View Full Version : Girl with the RED Umbrella WIP

02 February 2005, 09:23 AM
Hello all :) This idea came to me the other day, one of two actually, and I decided to make a quick concept sketch. I liked the idea and decided that I would keep working on it after work every evening.

At first I wasn't shure if I wanted to post the WIPs for this image on CGTalk since I have never really done a WIP on this forum before, well except for the CG challenge I entered. I then decided that I would like to hear people's comments on my progress.

Anyway here is the concept sketch I did the other night.

This is some coloring that I did tonight.

I think you should keep the colors kind of washed out, like in your thumbnail. Make it look kind of like thin watercolors on line art.
I really enjoy the composition. Its wonderful.
From looking at your "Flight of Dreams" piece, which looked very english in style, to this which looks very oriental, i think you got some neat range going.

I think her arm looks a bit flimsyinthe sketch. But perhaps paint will erase that sin.

Keep us posted. You are developing an interesting illustrative style. I think its lovely.

I like the washed out colors but we will see how it goes, the images lead me along as I go.
Also I have already shortened the arm some from the original concept sketch, I will see what I can do there :)

Looks gr8 Nemik

Only thing i can spot is that the house in hte distance, in the middle of the painting seems more 'sketchy' and 'rough' compared to the others. Not a big diffrence, but its only thing i can spot

good job!

Yes you are right about that... I have yet to do any work on it...
Thanks :)

Hi Nemik, I don't know about the gold/yellow colour of the umbrella in the foreground. Maybe try some other colours. Also with the orange pants to the right of her in the picture. They seem to draw my eye away from her slightly. The buildings in the distance could be faded a little to give some depth. I'm guessing you'll be adding highlights later as well. I'm liking the work so far. Look forward to seeing more!

Although i'm not a 2D artist my suggestion would be to paint up everything nice and colourful/normal and then desturate everything except the girl and her umbrella.
The impact of the image is the contrast of the girl, just like the "woman in the red dress" from the Matrix.

it seems like her hair is fixed in that shape, it doesnt look like there is any real flow to it.

it looks kinda unnatural in that position i think, maybe try having it straight instead? maybe a lil curl at the end? cause i dont think hair curves like that (i could be wrong, i dont have long hair to check it out)

thanks I will take all that information into consideration.
Thanks again for all the help from everyone :)

Here is the latest have not applied any of the new ideas yet.

Here are some other versions I created I added a little more hair I still have alot of body and motion in the hair cause I wated it to look full and look like it has some movement to it.

I also muted some of the colors I then realized that I could add even more color to the girl :) (

I decided to try a tall cropped version as well
I kind of like it because it closes in more on the subject and brings your eye right to her :) (
