Challenge Page (

Latest Update: Final Image: The forest's edge (

The queen of the Woodling people, she was called the Bride, has come to the Forest´s Edge, there to meet her servant from the Otherworld, the girl Tilda. Accompanying her is her entourage _ her consort, the Prince, perches on the tip of the branch of a great oak tree which is being used as a staff by one of the beast-kind, Tursus, all horns and muscle. A monster from the Inner Groves, built like an ox and twice as tall as a man,
it has been brought to serve as the Bride´s protector, for many dangers lurk amongst the trees where the forest and the Otherworld meet. He is a reluctant bodyguard, and he growls angrily. The Prince tempers Tursus´s simmering fury with a steely gaze, and to further ensure that the beast does not wander away, the woodlings have  branch-crafted its legs into the roots of a tree that have taken root deep below the ground, and thus immobilised, the giant squats, brooding. It remembers the sting of the Prince´s gem-staff well enough to realise not to vent its discontentment.
The woodling, Iolo, the princeling, a youngster who swings on a plank of wood suspended by a rope that the monster holds in its huge hand. Iolo swings listlessly – he hates having to go on this trips, he is never let out of sight of the Bride. He dreams of escaping the forest, and the adventures he will have in the Otherworld.
While all this goes on, the Bride greets Tilda with an offering of gold coins. A tear trickles down Tilda´s cheek. Her feet and left hand have been merged into the twisting roots of the forest floor. Her right hand suspends a mobile of glass orbs that gently tinkle as they spin back and forth over a cot that lies next to her. Within a new born baby lies, dressed in I outlandish red clothes, a pointed red cap and scarlet pointy booties. The child is mesmerised by the spinning balls, reaching up to grab them, oblivious of its surroundings.
The girl looks up at the gold – payment for the child. She knows that as soon she leaves the Forest´s Edge the precious metal will transform into acorns and empty snail shells. Her eyes shift to the silver dagger that the Bride holds in her other hand. The Queen desires the child, and the child must be paid for, a fair trade in this strange land. As soon as she acquiesces, the fingers of her left hand curl back into flesh, withdrawing into her arm from the musty earth. Tilda falteringly reaches out to accept the coins.
Unbeknownst to them all, weird figures flit in the darkness between the trunks of the towering trees. Their hands and feet ends in stinging barbs, their wings insect-like, their bodies gaunt. They skim through the shadows silently, coming ever closer to the group at the edge of the Forest. They are drawn of the sweet aroma of a new-born man-child – these creatures, if allowed, will sting the child and feed upon its cries, and the tears of innocents are as the finest claret to them. Wary of hulking brute, who would swat them as flies, the mosquito-men approach cautiously, the net of their ambush almost ready…

thanks all mates and friends for a great time, see you.

ruff idea, (Woodlings) is nomads that are wery gifted in magic, They can freze any organic materia to wood and twist it to any shape they want, and unfreze it when the wont some help whith moving again.(wiktims)play material in ordinary day and like a donky in all the outher days).
this is a ordinary day in there life when they have found a plase that they feel confurtable in(noving them well, its only for some days then they are bored, away again).
they are realatives to fairys but ages ago they lost there ability to fly, some genes are from elfs(but for sure not the hight).

a quik sketch, (mok up), concept, of woodling king.

03-25-2005, 11:45 AM
heheh yo mate! :D , i think this comp . suits u fine ? :D

03-25-2005, 11:54 AM
a quik sketch of woodling king.
Quick sketch???
Looks great man! Forgive me if I'm wrong, but looks like both sketches are renders from 3D models with a 2D filter. Is just because the perspective is totally perfect in both images and the lines over the surface are incredible precise, simulating even subtle specular in the legs. The contour lines are also perfect and clean. Well, congrats!

03-25-2005, 12:04 PM
its alittle of bouth mok up,render, scetch, thats how i work and i sending model later.
see you and

03-25-2005, 12:07 PM

The concept is fine, awaiting 3d now unpatiently :)

03-25-2005, 02:14 PM
The concept is amazing, based on your previous works this should be a breath taking scene. More than looking forward to your work!

03-25-2005, 03:30 PM
neat and fast sketch Alex. it's getting warm in here :D. you got style. "go on man".

03-25-2005, 03:37 PM
Great scetch!

Maybe you should take the creature into "contrapost". (You know the pitch of hip and shoulders are opposite of each other.) I think it would be more dynamic!

But you have an excellent drawing stile!

03-25-2005, 03:40 PM
Beautiful sketches - really! Concept is very promising too, looking forward to see where it goes. Good luck!

03-26-2005, 05:02 AM

03-26-2005, 09:21 PM
Blast you're fast!

Great stuff, I always love the faces you model. To get into details is silly but it looks like you can handle it, I think the legmuscles llok weird on them. It'd because they appear to be very agile and mobile I think. Just thought I'd mention it.

03-26-2005, 10:16 PM
Quick sketch???
Looks great man! Forgive me if I'm wrong, but looks like both sketches are renders from 3D models with a 2D filter. Is just because the perspective is totally perfect in both images and the lines over the surface are incredible precise, simulating even subtle specular in the legs. The contour lines are also perfect and clean. Well, congrats!

Wow man I have to agree!I have no doubt that these are renders of already done models. And to take into account you already got two well developed models done in 4 days. These have 2D filter written all over them.Oh yah, these are already made from before the challenge.I just cant think any different.Sorry.

03-27-2005, 06:39 AM
thanks for answer.
i start up whith doing bulk of body in pose in 3d ( then render it)
then in photoshop i put filtter on it (lines)
then i sketch the details i like to have on them.
and some tweaks in liquify.
then i go back to my model and sculpt the details and the changes i made.
thats how i do my concepts. (i am not doing a 2d sketch ,i am youst doing my concept )
and its silly to say i did them before challenge start.
i dont now how fast you model (kylebrn) but i can do it, sorry.
i have already said its a mix of render and sketch in a earlyer letter and its says under in text to. see you and

03-27-2005, 06:50 AM

hello blackdragoncg, seems you didn't see it ?:deal: :)

By the way Alex.h., am i wrong or do you use cinema as well for the rendering?
If you do so, how does it work between the too of them?

03-27-2005, 07:01 PM

pretty nice modeling job your doing there

03-27-2005, 07:03 PM
thanks mates.
i use voxels youst now in sculpting mode, and voxels dont do wires ( if something, point cloud), bout when i export it for rendering in c 4d and texture in body paint i export it as stl or obj, then i get wires, but it up to me if i wont clean wires or not, clean wires = lots of more time on figure, and i am not going to rig this, so i youst going to export it (messy).
i hope i answerd your bouth quastions on that and see you later, my comp youst crashed and stupid me havent saved for 1.5 hours, so back to latest save.

03-28-2005, 12:23 PM
thanks mates.
i do not use zbrush, but it has some kind of simularitys.
i usely start whith (voxel clay blobs) and murtches some of them in to eathother,
then its youst push and pull and carv or ad more (voxel clay).
i use a haptic arm for that. here is a example of my work flow,(head for next woodling)

03-28-2005, 12:29 PM
Very cool Zbrushing...even if is not ZBrush LOL
Man that hardware/software looks very interesting. Can you send me one...for free? :D

Great work man!

03-28-2005, 12:32 PM
u have a extrodinary eye for beautiful forms.

an exceptional talent even for the elite of any type of design community.

u really produce great work

cant wait to see the creation progress

all the best

03-28-2005, 12:39 PM
lol even with your new signature lot of stoneshed people around.... that not so're great man!
I'll just add that i tried the phantom model once, it's TRULY hard to handle, well maybe with a lot of work plus some real sculpt experience....but the feeling as you said is so exciting, i hope and guess it'll be a more current tool later (and less expensive too lol). No way to be as fast with traditionnal 3d modeling...Plus the import export of the voxels will certainly improve with little more time.
Watching your mod, i feel the life "you" can have usualy with 2d and oftenly lost in 3d because of this tool (and your talent!)

progres pics so you can see how i work. soon finisht one.

03-28-2005, 07:05 PM
its only going to be finisht work from now on, so please dont ask for work in progress,
no one is interestead when you send it, and if you do send it, its no reply,
so have a good evening and see you

03-28-2005, 07:12 PM
I actually liked the in-progress shots you post. Sorry i hadn't had a chance to reply to them until now. (lots of entries).

She looks very " no nonsense." The way you've protrayed her, kind makes it feel like she is the one running things.

03-28-2005, 07:57 PM
Amazing Alex! As someone said before, you´re a modeling machine! ahahha stop for a while, go to the cinema, see the birds, ahahaha:D
Stunning my friend!! keep it up!!

03-28-2005, 08:01 PM
Nice work. No critiques, but please keep the WIP coming. I know it makes a difference to me.

03-28-2005, 08:06 PM

Hey alex.h., please keep posting chunks of what you're up to, it's most inspiring...
Anyway I love the strength in this character, great work..

03-28-2005, 08:37 PM
It almost seems as if you're sketching in 3d man!! really nice of you to show us how you do it!

Will definitely try it, maybe it works differently in ZBrush though.

Keep on keepin' on.

03-28-2005, 08:53 PM
Coming along real nice Alex.....Real interesting work flow.....The results are coming along very nicely....."Whimsical" key word here, and I think it's great to see.......

03-29-2005, 01:27 AM
hey there dude... very nice clean modeling man and might i say you are very very quick i bet long hours spent...

awesome my friend awesome.. i love your style.

03-29-2005, 02:41 AM (

little story change.
the woodlings are human size in a
world of big creatures, trees and so on, the rest is the same.
writing a long story later.
more tweaks will be done on figure later on, now i need to do a slim and nice loking woodling queen.

03-29-2005, 02:50 AM
hahaha, great and elegant change. Love your work ALex always did! looking forward to your queen now! keep it up!

03-29-2005, 06:32 AM
hmmm... with this Lady in the head of the woodling family, do they need magic then, it´s look like she is stubborn and settled enough too rule the beast on her own... like the new turn of the story now... a mix of humans and woodlings :applause:

03-29-2005, 06:47 AM
Amazing modelling :applause: bravo :wip:

03-29-2005, 06:54 AM
Very nice modeling, and fast. I just checked out the freeform site, and now I can see how you can 3d sculp so fast. Its like a wacom for sculpters!! Too bad they didn't have a price on the site. Keep it up.

03-29-2005, 10:22 AM
Nice advancement since i last checked this thread... Very very nice modelling and the story is quite nice...:applause:

03-29-2005, 10:39 AM
Great updates:thumbsup:
...and it is not true that no one interested in your work in progress. Freeform concept is so less known tool and diffrent even from ZBrush, that many don't know and don't understand your work process.

03-29-2005, 11:50 AM
thanks for posting wip alex. It takes time so double thanks man.

It almost seems as if you're sketching in 3d man!! really nice of you to show us how you do it!

Från sverige egentligen?

Happy modelling!

03-29-2005, 06:36 PM
hello all new and (old)mates.
Ordinary sculpting day today so, sorry no updates today, im tired,
If you think this dead line of the challenge is hard, dont go in to plastic figures proces.
imagine your figure (that have to look cool) have to drop out of two bits of steel whith no undercuts(no catch enywere).
only to calculate the split line (were the two steel blocks meet) is a pain in the (b).
and from there you got to have a 90 degree angle (sorry more than that) but almost,on ewery single detail so it dont get stuk in the mould,
i do it by site today, thats why i dont remember exactly angle, but i love it, i love challenge.
i hope i have more power tomorow evening after some slep and work so i can go on doing my queen,
(i sleept like 3 hours a night this eastern) so i think i can relax tonight.
see you all and good sculpting, sorry(modeling).almoust forgot

03-29-2005, 06:39 PM
cool model alex.. is this zbrush !?

Zlatan B.
03-29-2005, 07:20 PM
Man you are fast! Keep up the good work!

Also I read that you use FreeForm. But which one, Concept or Modeling Plus. I was on their website but they don't have a price or anything. Have you tried ZBrush and if so what is the difference?

03-29-2005, 07:34 PM
nice model !!! realy !

03-29-2005, 07:35 PM
thanks mates.
zlatan, i use freeform concept and clay tools and if you want answers on prize or any tech questions you can send a mail to a friend on this forum ( James_Mason )
he works for sensable and can give you all the answers.
sorry havent used zbrush yet, so i cant get you an answer on that, i think i go to a friend and try it out and can give you some answers later. see you all and

03-29-2005, 07:50 PM

Great looking work so far! and Nice story to go with it! Great man!! :D

03-30-2005, 04:57 AM
Hi again alex.h., I just had a look at 'freeform concept'
and I gotta say wow!
I was a little envious of your skills before but now I'm absolutely deep ocean emerald green with envy...
Keep riding that cutting edge Alex!

03-30-2005, 05:27 AM
hey alex ....looks awesome I have always loved fantasy ...who hasn't ...your work is very inspiring

03-30-2005, 09:06 AM
insane man! INSANE! Your one of a kind definatly :)

03-30-2005, 12:10 PM
thanks mates.
i have always loved fantasy to, i love organic sculpting and fantasy is wery sutibal for that,
freeform is a wonderful tool (program) if you love freehand modeling, and you can do straight line design easy as well.
i think one of its major advantise compered whith zbrush is that you can work on multiple pieces at the same time on screen in 3d mode (i dont think you can do that in zbrush ?).
see you later and

03-30-2005, 12:49 PM
I see that Freeform concept can join muliple pieces, so you can add more geometry in one place in work process. ZBrush can't join two geometry, and can't add more geometry in one place (olny can divide mesh, or add edge loops). And you can feel that what you are sculpting.

03-30-2005, 01:15 PM
I like you work so far, very nice.
By the way-are you the same alex hedstrom that works for games workshop?
Cheers, rob

03-30-2005, 03:43 PM
thanks and by the way it joins pieces (booleon) in seconds never mind geometry and you can smoth it thogether whith one stroke and split the piece as easy.
pariahrob, yes, i am a figure designer at games workshop.
see you later and

03-30-2005, 03:51 PM

04-01-2005, 01:08 AM
hey always great to see your advencement!
i can feel her moove!

by the way i have one more question :)
how do you mapp your tex in c4d since the mesh must be a little messy...? Do you unwarp before the bodypaintwork? Or does freeform export a UV map too?

good continuation

04-01-2005, 01:15 AM
becouse this is a 3d still i gone go for the fast and lovly camera maping,
outhervise i have to unwrap it in body paint.
thanks and see you later.

04-01-2005, 03:02 AM
Hi Alexander, how did I miss your entry ???!!! and a belated welcome to the challenge :)

best of luck :)

04-01-2005, 07:44 AM
I had to post in this thread.:) I have seen beautiful models from a lot of challengers, but nothing is close to the artistic quality and the harmonic movement of your models. My hat off!!

Good luck!

04-01-2005, 08:34 AM
Hey alex: looking great!! keep it going

Awesome modeling Alex... I like your concept... I'm waiting to see more

04-01-2005, 01:34 PM
this is great, everytime i see a post of urs im so impressed i up my expectations for the next... and ur fulfilling evertime.

what are the chances of u giving us a quick rend of what uve got in basic positions within the sceen?

04-01-2005, 01:35 PM
You make it look so easy man...

04-01-2005, 01:43 PM

She is absolutely beautiful. I love her legs and how the clothes seem to move.

For lack of words just fantastic! I sincerely think you should make her more obviously present than the rest. An eye catcher so to speak, looks like a winner this one!!!

edit:if you're going for camera mapping won't you have trouble when the renderer starts to filter your maps, most renderers don't have a good filtering core. I often see renders that look like they have emboss bumpmapping applied!

04-01-2005, 04:33 PM
hi and thanks for all great answers,
my sculpting is fast, yes, because i have done ordinary sculpting ewery day for 8 years for a living, and freeform sculpting is like ordinary sculpting but in the computer.
the texturing is going to be tricky, havent done so mutch of that, so i need al the time i can get to pull that of.
i going to paint all my textures whith camera maping in body paint, thats what i did for toy fairys and seam to work for me, that only doing 3d stills, no animation for me ,yet.
i going to export some models from freeform (voxels) to c4d(polys) this wekend and start to put them in ther positions after i have done a creadle and (nany)(human) story not set yet.
see you later and

04-01-2005, 04:36 PM
Great modeling Alex. Although I noticed her sleeves are almost skin tight.....spandex??

04-01-2005, 04:46 PM

how can i get that result with the cloths ? you model it by hand ? some simulations ? program that u use ... tx

04-03-2005, 09:13 AM

04-03-2005, 05:50 PM (

04-03-2005, 05:53 PM
it'll be worth it dude

04-03-2005, 06:00 PM
can't beleive each new post is more and more suprising :applause:
update of the wings is so well done, and as usual your composition lines (this arc that bring the eye from top of the image to the baby:thumbsup:   ), details, mod etc are wonderfully executed. And the way you put movement on your sculpting is just so natural  (hairs, toy...)

well good luck with your computer, don't forget to backup evry time!
maybe you'll have to recompose every thing in post...?

a true pleasure, so once again big up alex :buttrock:

04-03-2005, 06:12 PM

This is amazing! Keep them coming!

peace, pete

04-03-2005, 07:14 PM
Wonderful posing. However, I think this has been bothering me some. But the queens right hand on the image. But its her left hand. The one she is holding out seems alil bit like a frogs. I think it would be good if you could sculp out the fingers some more.

Best of luck with texuring.

04-03-2005, 09:10 PM
thanks mates and mireneye you probbably havent seen that she is holding a oval stone in her hand, later its going to be a sort of toy for her baby, see you and

04-03-2005, 09:11 PM

04-03-2005, 09:16 PM
Hahahaha, how high is your polycount... i don't envy you on texturing, except, your smart speedmodelapplication does the same for you that does zbrush for me... does it?
love your art. always did, the scene comes together and opens a view in your beautifull dreamscape. keep it my friend, hehe, sitting here and wait for more!

04-03-2005, 09:46 PM
virtuoso: thanks alot mate,

04-03-2005, 10:06 PM
Ho so nice....very nice work Alex!!!

04-03-2005, 10:48 PM
Oh, so thats how it is. I guess you dont need to model things that wont really be showing in the image. Altho, I usually do that anyways, in case I ever want to use the model for something else, which I practically never do. But you never know. Nevertheless, looking very good. It'll be interesting to see how texturing will progress.

04-04-2005, 01:19 AM
Haha....yeah you might want to get the W.H.O.P.P.E.R to start rendering LOL.

Looking good man

*Note: For those of you too young to know what the WHOPPER was the U.S. Defense Systems CPU in the movie "War Games" featuring young Matthew Broderick.

04-04-2005, 02:16 AM
Excellent model, Alex! Really digging your work and seeing it progress. Keep it up!
