreciated!!

05 May 2005, 12:20 AM (

thanks for the nice comments! i'm having some trouble finding time to work on this, but i'm really gonna try my hardest to get it finished in time. or well, finished enough anyway. i could probably go on adding stuff forever.. the robe is still just a placeholder. i haven't found a suitable reference for it yet, but thankfully cloth is both fun and fast to do, so that's like the one thing in the painting that i'm not totally stressed out over (yet anyway:))

05 May 2005, 12:24 AM
Look very good so far! I really like the details. you are very good.

I look foreward to see the final result.

Keep up your good work!

Good luck!

05 May 2005, 12:26 AM
wow! this is!what i really want to say! :D :D :D

very amazing detail work ...and he looks mean enough :)

i really hope u find time to finish this

05 May 2005, 08:48 AM
Great details on the guy's face man, hope you'll get to finish it all at the same level of details. Awesome!

05 May 2005, 09:46 AM
Wow, really great update! I love the textures and the metal, this is going to be fantastic finished, Keep going!

05 May 2005, 07:52 AM
Its coming along brilliantly, I really like the armour and the detail you have added to everything.

Keep the updates coming

05 May 2005, 02:52 PM (

i started on the clothing a bit, and i'm pretty happy with it so far. it looks a bit pajama-ish perhaps, but the skull-necklace thingie he's supposed to be wearing should counter that, hopefully.. the sword (among other things) will get a lot of stuff added to it, but it's pretty passable right now, so i'll leave it and come back to it when (if) i know i have time

05 May 2005, 04:17 PM
great details on the old man!:)

05 May 2005, 04:29 PM
I like the maze of armor he has to fight with...nice concept.

Is the armor the master?

05 May 2005, 07:02 AM
I stand in awe of your talent..

05 May 2005, 07:58 AM
Wow, the face of the master is a great painting, vey good work:thumbsup:

05 May 2005, 04:37 PM (

not much left on the master now, but i still have little hope of finishing this in time, especially now that i've got this other HUGE deadline to meet.. well, time will tell i guess :) the embroideries (weird word) look a lot better in higher resolution, but they still need some more work

05 May 2005, 05:26 PM
Amazing....oh,check out the older's expression!!

05 May 2005, 05:05 AM (

so... apart from the servants face, the characters are done. sort of. did i mention i hate deadlines? i had this elaborate idea for a background, but due to lack of time that one had to go, so i'd like to hear what you guys think of this new one? everyone kept going on and on about warhammer, so i thought he might as well get an army :) they're gonna be like shadows and silhouettes, with lots of banners and such (yes, i just came home from seeing kingdom of heaven, so sue me..!).

05 May 2005, 06:17 AM
Hey, monkeybeach, good to see you finding some time to work on this. How's life with Kalle? :)

Overall, things are looking really nice, and as solidly-rendered as ever. It may be kinda late to point this out (sorry) but it keeps looking to me like the master is balancing a book on the top of his head, with that near-tangent between the head and the bottom of the book. Cheating the book down a bit might help, if you have the time and see it as a problem.

Anyhow, good luck with that, and the servant's face, and getting the backdrop together!

05 May 2005, 08:24 AM
Wow Martin,

your image is going to be amazing when you are done great work.

05 May 2005, 10:02 AM
Lookin sweet man! Really like all the little trinkets he has strapped to him. Great rendering thus far. Don't forget to put a shadow under that hand on the servant's head.

05 May 2005, 10:28 AM
Dude, looks awesome, hope you'll get to finish it. Looks like you got some work to do on the background. Good luck, hope we'll get to see it finished. :bounce:

05 May 2005, 10:46 AM
First time I've seen your pic and must say it is great. I really love the eagle and snake on the mans chest. Exceptional detail. Best of luck.

05 May 2005, 11:12 AM
life with kalle's all great, thanks for asking :) he looks like a miniature football hooligan, and he's getting fat! about the book - yea, it definately has to come down a bit, and possibly change its tone as well.. originally i was gonna do some smoke and spooky glowy stuff around there to balance it all out, but it looked a bit weird, so it had to go..

05 May 2005, 06:54 PM (

i'm starting to like this background a bit :) loads more work to do still, fog and smoke, more little guys with sticks and so on... it's nice tho because soon i'm at the point where i could actually stop and post the whole thing as final without being ashamed of it, but i can still go on refining it. no rush, no pressure. which is nice :)

05 May 2005, 09:08 PM
amazing detail work!!! the composition and colours are workin good!!!

great work

my finished MASTER & SLAVE (

05 May 2005, 11:31 PM
:) one can see that you´re having fun here!:thumbsup::thumbsup: it´s looking GREAT!!!

05 May 2005, 11:37 PM
Some really great detailing on this - Keep at it!...

05 May 2005, 11:37 PM (

well. there it is, i'm happy with it. i will return to it for sure, i could easily work another month on it, but i feel i've spent enough time on it for now. so this is last call for suggestions. i'll be posting the final after work tomorrow.

i really like the tension that the background created, the build-up of energy.. i was a bit bored with the posing of the main characters before, but they look a LOT less static now, and make a lot more sense. now you (at least i hope it's not just me) can see how he's like the tip of this big wave about to come crashing down. he doesn't really have to be flailing that sword above his head in a dynamic action pose anymore, you know bad things are about to happen anyway. and that's the look i wanted him to have - threatening, but without trying to be...

done and done. i even came up with a title. no big changes, a little head tweak on the servant, better shadows and some background fiddling.. i did a little reliquary that hung from the chain on his arm, but i dropped it again. i guess he already has enough of those things :P

all in all this has been a fun challenge, and a fun introduction to cgtalk. it's the first time i've posted anything here at all, and it's been great checking out all the WIP's and stuff. i'll be back for sure :)

oh, and tons of hugs and kisses to hanne because without her help i could never have finished this in time!

ah. i knew there was something i forgot. i promised to post the story, didn't i! well, not that there's much of a STORY story, it's more of a setting really. i chose the (somewhat goofy) title 'preceptor' for the piece, since that's what i figure the master is. an authoritative teacher and leader laying down the law, the head of the choire, partly a religious figure really. he certainly looks iconic enough anyway :) he is acting as an emissary, and has just delivered a final ultimatum to some rebellious local leader that has grown to sure of his own power. it has not been well recieved, and the waiting armies are about to jump at eachother's throats.

his servant is grown from birth to serve, and he has been "betrayal proofed" - he only understands the masters command language, and he can't speak (he has some hightech eavesdropping gear tho, so he can record and playback juicy secrets for his master) and his system is constantly checked (that's what all the tubing does) for heightened adrenaline levels, or other stress hormones or mind affecting substances and such things that might be signs of treachery. the mechanical parts make him a little bit stronger, allowing him to carry around his masters stuff, or to stand perfectly still for days at a time (if the master needs an extra shelf or something) but their primary function is to lock up and disable the servant in the event of an assassination attempt. very neat..

the master keeps the servant around to enforce his appearance of being in absolute power. the servant is a reminder to those who think to much of themselves that in the presence of his master they are nothing. or possibly less..

well, that's about it. well actually there's probably about a thousand pages more stuff, but that's the beauty of imagination, it never ends. this hopefully gets you started at least :)

05 May 2005, 07:15 AM
wow, real nice one feral! and the rest of you lot too, for that matter :) there are some DAMN good entries in this challenge. it's like every other thread you check out is either an "oooh" or an "aaah", they're all that good. it's weird tho that there seems to be so comparatively few good entries in the 3d section, is that how it usually is in these challenges?

oh, and a little story footnote - i suppose it should be rather obvious from looking at him, or i have done a poor job, but the servant is of course fully intent on putting the "betrayal proofing" to the ultimate test. he wants the master dead, and he is determined to make it happen, no matter what..

05 May 2005, 02:45 PM
Wow! What else to say...
