View Full Version : Rays cutting a surface !!

03 March 2005, 06:12 AM
Hi All

I was wathching Blade yesterday and wondered how they have made those light rays come through the bodies of those Vampires when they were hit by the sword!
Rays cutting a surface is what i'm looking for

I'm trying to do this with particles in combustion and the process is still on.....

I would like to have some ideas on this issue wether it is possible in combustion or anywhere else?
Moreover pls enlighten me on how this effect was done if one knows about it....

Warm Regards

not sure about the rays, but some of the effects are made with "Thinking Particles" ( if it can help you

I"m not sure how much you can do wtihout buying some sort of a light ray volumetric plugin

here is a tutorial on doing light rays without a plugin in combustion

here is some info on the particle system used

I'm guessing you could do limited rays in combustion, but would need a more complex solution if say the camera moved a lot or if the vamps emitting the light moved around. you would need some IMAGE data. there are ways to fake this with blurs and such, or using a volumetric renderer based off the particles themselves.

many ways to get to the same effect

i'm thinking of creating the ray texture in photoshop, map it on some cones or planes in 3ds max(RPF?) and then use those layers in combustion to give the effect..if the character is moving i can track those layres may be..just thought of....i'll try this tonight...
any other ideas???

In a good 99.9% of the cases, such "rays" are done with something akin to Trapcode's "shine" (, a wholly 2D post effect.

Once you seen, and used "shine", you see it everywhere. Everywhere. It gets almost as annoying as the photoshop lensflare (but not quite :) )

Nice try, but that's real photos and it's practical colored starspots through smoke. Sorry. :)
