Im working on a music video, its an Enya Only Time type video and i need rain falling and splashes. In one scene there is a close up of a vioal and cello and id like to have the rain splash upon hitting the insrtument. In the other scenes the rian is falling and the shot is kinda far back. Its got to look as realistic as possible.

What sort of software are you using? 2d? 3d? if you want the most realism a combination of both is going to be required, especially for the viola splashes which will probably need to be particle driven, maybe even simulated fluid like RealFlow if you want perfection. Give us more info about what you want, and show us your first experiments so we can make suggestions.

Mostly what i need a tutorial on how to create rain in either MAYA 6 or 3ds Max. What i am trying to do is is create a music video, its based off the song Only Time by enya. The whole video is going to be shot on a stage and the effects of the four seasons edited in in post production. One of my shots is a close up on a viola and its raining and i need the rain to splash on the viola i think the term is "Hero Splah". if any one can help it would be really great.

I know that Blue Beta has a material for doing rain drop waves on a surface. you can find the plugin here http://www.maxplugins.de (http://www.maxplugins.de/) just search under "rain" When your particles hit the surface it creates a droplet effect.
if you have MAX 7 with PS in it, you can program your own rain particles pretty easy. they can even have splashes and drips.
there are a ton of tutorials on these things you can buy
also search here on CGtalk, here is a thread on RAIN in MAYA
I'm sure if you just search the word ran under the MAX or MAYA software forums you will find a ton of resources.

Uh, why don't you just shoot practical instead of trying to create this in the computer? It'll be easier and quicker. You are in the Compositing and Visual Effects forum, after all.
