View Full Version : What is so special about Inferno and flame?

Hi...Having never had the chance to work on inferno or flame i was wondering what is so special in them that cant be achieved using Digital Fusion or combustion.

I hear that they run on hi-end sgi systems that allow you work in realtime or near realtime....but isnt it possible to work in near realtime with Digital fusion's rendernodes....using clusters for previews

I mean...say if I was to work with a network of 5-10 computers using DFusions clusters to create previews and renders....would that be the same as working with an sgi.

Are there any other differences between these softwares that make them so expensive.

Thanks in advance...:)

Speed, reliability and power (very powerful toolset). Speed and reliability mostly over combustion*, because more and more typical flame* tools are making it into combustion*; which is quite a good thing.

Digital Fusion, Shake and NUKE are not really less powerful, even though they might lack specific features/capabilities, but they are (almost) as capable as flame* I'd say. Their pricing alone has been enough reason for a lot of companies to use them, instead of the more expensive (hardware) discreet sollutions.

I don't use Digital Fusion myself, so I couldn't answer that.
