Latest Update: Final Image: Wish List (

ok, I think this is my final..not sure what else to add or fix

the background trees I\'ve made very faint, I wanted the bottle area clean and not confusing and busy..
I\'ve added some foreground vines on top with a slight blur..

03 March 2005, 07:22 AM

got an idea! hope I can get around to sketching and scanning it in before someone else thinks of the same thing ;p

03 March 2005, 01:24 PM
Hey Martin,
Good to see you entered again . I was thinking the same thing that someone would have the same idea as I would so , quick sketch that sketch :)

03 March 2005, 05:54 PM (

Wish list:

As children we're naturally very innocent, naive, mischievous and adventurous. My concept is based on that as kids we used to believe in fairies and in capturing a fairy, we are granted a wish.

The master/servant relationship in this piece is that the child gains wishes by capturing and enslaving fairies. Is there consequences? The servant role by the fairy - to fullfill its duty to gain freedom.

that's my concept in short ;p

03 March 2005, 06:01 PM
wow! u are so fast! and interesting,
glad to see u again! good luck

03 March 2005, 06:17 PM
Yap, this will be a good work:) you're good in such stuff as I recall your space opera. So keep it up! Waiting for some 3d

03 March 2005, 07:27 PM
Nice start on a tranquil take on the theme - goody. Good luck now, Martin.

03 March 2005, 08:25 PM
Very interesting:)

I can imagine where one light source is gonna be.

Good luck.

03 March 2005, 08:38 PM
Very interesting:)

I can imagine where one light source is gonna be.

Good luck.

u read my mind.. yep, it's a night scene...

03 March 2005, 08:43 PM
Hi Martin........It's go time for you once again.........Great to see,I anticipate some very nice art from you as always, and wish the best in your work here.........

Very nice concept.......peacful,and delicate.........Has emotional potential to the skies......happy to see you back for more,it should be that way..........See you as you progress.......:arteest:

03 March 2005, 09:41 PM
Nice concpet; maybe you could aslo make a glowing light from the jars in her back pack to show she captured many faries. Hope to see more sketchs soon, and modeling.

03 March 2005, 06:44 AM
thx guys

I think I'll only light the 3 jars, the one in her hand, and the 2 on the ground.. the rest are empty in her bag..

I'm still trying to get more concepts and ideas, but so far I like the potential with this and a night scene would be a challenge too..

03 March 2005, 06:49 AM
When I look to the concept picture, the child looks amazed. Like she never saw one before.
If she actually never saw a fairy before, you can add more emotions to her face.

03 March 2005, 06:56 AM
I think your idea is a very good choice... We have to see here a lot of monster and warrior... and you come with your poetic vision... that's beautiful... I can wait here to see a good picture, a rest for my eyes...

Keep it up Martin :bounce: gooooooooooo...

03 March 2005, 08:27 AM
Really a cool and interesting start... good luck Martin !

03 March 2005, 09:37 AM

03 March 2005, 02:27 AM
hey Versiden, very nice and effectiv concept man... i think u can really do alot with the lighting in this piece... keep the updates comming... i like where ur going...

03 March 2005, 09:20 AM (

started with head modelling as time is running out..

don't have any references in child faces, I think it's looking quite close to my goals atm.

comments welcome, enjoy the Easter holidays

03 March 2005, 12:29 PM
like it.... love the model so far.. keep up the good work

03 March 2005, 01:31 PM
Modeling with your style, always good quality... only one point don't agree me a lot (but maybe it was a real choice...)... the middle low part of the ears appear a bit long, do you see what I mean ?

03 March 2005, 01:33 PM

Nice to see you here again man :)
Good luck to you!

03 March 2005, 02:31 PM
UUUH!very nice!very very nice!
the idea is simple and cool!

03 March 2005, 05:08 PM
Lemog, hmm.. you may be right. I'm using my own ears as a reference, so I guess it's not suitable for a childs ear. I'll tweak it a bit more.

eddieellis, Antropus and -OZ-, thanks alot for feedback, glad u like the idea, and I hope the result will look as good as I imagine it in my head.. haha

on a side note, just got back home from a private zoo and I got to play with lion cubs and a bengal tiger, all of them about 3 months old. OMW, awesome experience, one lion cub chewed a hole through my tshirt - naughty thing ;p

03 March 2005, 05:11 PM
The head looks very much like a child, you got the proportions right, however I agree there is something not quite right about the ear, it looks a bit flat and the center of the lobe is a bit long. I think it looks great and I love your style. Keep up the great work!

03 March 2005, 09:44 PM
great start, u do very much have ur own style, keep it, as we all know time is the emeny

03 March 2005, 11:36 PM
cute idea man :) good luck!

03 March 2005, 03:41 AM
Great start, just came to subscribe and wish you good luck. Sweet concept you have and a nice start on her head. keep it up.

03 March 2005, 08:37 AM
nice to c ur first modeling WIPs comming up Versiden... and i also like ur modeling. Btw ur girl's ear needs more work, and the nost is too sharp in the middle. Those r just some enchi-binchi things wannet to point u out. Keep working man, ur doing great.... i'll b waitng to see more from u soon

03 March 2005, 11:04 AM (

fixed the ear.. thanks for the crits, otherwise I would've been lazy and not noticed ;p

I think it looks more natural now

03 March 2005, 11:07 AM (

started on the body mesh.. will try to finish the feet and arms soon, and then on to Clothes

03 March 2005, 12:29 PM
Beautiful idea man, I'll be expecting a really elegant piece from you soon!

03 March 2005, 02:57 PM
nice and fast model! martin , It 's fun to see that all of us change from spaceship modeling to charactor modeling! it's really fun! good luck

03 March 2005, 03:05 PM
heheh nice going mate... ;)

03 March 2005, 09:08 PM (

completed the feet, I know it's not really touching the ground ... not worried about that..

I'm going to do a quick bone rig to pose into a sitting/couching position..

03 March 2005, 09:10 PM
getting deep into it quick I see Martin.......hey the feet are'nt hitting the ground...............................Just kidding ;)

I think they could be a touch larger from this angle at least......I am expecting to see another quality entry from you, little less time now for us,we better get cracking.......:wip:

03 March 2005, 09:17 PM
she's levitating... mojo dude.. mojo ;p

I see a few problems with it as I posted.. mostly the heel looks wonky.. I'll fix tomorrow ;p

03 March 2005, 11:16 PM
Hey Martin,

You're quite fast too, hah, almost finished. This challenge is really a run for time. 52 days. not too much. You have a heavy modelin topic. Catch the age of a youngster in the model is always heavy, as i see you will be done with that. Keep it up buddy!

03 March 2005, 11:28 PM

Nice model although i do have one crit.
Her thighs from just the leg view..look a little wide to be a little girls...its still very ncie though bro...gj

03 March 2005, 11:34 PM
hi Martin....the model is coming out nice:thumbsup:... except for a little problem in the foot...seems a little flat and pointy toward the heel ... but nice anyway:)

03 March 2005, 11:46 PM
Yeh have to agree... feet look alittle flat... but nice so far

03 March 2005, 11:58 PM
Feet are literally my achilles heel, I prefer to model boots, shoes, sandals, socks whatever....but feet unt uh.

Nice start though, looking forward to see how it comes out :)

03 March 2005, 03:35 PM (

the rig didn't go too well and got terrible deformations, next time I'll just model it in pose to save me headaches.. ;(

so what I did was remodel the hip and leg. The knee I've reworked for a bended shape.

I'ved moved the shoulders forward since that's teh direction where the arms are going. (right now a bit irritated with skinning, so I'll just model it as I want it)

03 March 2005, 08:06 PM
Nice work on the model. I would comment on the feet, but I'm sure you alreayd know whats wrong, and everone else before me pretty much nailed it. One suggestion: maybe you can soften up the manible/ramus, it makes her look older with the sharp/defined edges.

03 March 2005, 09:23 PM
Rigging headaches....we all get them I believe.....I think rigging proper is stil the best bet martin.......To pose is sweet and simple....but a full rigged character done right now can be used later in anything you do........Your working nice and quite fast.....keep it coming along smoothly........:arteest:

03 March 2005, 10:16 PM
lol virtuiosa, i love the way you type haha.

Versiden- no crits hahaha good posing teh expression is coming out

03 March 2005, 02:18 AM
Hey Martin,
Nice modeling of the girl, the first thing that I noticed was the heel of the foot isn't quite right in my opinion. I think the back of the heel should move closer to the back part of the ankle. Anyways , nice start to the modeling.

03 March 2005, 11:43 AM
Keep up good work, I like your idea, it gives a gentle feeling of something very sensetive and romantic...

About the girl.. I think her head is a bit too big... but that's just my opinion...

Good luck, I am looking forward to see your progress...

03 March 2005, 07:26 PM
thanks for the feedback..

ace4016, what are the manible/ramus? the knees?

Virtuoso, thx dude.. ye, fully rigged would be pleasure, they should make a "make rig" button.

Troof, mmoir, Crying Horn.. thx for the crits, I'll go back to fixing feet later, I have fixed it Alot from the previous post tho. As for the head, kids do have freakishly large heads! lol

updates to come

03 March 2005, 07:58 PM
Wb Martin. I hope to see some fantastic stuff from you! I'll be back.. :)

03 March 2005, 09:59 PM
ace4016, what are the manible/ramus? the knees?

The lower jaw, I should have just said that from before:p .

03 March 2005, 10:06 PM (

got around to the clothes.. yay..

still haven't done the arms, still figuring out the workflow for it ;p
the heels are still unfixed at this point .. back to work, l8r

03 March 2005, 10:10 PM

Virtuoso, thx dude.. ye, fully rigged would be pleasure, they should make a "make rig" button.

Oh magic......let me know when you get one....;)

Like the cloth got some real nice cloth skills.I lke the folds and the flow already.......

03 March 2005, 10:44 PM
Hey Martin,
The clothes look very convincing, very well done.:thumbsup:

03 March 2005, 07:03 AM
Virtuoso, mmoir -thx guys... more to come ;pp

03 March 2005, 07:45 AM
You model is very pleasant to see... just one remark, the end of the heel seems too pull backwards... always a very poetic and gracious modeling.

03 March 2005, 11:59 AM
hiya.. yup.. the heel is an outstanding issue, every1 keeps commenting on it.. lol
one day it will be fixed ;p

03 March 2005, 04:28 PM
I expect great things from you... I see you are again keeping this deep. GJ!

03 March 2005, 04:58 PM
Well done so far!

Clothes looking good, and the ear looks great, nice muscles on the legs.

Good idea, good luck!

03 March 2005, 07:18 PM
Nice clothWork! And yes the heels, but nothing else. The pose is really a goal! :buttrock:

03 March 2005, 02:16 AM
is looking nice...i agree with a couple of comments up there: " heels" author : master Lemog

and - "rig button" by Michael..everyone needs that one i

your work has deep meaning in it...u always find the sensitive way to showcase it...i really like it

03 March 2005, 04:24 AM
Really nice gentle concept you have there dude! Expecting great works from you again! No more abt the heels, but maybe some more creases on the skirt to suggests the pull up to the knee area i guess? But really nice modelling and i really like the extra details on the side of the shin/knee area suggesting the muscles.
I'm not sure, but isit abit too muscular for a young girl? Could be fine though. Need the experts eye for that. But still, extremely great work from you again man! YOu :buttrock:

03 March 2005, 08:24 AM
Looks very good already

I fail to remember the intended age for this girl, but I'm pretty sure that in terms of child proportions, the shape/size of the cranium in relation to the ears is rather off, and that she would look a lot more pleasing if that gets fixed.

Clothes and pose looks great so far (and it seems you already know about the heel :D )

03 March 2005, 09:11 AM
um.. I'm aiming for about 8-11 I think.. I don't have any references, so I'm just winging it ;p

I think the hair will help alot, when I get that done hopefully this week

03 March 2005, 07:34 AM
good luck to you, i like your conceptual idea... really nice, the model looks really good .
cant wait to see the bug in the jar....

03 March 2005, 04:16 PM
Looking great!!

Nice job, keep on modeling

I stay tuned ;)
See ya

03 March 2005, 10:19 PM (

modelled the jar for the scene, and did a quick test render

03 March 2005, 10:23 PM (

modelled and rigged the arms, and using the jar as a test - what do u think of the jar size? I think the fairy is going to very tiny at this point..

the legs I rigged and brought the right leg closer to the body.
I've corrected the heel, I'll need to adjust the toes *note to self

comments welcome

03 March 2005, 10:31 PM
hey Martin.... the cloths are very the pose :) !... the jar is nice but i think it should be bigger.. maybe holding with both hands but without disrupting the view of the fairy inside!

03 March 2005, 10:36 PM
great! so innocent spirit... I would only move her head a bit forward. It seems moved unnaturaly back to me. Maybe a bit different pose..? with her head on her knees? I mead her chin? I think that it's quite popular pose among young girls:) and it could look nice... the jar should go further from face and bit down then... I'm just thinking loudly:)

03 March 2005, 10:36 PM
great work, love fairy things, good going, see you and

04 April 2005, 12:56 AM
The jar size might be made slightly larger for the fairy to be more visible however maintaining that a girl her size could hold it. Nice work.

04 April 2005, 02:11 AM
I think the glass should be a bit longer. Looks great so far.

04 April 2005, 02:19 AM
Hey Martin,
The heel looks very good now:thumbsup:, I think the jar could be a little bigger. Also the hand holding the jar, the pinky finger should be under the bottom of the jar to help hold up the jar. Great job so far.

04 April 2005, 06:17 AM
I agree with Ace... glass appears indeed too thick... but I don't know if that will be visible in the final scene... little update man but always nice... we hope to see more very soon :buttrock:

04 April 2005, 09:50 AM
I have good news and bad news..

the bad news is that due to some recent circumstances, I have to pull out of the competition, I don't think I will have any time to complete it. I will still finish it in the future as it's a potentially great portfolio piece

the good news, I HAVE BEEN HIRED BY BLIZZARD.. omfg!! The reason that I have no time for M&S is that I'm preparing for the move of my life! it's a Web programmer position, with opportunity to do 3d modelling, I'm freakin' out.. omg!

goodluck to all, and many thanks for the feedback and support!

04 April 2005, 09:55 AM
That's effectively great news... the most important are your job and your life Martin... then, I'm so happy for you... congratulations for your new employement

And maybe, you find spare time anyway to continue this project... see you soon guy :bounce:

04 April 2005, 10:43 AM
wow! My friend, respect! congratulations. I'm really happy:beer:

did you send them your portfolio with CV? or did they find you:)? I'm curious how you can get such a wonderful job... I'm studying and will start looking for some serious job in a 2 years:) maybe 1 year:)

04 April 2005, 10:48 AM
Both the speed and Quallity, RESPECT MAN!!

04 April 2005, 12:55 PM
Hey Martin,
That is great news indeed, hope things go well and see you later.

April fools!, sorry guys.. I couldn't resist. It's the one time of the year I become an A$$
I didn't think it would get anyone actually, apologies..

04 April 2005, 06:19 PM
Great model...the lighting setup looks real nice...very soft...small details like wrinkes on the sleeves adds that extra something to the pic

04 April 2005, 07:03 PM

:bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :buttrock:

04 April 2005, 07:07 PM (

I've made the jar larger, I agree it was a bit too small - hows the size now?

I made the pinky finger support the jar, great suggestion by mmoir

the head isn't rigged yet, I'll do that once I'm 100% sure about the model and then I'll unwrap it and move it closer foward.

toes have been adjusted a bit

04 April 2005, 07:12 PM
I like the lighting and the model, very cool man.
good luck.

04 April 2005, 08:59 PM
Updates looks good. The jar seems the right size now since the fairy is tiny (according to your concept sketch).

Nice April fools joke btw:thumbsup: .

04 April 2005, 09:04 PM
Nice adjustments martin......Looks more fine tuned again now.......I think the jar could be even a touch it even more emphasis and clarity in it's content......Smoothly coming along....well done....:arteest:

04 April 2005, 10:50 PM
You got me with your april fools prank, just call me Mr . gullable. Glad you liked my little suggestion .

04 April 2005, 10:51 PM
man i love ur idea.. just work better in the expression of the girl.. c ya !

04 April 2005, 10:58 PM
Watch the proportions on the girl, unless this is a style choice. Garment is working very early in the process. Good stuff.

04 April 2005, 09:46 AM (

stared on the backpack.. still shaping it and adding details.. more to come;p

04 April 2005, 08:07 PM (

I've added straps and more pockets.. I'll make the zippers a bit bigger..

comments welcome, cheerz

04 April 2005, 10:57 AM
Looking great!!!:applause::buttrock:

What have you in mind 4 the environment?... how about some Elbic-Forest ;)

I stay definitely tuned!! kepp on modeling

04 April 2005, 01:54 PM
What an april fool man!!! A great web site programmer at Blizzard but having no web site references in your signature...Nevertheless, I was hooked.
And for your project I think the background is the most challenging point, (with its textures especially) "the Forest!!!"...

Good luck joker!!!

04 April 2005, 02:03 PM
Awesome work, the backpack and dress are outstanding. No crits unfortunately, keep up the great work, im looking forward to more:bounce:

04 April 2005, 02:07 PM
thx vampeta, yes that's kinda what im going for, I think the texturing of the environment is going to be the hardest part. After the GSO challenge, i know how difficult its going to be ;(

J++ Dragon, hehe.. actually I so web design / flash dev as a career. So I thought that would be more believable. My portfolio is looking for new hosting, and I need to update it since it's kinda old, thx for visiting ;p

04 April 2005, 02:25 PM
conundrum, thx alot.. your models are cool too!

04 April 2005, 02:33 PM
Great work.
Nice idea and modeling.
Good luck.

04 April 2005, 02:34 PM
great backpack, realy nice and crisp in details, see you and

04 April 2005, 02:54 PM
Nice job on the backpack, the buckles and cords look great. At this rate you will be done in no time.

04 April 2005, 03:13 PM
Yo man! nice modeling... and concept too. Keep it up!

04 April 2005, 03:34 PM
Good Luck! :)

04 April 2005, 05:48 PM
Hi man. I like a lot your idea. I din´t see then before.

Very cool modeling. :applause:

04 April 2005, 12:19 AM
Awesome models. Very interesting concept, I like it.
Cloth is great.

Keep up good work!

04 April 2005, 12:28 AM
• I like the concept a lot, I can't wait to see more, that backpack look good, maybe some patchs of different materials would be nice when texturizing (leather, wool, etc), Very good Martin, keep it up!

04 April 2005, 02:29 AM
The back pack looks pretty good. Looks like texturing will be fun (joke).

04 April 2005, 07:50 AM - thx dude, glad u like the idea

alex.h, great to have your feedback, always appreciated

mmoir - ta, I used references over a collection of bags I have.. so the clips are looking as accurate as I could get it.. im quite happy

Dodgeas3d, Madlight_1988, JR.BRAZ thx guys.. I hate modelling tho.. argh

inbata, u too dude

Abishai_, im glad with the way the cloths has come out..

Climax, thx for stopping by.. i think it would be made of nylon.. will wait for texturing phase

ace4016 - hoping for a "instant unwrap" button for max 8

04 April 2005, 07:55 AM
Looking nice martin......Nice detail and well designed.I like the idea of bigger zippers.....perhaps a patch or crest of some meaning to the girl's backpack could be a nice addition to the girls personality......hers's to a automatic unwrap button in Max 8....;) :arteest:

04 April 2005, 08:02 AM
ace4016 - hoping for a "instant unwrap" button for max 8

Think we can complain to discreet for one? I'm all for it:bounce: , and the rigging button.

04 April 2005, 08:07 AM
Nice up-dates... this work comming really nice out
I continue to follow ! :wip:

04 April 2005, 09:13 AM
Aha! Cool backpack Martin! Also a good design! Just on the way you used to!

04 April 2005, 09:18 AM
Really nice modelling so far dude :) One thing to point out, maybe its just me, cause i always like to exaggerate proportions and stuffs hehe :P maybe the fingers could be abit fatteror puggier or (how do you describe it??) ? So that its more visible and has a more firmer hold on the jar?

Another thing is more extreme, but just liked to point out as a passing comment :) How about having a more close up view for your composition instead, expressing the emotion through the face more. You can even close up to the point where you can see the fairy's expression? So you won't waste a nice fairy model by zooming out too much. :) And a little bit of glow to add to the atmosphere of the image. :)

Sorry, i may have distracted too much from your idea, but just something i feel i have to let out, cause your work is really great man! :buttrock:

04 April 2005, 09:19 AM
oh yah, and a nice subtle little tilt of the head and a slightly more hunched posture maybe? :) Sorry, just hope it helps :) :buttrock:

04 April 2005, 10:12 AM
ye.. the gdamn unwrapping progress is just irratating... it should just work dammit! hehe
that and skinning.. argh.. ;p
but thx virtuoso and ace4016, i share the pain

jddog, Tremoside... glad u like it, it's small in the overall scene, but good to have details..

Ravendsg, I have a workaround to not waste the fairy details.. wait and see. thx for the suggestions.

the head posture will be corrected once it's rigged, right now it's just the way it's modelled and not yet final... so far I'm still not 100% happy with the head

04 April 2005, 10:38 AM
great model man.kewlidea i like it.. would love to see more.. i have no crits for you just happy comments.. good luck and great work so far man. Back pack looks great

04 April 2005, 05:59 PM
Hi Martin...thats a nice it:)! hows the fairys comin up?...yeah now the jar is ok ....great work!:wavey:

04 April 2005, 09:52 PM (

a hair test with shag:hair

I think the results are quite promising in the early stages, and with proper lighting and textures it could look cool.

But a few problems with Shag arises.
Shag isn't compatible with Mental Ray, only scanline seems to work for me at present.

so my options I've considered would be

a) render in 2 passes, 1 in scanline for the hair, and the rest of the scene in MR. But I cannot get the right lighting in scanline to match MR, that's kinda a problem. PLUS, the render times in scanline seem really high using the shag environemnt.

b)model the hair as geometry instead

or c) draw the hair in post in Photoshop

anyway this render is scanline, and the light looks very different from the MR setup, but the hair looks sweet ;p

04 April 2005, 09:55 PM (

guess im finished on the backpack, and I've added a hooded coat.

I've tweaked the head and made the jaw and nose a bit shorter..

04 April 2005, 10:00 PM
Hi martin.....Looks very nice..a nice flow......Shag works with Vray.......

I would go with choice "A'.........render in two passes.....The other choices will not get you anywhere near these results......Fine job,and stick with this my opinion......

04 April 2005, 10:46 PM
Why U not use shag hairs as geometry and render with mental ray? And in btw nice. Very nice.

04 April 2005, 11:03 PM
Hair update looks real nice Martin...hope you find the best solution for your mental ray prob...guess you could render out the hair as a tiff and get its alpha then use it in photoshop on a second layer....mix it in with the final compo..

04 April 2005, 11:08 PM
hi ~Versiden:)
interesting idea! looking good and nice! i'm looking forward your next update!
good luck mate.:bounce:

04 April 2005, 11:30 PM
This is going cool Martin....i understand your problem with Shag in MR is a bit frustrating though...i think that u should make a second scene when in final with lights in Max in the same angle and match the 2 layers later in Photoshop...i think this way u can save some time and work on something else instead of modeling hair too...:)

04 April 2005, 11:38 PM
Very nice Martin. I love the backpack. Well done. I'll be watching! :)

04 April 2005, 03:13 AM
Hi martin! nice update, I really like her hair!! more update please!

04 April 2005, 01:56 PM
cool Virtuoso, I'll download the free version and do some tests..

stefan, not sure about that.. won't converting it geometry be very memory intensive?

3dRaven, ye I thought about that.. I'd have to match the lights perfectly... oi ;(

goktug, thx man, I'll try to get those updates more regularly

DimitrisLiatsos, I hope it doens't come to that, I'll see if vray tests give me good results

||) |V| |^|, monsitj.. thx..always great to have ur support.. it's very motivating.

I'm going to continue on the modelling side.. and hopefully finish alot of it soon
thx for the suggestions every1

04 April 2005, 07:08 PM
Very nice concept. The model is looking awesome. I like her clothes, all those wrinkles on her skirt and top looks realistic, Nice work dude:thumbsup:

04 April 2005, 07:55 PM
beautiful example of the rule "less is more"Very unique style and concept...are you a graphic designer also?Just wondering since your concept and the colors have a beutiful flow:thumbsup:

04 April 2005, 08:49 PM
Wow Martin, your 3d skills are extremely clean, and your concept is very original and charming. I'm definitely hooked:thumbsup:
Keep it coming

04 April 2005, 09:28 PM
hi, you're modeling very fast ans very nice

keep it up!

04 April 2005, 06:02 AM
Hey Martin. A very simple concept but one which is familiar to us all. In fact, am wishing I could capture a fairy any day now to grant me the wish of better modeling skills............! It's looking great by the way. Good luck! :applause: Claireabella

04 April 2005, 03:17 PM
heya, thx for the support

madshooter, thanks.. the clothes turned out great.. I modelled the details on the shirt, the other clothing are simulated

S.DIMIS, I do web and flash dev stuff.. cg is just a hobby. Colors are temporary, but I'm glad u like the wip so far

DaddyMack.. thx dude.. more updates coming

el_newty, hehe, actually not that fast.. I only make really good progress over the weekend, during the week coming home after work, im just so tired to do cg stuff.. but I try.

Claireabella, thx for stopping by, in the end I hope to create something "magical"..

04 April 2005, 03:27 PM
Wonderful concept, beautiful modeling - what more is there to add? You're doing a great job - a pleasure to see:thumbsup:

04 April 2005, 08:43 PM (

my wip on the environment so far, still alot of things to tweak out. All the plants in the scene are just insane.. I hope it will render ok with all the textures on it and at high res... keeping thumbs crossed

comments always welcome

04 April 2005, 01:07 AM
very cool the escenary, i hope to see it with all the textures:bounce:

04 April 2005, 02:45 AM
Very nice modeling and very cool mood it gives to the scene. Great work

04 April 2005, 06:00 AM
Nice framing and good environment, I'm hope to discover that with fine textures... it will be very beautiful and poetic I think... good job

04 April 2005, 07:36 AM
Looks just like a place ehere you would find a fairy. Seems faritytalish, good job. Can't wait to see textures and such.

04 April 2005, 08:11 AM
Nice little setting for a picnic........martin.......Once textured and done up right with lighting and all, this will be a nice piece with a nice ambiant setting.....all you need for it now is a few ants running across that branch........:arteest:

04 April 2005, 08:25 AM
Very nice martin... It looks like a living environment for a fairytale creatures...

04 April 2005, 08:44 AM
melkao, arlutik, Lemog, ace4016, icedeyes.. thanks alot.. glad u like it, something fairytalish is what im going for.

Virtuoso - awesome suggestion dude.. I really like that one.

04 April 2005, 12:00 PM
Great detail as ever. My only crit would be that the girls heels look a bit pointed...

Cool forest, should look fantastic textured.

04 April 2005, 03:39 PM
Love the "fairytale" environment you're up to create. Feakin sweet n awesome! the girl turned out very cute, my only suggestion was her neck looks a slight bit too thick, and her face proportions look already a bit older than her body would let that expect.
moving mouth and nosetip slighly upwards should solve that, cuz a "tiny short nose" and round shaped cheeks are basically child properties. so far, fantastic work. keep it up Martin,
cheers:thumbsup:

04 April 2005, 02:29 PM
thx Swamps.. about the heel issue, I think it's fine as it is.. alot better than how it was before.

the1st_angel, ye I'm continually tweaking, thanks for the crit. I did move it up alot over the course of the wip. thanks for visiting

04 April 2005, 02:31 PM
hey m8! i love this lil forest modeling so far! i dont have any crits sorry.. keep it up! see ya!

04 April 2005, 08:47 PM
..... I'll be dropping by to catch me a fairy.......... :bounce: Claireabella

04 April 2005, 06:47 AM
Yes...this is a very fitting enviroment for your work Martin...and with some extra care with the background pic (to continueance with the 3d part of forest) this is going to be veeeery cool..... :bounce:

I liked this from the very early steps so i am waiting with great anticipation to see your results :) :wip: :)

04 April 2005, 06:54 AM
nice update! the forest if very nice, i especially like the foreground log with the mushrooms and all, looking great, keep it up!

04 April 2005, 12:04 PM (

I've tweaked the nose, mouth and skull shape quite a bit, I think a much better improvement

Still outstanding issues, like the elbow and neck, pls don't comment.. hehe

04 April 2005, 12:35 PM
That's looking a lot better now, Martin - now how about a subtle Mona Lisa smile on her face?

04 April 2005, 02:07 PM
Wow, wow!!! So realistic model and good pose!
Ok, I'll not comment head (only for now, as you asked:) - there is really some stuff remains to ajust... Good luck!

04 April 2005, 02:25 PM
Very subtle and delicate, i like it a lot. especially the little wrinkles in the shirt sleeve.

04 April 2005, 10:38 AM
rhin0, thx .. there's still alot to add, but I wanted to get started on the setting and mood.

Claireabella - thx for your support ;p

DimitrisLiatsos.. oi, hope I can finish it.. so much work ahead.

=BlackNull=, woot!.. some1 noticed my mushrooms.. hehe, thx dude!

JamesMK, thx dude, ye I think it's much better. I'll add expressions later with morphs.. I'm not sure if she should be smiling, .. or maybe a slight smile, not sure.. (?)

Deryk, I've fixed the neck and arm.. not sure if I should post it.. it's such a small update ;p Glad u like the rest tho

pixelkeg, thx im glad u like it.. ;p

right now working on the fairy... not much time left, I'm budgeting 1 more week on modelling. I should start texturing really soon!

04 April 2005, 10:47 AM
i love the idea, and it's modelled really well. It looks really nice, i love all the little details, i'm definitly gonna follow this:scream:

04 April 2005, 11:16 AM
.. oi, hope I can finish it.. so much work ahead....

...oi...i know u will man...and don't worry ...after all it's for fun....u got time...
Take care all the little details u want..i am sure u will finish this and it's going to look awesome ....not to mention that i like your concept very much

Now :wip: :wip:

04 April 2005, 11:59 AM
Its so REALISTIC and GREat! keep up the nice work!:D

good luck mate!

04 April 2005, 12:43 PM
Ok It really looks nice. But there is something that cant work. ...I think hé. The knees are too close to the chest. But the cloths are looking really good. And the hair is also realistic

04 April 2005, 03:32 PM
great work on the tweakings. no comment on ellbow and neck then ;) lol. Keep on going mate, loveley update!

04 April 2005, 03:40 PM
Your picture seems really good. What style of rendering are you looking for ??? Realism or something else. Anyway with a good lightning, I think it can be one of the most emotionnal picture.
Well done.

04 April 2005, 09:05 PM
d-tox, DimitrisLiatsos, Madlight_1988, great have your kind words.. very motivating.. ta

crapple, thx for stopping by. I think the pose could work, I can sit with my head on my knees. Maybe im just double jointed? hehe

the1st_angel, thx for suggestions earlier.. it really helped ;p glad u like the update.

authentic - thx ;pp. I'm going for as realistic as I can get it, lighting right now is just temporary tho.

04 April 2005, 09:17 PM
ok Maybe I'm just a stiff guy!good luck.

04 April 2005, 10:12 PM
Hey, cool to see a fellow South African artist in the challenge! I like your concept a lot and so far your WIP is coming along really nicely.

Looking forward to seeing how this one turns out :)

04 April 2005, 10:22 PM
I really like your modelling and the little subtleties in your piece :)

04 April 2005, 10:27 PM
many kindness in this model. this is very realist: clothes, bag.
can't wait to see next update.

04 April 2005, 10:36 PM
wow mann great progress !!!

i just think that her neck is soo big.. just my opnion.. waiting to see more dude.. c ya !

04 April 2005, 10:58 PM
I don't know if you've worked much on the lighting (it looks pretty dang good), but in your latest shot, there's a lot of shadow on the jars in her backpack... are they going to be glowing? (that may help show that she "collects" these fairies...)

04 April 2005, 11:04 PM
great. very lovely piece.

04 April 2005, 11:25 PM
Very nice! I love the little details, especially the bone structure around the knees!

04 April 2005, 12:57 AM
Excellent work Martin.. She is coming out very nicely. I am loving this so far.. keep it up my friend! :wip:

04 April 2005, 03:27 AM
Nice progress Martin, I have some crits but I've read your post so as i see you know what you have to do:-). So i wish lotsa time and happiness! Rock!

04 April 2005, 04:35 AM
Coming along the road nice and smooth martin........Like your hair solution and design, the backpak turned out real nice, and the pose for the girl is natural, not forced......real nice overall execution, looking very nice in all aspects.......Keep it coming martin...:arteest:

04 April 2005, 04:58 AM
Wow this is a nice piece, i didn't see this one untill now. I think it's great, elegent and just nice. It's good too see something different from the monsters. Great modeling too.

04 April 2005, 08:51 AM
Well I see your image evolves very well, good luck!

04 April 2005, 09:57 AM
Very nice progress martin... I like the pose and the details on the clothing more than anything...

04 April 2005, 10:08 AM
It is getting better and better everyday Martin ! She is really nice ! keep the good job !

04 April 2005, 11:40 AM
crapple, lol.. ;p

Leigh, heya, I'm really glad u stopped by, happy to hear u like the work so far. Now you're making me nervous.. ;o

gra7.. yup the neck is a bit big in the last post. I've corrected it though.. I'll post it tonight.

eunuchbot - not a bad idea.. though I want to focus on 1 main lit jar .. I think too many lit jars in the scene would make it confusing and could loose focus..

koko93s - thx alot, that's a funny story, I had some1 model for me while I sketched it onto paper then to 3d.

Tremoside - ye, every1 seems to crit the same things (elbows and neck).. though it's fixed now, I thought that it's rather a small update - but I'll post it later anyway.

Virtuoso, thx alot.. the hair is a bit of a headache .. but the results are promising so far. Thx again for suggesting vray into my workflow

icedeyes.. thx alot.. clothes are hard to get right.. I'm glad how the sleeves turned out

Smaw, DaVee, smaddl, ||) |V| |^|, hhssuu , Crying Horn, gpepper - sweet, thx guys... very motivating

04 April 2005, 08:28 PM (

started on the fairy model, the face is very much still not final..

04 April 2005, 08:30 PM (

04 April 2005, 08:39 PM (

.. the body torso.. I used the ground work I did for the Child (before the pose) to start on this body. I had this in mind before I started anything, just being efficient..

hmm, I can already see problems.. funny how I only notice this when I post

04 April 2005, 09:32 PM
Hey Martin,
I really like the look of your environment so far , it is going to look great with the textures . The finished model of the girl is very nice:thumbsup:  , looking forward to this all coming together.

04 April 2005, 10:00 PM
Looking good martin. One thing though, I would have imagined the fairy to be a lot thinner (face and body) and graceful looking, like you see in fairt tale books. Waiting for more updates.

04 April 2005, 06:43 AM
its a great model.. proportions are i tinsy bit out for my liking.

lower half: only comment is that touch of love handle... think she would be alot more appealing with out that like extra flesh.

top half: well as for extra flesh i think that excatly what this needs. titties to me say "ping" i think u want to be more on a "boom" i think the ribcage should be slightly bigger just to create that illusion of a slimmer waist... and possibly broader shoulders.

Sacha just posted an excelent femal body.. go have a look

good model tho

04 April 2005, 07:47 AM
hi martin...started on the fairy i see!...looks fine to me:)!...keep up the progress :)!

04 April 2005, 08:35 AM
thx guys, I keep in mind your thoughts on the waist. As for the breasts, I'm trying to avoid that typical cg chick with huge perfect breasts. I was even going to make them smaller, but I've settled on the size it is now.

I'll see how it looks with the overall body + hair, and the breast might even be a tad more reduced

.. more updates later.. ciao

oops, I seem to have forgotten the elbow update on the child model.. eh ;p

04 April 2005, 08:54 AM
These breasts looks fine to me and am absolutely agree with u about avoid cg breasts style.

Keep it up! Waitin for updates!

04 April 2005, 09:42 AM
Real nice clean start martin......This will compliment the rest of your scene very well.....

......For me I would like to see XXXagerated breast's.....You only live once....why not ;) .....If you give me a choice of looking at average breats or Knockouts.......I'll go for looking at the knock-outs.....I think you can still have a decent size and give the boyzzzz a show....and still keep things pretty much within reason and keep to within the parameters of your style and scene ideas......What would you want to see come down the beach.....a regular girl or a built one......;)

Ok......taste thing.....What you do have is a real nice and well executed entry.....And large or not....this will be a knockout entry.....;) :arteest:

04 April 2005, 09:48 AM
hmm,Very neat model u have here! great! really loved it! everthings looking ok to me!
Which program r u modelling these with?,
Keep it up mate!

04 April 2005, 10:29 AM
Nice updates Martin....I see you've found a solution for the hair ....Nice work on the new model looking very clean so far...

04 April 2005, 04:34 PM
Nice concept! and great modelling

04 April 2005, 04:46 PM

04 April 2005, 11:08 AM
thx for the crits, and all suggestions within reason.. hehe, I've never subscribed to fan-service, so your wishes for huge hooters are denied ;-)

Madlight_1988, im using 3ds max

04 April 2005, 11:11 AM
PS. Besides... how are fairies suppose to fly with unneccesary weight? haha.. side joke ;p

04 April 2005, 02:36 PM
Environment is really interesting ...and I like how the feary come out ... :applause:

04 April 2005, 03:34 PM
thx for the crits, and all suggestions within reason.. hehe, I've never subscribed to fan-service, so your wishes for huge hooters are denied ;-)

Madlight_1988, im using 3ds max

Actually, I find it quite refreshing to find someone making their girl this way.

04 April 2005, 08:19 PM (

first draft of the wings.. I'm still not sure how I'm going to attach it to the back or how the muscles will work..

04 April 2005, 08:21 PM (

from the rear angle you can see the wings are just "there"...

er... fairy anatomy 101.. ask google..

04 April 2005, 08:24 PM (

side view..

ok, now onto hair design..

I'm thinking of having the fairy naked instead of clothed.

comments welcome..

04 April 2005, 08:33 PM
Actually, I find it quite refreshing to find someone making their girl this way.
thanks alot Snows.. much appreciated.

04 April 2005, 09:50 PM
from the rear angle you can see the wings are just "there"...

er... fairy anatomy 101.. ask google..
Googled it and it seems you're quite correct :D She looks good too. Not sure if it's intentional (might have missed something mentioned about the concept) but maybe it would be an idea to make the fairy head different from the main girl's ... but then again, it could be a point to make them mirrors of her... Solid progress at any rate.

04 April 2005, 09:55 PM

nice modeling. Maybe some kind of transparent cloth could be an alternative ? and it would give here even more depth & mystery :)

04 April 2005, 10:48 AM
JamesMK, thx for the input, I think it's very different.. also I think the age is more adult.. I'll keep it in mind and maybe find another reference model/actress to look it

theuni, not a bad idea... I'll see how it developes..

04 April 2005, 12:44 PM
so pretty*...pretty fairy model. beautiful modelling:)

04 April 2005, 02:12 PM

Awesome stuff so far Martin. Doing excellently as I had expected.. Keep it up!

04 April 2005, 08:37 AM
how do u think fairies reproduce??

this looks like a very 'child bearing' fairy (hips) hehe

04 April 2005, 12:30 PM
Nice job, I think her hips should be more thiner.
I like her breast, it looks natural, most of all are doing them oversized...

Good luck!

04 April 2005, 12:31 PM
nice lookng farry man...i prefer u keep the farry's cloth with her... cause after all a kid is looking at i think ur goin a gr8 job... keep it up

04 April 2005, 11:52 PM
Hi Martin,Since my net connection is poore and slow, couldnt affort time to check for all posts so I dont know all the details behind the scene, considering the story etc.You said
you are thinking making the fairy naked.I allways see fairys with somekind transparent plasma kind'a silky clothes, but thats me.I wonder is the scene taking place in dalight conditions,,or in some romantic afternoon,,closing in evening,,or what,,did you consider the
starbug'zeffect,,like glowing fairys.

04 April 2005, 07:12 PM (

It's not been a very productive weekend, but here's my progress so far.

Getting the hair right has been quite tricky.. I just need to try and fix that hair clipping problem on the neck.. otherwise im happy with it.

comments welcome ;p

04 April 2005, 07:28 PM
Nice upd8 the ear modeling :thumbsup:Hair came out nice too. I'll wait to crit when you start on her textures....

04 April 2005, 08:29 AM
your fairy is very pretty so far. her hair is very nice, and the flowers set it off. it kind of has a zelda feel with the net and bottle.

04 April 2005, 08:36 AM
Great :) Good Luck

04 April 2005, 01:19 PM
Lemog, gpepper, jddog, jolyrojr2, Firestorms.. thx alot!

I still think the naked treatment would be really nice.. bearing in mind the fairy is really TINY and glowing, so im just after the silouhette

04 April 2005, 01:19 PM
lovely models, and that hair really added alot to the fairy.

04 April 2005, 01:23 PM

I like them both Marttin...great work , as always of course, humble opinion is that although the last one is more dream-like (l like it veery much) the first one is more unusual pose for a fairy illustration i i will say the first one (i know u like better the second shows...heheheh)

Have fun man...awesome work and very clean :)
