Challenge Page (

Latest Update: Final Image: Conquistadors : new Incas' God (

Here's my final image for this challenge. I wanted to represent a scene where an Inca Priest is kneeling in front of a Conquistador believing he is a God. He gives him a sceptre, symbol of power. The sun falls behind the Inca pyramid to symbolize the fall of the Inca civilisation. I wanted to include each elements which made believe to Inca that Conquistadors were God : coming from sea with big boat, with horses and gun. Now the inca priest is kneelling in front of an human while a few time ago he venerated Inca's god symbolized by statue behind the conquistador.

03-26-2005, 12:14 AM
Good luck Fred, I wait to see your image:bounce:

03-28-2005, 12:34 PM (

My main idea is to show an Inca Priest (worshipper of Moon) brandishing an ancient artefact against a servant who disobeyed an order. The priest is punishing him (transforming him to a werewolf), showing him the true power of the Moon, their master. The action may take place in a temple during an eclipse (not sure of that).

03-28-2005, 12:39 PM (

First part of modeling ... started with a cube and only used polygonal modelisation ... the priest is not finished at all !

03-28-2005, 12:42 PM (

... still work on the Priest ...

03-28-2005, 12:47 PM
@ jddog : Yes we are (crazy):)
@ e-maje,pitiwazou : thanks

03-28-2005, 01:08 PM
hey mate its coming along nicely ... but too me the eye's look alittle wierd, i think it might be the bidge of the nose

03-28-2005, 08:23 PM
That started very good my friend... with some minor changes, that's will be perfect...
Ears seem a little bit plate and maybe too small, and not so high... the armpits don't seem to go up enough.
The higher part of the nose seems too broad, too powerful, whereas the end of the nostrils seems to go up a little too much.
The thorax seems ttoo flat on the front, making it resemble to an action man :scream:
But it's only of small details, the unit is already very coherent and splendid, good courage for the continuation.

03-28-2005, 08:43 PM
this is the first time i see your challenge, good concept, the modeling of the first characters is good but you will be added more detail on the body and affined the muscles, good work
aller frenchie donne le meilleur:thumbsup:

03-29-2005, 06:36 AM
That come really nice out, congrats :wip:

03-29-2005, 06:40 AM (

... i changed a little bit the shape of the head ....

03-29-2005, 06:51 AM
@MDN67 : Thanks, until now i just worked on the head (reason is bellow)
@Lemog : Thanks, for the thorax i get some problems with my reference images, i see two references (on books) and they don't put the same number of muscles so i give up for some hours this part ! I'll go to a shop to see a book of anatomy as i don't want to make a man "Frankeinstein" :) ...
@eddieellis,jddog : Thanks

03-29-2005, 06:49 PM (

... the main part of the priest (Inca)'s necklace

03-29-2005, 06:59 PM
i like this model..

good luck !! dont stop !!

03-30-2005, 06:48 AM
Good work Fred, but i think that the incas was the servant of the sun ;)

03-30-2005, 06:52 AM
Very simpathic your necklace...

03-31-2005, 09:50 AM (

... a quick test to see how the necklace goes on the Priest ... will make some modifications later ...

03-31-2005, 10:10 AM
@bouledpue : ... the concept is not definitive but one of the idea was to do the scene during an eclipse while the moon "eats" the sun (so appears to defeat the sun) to show how easily some people can turn over (change) their belief in favor of the most powerfull ... this will evoluate as a have lot's of variations in my head ...
@Lemog, gra7 : Thanks !!!

03-31-2005, 06:53 PM
Yes, i like the idea of the eclipse.

04-01-2005, 05:58 AM
Your idea of eclipse agree me too... to following then  Have a good day :wavey:

04-02-2005, 06:06 AM (

... an evolution of my initial concept ... still take place in the same place but in a different scene ... here the discovery of a new pre-colombian tribe (Inca) by explorer, ... the tribe tought they were God (as for example they had horses) ... in relation to the history of the discovery of the american continent ...

04-02-2005, 08:30 AM (

... firsts steps of modelisation of the horse ... will add more detail now ...

04-02-2005, 10:42 AM (

... i've added some details to the head ...

04-02-2005, 11:20 AM
Hi, Fred76!
Glad you're with us!
Well, I see you've got prety fast progress in your project.
Human just great, but for horse I suggest that you bend it's rear legs backward (oposite direction). In other aspects - looks cool, mate

04-02-2005, 12:07 PM
Hey Fred76, welcome to the equine modellers group!!

I really like your idea. The original idea of the werewold really had my imagination going. Is there any way that you might still keep the idea of the werewolf around? I'd really like to see how you tackle the werewolf as your human models were looking really good. I particularly have to congratulate you on the facial for the Inca. They had really strong noses but the rest were soft edges.

04-03-2005, 10:41 AM (

... i modified the legs to match better with horses' legs ...

04-03-2005, 10:58 AM
@aleinlatin: Thanks, the werewolf idea is not dead at all ;)... i'll put it if i get time enough to do it ... my latest concept is maybe not my definitive one ... my definitive will depend on how many time i'll have to finish my scene ...
@Deryk: Thanks, ... the horse is still a "work in progress" ... but working on it ... i've started the modification you talked about in my latest post ...

04-03-2005, 11:00 AM
that's a great model of horse! I will be doing one as well, so I'll keep an eye on you!

the second idea is siply great! I love the fact that more and more challengers are looking in to history to find ideas!!! rather than to make robots and R.R.Tolkins [no disrespect though...] characters!!!

keep going!

04-03-2005, 11:04 AM
Ave Fred76,
Nice work man, especially the neclace!!! Waiting for your textures!!!
Good luck!!!

04-03-2005, 02:11 PM
great concepts so far.. its looking really good... and modeling is looking nice and clean.. great start

04-03-2005, 06:49 PM
Wish you good mood during your work Fred76!
Glad that my suggestions helped a little:)
Wanna see your next updates!

04-03-2005, 07:45 PM (

... first part of modeling for the conquistador's head ...

04-03-2005, 08:11 PM
J++ Dragon : Thanks, i'll try to add texture soon but i actually concentrate on modeling ;) ... why is there only 24 hours in a day ... i need more :)
Deryk : every comments helps
Neeno, Miezis : Thanks

04-03-2005, 08:16 PM
Nice concept with that Inca think goiing on. really nice The body and the face of the man is a little too flat in my eyes. But the horse is good.

04-04-2005, 06:07 AM
Nice evolution for your project... congrats for the horse, it seem very well... I'm waiting your work on the conquistador's face. And don't forget that we imagine his face, long fine and angular as a very proud Spanish :bounce:

04-04-2005, 09:51 AM (

... firts steps for the modelisation of the Priest's helmet ...

04-04-2005, 01:43 PM (

... next step of modeling the helmet ...

04-04-2005, 01:49 PM
@crapple : thanks, the body is not finished at all ... miss many muscles in the centre part of the body ... actually focus on the top of the character ...
@Lemog: Not shure it will look like a spanish man ... but a fat vicious man certainly ;)

04-04-2005, 10:27 PM
Good work! I love the cap. Just a notice: your hand are too small and too flat. Good luck!

04-05-2005, 05:27 AM
I agree with Ke V2 for the hands... and for the helmet, no crits... but I don't want the same to walk in the street :scream: hihi... good continuation !

04-05-2005, 06:06 AM
hey there ... i agree about the hands.. and for some reason the helmet looks too big for his head.. other then great model.. really great design for the helmet too.. great stuff

04-05-2005, 09:31 AM
@Ke V2,Lemog : Thanks, you are right i'll correct that ... (not in the next capture as it is already done but in the following)
@ Neeno : Thanks, i've made the helmet a little smaller to see if it's better ...

04-05-2005, 09:34 AM (

... i've started the modelisation of the bony of the priest ... i need to round mode the muscles but it's just the beginning ...

04-05-2005, 10:12 AM
Effectively, the body start well... just the buttocks should be increased :bounce:

04-05-2005, 10:47 AM
I'm not fan fo the proportion of the body but is it a good job !!

fellicitation ;)

04-05-2005, 11:05 AM
The body is very good:thumbsup: , add him clothes. This picture will be great!:buttrock:

04-05-2005, 01:00 PM
lookin better dude.. keep it up

04-06-2005, 06:45 AM
Looking really nice. Remember that the Incas were really short people (1.5, 1.6 max) but as you show it really well, they were very fit.

Hey, let me know how you go with your fat guy, I just stated Sancho himself, who is fat too. You gonna put a beard on the man?

Keep it up, improving a lot.

04-06-2005, 07:35 AM (

... modified the hands to be less flat ...

04-06-2005, 08:06 AM
@Lemog: ... i've changed the hands ... next will be for the buttocks ... Thanks for the comments ... sometimes when you spend many time on an object it's difficult to see which part are wrong ;)

@pitiwazou : ... Thanks ...euh about the proportions ... i took as references my beautiful body (;) ) so according to you i think must stop beer ... just a little one  ...

@aleinlatin: Well both men will be certainly little (an athletic one and a fat man for contrast) ... i'm not sure of the true of the size but i won't make giants nor Pigmee ... for the beard i'll make some tries as i don't want the beard to hide the expression of this face ... maybe a thin beard ...

@Neeno: Thanks

@SaintT: Thanks, clothes will be the next addition to the character after a correct the shape of the character ...

04-06-2005, 08:45 AM
This is not a monster!!

I like it!

Good way!!Keep on!

But interesting for me the modelling combinate the big details with small details..Hm..
my servant:

04-06-2005, 02:35 PM (

... a wire version of my Inca Priest almost finish ... before modeling the clothes ...

04-06-2005, 02:38 PM (

... the same version smooth ...

04-07-2005, 05:22 AM
What to say ? very good progress for the Inca Fred
Just one remark, if we compares with his total musculature, the thighs are still a little thin, but this is not so disturbing, especially which he will have some clothes... good job gars :bounce:

04-07-2005, 06:00 AM (

... a little update for the conquistador's head... i've added the ears now i'll see for proportions and details ...

04-07-2005, 06:04 AM (

... after the wire now the smooth version ...

04-07-2005, 06:08 AM
Gall Attila : Thanks, good luck with your project too
Lemog: Thanks, it's better for me to know all what i must change BEFORE i combine the left part and the right part and make texture

04-07-2005, 02:30 PM (

... making some tries for the conquistador's head ...

04-07-2005, 02:33 PM (

... another view smoothed ...

04-08-2005, 05:14 AM
Hey... you work like a fool mate... so fast
Just one remark for the conquistador's face... I find that the nose don't make very spanish...
we more easily imagines a conquistador with a fine face, longiligne and a little bit angular... bt if it's your choice... go man...

Je vais louper ton avancée pendant 1 semaine, alors good courage à toi pendant ce temps, see you soon Fred :wavey:

04-08-2005, 07:25 AM (

... still playing with vertex to modify the shape of my master's head ...

04-08-2005, 07:30 AM
@Lemog : you're right as usual for the nose ... i thought somethink was wrong in my face, read again your post ... change the nose ... and now i think it look better ... many thanks

04-08-2005, 05:20 PM (

... i've made a little test to see if i put a beard or not (shaders and helmet are not definitive at all, just here for the test) ...

04-09-2005, 02:49 AM
very good model and I wish you the best of luck.. keep rocking!!! and keep the beard

handsonfire 3d master and severant

04-09-2005, 10:24 AM
ça commence à être bien sympa par ici :)

Bonne suite ;)

04-09-2005, 11:43 AM
Nice start, prefer the man with the beard too. Bonne chance

04-12-2005, 02:24 AM
Dude! Very nice modelling. Geez, wish I could model so quickly. I've been stuck on Sancho's face for a bit trying to get the fat cheeks happening.

With your beard, I think that it is coming along well. remember that you have to dirty it up heaps as the Spaniards of the time were quite dirty. it can come to be a very nice contrast between the Inca (golden skinned and clean, no hair, etc) and the Spaniard (fat, slobbery, dirty and pale).

Great stuff man!!!

04-13-2005, 11:35 AM
Good work Fred. I like the design of your characters

04-17-2005, 06:55 AM (

@hands0nfire: Thanks !
@aleinlatin: Thanks, i keep an eye on your job too !
@bouledpue: Thanks  ... tu participes pas ?
@Elendil le Grand: Merci !
@3DForEverything: Thanks, i'll definitively keep the beard ...

04-18-2005, 06:08 AM
Congratulations Fred... I like a lot his face... really a good design for a conquistador... amacié, les paumettes saillantes, de la barbe... c'est le look adéquate... Continue like that... that's really come interesting :bounce:

04-18-2005, 07:47 AM
It's a good up :)

Good work

04-27-2005, 05:29 AM

04-29-2005, 12:00 AM
I can only say WOW! :applause:
Your progress has been great. Obviously been checking a lot of National Geographics as your models for the Maya and Inca people and their belonging are quite accurate, trust me, I come from those areas and always have loved to pay lot of attention of them.

You know the chest plate right under his chin? Check this out for some ideas. ( Sorry for no english, but Spanish I think you can understand well enough.

04-29-2005, 04:23 AM
Thanks for the link AleinLatin... very interesting, that's remain me my travel in Mexico...

04-29-2005, 09:02 AM
@aleinlatin: thanks for the link  ... i must say that i had problems to find good images references and it will help me to be not very far from reality ! But i think i won't have enough time to do all what i want ... i think i now nead a link to make days longer (maybe 50 hours per day would be fine ;) )

@Lemog : Thanks, i don't think i'll put as many details as i wanted because i need more time and it would be finish only for christmas ;)

05-06-2005, 01:59 PM
You don't need to put much details if your ship is not view in close-up... that's certainly sufficient... just good textures and run buddy...

... making some tests to integrate the foreground vegetation ...

05-11-2005, 12:26 PM
Boudiou... ça avance plutôt bien mec... Very beautiful your vegetation mate...

And now, I try it in english just for smile :
Only one element disturb me in your scene, the sun... with two points to describe :
- the star effect make me feel to an optical camera distortion... I think that will be better to have something more diffuse...
- the sun appear for me a little bit too much positionned at the top of the pyramid... certainly better if you move it more low... just behind the pyramid... certainly a good effect...

Courage, c'est la dernière ligne droite... :bounce:

05-15-2005, 01:37 PM
Thanks Lemog for comments i'll try to make some modifications

05-15-2005, 01:39 PM (

05-15-2005, 01:42 PM (

05-16-2005, 04:33 AM
Yep... good update man... the sun is really better... just remain the position... but it's certainly a real choice to place it exactly in the middle... ça bosse fort ici... faut pas laisser refroidir alors :scream:
Vas-y Fred

05-16-2005, 06:13 AM
... thanks Lemog  ... for the sun i'll see after i've finished my master as my biggest worry is that my render fails very often due to the big size and my computer ... i must make between 3 and 4 render before one is finish (many problems with the post effects of the software !) ... and moreover tomorrow i can't work on the project so i'll try to finish before the deadline !

I've too some problems with the post effects in the full res of my pic... the only one solution for me was to render these effects alone... and composite them after in Photoshop... certainly due to the low power of my computer...
I cross my fingers for you Fred :buttrock:

C vraiment sympa :)

I hope you can take time to finish your very beautiful and interesting piece... then... it's not finish but anyway, congratulation Frédéric... you can be proud

Hey Frederic,
I like the addition of the conquistador to your image:thumbsup: , tells more of a story to your image. I think the tallship is a little off perspective or size wise though. Good job on this and good luck.
