Latest Update: Final Image: The Keeper (

Now here’s my final image.

It’s been such a wonderful experience joining this challenge.

I would like to take this moment to thank you guys for all you support.

Good luck to all entrants and wishing you all the best.

03 March 2005, 06:52 AM
nice to see you back again, goodd work in previous contests dude,
maybe this time''s your turn ?
thumbs up

03 March 2005, 09:41 AM (

Okay… Let’s Rock n Roll.

After collecting few thoughts of my entry I scribbled bit of everything that I can think of. Until I come up with a concept that portrays a hunchback being a master. Contrary to our common notion that this lad is always been characterized as servant.

In this piece, the Hunchback is the master and has its own servant.

I named this piece: “Master and Servant”.

03 March 2005, 06:28 PM
nice start Von. nahihiya yata sila mag-post...just kidding! good luck!

03 March 2005, 07:56 PM

Hello World…

Glad to be back…

Nothing so special i just want to thank the following:

Squibbit - Nice to see you back also and for the nice wishes as well.

Uwil – Hey… Glad to see you here. Good luck kabayan.

Riddick – Thank you for the kind words.

Artjunkie – Thanks and yes i will be posting another update later.

04 April 2005, 10:50 AM (

Okay… I am pitching another concept.

A baby that being served and protected as master by an alien/creature that sticks and crawl on the walls and ceiling.

Both are communicating through telepathy.

This creature is capable of eliminating any life form that would present as a treat to the baby.

To date domestic setting

Tighter version of the sketch will be posted later.

04 April 2005, 12:16 PM (

As promised… tight line drawings of my concept.
For sure this will be my final concept.

Any crit from you guys?

04 April 2005, 01:11 PM (

Hello again…

Just created my color palette for this piece… I choose the yellow/brown family of color.
I am aiming to depict a morning ambiance which morning sun rays indirectly lit the room that warmly wraps the body of the two characters.

Any C and C are very much welcome.

04 April 2005, 01:17 PM
:scream: cooolllll....the colors make it look even better...the eyes on the creature look great!

04 April 2005, 04:34 PM

This post have future! Congratulations.! :bounce:

04 April 2005, 06:16 PM
That's creepy and interesting. Excellent light and palette, too. It's still on the rough side, but you did a really nice job of fleshing out the details in the last challenge and I'm sure that this one will be no exception. So I'm looking forward to seeing your refinements. Good luck and have fun with it!

04 April 2005, 06:45 PM
KUMUSTA na man.

Naks!!! okay yung mga sketches mo meng. Yung baby idea, okay lang. But I love the idea of the hunchback and the rat. The composition is great on that and the lighting is strong. I think that would looks awesome when develop. I will be keeping up with your thread dude.
Pag butihin mo.

04 April 2005, 04:43 AM
this baby concept is awesome... love it

but at first glace it looked almost like the alien might have been attacking or atleast intruiged and checking out the baby 'mission impossible' style. could the baby acknowledge the alien... could express they have a relationship.

great work tho... ur probably already thought of that and elimenated possibility so ur welcome to discard mine too.. lol

keep it up

04 April 2005, 09:11 AM (

Diggin on details...

Oro,- Thanks again
lotaH- So as your entry

04 April 2005, 10:50 AM
So you are going with the baby. Oh man... what about the hunchback and the rat  what's going to happen to them... hehe. It's all good. i like this one too. That alien creature looks cool and the detailing is coming a long great. Love the skin texture and colour.

BTW, submit mo na lang yung isa sa regular forum. I would love to see that finish.

Archie

My master & Servant (

04 April 2005, 05:25 PM
Pre, this keeps getting better and better everytime i come here.

Hehe, pinakita ko sa pamangkin ko yung mata nung bata, natakot at umiyak siya.
I love it meng. It's so creepy looking.

Ingat :buttrock:

04 April 2005, 06:31 PM
Wow
Really really really really impressive picture in all the way (subject, technique, look...)
Especially i like the contrast alien skin/baby skin... don't really want to know what lies beneath the baby's skin.

04 April 2005, 06:40 PM
looking great kabayan... m not sure about the baby's right hand though... overall its awesome! love the baby's skin tone...

04 April 2005, 07:17 PM
Very cool, look forward to seeing it when done. :)

04 April 2005, 06:20 AM (

Hi again.

A little pizzazz on the floor design I placed a floor tiles to have weight on details instead of having a flat surface.

I attached the images that used in achieving the effect. I duplicate and multiply the single tile and apply perspective to fit into the design.

What do you think guys?

04 April 2005, 11:48 AM (

Time to put details on the tentacles but at this point I decided to change the tentacles into more appropriate something that will go along with the creature’s body.

More updates coming.

04 April 2005, 12:36 PM
Amazing work, I was watching reruns of the old TV show "V" and this reminded me of it The aliens inside humans. Very cool, a definate contender

Robert Longfield
04 April 2005, 01:14 PM
This has to be the creepiest pic I have seen here. Nice detail in the face and body of the baby. The only thing that I can see needs a little work is the babys right hand. The baby fat creases look too dark.

Great work keep it up!

04 April 2005, 01:49 PM
Looking good, definitely got a bit of a creepy penetrating feeling gong to it with the eyes... excellent work.

the baby does remind me a bit of vin diesel, too, good or bad

Good luck!

04 April 2005, 02:37 PM
Excellent work so far! That baby's eyes are so creepy, and it's perfect that, in contrast, the skin is so normal (and beautifully renderred, i might add.) Myself, I really like the fact that the only weird thing about it at first glance is the eyes. So I confess so being a bit bothered by the fact that it only has 4 toes on each foot. That especially seems weird given that it has five, not four, fingers on each hand. 'though overall, the screen-left one is a bit hard to read and could go either way... Normally one would just naturally assume 5, but when the toes are wrong, all bets are off. Anyhow, i think having a normal number of digits on the feet would help emphasize the oddness of the eyes.

I love the tile on the floor and the renderring of it. I hope that eventually there will be a bit more reflection in it, as it feels like it should be shiny, but knowing how well you did the glass reflections in the GSO Challenge, I'm not worried. Given that the baby is a normal sized bay (which may be unwarranted?) it feels like the base-board at the bottom of the wall is only 2 inches tall. The baby seems relatively close to it, so the size feels a bit off.

Anyhow, looking great and the lighting is fantastic. Good luck with the rest of it!

04 April 2005, 02:48 PM
That baby is creepy! I like it, great job on the eyes! I also like the twiisty neck of the creature. Very nice work!

04 April 2005, 07:29 PM
Hanep, Yun lang ang masasabi ko. Galing talaga ni Kabayan :applause:

Inom tayo dyan

04 April 2005, 03:14 AM
The1st_angel – Thanks for the positive response

Samuraikuroi - Thank you also

Arc80 – Archie, Thank you for being here so often and I really appreciate your support. Bless you meng, extend my regards to your niece. Kita kits.

Spacesnail – Manuel nice to see you around. Your rocking the world again

Arkinet – Kabayan, thanks and yes I notice the right hand too, I will definitely fix that

MacDoobie – Thanks buddy … just keep coming back and I continually surprise you with updates

Dloots – “a definate contender”!? Wow that’s something man. Your impression is very inspiring. Thank you very much

Robert Longfield – Yes, the right hand and the dark creases looks odd and I will absolutely consider your opinion, check my postings on later part.

Jrainwat – Thank you I didn’t realized that the baby looks like vin diesel until you say so, you made me smile…. Anyway thank you for being here.

Fensterer – Phil, thank you very much

Walrus – Yes Yes Thank you very much you are right about the 4 toes “DANG” I didn’t notice that. Mike, you rock me… it was such helpful and honest criticism.

Thank you also for the inputs about the floor reflection and about the baseboard, those corrections that you have just mentioned are considered highly valuable to me. Thank you again.

04 April 2005, 09:02 AM
the babies mouth looks too formed.. a child that young shouldnt have that much facial definition. (thats whats nice about drawing babies... simple and effective)

if u actually block off the rest of the image and look at the mouth it looks like a full grown female of teenage dude.

04 April 2005, 06:11 AM
Tom thanks with your opinion about the baby’s mouth. Yes, I stood by your judgment “if” I were going to draw or paint real babies or somebody’s offspring if you will. But don’t you worry, that baby is a 100 year old alien wrap in baby’s skin.

Let me refresh you with my concept: The baby is the master and communicates with the servant/creature through telepathy and the creature that is presented on my piece is destined to serve and will protect the baby from any possible treat or danger.

Through the facial gesture of the baby is the best way for me to show that the toddler is capable to rule over the creature. Meaning the baby is NOT a normal baby and doesn’t have a brain like any normal tot.

Thanks again Tom.

Btw, don’t you find the baby’s eye too “simple and effective”?

04 April 2005, 12:38 PM (

Another tweak on the ambiance and I am happy with the result. This is the kind of vibes that I opt to -light and yet moody. It gives an impression of creepiness and drama.

I am almost done with tentacles also.

C and C please.

04 April 2005, 03:53 PM
astig kabayan... my suggestion, hmmm... maybe put a li'l gooey substance sa creature, yung medyo tumutulo parang laway tsaka some glare sa skin para yucky  heheheehe, ala alien tol... sa bata maybe add a lil more vein para mukhang na e-expand yung brain nya faster than his body... besides that cant think of anything as of now... be back for more... pinoy power!!!

04 April 2005, 02:54 AM
Agree with ARKINET. Tsaka yung pader sa likod masyadong empty. Maybe some picture frame or painting. Tsaka nasan yung chupon nang bata meng :D BAlik ulit ako. PINOY POWER ALL THE WAY

04 April 2005, 05:20 PM
rply: yeh i do quite like the eyes... what about a more piercing red tho.... something to make them pop out at u? the dull red/brownish has a nice effect but a vibrant colour reflects more along the lines of electricity -> power -> machine -> control. subconciously we all make that link... maybe its something to think about... and it would more closely match the alien's eyes.

04 April 2005, 05:25 PM
the painting of the baby is fantastik, extremly realistic, a great work

04 April 2005, 05:54 PM
nice job, i love the eyes on the kid

04 April 2005, 07:37 PM
OOooh creepy concept...nice coloring and lighting

alien looks a lil dry tho he needs some wet shine and ooze

05 May 2005, 02:10 PM
Arkinet and Arc80 – Kabayan…I will take that… Yes!!! Pinoy Power!!!

Tilite – Tom I will consider that… thanks again

MDN67 – Nice to see a familiar face

Malcolmvexxed and Scarlet – Thanks for dropping by

05 May 2005, 02:20 PM (

Another update:
This time I am doing the walls…The wall décor is not quite aligned. I will deal with that on later part. My major concern for now is the lighting and color composition. I will have a complete run through in doing some tweaking few days before i upload my final image.

05 May 2005, 03:21 PM
tol, almost done ka na ah? stil looking great...

05 May 2005, 05:31 PM

05 May 2005, 02:10 PM (

Added an eye candy on the blank wall.
Thanks to Arc80. Meng…tuloy tuloy na to.

I attached also the images (process) on how I made the frame.

05 May 2005, 04:38 PM

05 May 2005, 12:22 AM
Woohoo, Ang galing, galing mo, bilib ako sayo...Krystala...ooops, maling kanta, hehehe.
Perfecto pre. Now it's a lot balance. All good texturing bro.

05 May 2005, 06:25 AM (

This is how it looks like without those images (Workflow)attached.

05 May 2005, 08:16 AM
Very it. The rendering is fantastic.

Gives me the chills. Great affect.

05 May 2005, 08:45 AM

05 May 2005, 01:07 PM
oookaaay...chills... im having a serious steven king moment here... TAK!

I would have to agree....but a really well done image :applause: excellent work..

05 May 2005, 03:56 PM
nice! i really enjoyed looking at your process.. what a creepy looking baby!.

05 May 2005, 04:42 PM
I love this piece. It's creepy, it's beautiful, it's strange and it's cool. Did I mention that I love this piece?
Just because I feel obligated to say something in addition to telling you how great you are;
corners of rooms almost always have something in them and are almost never left empty. I don't really know why I'm pointing that out, because I don't really think you should add anything in the corner, but it might be something to think about. The fact that it's empty makes it creepier. Like it's an empty house that the real estate lady might be stopping by to show any minute (and creepy horror film ensues) or something. It just somehow makes it feel not quite right. (As if the baby with the evil alien eyes wasn't enough "not quite right")
Great Stuff!

05 May 2005, 06:45 PM
Very it. The rendering is fantastic.

Gives me the chills. Great affect.

I'd put some of the remaining time on detailing the
guardian creature ,seems a bit too blurry/pencily
in parts to my eyes

those painting frame buildup pics were nice too

05 May 2005, 06:46 PM
damn thats one cool baby hehe.

05 May 2005, 01:28 PM (

Another update:

I changed the tiles and added a table. What do you guys think?

05 May 2005, 03:46 PM
this is turning out to be one of my favourite

maybe I'd move the table a bit to the right,
so it would take about half the space it takes now,
so that a bit of the drawer handle would still be
visible.. or just leave it as is :D

05 May 2005, 04:29 PM
amazing von.. i just dont like the ball..
c ya !

05 May 2005, 03:52 AM
Wow, galing mo talaga meng. Super linis nang pag painting mo. Tsaka right smack on ka sa texturing. I like the new floor too btw. Just one suggestion, just like squibbit said about the table, either move it to the right or just a bit to the left to overlap it more with the tyanak... i mean baby, hehehe. Tapusin mo na pre.

Love the works on your website btw. Ako'y luluhod sa inyong kagalingan

Pinoy Power!!!

05 May 2005, 03:29 AM
Arc80- Thanks again tol...
Gra7- I have a second thought on that too
Squibbit - Nice to see you again. Good point :) I will try that definately
To Noob,SavageCreature,T-lapia,element5,nebezial and Paul Davidson- Thanks guys for showing support

05 May 2005, 03:35 AM (

I painted a lamp on the wall that could somehow fill the area. Im thinking also of creating a plant on the corner and maybe some books on the table.

Til my next update.

05 May 2005, 03:51 AM
That's a nice add on pre. The lamp is perfect and the books would definately be a good add ons. maybe put some of them on the floor or something that belongs to the alien. Huwag masyado nga lang. baka maging busy yung piece mo.

Sige pre. Ingat ka na lang diyan.
Taga saan ka nga pala sa pinas pre?

cheers

05 May 2005, 04:38 AM
The painting of the image is looking pretty nice right now and that creepy. Those eyes!

05 May 2005, 01:39 AM
Hmmm . . still love the piece, but don't like the lamp much. The value of the lamp is very close to the same of the value of the baby's head, so it flattens the image, I think, taking away a lot of its depth. The table is great, and it makes it look like the house is lived in. Makes me wonder what kind of family lives there!

05 May 2005, 01:42 PM
SavageCreature - Thanks for the comment that really prompted me to acknowledge your insight. I will try fixing the value if it still won't work I can take that out in a fly

Weslouie - Thanks for dropping by

Arc80 - Salamat uli?

05 May 2005, 01:52 PM (

Added a heater on the lower left of the wall.

05 May 2005, 02:50 PM
doing good , dude

05 May 2005, 01:57 PM
great work.
your lighting at the conner behind the alien head works so the eyes of the baby a lot.
good luck to u and thank for ur message.

05 May 2005, 03:58 PM
astig ang details pre, ... very subtle ang creep hehehehe... so ayaw mo talaga ng me tumutulo ha? neat picky bang master?:D anyway, great job as usual... hopefully i could get somethng done this week...

05 May 2005, 11:26 PM
cool add on. Mahihintay nalang ako sa huling litrato mo.

Ingat meng. Balita ko mainit daw dyan sa pinas.

05 May 2005, 01:56 PM (

Here’s the plant that I opt to do…
Arkinet the “li'l gooey substance on the creature” will be seen on my next update.

05 May 2005, 02:16 PM
The lamp looks better. Did you change it, or was it just the addtion of more background detail that improved the balance? However, now the leaf behind the alien's head (directly above it's left eye) looks like it's growing out of the alien's ear (if he's got ears). I don't know if it's just its positioning or if it's got to do with the highlights on the leaf as well, but maybe it should be pushed back into the background a bit more. Still love this piece, though. One of the best in the challenge. Great work and good luck

05 May 2005, 04:16 PM
It's looking nice, but I think it's getting too busy. The other additions along the fringes of the image work okay to define the space, but i feel that the plant right in the center behind the areas of the central focus distracts from the faces. But that may just be me. Good luck with it!

05 May 2005, 05:21 PM
Hi cabertevon, your work is more spectacular, I am on the bottom for
the decorations and your tiling, cheer.

05 May 2005, 02:34 AM
SavageCreature and Walrus - Hi guys i am really happy when you drop by. I really enjoy reading your comments, very precise, honest and constructive. Definately i will fix the plant, i may darken value so that i won't over rule the alien.

Tranchefeux - Thanks, i also love your MS and GSO entries.

05 May 2005, 02:42 AM (

Hello again.

Another update...

I added a frame and a couple of books above the table and darken(Bit)the value of the plant.

05 May 2005, 02:43 AM
I love this illustration :)

When I look at it i almost hear :"Witness the power of the dark side... "

05 May 2005, 03:29 AM
Still one of my favorites I've seen! I may have left the plant out but that's just a personal preference. Plant in or out doesn't really matter, still an awesome piece!

05 May 2005, 05:54 AM
yea this has got to be one of the top entries...
i see u got the photo and painting places empty for
now.. want suggestions ? :D

05 May 2005, 06:04 AM
Almost done ka narin... Malapit na :D

05 May 2005, 01:25 PM (

Here’s a small update before I call it done.

A little gooey substance coming out from the creature’s mouth as suggested by Arkinet.

Thanks kabayan. Pinoy Power!!!

05 May 2005, 09:19 PM
Some drips on the floor would do it for the gooey stuff, heehee. Okay, i'm being anal now. yung dulo nang laway (the long one) is tangent sa linya nang plant box mo sa background.

Yun lang po. Ingat meng

05 May 2005, 09:41 PM
Hey there,

I need to give an overal critique of my opinions, i know your close to finishing but maybe it can help. I love everything about this piece, the quality, etc. The only thing that keeps bothering me when I come back for a new update is that the creature is not fitting the rest of the setting. I know you want to show off your textures and pencil feel. To get around this, I do a layering approach with lower oppacity each layer, then merge, create new layer lower oppacity color, then merge, until it builds up. then do a multiply layer over my colors at the end of my earlier pencil work with a low oppacity and do a high contrast and brightness so the details are stronger. Then do a small glausian blur, then merge. This way it will look more realistic as your scene, but you still get all of your pencil detail. I hope I made sense! Good luck with your entry as its top notch none the less. Ill look forward to your future updates!

05 May 2005, 09:50 PM
Hi Cabertevon, looking very good I must say! Cunning use of tiled textures too. The one thing that might be tweaked is the contrast on the baby, it just needs a touch more for it to gel with the rest of the pic - it's just very slightly washed out, though it's very close. Good luck in the final reckoning, I'm surprised this thread hasn't seen more activity because you've got a great pic here. Well done!

05 May 2005, 06:39 AM
Arc80 – Sumubra yata ang kape mo. Pag nag camp out kayo sa EP3 sama ako ha?

Shaun – That’s a brilliant suggestion… Definitely I will try that and thank you for the wishes

Speaky – Jesse, what a pleasant surprise!!! Yes, definitely I will do something about that
Btw, let me take this moment to say that I am impressed with your sketching prowess; Your GSO thread rocks.

05 May 2005, 07:30 AM
excellent lighting in the scene!
Floor is looking really nice. Also most of the things in there, but the monster really needs lot more work.

Specially edges of the monster.. Those rims. They look really flat and not really curving in space. It gets more evident in the upper part of the picture.

Good luck!

John Keates
05 May 2005, 05:47 PM
This is one of my favorite themes here. The texturing is superb also and I like the icky feel of the colours. I'm not sure if the baby needs a vein over his eye but what is it for me to say?

The subject matter feels similar to mine. We seem to be quite like-minded.

John Keates
05 May 2005, 05:49 PM
[EDIT]: Double post... sorry.

05 May 2005, 10:24 PM (

I think this will be my final image.

I added a toy that broke into half. I come up with this idea after few hours deliberating with myself asking what else I may add to support my concept visually on how the baby and the creature can communicate. I decided to create a toy that somewhat will serve as supplemental communication device between the two.

05 May 2005, 10:35 PM
haha, that little toy ! nasty!

your best thus far in the three contests, not that
all weren't cool , good luck, i rate this high

05 May 2005, 05:14 AM

I don't know if it's too late or not, but is that drool dripping from the alien? It looks like it might be something on the sides of the wooden planter in the corner. Maybe if you just extended the longer strand of drool just enough to extend it past the bottom line of the planter by a smidge it would appear more forward in the image.
I love what you did with the lamp and the plant. Perfect integration.
Beautiful image!!

Hi! Ur piee is truly amaizing! Rendering skills on top of possibilities :) Just please adjust contrast and play with curves a bit... Pic is quite bright and "without" colors right now. I did play with ur pic a bit in PS, just to see what can u get out of this piece and I must say that with some minor changes in level and curves menues, u can really give much more depth and conviencing look to this pic. Just my opinion :) Great great pic!
