View Full Version : Sketcher - new tool for collaborative 2D art

02 February 2005, 05:56 PM

I'm the creator and lead programmer of the Sketcher project (, an open source (freeware) program for collaborating on images while taking part in chat. In ways it's similar to the network functionality in older versions of openCanvas, except that this is client/server-based, it's all written in Java and the client is an applet (it runs in web browsers).

I'm here to announce that the system can be downloaded here ( It's in development, but it's now useable enough that we're using it over at Artgrounds (, an art hosting site I recently started (free registration, and even a free webmail account if you want it).

So, I guess that's all I wanted to tell you guys.

Open Canvas version 1 is the best online collab art program I've ever seen or used. Simple, yet powerful, with great brushes and layer system. You can specify how many layers each person gets to use in a collab session. You can also record the entire session and play it back and let other people watch the whole session. It also supports tablets.

I've taught some art lessons online using it, and it's very effective when you use it in combination with a realtime voice program. Open Canvas has a chat window for you to type in as well, but using a voice program is much more convenient.
