Im in. First time competing in one of these challenges

Not necessarily going for hard science but i want a realistic feel to it. Ill probably sacrifice some reality for entertainment value


-establishing shot of launch area
-onboard camera of boosters firing up
-Full shot of rockets inital take off
-Long shot of rocket climbing into the air
-onboard camera, boosters break off

we'll see how far I get, thats all for now

The scanlines are part of the look im going for. Sort of a remote camera, when the cloud hits the camera Ill have artifacting and then static before switching to the next shot

This is looking great. I really like the look of the smoke, and the lighting flare. I'm not sure about the scanlines, but that's probably just me. :shrug:

The pics look fine to me. Very good smoke by the way. Is that afterburn you are using or something else?

The smoke is just one big fluid container. Done in Maya

lookin good, i especially like the far off smoke shot! Could you explain how you did it in fluids. I'm using maya and would like to learn how to get the results that you have been able to create.

If you go to the fluid effects menu and under fluid examples bring out the example. Thats what i started with. Its a lot of trial and error from there. Fluids can be a bitch.

I use them on a daily basis at work and they almost never do what i want them to so dont kill yourself over it.

The long shot of the rocket is mostly compositing work. The main smoke cloud is just ripped from a still image and i added a distortion to it to keep it moving. The smoke trail is done using the afterburn script for maya

oh ok, ill have to fool around with it. Never used fluids before. Do you know of any good learning sources for fluids? Thx alot!

omg, that looked incredible....but the smoke color is not consistent in both shots, but the camera is unbelievably amazing, omg is it ever good...:drool:

Your job is quite well but it needs more speed in your smoke and the shuttle looks also slow when it takes off. And one more thing.
In the last scene, why don't you try to put the shake on your camera instead of your shuttle? That should look better.

I couldn't agree more maboroshi...

Apoc... it looks like the camera is about to fall off, its so mounted to the craft, it should move at all... and the paralaxing (spelling?) on the earth in comparison to the craft is just too much... I would recommend just putting all camera shake in post, and all on one layer....

But dude, kickin' ass thus far! Keep it up man!
