View Full Version : CgTalk Daily Sketch 262:THE FUNDAMENTALS 002: Color Theory: Black & Blue

02 February 2005, 01:59 PM

And for those who want to do an experiment and have the time:

Quote from ZEM posting:

"Do the same Illustration (twice) with 2 different color schemes that change the meaning, or mood of the piece."
And if you dont have the time, just do a piece that uses the Color Theory of make an impact on the viewer.

Welcome to ART Fundamentals week at the Daily Sketch forum.
The idea is to go back and practice core skills for one week.

Check out these links below for reference purposes:

Also have you guys noticed that none of the WB characters with speech impediments
go the 'upgrade'?

The rules....

Welcome to the cgtalk sketch group.

We will try to post one of these topics once a day for your enjoyment.

These are the rules:
* Post only your FINAL piece on this thread, based on the topic on the thread.
* 640 x 480 / 480 x 640 OR 800 x 600 /600 x 800
* They can be done on any medium.
* If you wish, you can add a brief text description about your piece.
* Only original compositions. No "tributes" or plagiarizing.
* The topics will be posted every day between 10:00 - 12:00 am US EST.
* The artist also has to post total length of time it took (Thanks Clanger for the idea) and program used.
* Only final pieces can be posted on the thread. They must have been done AFTER the topic has been announced.
* Any piece caught breaking the rules will be taken off the thread.
* The topics will be picked at random from the list on this thread
(The author will be given credit). So guys keep them coming.
*You can add multiple entries, but please dont post WIP (Unless you intend to update them). NEW RULE!

1hr, painter, and photoshop. I think I'd probly fail any color wheel assignment. I don't see any references that say you can use a red/blue theme, but I did it anyway, so maybe you all can learn from my mistake.

and the other one... hope you like it

02 February 2005, 09:24 PM

I used both the Fundamentals 001 and Fundamentals 002 on this one. :)

I'm really horrible with colors. Forgot to say that it took about an hour.

02 February 2005, 09:56 PM
Hey, I'm new here but thought it sounded like a great place to practice and learn.
I decided to do it the cheap way and just adjust the colors for the second image.
Anyway, 20min for both using photoshop and wacom.
...and the blue & black one.

White Rabbit
02 February 2005, 10:11 PM
Around one hour for the color pic, then 20 minutes on the Black and Blue version (Photoshop, wacom)
EDIT: sorry the images are so big, wasn't careful about it - should I make'em smaller?

02 February 2005, 11:03 PM
PS 6.1
~30 minutes

I did a four up, 4 difrent colors :D

02 February 2005, 11:31 PM
Sorry about this, I know it's stupid :)

Not much inspiration lately... due to lack of sleep...
btw smurfs are cool, heheh...

02 February 2005, 11:35 PM
Lol nice evil smurf :)

This honestly looked better before I shrank it. It took a lot of the detail out :/ thats my excuse anyway ;)

02 February 2005, 11:43 PM
Good topic!

I must say I enjoyed this one...

You'd best behave or The girls in 'black and blue' will have to take down your particulars...

2 hours in Photoshop and my nice lovely Wacom which I will never moan about again...

Nice sketchs guys!

I think I'm finally starting to get the feel and idea of using color in digital form. Though I have a long way to go I'm really happy with the results.

EDIT: The img tag placed a link. Hope it works now.

02 February 2005, 12:17 AM
Cool stuff peeps. (

30 min - painter.

02 February 2005, 12:22 AM
some really good entries!!!

Art2 - awesome - longtime I saw some smurfs

The Ton - she is something

Hmm... while the thread is growing I kinda understand what's cooking

I used only one brush with fore/background jitter fade from black to blue and
some other brush presets - it took me about 40 min just to get the brush
to look the way I wanted then paint it took about 1 hours in PS - wacom

02 February 2005, 12:36 AM
Blue and Black, Black and Blue...

I initially thought of painting some one thrashed up, but I still expect to see that. Kind of wierd working with just a couple of the darkest colors... So I cheated. All apologies. Here is the first one just wanted to use a bunch of warm colors (probably should have established some better cool colors).

And here is the Blue and Black one, although, like I said, I cheated,

30 Minutes, Painter and Photoshop.

02 February 2005, 12:44 AM
Inspired by the great, great, animation-featurefilm "les triplettes de belleville"

02 February 2005, 01:22 AM
Well, this started as an experiment to see how the blue figure might look different on one side against an analogous color and on the other side against a complimentary color.
But it turned into more of a painting exercise for me than anything else. I like how it's coming along. I just don't have time to finish it right now. I'd like to try to find time to finish it.
Photoshop7 - Wacom - about 2 hours so far.

02 February 2005, 01:39 AM
back again after a computer crash, and so many good sketches to oogle at.. gonna try catching up lol great work everyone! (
practice, practice, practice..
Photoshop 7, sketched while in mirc chat half hour or 45 mins-ish

02 February 2005, 01:44 AM
Hmmm.... funny... i gues I am continueing the fad of blue woman on this thread....

Anyways, I decided to leave this in it's sketchy state for now...maybe I'll go back and do something more with it...I dunno know... half of art is knowing when to quit
Photoshop cs and wacom ...uh about an hour

02 February 2005, 01:48 AM
Hey everyone!

I wanted to focus on the warm and cool relationship of of using blue white and black and this is what I came up with. Photoshop and 30-40 minutes or so. It's not easy to get the feeling of different color by playing with temperature but it was an interesting process. Great work everyone!

02 February 2005, 02:08 AM
ps 1hr

Billie Holiday - the great blues singer, who was was both very black, and very blue.

sorry about the (non) likeness hehe

02 February 2005, 03:24 AM
HOLY MOLY there are some AWESOME sketches on this one!

Extra strength thumbs up to Ton, daw, JVaughn, Silverwyvern, Crazy3dMan, deaderthanred!!

My mouth is hanging open in AWE! WOW!

02 February 2005, 03:25 AM
Hello everybody!

I haven't been able to sketch lately, but I've been watching! great work.

Anyway here's mine for today (a little late...)
Black and blue, sound like something underwater to me. I used a complementary color scheme to make contrast and atract the attention of the eye.
I think that there should be something in the lower right corner to help the composition , but oh well. I've been trying to work faster and more "sketchy".

Used underwater photos as reference as well as anatomy references.

Pencil sketch, wacom, Photoshop about two and a half hours in total. Hope you like it!!

Robertt: Nice, full of energy!

Alex Worthy: the second link posted by Roberto has a tetradic color scheme which inculdes blue and red. Only their complementary colors are there as well. Anyway yours looks just fine to me!

Daw: Pretty funky! I like it!

jannis: Love thar movie too

crazy3dman: looking forward to seeing it finished, interesting experiment

deaderthanred: looks very soft and pleasing

Nathaniel West: those solid colors look brilliant together

gordonm: Your interpretation cracked me up. Nice sketch!

02 February 2005, 03:28 AM
Thank you robinayles. That's very nice of you to say. :)

02 February 2005, 03:54 AM
Wow so much terrific work. I have enjoyed looking at it all!

I just got some hardcore input here at home - the verdict: my likeness of Billie Holiday sucks -

oh well - better luck next time

02 February 2005, 11:43 AM
Sweet! I go away for a couple of months and when I come back everyones a bleeding superb artist. I'm almost glad I don't have the time to make something, I would most cetainly be ashamed.
Keep it up people! If there was such a thing as a Daily Sketch Book, I'm guessing some of the posts in this thread would make it to the pages.

Great work everyone! (unless you didn't get that. :) )

around 1.5h, no smurfs this time ;)

Edit: added second image. Sorry for the size guys ...

Nice work guys!

02 February 2005, 06:17 PM
Okay, ended up playing around a lot. They turned out looking so freaky when I finally fixed the eyes, just very uncomfortable. I first tried to fix it then decided to leave it... it sort of lends a certain something to the picture even if it wasn't intended. I played with red and blue in photoshop. The first one, the red image, took about forty minutes and the recolouring to blue took ten.

Awesome work everyone, by the way, this thread is turning out really impressive. I'm sorry I'm so late, I really haven't felt very inspired this week :/

02 February 2005, 07:06 PM
I feel realy stupid posting this after seeing all these great work of art.
Here is mine,i hope you like it:

I feel realy stupid posting this after seeing all these great work of art.
Here is mine,i hope you like it:

pnyx - please don't feel stupid. Just keep posting. I like your image. Nice study. After all, it is the Daily Sketch group, not the Daily Finished Masterpiece group. :) Even if there are some masterpieces posted here occasionally.

Edit: And actually, I think yours is one of the best examples here of creating 2 very different moods by simply changing colors.

02 February 2005, 08:10 PM

pnyx: I agree with crazy 3dman, the mood is completely different in your pictures. Good job.
Also, I understand how you can feel, because sometimes is really like: Am I playing on the fifth division? O_o ... BUT... keep posting, and keep drawing (daily if you can) because despite of those "I canŽt draw" moments youŽll learn a lot by drawing and looking (I can tell, I have).
This is also a great DSG, so... stay tuned!

I have just realized thereŽs no post coming from me without this:  hehheh

02 February 2005, 08:37 PM
Thanks for the encouragement you two. I think i really have to paint more and i ll try :)

Gordon and Element5 - cool new Avatars folks!

Super great thread everyone!

Welcome back, Vitriolic! I missed drawing you for the Avatar War.

Hey Zem - good to see you too. Please post whatever you draw and don't feel ashamed. Its the only way to practice and get good feedback and tips. Besides I think your work showed tons of improvement from the first of your posts I saw through to your later ones.

Congrats on the job, CodeNothing!

Silverwyvern - hang in there!

02 February 2005, 10:13 PM

Funguspuddle: awesome sketches! I love the style...:)

02 February 2005, 06:07 PM
Thanks White Rabbit! :) I actually made some scribbles and then tried to make something out of them. Learned that technique in second grade. Trying to loosen up my drawing style and get a little faster. I think it's working! :)

03 March 2005, 05:33 AM
Im thinking a vote for Taron333 will suit me, it was interesting and not what i thought i would see when i scrolled down, nice effect.

close second was Xillion because it was a very nicely done and original on the topic of "look heres a picture in red, and ooohhh look now its blue" theme this one seemed to develop
