LOVE the pixie washing up liuid instead of fairy. calender rocks and i too share your hatred for spider plants... what does that post it say??

05-06-2005, 02:15 PM
   this is siiiiick!

05-06-2005, 02:41 PM
Crackin update!
Love the background now - the colours, lighting and detail is soo-poib!
Nice touch with the pixie liquid bottle - the old, classic design too!
I tihnk the spider plant looks kinda bold in comparision to the shades and shapes of the background - maybe it stands out too much? I wont really know for sure until the characters come back from their tea break.

05-06-2005, 03:22 PM
lovely environment! no crits from me :applause:

05-06-2005, 03:38 PM
that looks excellent!

05-06-2005, 03:49 PM

Paul Davidson
Calisto - Thanks for the boost! :)
Walrus - You're right about the bit under the cabinets, I just checked my own, so I'll raise them a bit. And chuck in some bits of stuff that Kitty didn't clean up when ordered to do so! Old chips (fries ;) ) and maybe a sprout or two...
BlackDidThis - Eyepatch was a definite NO! So it's gone!
Smash.rs - Village people, Lol! Maybe Missy should be dressed as a construction worker!?
CameronGardner - Maybe 'Iams'? Do cats get that in the States?
Fiduciose - Coming back to the mistress later, I was getting to wound up with the faces and forgetting everything else... Ta!
Evil Gerbil
SavageCreature - Good point! The hat and patch don't really fit in with my original story either, so arividerci to them I feel!
CreatureMonkeyApe - Hehe! ;) I am going with the old headpiece, but thanks for the considered thoughts!
Art Renderman
Fiolka Alexandre - :)
T-lapia - It 20 x 30cm (ish) at 300dpi at the moment. Should have started bigger really...
AndyH - Ta matey!
Walrus (2)
Nebezial - or disappear up to another room in the house... ahem! Cough.... ;)
Wil - The post-it says Shopping list, Kitty Litter, Cream, Worming Tablets... I think I might change the last one though! :)
Calisto (2)
AndyH - Working on the spider plant ATM

Wow! Hope that's all! This is what happens when you don't update for ages! :D Thankyou all for checking this thread still! Going to check the rest of the Challenge now as I've not had much time to look at it all recently. TTFN

05-06-2005, 06:59 PM

05-06-2005, 08:11 PM

05-06-2005, 08:32 PM
This one is phenominal! keep up the good work.

05-06-2005, 10:25 PM
The background looks great! Nice poster. Is it yours? I also spy Sargent's Madame X, do I not? Very nice. I hope you're not detailing areas that will be covered by the characters... Would be sad to see those loving details disapear in the final.

05-06-2005, 11:45 PM
Jason - The pic on the cupboard is 'Sappho' by Charles Mengin. Read into that what you will! Heh! :) I AM trying to avoid covering things up...

05-06-2005, 11:53 PM
wow... very clean & detail is just enough... what can i say? hmmm... bring out the girls? hehehe

05-07-2005, 07:18 AM
lol, I knew it, everyone outside of NY has a "I love NY" product. No critiques from me, hope you finish on time. Keep it up:thumbsup: .

05-07-2005, 09:29 AM

05-07-2005, 11:42 AM
Tons of talent here, congratulations for a mmasterpiece, hope to see this finished

05-07-2005, 01:55 PM
Thought I'd posted here earlier, but I probably got a bit discombobulated by your brilliant artwork and totally forgot to do it!

05-07-2005, 07:22 PM
Hi there!

Awesome pic man! Sush a great details and that nice morning ambient light makes u feel u wanna sit there for a while and enjoy drinking coffee from those cups hanging there :D And watch a master and a servant ofcors.. hahaha. Really one of my favorites. keep up the great work man!

I've worked a bit more into the BG, tightening up the details. I'm still not happy with the lighting though, or the window view... I think I need to up the contrast a bit. But I need to pay a bit of attention to Kitty and Missy. And I'm still trying to decide what to put in the cupboard... I'm going to put a couple of dishes in a rack next to the sink, but I won't spend too long on them as Missy will hide a lot of that. Starting to burble now...

Any crits or suggestions really appreciated! :)

05-08-2005, 08:11 AM
Wow, Aly. What masterful rendering you got here. This is really nice. Congratulations. Really reminds me of the technique of some school books I used to have, and I loved the illustrations in them. Your final image could almost be a scene from "American Beauty", if you know what I mean...

A winner for sure!

05-08-2005, 08:42 AM
Woow.. my favourate part!! The Kitchen!! Aly you shouldn't have :)

I see that you have tried some calculation there.. but the opened closet door has an isometric perspective applied to it more than a two point.
Makes it look kinda broken and hanging.. Was that the intention?
Sort of like the hight on where it attaches to the cupboard is greater than it's hight to where the handle is.. when do to it being more distant it should have been visa versa

I KNOW you worked hard on it all, but it takes from the image (You know the "A chain is as strong as it's weekest link" thing?) Might be a better idea that you just keep it closed shut.

I prefferably hope that I am seeing wrong.

Amazing details when are the girls gonna come in the play? (Literally)

05-08-2005, 10:27 AM
Feckin ace stuff
Id say the BG is abart done now!
Great shadows, colours and detail, and the plant is integrated into the environment much better. It also looks very bright and 'morningy'
My only comment (and im being hella picky) is that i cant quite figure out what those dots are on the window. On seeing them, i had an idea - maybe cover the window in raindrops - as if to show that its just been raining and the sun has come out - that will make it seem even brighter, and up the 'britishness'.
I also agree with blackdidthis on the cupboard door. Maybe keep it closed? Most cupboard doors these days kinda close by themselves once they reach a certain angle - seeing this door open at such a small angle makes it look broken - gah - im babbling about the technicalities of cupboard doors now! SCHTOPP!

Class stuff - looking forward to seeing kitty and missy getting their workover.

05-08-2005, 10:52 AM
AH!!now i'ts great!!can't wait to see it finished!

05-08-2005, 11:11 AM
gosh that is looking real good. Reminds me something of a Norman Rockell pages!.

05-08-2005, 01:37 PM
Great work!! I love the subtle lighting, the reflections and soft shadows, Beautifull. Looking forward to the final piece.

05-08-2005, 05:14 PM
gee, I don't know, it looks cool enough to me :) and actually window view might not need that much work anyway. Yes a bit of tightening up would work I think but it looks fine as a blur in my opinion.

05-08-2005, 05:45 PM
Huh? Stunning work.
Love the style - French B.D (graphic novel) influenced?
Thinking of "Dany" (or was it?) comics and Mad magazine, dunno (?)
Amazing how perfect digital stuff comes out.

Love the roleplaying outfits.
Poor blondie :(

05-08-2005, 06:27 PM
Thats nice bg, amazing details man, looking forward to ur final!!:bounce:

05-08-2005, 10:52 PM
Lol, Aly, that level of perfetionism causes me pure pain, reminds me how much is undone yet on my piece. Keep on rocking, your kitchen has some nice classic touch, hehe, love that bart simpsoncup up there:thumbsup:
way kewl detailing. very brittish kitchen i might say, all for tea and lack of a coffeemachine ;)
keep it up mate, fantastic work on the background!

05-08-2005, 11:13 PM
wow your kitchen is fantastic! i love the pasta-glass...nice colors there :D

I think the lightning is very good as it is ... but if you are not happy ..well u know best  :D

I agree with black & picky Andy .... close the cupboard door! it looks better ... and i couldnt imagine missy's kitchen having a half open door somewhere :D :D :D

05-09-2005, 12:53 AM
wow. its turning out to be like one of those paintings at
NewYork's contemporary art museums.

top notch.

05-09-2005, 01:55 AM
Whooo Hooo! Gorgeous! I must admit, I agree with BlackDidThis. The perspective is a little off on the door of the cupboard, but I'd still move in if the house became available :D I was starting to get a smidge worried 'cause you hadn't posted in so long. (maybe it just seems longer than it was) Did you finally make a decision on the eyepatch? Can't wait to see it!

05-09-2005, 02:20 AM

really nice so far, good luck! :D

05-09-2005, 09:30 AM
Amazing details Aly. Love the work you've put into the background, little things like the shadow of the pasta canister complete with caustics are very nifty indeed.

Can't wait to see the details you put into the girls, hope to see some updates soon!

05-09-2005, 10:33 AM
i'd play with the trees a little more, maybe just a few specks of light green. it looks like it could be dirt on the window right now. clean it up! :D

05-09-2005, 10:43 AM
very cool!!

05-09-2005, 10:17 PM
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/8/5790/5790_1115677066_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/8/5790/5790_1115677066_large.jpg)

Another lighting test that has turned out a bit dark, but it's the kind of idea I'm after. Working on rendering Kitty up, but her arm needs changing as it's not right. In fact the drawing is all over the place at the moment. Her ears are going to be fluffy I think... And I'm going to change her expression a bit to more sulky; like she's really fed up with it all... but not completely! Hehe!

05-09-2005, 10:18 PM
Evil Gerbil
Nightwing - Are caustics those little spots of magnified light?

Thankyou sooo much folks! Time is running out now, and I've realised I've still go loads to do... gulp, aargh, eek, etc...

SavageCreature and Blackdidthis - good call on the cabinet door. I knew it was out, but kind of hoped no one would notice or it'd just... go away! :) I have since corrected it... Thankyou! :)

05-10-2005, 01:55 AM
if you were to ask me, i would say leave Kitty's expression as it is. i love it. the "I <3 KY" is a nice touch lol.

will you make prints available for purchase? i know i will definitely be interested. this is a really amazing piece. keep it up, and i hope you win.

05-10-2005, 06:10 AM
Lookin great!
I kinda prefer the bright, morning lighting myself - makes the whole affair look more 'ordinary' and domesticated - like its just a bit of everyday, innocent fun, the darker lighting makes it more sinister and seedy.... Is that what youre going for?
Also, i think kitty could use a little more work on her mouth - i dunno how to explain it, but it kinda looks pasted on.... Sorry to be so picky, but im trying to say something useful rather than shower it with praise!

Glad you changed the i love NY fridge magnet - what does the KY mean though? Short for kitty, or KY jelly? :surprised

Fantastic stuff - glad to see the updates are rolling again

05-10-2005, 07:52 AM
I love that style. that's loking very good. :)

05-10-2005, 08:19 AM
You monster... being able to paint so well... *grrrrr* :D

05-10-2005, 02:32 PM
The rendering on this is so damn good... hmm... what is this strange feeling I'm experiencing?... could it be ENVY?!! :P

05-10-2005, 02:56 PM

05-10-2005, 09:18 PM

05-10-2005, 09:44 PM
wow I like it . the lighting is very cool !

05-11-2005, 12:30 AM
iīm curious about the new expression you are planning for kitty :D what a bad life she has! hehe.. one idea that just popped up in my head: you could make her cheeks more "blushy" (<-- donīt know the right word) like  you know? that could make an interesting effect :)

so maybe she is fed up with the situation but thatīs only her "mental/rational" part.. poor kitty :D

but hurry up! this is looking sooo good it has to find a place in the challenge book! :bounce:

05-11-2005, 02:12 AM
hey Aly... love your aly-cat so much kitty is so sexy and so cute! Benita made a good point. could imagine her being sorry to have made that mess... uhm uhm. just keep on going! go aly go!

05-11-2005, 02:29 AM
Glad you changed the i love NY fridge magnet - what does the KY mean though? Short for kitty, or KY jelly? :surprised

you ve done beautifull job my friend, love the background and the main caracter also...and a very nice concept coming from true life...good luck

05-11-2005, 10:26 AM
this is by far one of my favorites. the amount of detail put into this pic. is monumental. Very beautiful. Im starting to feel sorry for her. at first I just wanted to know her name, what she drinks..you know, that kinda stuff. well this is simply fantastic. i love it!!

05-11-2005, 11:07 AM
Hi Aly

I love your way of painting.:) Nice catch on the detail. It looks great...I wish you good luck in the final stage of this challange!

05-12-2005, 08:20 AM
Great piece comin' here !
I really like the way you darken the pict, it add more variation in the lighting. Clean render.
Another award winning piece, I'm sure !

05-12-2005, 08:25 AM
Loved the rendering of the kitchen you posted the other day, was just waiting to see one of the lovely ladies before I made a comment! I love the styling on this piece, it's one of my favourites! Must see the final image!

05-12-2005, 12:15 PM
looks really awesome! But I still don't like the yellow gloves...the color doesn't fit with
the rest of the image imo...

Can't wait to see this one finished! Hurry uuuuuuup :scream:
:applause: :applause: :applause:

05-12-2005, 05:01 PM
Aly, this is quite the work, I love it! One of my favs for sure. I'm sure you'll be a finalist. You've my vote. Good luck! :applause: :applause:

My M&S:

05-12-2005, 05:54 PM
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/8/5790/5790_1115920471_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/8/5790/5790_1115920471_large.jpg)

A close up of Kittys face. I'm still working on the hair at the moment. The contrast has been upped a bit here... I'm not decided on the final ambience of the kitchen yet either. Thanks for the crits and encouragement. I can't work on it this weekend, so it's going to be close to the line for me! Better get on with it then... :)

05-12-2005, 06:02 PM
I like seeing the hint of her bra, a nice touch of detail.

05-12-2005, 06:03 PM
She's pretty, love those lips...mmmm. the attention to detail as amazing.. but I'm sure you've heard that before. A few stray hairs always help for realism... great work

05-12-2005, 06:07 PM
This is a very nice picture. The detail incredible, a level a mastery that I wish I had.

05-12-2005, 06:14 PM
wow, beautiful face:D and i guess the left side of the lips need small adjustments. i'm waiting for more.

05-12-2005, 06:17 PM

her eyes are sooo beautyful... and the lips and the look... :applause:

05-12-2005, 06:24 PM
Hey Aly, nice close up! Hey do you use models to work from? If so, can i get her #?

05-12-2005, 06:26 PM
Worming tablets? ewww! What are you thinking??? With cream, too???!!

Looking bloody ace - looks better with more blusher on her chops. I kinda prefered the lighter hair though - it was a good contrast to have kitty with white/blond hair - it makes her look more erm... innocent!

Keep at it - i really really hope you can finish this one in time!

05-12-2005, 07:26 PM

05-12-2005, 07:30 PM
darken the edges of her eyes, they r poppin out a bit otherwise. awesome:thumbsup:

05-12-2005, 08:59 PM
don't really have much to add, just waiting for you to finish it :D

05-12-2005, 09:02 PM

Beautiful painting, love the lighting. Can't wait to see the final.

My challenge

05-13-2005, 06:59 AM
I'm loving the detail and the stick-it-note is GRAND. I guess you're still working on the hair; I would make the bangs a bit (just a bit, nothing too notorious) darker on her left side (our right). Can't wait to see this one finished! I love this mood.

05-13-2005, 09:35 AM
oy, overdose urself with coffeine and finish this allready:D

05-13-2005, 04:04 PM

05-13-2005, 07:25 PM
Aly, this is flawless. Watching your progress has been a real learning experience for me. The background really knocked me over - the detailing on it is excellent... down to the calendar and the little magnets on the fridge: awesome.

I love the kitty's eyes, I love her ears and I adore the expression on her face. Her mistress so kick-arse it's not even funny :D Good luck, I think it's your best painting ever!

05-13-2005, 07:40 PM
Hi Poshspice, Thank you for the details, the face is really super, go, go for the end.

05-13-2005, 08:44 PM

Looks great! I look forward to seeing the finished image soon! :)

05-14-2005, 10:34 PM

05-15-2005, 09:36 AM
This is looking great mate. Love kitty's expression. The detail on the background is awesome.

05-15-2005, 09:39 AM
hahaha, very sexy! i like what i see very much. its a shame that the backrgound you work so hard on will be substantially covered up. its a shame i say.

05-15-2005, 10:15 AM
One more of mine favorites. This pic is everything about the theme and so very well executed that Im cheering for it! and yea.. sorry that I dont give a constructive critic or any usefull suggestion, but its in higher level that I am, so just one more loud applause for u :)

GO ALY! GO ALY! GO ALY!... Im your fan... love your work, pls finish it:sad: ...:bounce: :bounce:

05-16-2005, 11:01 PM
Can you believe it! I had to go away this weekend, so I've not been able to update the piccy! Aaargh! Luckily I've got all of Tuesday to finish this off, so I'll be updating quite a bit tomorrow. Then it's a quick run around to Jonny Duddlebugs to get ftp access! Jonny... are you there? Fingers crossed!!

Thanks for the responses folks since my last update... and Enayla; Linda! I don't know how any of this mess can be a learning experience for you! :) But thankyou so much!! It has been quite one for me too. The main think I've learnt is don't put in too many details... Belhaven - you're right! I'm cutting a few things out because it's looking too busy at the moment. It seems like the spider plant might be getting a spot of weedkiller at the moment...

05-17-2005, 10:17 AM
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/8/5790/5790_1116325033_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/8/5790/5790_1116325033_large.jpg)

I've come back to working on mistress, and will post a complete view later. I'm still not happy with her face yet, so might make a few changes to the expression... she just looks a bit impassive and needs some more energy! From this I think you can see why I'm thinking of getting rid of the spider plant... I'm still trying to keep it quite cartoony.

Thanks for the comments! I'll take a bit of time out from pixel pushing later and try and respond! Good luck to everyone... :)

05-17-2005, 10:32 AM
Looking very ,very COOL mate. Can't wait for the full update. Best of luck for the final.
T. :applause:

05-17-2005, 10:32 AM
It looks great Aly. Every level of detail in your entry is awesome. Great job on colors and
composition. The emanation of the character is so strong and powerful. No doubt who is the
master. The enviroment is great and the whole loking of the picture is really strong and funny
at the same time. Nice idea with wonderful realization.

All the best at the final stage of the challange. Good luck!

05-17-2005, 10:34 AM
Lovely stuff, Posh.

Going to be great!

05-17-2005, 10:41 AM
This illustration is great, love the expression of the characters and the way you have done the slave lips, the kitchen ambience is very interesting too. Good luck !

Franck Kobolt.

05-17-2005, 10:52 AM
goddamn i wish i spent more time in this thread, looks excellent,u'll definatly finish!!

05-17-2005, 10:58 AM
Glad youre still at it - I really hope you can make the deadline!

Excellent stuff. The details are coming on very nicely now. I dunno if its intentional, but i especially like the way the eye is drawn to the pixie liquid bottle, which is also tantalisingly close to her thigh and arse area....

My only suggestions right now would be to make her skin look less grey. Maybe redden it up a little. Or perhaps try and put a little bounce lighting on her face to make her a bit more evil! Try and paint a little translucent redness around the sihlouette - its not really giving me an impression of bright natural light at the mo.

Sorry to be so picky, but im trying to be helpful to yer! If you submitted it right now, it would still be frickin ace, so hurry!

05-17-2005, 11:04 AM
I agree with Andy about her skin- also, I think you should try upping the contrast a little. Also, make the highlights sharper on the rubber .
I've had a lot of fun watching you develop and you've certainly improved since you began-- congrats!
Just a few minor wiggles and you're there.....keep going...

05-17-2005, 02:37 PM
what more to say than... ROAR! :D

05-17-2005, 02:45 PM
Phew... I feel like there's someone with a stopwatch standing at my shoulder... which there kind of is I guess. :)

I've really gone off this face on the Mistress, and have decided to completely re-do it this afternoon! I post up the WIP in a bit. Talk about making life harder for yourself...

Andy_H and Paperclip Spot on as usual!

Tariq / Paul / franck kobolt / Calisto / Velinov / NOOB Thanks guys!

05-17-2005, 02:58 PM

ur detail is great.
can't wait for final piece.

cheers.:bounce: :buttrock:

05-17-2005, 04:02 PM
Damn, Aly, making changes this late on in the challenge?
Now, I don't want you to panic...
...ok, PANIC!!! :scream:

Your entry is fabulous, and though I've mostly been quiet, I've been following this along since the beginning! Best of luck, and please do finish so we can vote, ok?

05-17-2005, 04:06 PM
Ah, good, I was beginning to worry having not seen any new update from you all weekend. Glad to see you're still going to make it... Um, you ARE, aren't you!
I like the text on the clock face. Incredibly appropriate, too. :)
Good luck with the last bits!

05-17-2005, 06:57 PM
One of my favorites. I already liked your previous pictures (I'm secretly in love with Lady Frances Drake), but this one is astonishing. I especially like the characters and the overall mood. And the lighting. And the background too. And the little details. And the way it's utterly funny (yet sick).
Did I mention I loved the characters?
Good luck finishing it!

05-17-2005, 07:08 PM
Brilliant, delicious, ubersexy! Am excited you went back to the elegant lady version of her! Keep on rocking mate, your Girls simply kick ass, go go go Aly!!!:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

A new face for Missy! Perhaps a bit too like Kitty, but a darker version. The expression is a bit more cynical, but perhaps not as much fun... More like my usual style really... does it work? still need to fiddle with the hair a bit...

Perhaps it'd be better to see it in context I suppose... I've been drinking too much coffee today... burble wibble...

05-17-2005, 08:04 PM
WOW! great work, works for me...lets see this finalized already!

05-17-2005, 08:05 PM
The new face is definitely less "comical"...could be good or bad, depending on where you want to go with it. Frankly, given the background, I think the comical face would suit better. This takes it into "dark" territory...in a suburban kitchen! :)

Fantastic work, BTW.

05-17-2005, 08:07 PM
oo yea keep this one !

05-17-2005, 08:08 PM
wow i like the new face. i think she is beggining to look better then Kitty hehe

05-17-2005, 08:11 PM
Supersexy! just a decent crit  face middle mainaxis seen from the eyes falls a bit stron back, starting from the nose wich makes her nosetip and mouth look slightly off axis. bout kitty syle: diggin it, looks ubercute! tweak her and she rox! lovin your gurlies! go aly GO!:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

05-17-2005, 08:19 PM
I love this face ,but i think the first one suited the painting better. Now both kitty and missy look serious. Before kitty was like " this s..it isn't funny anymore" and missy was " clean it up you little scamp."...... i think I need some sleep too.

05-17-2005, 08:20 PM
She's really cute, but to be honest, I kinda miss her smile.
In any case, love the hair before her left eye. And also love those mid-closed eyelids.

05-17-2005, 08:24 PM
i prefer the fist face, The atmosphere with becomes too much bad, I prefer the first one but the one as are the other one very realized well

05-17-2005, 08:24 PM
Cheers folks! :D Yeah you're right Sacha... right, 'ere we go...

05-17-2005, 09:22 PM
eh, the face has gone bland IMO, I like the mischievious sauciness of the first expression....

05-17-2005, 09:30 PM
nice up date again and again.
can't wait for final image.

05-17-2005, 09:44 PM
I agree with Tariq exactly
I like it a lot artistically, but as far as the overall piece goes, i prefer the old one - it showed that the whole thing is silly, innocent roleplay, a comedic piece, a bit of kinky fun in a mundane, everyday surrounding - you get the idea.
This new face makes it all seem a lot sexier, but also more serious and dark. It fits in with the style of your other pieces, but i thought it was a nice touch having a more light hearted approach to the M&S theme. To be honest, i liked the very first sketch you did where kitty and missy were smiling - twas all just a bit of cheeky fun!

Whichever one you decide on will look great! But make sure its the last 'rework' on your painting before the deadline!

Time be runnin oot!

Best o luck

05-18-2005, 12:27 AM
Hi Aly!
I like the first expression much better. Would keep the old one. It fits perfectly with the pose and she looks more dominant. The new face...hmm I feel like...."what is her motivation?" if you know what I mean...

Anyways this is coming up really great. Close to finishline! Keep it up!

05-18-2005, 12:30 AM
Loving this piece. I think the old expression worked better though.

05-18-2005, 12:37 AM
Blue Cougar, Andy_H and Tariq. I completely agree with you. I guess I'm not happy with the original face technically... though emotionally I am. I have since made further changes... and am trying to incorporate the best of both, hoping it doesn't end up as a 'curates egg', if you know what I mean. Apart from the lighting and overall colour balance, the pic is almost done, so I'll try to get some opinions on both together tomorrow, but even coffee isn't working now, and it's time to pick up my copy of Dr Seuss's Sleep Book and hit the hay! :) Night night...

05-18-2005, 01:50 AM
If we had a vote you'd get mine Aly, either face will work. I've loved watching the whole process.

You're the artist I wish I was!

05-18-2005, 07:04 AM
wow. your faces...are very....well, good work. I love it.

05-18-2005, 07:32 AM
Hi Aly, I've enjoyed watching this develop, but I've gotta say go with the original smiling face, this new one is as accomplished, but lacks the 'sauce' of the original. The new one moves the feel of the pic into a new area, but not a better one, perhaps simply a bit harder to read and understand quite what their relationship is. The original smile was a beauty, and the pic was made a lot more lighthearted because of it. Anyway, best of luck to you, it's a stunning pic whichever you stick with!

This'll be my last post before I put up the final colouring milestone ( and then 'final image' ...erk). I'm still undecided on which one to use. So here they are next to each other. A bit unfair, because the only version of the previous face I have at work isn't as complete as the new one, but you get the idea.

Speaky - I know what you mean. I've slightly changed the expression on the new one and corrected the facial dynamics pointed out by the1st_angel too.

05-18-2005, 08:22 AM
both good, but I honestly prefer the first :)

05-18-2005, 08:24 AM
Aly, i'd say go with the first (original) one. I understand the reasoning behind the rework, and you know better than anyone else what sort of dynamic, tone and mood you want to establish, but I prefer the playful overtones of the first one.

This has been one of my fave entries and I'm really looking forward to the final piece, good luck!!

05-18-2005, 08:29 AM
Aly, I agree with Speaky and the other ones: stick with the old version. It seems to have more character and punch. The new one seems to be too "cute" for the scenery and it lacks some kind of strong expression, dunno...

Cheers and good luck...
:) <- Lutz

05-18-2005, 08:43 AM
I also prefer the first one. Hope you finish this soon.

05-18-2005, 08:51 AM
May I be bold and make small suggestion? I think the eyebrows on the second face would look great on the first face. :) They're sexier and a little harsher in my opinion

05-18-2005, 09:00 AM
Left one! LEFT ONE!

Its loads clearer, seems to fit on the head better, has more 'oomph' and portrays a much more effective message than the one on the right.

Nice to hear youre gearing up for the final push - its gonna be hella ace when complete.

05-18-2005, 09:00 AM
both is excellent!it's hard to choice.
personally i prefer the 2nd.but i love the lip color of the 1st version.hehe..
keep going and best luck 2 u.
cheers. :buttrock: :bounce: :applause:

05-18-2005, 09:06 AM
the now one looks almost too realistic for your classical pinup style here, so i'd go cor the original one and hope you make a new sexy pice with the new girl! she's soooo sexy, but i'd choos the left girl, cuz style and expression are meant to be in this piece :)
keep it up Aly, keep on rocking!!!:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

05-18-2005, 09:14 AM
I personnaly prefer the second one. I find it more natural and snob at the same time. The 1st one has left strength. She seems more lost.

05-18-2005, 09:25 AM
I love the first and i love the second:scream: ..sorry..lol.Hard choice..hhuuummm...maybe just put first lips color to second ..like xric7 told you...so ..tic tac tic tac..quick quick!!

Very good job mademoiselle!!

05-18-2005, 12:06 PM
The second one's mouth looks much more natural than the first, but I would put on a little smile. The lips colour is a bit too weak, a darker tone would give it more expression. Good luck!

05-18-2005, 12:23 PM
the second one for sure!

05-18-2005, 12:28 PM
Hi Aly, I would go with the first one to contrast the other girl's expression.

05-18-2005, 12:42 PM
I agree with Erwin. I like the first one better, too. She just looks more beautiful to me.
Hurry up man, itīs your decision, not ours and you donīt have much time left!

peace, pete

05-18-2005, 01:12 PM
i find the second one more "masterly" :-)

05-18-2005, 01:32 PM
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/8/5790/5790_1116423122_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/8/5790/5790_1116423122_large.jpg)

Right, I'm putting this in as my final colouring! Even though strictly speaking it isn't. I STILL haven't decided on on a final head for Missy, but it's on a separate layer so can make an arbitrary decision later...!

I've still to alter Missy's leg, as the perspective is cockeyed, do reflections and shadows on the floor, and put light beams and shadows in; as I intend to have the characters striped from the blind on the window. Might work! :) So still lots of tweaks...

The spider plant has gone, and I think the composition works better for it.

I'm a bit confused about the end time for this. I thought it was 12 midnight GMT, but the timer on my submission page says over 22 hours yet and it's now half past 2, so I'm in a quandary, baffled and downright bamboozled....

Thank's for your help guys! :)

05-18-2005, 01:36 PM
Gorgeous.....great sense of humour.....I laughed out loud just there, it was the first time i noticed the 'I love KY'

Good luck

05-18-2005, 01:48 PM
Looks great, but you're cutting it close! I hope you have no prior engagements today :) I'm eager to see this finished up!

05-18-2005, 01:59 PM
It's looking GReAT Aly!!

Love all the details... one of my favourite pieces in the competition... you've gotta be well up there in the judging!! Good luck!!

I'm not gonna add to your confusion over Missy's head... it's your decision... ;)

05-18-2005, 02:30 PM
That head looks perfect in situ, Aly. That's the one! Loe the sneaky pot of Marmite, too!

05-18-2005, 02:43 PM
Looks perfect now.

Her new head has got the alluring tiltyness of the 2nd head, with the cheeky grin of the old one - its spot on! missy has a much more dominant look, but the smile stops her from appearing too dark and sinister.

The sunlight seems alot more intense and the whole thing looks much more contrasty, and i think the removal of the spider plant has helped give the composition some breathing space. I like the cheeky wee pot o' marmite peeking out the cupboard in a voyeuristic manner (what??)

Im really really having a hard time finding crits now!
If i have to say summat, its that i think the kitty bowl looks a little too luxurious and designed - maybe you could relate more to a bog standard reddish plastic one?
Also, the milk spill doesnt look quite right - its solid blobs of white at the mo - no washed out, thinned whites where it has spread. Spill some milk for reference - ahem....

Lookin frickin spiffing though - make sure you post a hella-big version when youre done - id love this as a wallpaper and to explore all the detail!

05-18-2005, 03:46 PM
Loving it Aly! Awaiting that calender! keep on rocking and see ya in 6 hours! go go go!!!

05-18-2005, 04:28 PM
looking damn good :bounce:

05-18-2005, 04:41 PM
excellent stuff..... just one last update bro and your done!...

Shadow stuff.... highlights... shiny bits and smiles!

Only a few tweaks till the final image now! If anyone has any last minute flashes of inspiration, I'd love to hear them! :)

Maybe Kitty's face is a bit grey... hmmm!

05-18-2005, 05:38 PM
I really like this one, it looks great, and it funny to. Can't wait to see the final version.

I took your picture into photohop and added more saturation to bring out the colors, and added more contrast to it, my only suggestion is to play with contrast/saturation in photoshop and see what you think.

I added a Hue/Saturation Layer, upped Saturation by 57
Added a Brightness/Contrast Layer, Upped Brightness by 47, and contrast by +42
Added another Hue/Saturation Layer Selected Yellow in the Edit drop down, and -38 on the Saturation.

It was a quick adjustment and it's not perfect, but that's my only critique would be to push the colors and contrast more.

05-18-2005, 05:41 PM
yay! final coloring and whole composition is here again! Simply love it! Another finalist ;) good luck!

05-18-2005, 05:44 PM
oh mamma, this is too good:D light effects, color scheme, overall impression - simply fantastic! i wish you all the best in the challenge, i mean it!

05-18-2005, 05:51 PM
Frickin ACE!

I wanna big-ass poster of that thing!

Congratulations on getting it done in time - how did you manage it? Surely you had work today....?

Ive never used this emoticon before, but i think you deserve them:

:applause::applause: :applause: !

05-18-2005, 05:55 PM

Go Aly Go! Go Aly Go! Go Aly Go!

I'm glad you got it done. I was a little worried, and it's my favorite piece. I still think you should have gone with the hat instead of the feathers, but I still love it.
Now what I'd really like is to see a larger image of the woman on the calendar on the cabinet :D
great work!

05-18-2005, 08:35 PM
Great Work, Aly!!! :applause:

Good luck on voting

05-18-2005, 08:53 PM
Phew... Just got home and looked at it on my monitor here and the values are a bit dark, so it's still 'final colouring' at the moment! Post a re-balanced one later... Gee, why can't all monitors be the same?

Tasty bits - you are completely correct! I'll follow your advice here... THANKYOU LOADS!

05-18-2005, 09:01 PM
great work, aly!looks wonderfull! good luck!:bounce: :bounce:

05-19-2005, 04:19 AM
gorgeous!!! go go go aly!!!:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

05-19-2005, 04:47 AM
I've been watching the development of this entry for a while and I must say that this is one of those that interests me.

I like what happened eventually to the master's head. The modified version perfectly suites her dominant character. If you want some very minor suggestion here they are:

I find the upper body (especially the shoulder) of the master a bit straight. Unfortunately there is no warping tool in photoshop to make the upper body curve a bit (also the hips). These were the things I was waiting if you'd make adjustments as it progresses. A bit of tilt and curve will make a difference (imo). However, these is on the artistic execution which is just secondary to the concept in terms of weight in evaluating an entry.

Overall--great work and style! I'm a fan of artworks that try to tell something that uses human figures.

Congratulations on this wonderful piece!

05-19-2005, 06:37 AM
i'm speechless~astounding piece ally!http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/bouncy.gif

05-19-2005, 06:47 AM

05-19-2005, 06:55 AM
Hey hey your picture reminded mine!
Great work it is really cool, nice atmosphere and lighting effect.
Well done!!
The details in this kitchen are well thinked!

05-19-2005, 07:17 AM
Hi Aly,
I just wanted to say it's great. I like the aye in the closet :)
Previous lighting was better, in my opinion, this is too dark for me now.
And... where is the final version?

05-19-2005, 07:59 AM
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/8/5790/5790_1116489575_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/8/5790/5790_1116489575_large.jpg)

I don't know what was going on with my work monitor last night! I decided to adjust the values at work before I went home and completely over darkened it. Thanks to some advice from Tasty Bits, I've re-adjusted it, and barring it looking completely screwed up after this update it's done and the next update is my final image! Talk about close to the line! Eeek!

05-19-2005, 08:08 AM
lol yeh,u got like 3 hrs,better hurry.it looks fantastic!!

05-19-2005, 08:13 AM
Aceness - i was gonna say it looked a bit too dark before, but i dared not to give you another crit - ive been so picky with this cos i wanted to say useful things!

Anyway - it looks bostin now! No crits whatsoever.
Gerrit submitted!

Just a wee question - how many layers have you used on this thing?

05-19-2005, 08:17 AM
man i bet u have a timer on ur computer counting down while u r tweaking lol good luck mate

 :bounce:

05-19-2005, 08:27 AM
Good work Lady! Wish you all the best in the challenge

Well I think this is it! I could go on tweaking till the end of time, and I think my problem was I still hadn't decided what time of day it was in the kitchen so I was adjusting values that were changed next time I looked at it! Der...

But now it feels like the end of 'Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade', with Indiana Jones reaching out for the holy grail, and Sean Connery quietly saying... "Let it go Indiana, let it go..." So now is time to let it go, with all its faults.

Thankyou everyone for stopping by, giving me encouragement and very valuable crits. You don't know how much I appreciate it! :)

Right... now it's time to ftp!

Edit:Ooops! A story:

"Mistress came home really early from ‘Scratchies’ nightclub, to find Kitty had been playing with her clockwork mouse in the kitchen when she should have been tidying the house! Bad Kitty! After she had been told she could only play with it outside too... tut tut! And to make matters worse, she'd spilt the milk... all over the kitchen floor! Stopping short of rubbing her nose in it, mistress commanded Kitty to clean it up... NOW! And properly mind, or it'll be six of the best and a night in the backyard with Crispin, her Alsatian, who doesn't like cats! Mistress is secretly pleased, though, because she needed the floor cleaning anyway.... But Kitty, although fed up with having to scrub in yellow marigolds (her least favourite colour) is secretly pleased as well, because she knows she'll do a really bad job... and to be honest, she kind of likes the look of the crop in mistress’s hand... The thing is though, Mistress knows this..."

05-19-2005, 09:06 AM
Congratulations, mate, on a fantastic biy of cheeky art.

Very well done.

Good luck

05-19-2005, 09:11 AM

Wow dude! :D

To be honest I initially thought the theme you'd chosen was a little uninspired. But you've handled it so well - Now it's definitely amongst my favs! Nice one!

Good luck in the finals...

05-19-2005, 12:26 PM
I canīt say that it came out very nicely as it was very nice from the beginning. Itīs just even better now  Your pic is definately the hottest, congrats. I wish you luck in the judging. Looking forward to cya in the next challenge :)

peace, pete

05-19-2005, 12:30 PM
I WAS wondering what kind of a story you were going to attach to this one :)

A lot of changes came to this one.. and all to develop into this fantastic result.
Congratulations on your entry Aly.. And even though you don't need too much of it; I wish you the BEST of luck!

It all looks just FANTASTIC!

05-19-2005, 12:42 PM
Detail and lighting are awesome! Really well done!

05-19-2005, 01:23 PM

Best of luck

05-19-2005, 02:03 PM
Hey posh! We made it man! its finaly over, but hey, there have been some amazing entries and alot of new stuff learned throughout the course of this challenge. One of the best pictures i've seen in the competition honestly, very good man! You deserve alot of respect! Good luck!

05-19-2005, 02:12 PM

05-19-2005, 02:14 PM
Well the die is cast now! I must admit to being not completeley happy with the final pic. I was a bit silly in changing details like the Mistress character at the last minute when I should have been concentrating on the overall image. And considering I'd spent time getting my drawing how I wanted it at the start, there's not much of an excuse for that. And the last thing I did was tweak Kittys eyes cause I thought she was looking too far back and now she looks cross eyed to me... Oh well! Excuses... excuses... no use crying over spilt milk I spose! Doh... I made a joke. Why I laugh?

Good luck to everyone who helped me with this, and were just fantastic! I won't pick out anyone in particular 'cause everyone's brilliant. Duddlebug told me it was like a big community during the challenge and he was right. My first! And doubtfully my last! I have genuinely learnt a great deal from this experience; one thing being don't call yourself a girls name unless it's Linda! ;) Hehe! Oooh missus...

Great Moses Aly, that's amazing! Your technical skills are definitely some of the best I've seen on this website, your understanding of everything you paint is unbelievable, for someone like me, starting out for real in digital, watching your processes has been really great. And your sense of humour just rocks. All those little humane details spread a grin on my face... my absolute favourite is the Pixie washing up liquid. Phenomenal work. Best of luck in judging, though I seriously doubt you'll need it.

Good luck,

05-21-2005, 12:12 PM
Heh Heh! Really well-executed although the setting looks out of place with that kind of characters. Wish you all the best!

05-21-2005, 01:21 PM
Heh heh! Thanks for the continued feedback guys and gals! I've kind of come back to this pic a bit this weekend and looked at it with fresh eyes, so I'm making a few changes to it just for myself, as I don't think we can correct sumbitted images anyway. I'm slightly upping the contrast in certain areas and altering Kittys face a bit. There's something about her eyes which changed a bit on the last day of tweaking; and it keeps bugging me. Her right, our left, seems misplaced somehow. So I'll eventually post it in the finished 2D section with the changes which a lot of people seem to be doing anyway. And I'll put up a link to a high res one if anybodys interested...

Oz Haver - Haha! But you're in Puerto Rico!

05-23-2005, 08:44 AM
AMazing! This turned out purrrfect! ( I apologise for the hideous pun..!!) Seriously though, this is a beautiful piece. Love the subtle humour, and the normality (is that a word?) of the setting. Definately some kind of prize.

05-24-2005, 04:48 AM
I LOVE the cat-girl character, sooo cute...

05-25-2005, 03:49 PM
Hey Aly, fantastic artwork as usual. A really nice concept  I hope you win :D

...but just out of interest, or maybe its me imagining things...I'm starting to think that 'Bad Kitty' is the same girl as 'Lady Frances Drake (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=194487&page=1&pp=15)', am I wrong?!?! So are you subconsciously painting self portraits, or is this a friend or a girlfriend?

Anywayz all the best with the comp, hurry up and get your website up!! I'd love to see some more of your work and maybe some tutorials in the future. :deal:

All the best, Cal.

05-26-2005, 11:34 PM
OMG! Linda has a rival. :) I really like this painting, excellent style. Good luck in the challenge!

Really think it over Aly, if not too vivid, she may be of someone you are close to.
I notice that especially when I am doing a randome set of heads for crowds in my comic books... it ends up that while trying to do sketches of heads to fill the crowd, I have my whole past sketched out!

BTW your image Lady Frances Drake (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=194487&page=1&pp=15) is outstanding!... As to be expected :)

Keep em up Aly!!
