I did this little step by step for the daily sketch portrait thread and thought I could share it so anyone else would be able to see the process. All in all it took an hour and it's not exact to her face, but hopefully you'll know who she is. (Zhang something, I forget) Anyhow, here it is folks!

How did you paint that soft white (like you see on her right cheek)? I know there are different ways to achieve that but im asking it you. I like to improve on my speed significantly.

Cool. Pretty good likeness. One of my favourite actresses :D I think her first name's Ziyi or something.

Jannis--For the light side of her face, I first layed in all of my colors with a regular brush, and then I used the smudge tool to blend them together. It makes it easier to mix colors quickly. Play around with it and see how you can use different brushes to make different strokes.

If you are talking about the soft cool areas on the other cheek, what I did was I layed in a general skin tone and then I took a color similar to it, but a little lighter and less saturated. It's important to keep them close in value for that subtle effect.

I hope this helps!

Nice technique; I haven't gotten as good as you are at digital painting (1 hour? Cripes! ), so things like this are fascinating to me.

i know its not as good as Nathaniels. She doesnt even look like the actress. But I didnt mean to have a proportion or a portrait study. All i wanted to find out is to paint light very fast and in a convincing way. The smudge really did gave me more "freedom" than with using brushes on low opacity or flow.

Master strokes Mr. West !
my critiques..hope u dont mind..the cavity of the nose is looking too black, and the eye in the shadow area is looking hard 'coz of dark colour and the white patch on the forehead is looking like lil bit misplace or out of shape...just my opinion, but ur work is awesome, just going through ur site. mindblowing work !!! thanx a lot for sharing ur work with all of us ! looking forward for more :)

take care

Nice tut :), Jannis you could also chck Enayla's homepage. It's got a page with ideas about skincolor as well. She does it just a lil bit different, but she also mixes colors with smudging, if I recall correctly...
