View Full Version : 3 samurai on horseback <------ WIP

02-17-2005, 01:31 PM
Hi y'all,

As many artists, I have a lot of WIPs that are personal projects. These projects always tend to be put on hold (for me anyways...) because of freelance or other paying work.

I figured if I just post my work in progress stuff, it will give me enough extra motivation to start doing more of my own works. And so.. I've chosen to paint one of my favorite drawings "3 Samurai on Horseback."

I hope you'll stay tuned :)

02-17-2005, 08:00 PM
Impressive, very cool and funny, definetly gonna keep an eye out for this one

02-18-2005, 03:36 AM
Very balanced. Many Yin Yang elemetns. Fat guy skinny horse, Skinny guy fat horse. There are fat and skinny elements on either side of the balanced middle. Its very nice. I really enjoy the composition and the character put into the figures.
The one in the middle is ideal then? And the sides are two opposite sides of extreme?

The one in the middle however is less appealing. Perhaps he is a hero. But does he tell good stories? Does he make you laugh?

I find this very charming and am glad you shared it.

Thanks everyone! It feels so great to get some of my own art done after a longgggggg azz day of working for someone else. It helps me relieve the tension and frustrations of the day. Especially today... sigh...

here's some more pics

Another long day. I had a dream this morning that I was at work, except work didn't look like work. It looked like one of those sweat shops in a big warehouse. I was lining up to get my work from a girl behind a counter with bars dividing us. My boss in the dream (wasn't my real boss) was standing on a balcony that over looked everything.

When I went to the front of the line, I see a person whisper into the boss' ear. Next thing I know, he's yelling at me and asks me "Why don't you just QUIT??"
I was very surprised and saddened. I replied "Do you want me to quit? If you want me to quit, then I'll quit."

I guess he didn't like my answer because then he started into an evil laugh and said "Another typical Bobby Chiu answer huh? Fine! GET OUTTA HERE! You're gone!"

He sounded an alarm and I was escorted out of the building.

The alarm was my alarm clock waking me up... time for work. I just thank goodness that it's Friday...

Any dream anaylists out there? lol...

02-19-2005, 05:35 AM
Hmmm, maybe look into some of Hobbes & McCarley's dream theories? Anyway, your coloring is looking great! I love the atmosphere:thumbsup:

02-19-2005, 04:12 PM

Just got to say that I love this peace already! One thing do, The eyes of the caracter in the middle has changed a lot from the sketch, Why? They looked great.
Anyway I am really looking forward to see the finished artwork. (Will be a nice wallpaper :))

02-24-2005, 02:17 PM
ok... my computer has been down for the past few days but now it's up and running again! I had a little time this morning to work on this pic a little more...

Octothreat - Thanks Octothreat. I think it just means that it was time for me to leave work and persue freelance full time. I gave my boss notice on Monday that March 18th will be my last day. Best boss I ever had... but it was just time to go and persue my dreams:)

Swoop - thank you

AbsolutionZero - Thanks. I'm really aiming to get this done by the end of this month. We'll see how it goes.

Cranknus - Thx. I think it's the under painting right now that might be throwing you off a bit. It'll look like the drawing by the end

02-25-2005, 02:39 AM

02-25-2005, 04:24 AM

02-25-2005, 04:30 AM
hrmm, the heads kinda look flat against the horses. they just dont seem to pop out enough, same with the clothing wrinkles...it looks really flat. and the middle horses ears look semi-transparent

i like the new face you put on the middle dude tho:) he looks a lot better now

02-25-2005, 05:15 AM
That new face of his looks fantastic!
excellent work,

Found some time to put in another few hours... http://www.artofbob.com/images/bkup/3samurai_on_horseback_wip10.jpg

02-26-2005, 03:27 AM
this kind of work remember me why i stopped 2D and stayed concentrated on 3D stuff :P
my two cents (i know it's wip but... ) the rear legs of the first and fird horse are a bit too white.. the one in the middle is much more "integrated"... do you see what i mean?
good work keep it up!

02-26-2005, 01:38 PM
pascal blanché - Thank you for your comment :) The legs will be good by the end. Thx for lookin out for me

Woke up at 630am today with painting on the brain. Here's an update

02-27-2005, 12:10 AM
hey bobert, just a few things to say about the piece.

first off, the style is very good, and it possess a crazy balance with the different height and weight distributions of the men and horses.

while it may be intentional, the legs of the first and third man seem akward to me. riding a horse, even if your legs are at a 90 degree angle or so like the first mans are, the toes would be pointing in, not perpendicular to the horses body.

On the man all the way to the right, the knees look to me as if they should be in farther. When your riding a horse, you are trying to hug the horses body with your knees usually.

the last 2 things are that the left sleeve of the middle man (his left), looks to have discontinuous wrinkles on the fore arm area. I'd really like to know what is making his sleeve stick out so much overall if his elbos isn't going out as far as his sleeve ending.

and lastly, the lighting on the first and third men, but it doesnt look like your that far along, so its not an issue yet.

Great work so far, and tell me if i'm off the mark on any of those comments. Hope I helped :)!

02-27-2005, 12:25 AM
InterFacer - Thanks for the c&c! I really like what you've said. The technical aspects of riding a horse wasn't really a concern for me. It's more about fun cartoony physics and design. Hope that helps :)

02-27-2005, 03:02 AM
thanks for everyone that tuned in and left me comments and critiques. It's always nice to hear other people's perspectives. Here's an update after a couple hours later...

02-27-2005, 12:44 PM
went to sleep at 3am... couldn't sleep. Dreaming of horses and samurai... woke up at 630am... had to paint!

02-27-2005, 02:42 PM
Hey bobby, nice progress, especially like the faces.
Are you going to put some more color and paterns on their clothes?
I think it would liven up things a bit.

02-27-2005, 03:21 PM
All of your steps are so clean. Every one of them seemed like a finished picture to me.

Wish i could produce stuff with just sharpness of mind.
Nothing to crit really. Id propably done a slightly less caricature style pic with small dose of realism.

Good pic Bobby!

02-27-2005, 03:24 PM
Art2 - Hey thanks for the c&c! I'll think about it... I wanted the samurais to be tough so I was thinking to leave the fancy patterns out. Thanks for the suggestion tho! I appreciate it :)

Ok... off to subway sketching...

02-27-2005, 05:20 PM
thats commin together nicely now:)

the big guys clothing still looks rather flat, and the skinny guys as well...but the horsies are startin to look shweet:thumbsup:

02-28-2005, 02:01 AM
Hi there-
First of all, loved the original drawing alot, saw it 3 or 4 months ago....loved it....
Your painting seems very skilled. I think it will turn out great.

One thing: I´m not that in to samurai films, so I cant recognize two of the three men. But the one in the middle, I recognized on the original drawing. From "The last samurai"(Starring Tom Cruise). Now, I don´t recognize him anymore....not even a little....And as his face seems very far in progress, it might not get better.....I can´t put my finger on it. But he´s not the same person anymore.......hehe....mainly the eyes are "wrong", I think.....hmmm.....

Well, you´ll probably figure it out.

02-28-2005, 02:41 AM
Hey digital_bobert, it's coming along well! What about adding a little more highlight to the two guys on the outside? Their faces and clothes don't seem to come up as well as the guy in the middle. Maybe that is your intention.

02-28-2005, 09:07 AM
Hi, this is a very nice piece.
The only thing I can think of to critique is the first mans left leg (right leg in our view). It looks a bit thin compared to the other leg. It doesn't have the same curvature to the mid section. So, it kind of looks as if he has broken it or that it sort of penetrates the horses' back.

Otherwise, very good. They look extremely cool, love the heads and the style of the horses.

Take care,

02-28-2005, 02:36 PM
Hey thanks for tuning in guys and thanks for the c&c. it's appreciated!

Here's an update... the faces for the guy on the right and left arent done yet.

Cheers, Bobbyhttp://www.artofbob.com/images/bkup/3samurai_on_horseback_wip15.jpg

02-28-2005, 06:55 PM
ahh crap i thought i was going to be able to see the finished job lol by the way nice drawing and who did you use as reference for the samurais faces, they look very familiar to me.

The horses are funny and how those 2 samurais the skinny one and the fat one are on the wrong horse lol  Keep it up i also would like to know that technique that you use to color.

02-28-2005, 10:42 PM
I so can't wait to see the finished version. :D

03-01-2005, 12:52 AM
Heya Bobby,

I've been watching your progress on this but really didn't have any crit to offer up until this point. It's looking really good and the characters are turning out extremely well. I love how the middle guy has so much depth in his clothing. He's poppin' off the page!

The other two seem more flat in comparison, but I'm guessing they're still WIP.

Anyway, the thing I noticed (and it's bugging me now) ... is that the fat horse is the only one that appears to be harnessed correctly. The other two horses have their 'lead straps' (I don't know what they're called) attached to some sort of belt around their bodies. Despite my limited knowledge of harnessing a horse, I'm pretty sure you can't lead a horse unless these straps are attached at the mouth. Yeah ... it's a cartoon and you're allowed liberties with the design, but this looks really strange to me now that I've noticed it.

Funny it never bothered me before and I've been checking out your progress on this since it was posted as a B&W drawing.

Keep up the good work. Oh, and congrats on getting in the finals for Sketchbook Pro Expose Yourself 2 contest ... again! :D

Funny he does have a point and now it looks weird to me too :bounce:

InAction - thx!

Kirt - Thank you for the observation! It's funny that out of thousands of views of this WIP, you were the only one to point that out! lol... thanks I appreciate it and I'll change it soon. Can't believe I didn't think of that... *embarrassed* hehehe. Cheers!
Oh and yes, the two guys on the side are flat because it's still WIP. I worked on them last nite but was unable to post.. my internet is down on my home computer

CgTalk member - looks odd to me too. it'll be fixed. thanks

03-02-2005, 01:24 PM

Kirt - Thank you for the observation! It's funny that out of thousands of views of this WIP, you were the only one to point that out!I have the critical eye ... it's usually the demise of 90% of my illustrations (I spill things on the other 10%). :D

It's looking good - keep going

The guy on the right doesn't look like he's got hold of the reins too tightly.

It turned out good! Too bad I don't have money to buy the book. :(

03-17-2005, 06:51 AM
One last critique, hopefully this gets to you before you print. I'm a little bothered by the inconsistent lighting on the faces in regards to how you've placed the light.

Right now, from those sun streaks you've put in the image, the light is coming from overhead to the left of the image. Only the middle samurai's facial lighting reflects this, with a subtle darker patch on the lower right of his face. The two other samurai have somewhat generic top down lighting that looks odd when compared to the middle samurai and the direction of the streaks.
