Challenge Page (

Latest Update: Final Image: This is it... (

The final image:

"The guitarist of the band "Mammoth" experiences an incredible moment of joy and freedom as he feels the admiration of the audience."

(I only wish this could happen to me some day:))

03 March 2005, 07:31 AM
Yes! I am in! I have no idea what kind of concept I'll throw in, but, all kinds of thoughts have started to pop-up in my head and that doesn't really help focusing on my work (not related to CGI) at the moment!!! :scream:

I'll try to do my best, I've hopefully learned something from the previous challenge!

03 March 2005, 08:26 AM
hey dude, have fun and great to see u back for another contest!

03 March 2005, 10:19 AM (

Just brainstroming and sketching on... Sorry for the low-quality cam-phone image. Might be too \"constantineous\", hellish idea. Probably not so original...

03 March 2005, 11:22 AM
It' seem to be a huge scene! a lot of work , good luck , and learn together , have fun!!:scream:

03 March 2005, 02:51 AM
:Makes new concept sketch:
hahhaha goodjob man like it really well...i came up with the same idea but you got it first =) GL with you entry.

03 March 2005, 07:11 AM
This might too big piece for me to do in this timelimit, especially when I have a dayjob with long hours... Maybe I'll try to do something more simple, as this would require really many rigged humanoids etc.

03 March 2005, 10:46 PM
Hi Tuomas........Looks ambitious....I like that.I say you go for it........i;ll be watching your progress.....And I wish you all the best in your efforts......Until later good luck to you......:arteest:

03 March 2005, 11:20 PM
maybe you could make it in a way that it would also work with fewer
characters. That way if you know you ain't got the time you know
what characters to drop and how to change the angle and composition

03 March 2005, 06:07 PM
hopefully with your next image I can give you a true thought about this image... but for know keep up the work.. and good luck to you.

03 March 2005, 07:49 AM (

Sorry for the poor concept drawing, again... The idea is that there is guitar hero that is worshipped and adored by the fans. I am very tempted to model myself as the guitar hero, even though I am far away from that:)

This concept feels better, yet it isn't less ambitious. there is a lot of modelling to do...

03 March 2005, 05:54 PM (

Started off with the easy part, the guitar. It is going to be a Ibanez, next texturing it...

03 March 2005, 06:35 AM
I guess I'll do some head modelling later on today (once I get home from work). I will take some headshots of myself and try to create a realistic head, as I want to be the guitarist in this scene!

I have noticed, that this concept is not less tedious than the "hell" scene as there will be a lot of details (the audience, the stage, the guitar, the guitarist, lighting etc.). But a really good project to practice all the basic skills like modelling, texturing, lighting and rendering. I think I will try build a proper rig for the character too so that I can try different poses and perhaps animate it also later on. Hopefully I'll finish in time!

03 March 2005, 07:12 AM
good work so far, this image looks promising

i have a few critiques on the guitar model though, it look like you used the meshsmooth modifier and i would watch out because it may give you too much of a melted smooth effect that will make your model look unrealistic. . . to avoid this, try chamfering edgs that should be "hard" edges with small amounts and tha twill give you a harder edge in the resulting meshsmoothed mesh.

good luck with the rest of the competition:)

03 March 2005, 08:31 AM
Yes, thanks for the tip. I'll be creating a harder edge also for the bottom of the guitar. Also the mikes will be fixed a bit more.

03 March 2005, 08:34 AM
Nothing wrong with going a new direction Tuomas.....Go with your instincts.....

Why not put yourself in's your creation..that would be fun......:arteest:

03 March 2005, 08:42 AM
very interesting concept u got there... i like the guitar god idea... hope u can pull this off with blazing colors.... good luck bro, o btw, the guitar model rocks

03 March 2005, 12:14 PM
l like the guitar. besides ibanez is fine already. play it buddy

03 March 2005, 12:45 PM
:bounce: Cool ! You great concept design and amazing idea.

03 March 2005, 05:47 AM (

I started experimenting with the guitar textures. Some are UV-maps and some just procedurals. I know the body texture is still too dotty, will improve that more. But I will now move on to modeling the player etc. and tweak the guitar later on. I am working now long hours at my dayjob and don't have enough freetime, lets see if I can finish in time.

03 March 2005, 06:48 AM
looks good , nice concept you have... and that guitar looks really good to me...
keep going..

hyvältä näyttää...

03 March 2005, 09:11 AM
hey dude, nice start...... look forward to seeing updates. Keep it up

03 March 2005, 05:29 PM (

Still long way to go...

04 April 2005, 01:34 PM (

I am in a hurry now.. Here is a quick update on the head... Must... keep on... modeling...

04 April 2005, 04:19 PM (

Next to the body parts...

04 April 2005, 05:47 PM (

Just testing with the stage. There will more props n' stuff. Speakers etc.

04 April 2005, 05:48 PM (

First tests with the texturing of the head. Moving on to the body. I have now the chance to make myself look more athletic than I really am:)

04 April 2005, 10:34 AM
Hey man, very good concept!!! I am fond of some bands of Finland! Fast and pro modeling and texturing...Keep it up!!!

04 April 2005, 10:52 AM
Wow, hi jarvetu, this guys face has so much character already, well done:thumbsup:
Cool concept and guitar too, you're pulling this together really well, keep it coming!

04 April 2005, 11:09 AM
hey buddy!....i like how the face is modeled!:)....nice guitar too!

04 April 2005, 12:55 PM
hey great start to the texturing, I would increase the specular levels a bit to give the impression of sweat. Keep it going

04 April 2005, 03:07 PM (

The guitarist is starting to get ready, the textures still need some fixing. I'll be working next on stage and props. Oh, I need some audience too...

04 April 2005, 03:15 PM
He's pretty cool and has a lot of character. I reckon the hand is the only bit that's weak. They look a bit square on the fingertips and could do with being fattented up...

04 April 2005, 10:06 AM
Hi jarvetu... model looks very nice even with the textures that need to be fixed:)!...hmm from this angle i see that all fingers are the same lenght ... hmm maybe im wrong though..good work!:D

04 April 2005, 05:51 PM (

Testing with the guitarist pose. Yes, the hands are still too small and need some refining...

04 April 2005, 07:06 PM
hey mate, this has come along way since i last looked, nice work mate

04 April 2005, 05:51 PM (

I did some tweaks on the guitarist model, added a strap for the guitar, and many small things. I think there is still room for some improvement in the guy. Next working with the stage again.

04 April 2005, 08:44 AM
Looking good!

I'd suggest giving his left hand a more interesting pose though (it doesn't look like he knows how to play too well!). A standard bar chord shape would look really good.

04 April 2005, 09:07 AM
It might be that I need to to some radical changes with the concept as there might not be enough time. Lets see what I can achieve then make some changes to the plan. At least the audience needs to be somehow simplfied. Maybe they will be totally in the shadows, that might work. But lets see what happens:)

04 April 2005, 10:05 AM
Thanks Jowens for the tip, it is true, the chord could be a bit more complex. I'll pay some attention to that:)

04 April 2005, 02:54 PM (

Stage props, wires, amps, etc. I need to still add a lot of details and then start texturing the objects.

04 April 2005, 09:48 PM
Hey Tuomas,

Your scene is coming along great, the guitar and stage models are great:thumbsup: . Your character is looking pretty impressive too, the pose looks a little off but you did a great job here too.

04 April 2005, 08:13 AM
hi tuomas...the stage looks great even in its early stages:)!....keep detailing them mate:D!

04 April 2005, 09:05 AM
great modeling man

its all so realistic...

do u touch things up in photoshop when ur done with the render... if so have a look at my WIP below and tell me what u think i can do

04 April 2005, 09:31 AM
Thanks Tom! Yes, I did a little retouch for the guitarist (WIP though) in Photoshop but the stage is still untextured and just a draft. Any ideas, for what to add as an detail. I was thinking of beer bottles, etc. Maybe some stuff that the audience has thrown to the stage. Underwear perhaps? :)

04 April 2005, 05:05 PM (

I thought I'd do some texturing for the stage scene for a while. I am still evaluating what details to add more. I guess I should start building up the audience soon too...

04 April 2005, 05:07 PM
I also added some picks to the floor, more wires, and if you pay attention you'll notice that there is a small toy bear on the corner of the amp:) I think it's better than having a beer bottle there:)

04 April 2005, 07:21 PM
Ave Jarvetu,
Well done texturing on the scene man, texturing with feeling...:buttrock::buttrock::buttrock:Especially for the floor, it is well done. But does the color of cables have to remain gray?

04 April 2005, 05:50 PM (

This stage thing is really difficult to make look like a realistic case. I guess the lighting is the important part. Also the audience and guitarist will change the feel of it.

04 April 2005, 05:24 PM (

Trying to create simple groupie model. This one was derived from the guitarist model. I'll try to simplify it a bit and then duplicate different versions of it.

05 May 2005, 04:42 PM (

Testing new perspective. I guess this viewpoint looks even better, I dont need to create so many people as the audience. More texturing to do...

05 May 2005, 04:59 PM
your lighting is awesome! when i see your post in entry page , I think it's photograph! good job!

05 May 2005, 06:14 AM (

Here is a bit of information about what will be changed and how.

05 May 2005, 06:26 AM
Yeah, lights and composition are cool

05 May 2005, 05:20 PM (

Just testing with the lights. I'll still add a bit more audience too.

05 May 2005, 11:00 AM
Here you are!?
I missed your thread the whole time  sorry 4 that.

And now 4 the compliments...

Fantastic lighting, great character(s), and a real nice conzept.
 Respect!

Good luck in the Voting (you got mine)
See ya, Alex

05 May 2005, 04:03 PM (

I am not totally happy with the results, but next into post-processing.

05 May 2005, 04:45 PM (

closeup on the amp. Not exactly the quality level I wanted to achieve but this has to do this time:) I've done only tweaking of the colours in Photoshop and added some noise.

05 May 2005, 04:53 PM (

The final image:

"The guitarist of the band "Mammoth" experiences an incredible moment of joy and freedom as he feels the admiration of the audience."

(I only wish this could happen to me some day:))

05 May 2005, 07:25 AM
You can see a little bit bigger picture in this URL:

Thanks to all who commented and also to all others who have contributed to this challenge. I only wish, once again, that there would be another challenge soon and that I'd have more time to do them!

05 May 2005, 11:24 AM
BTW, couple of the audience "heads" are just 2d, so I faked it a little on the post:)
