STEP 12 - Finished - 27.02.2005

Made some overall color tweaks and refined the image overall. I hope you like it.

I intend this to be my second submission to Expose 3. I hope I have enough time to finish it...If I don't I'll save it for next year.

I got this idea after walking in the park here in Lisbon. It was a winter morning and noone was there. There was a deep mist in the air and everything looked kind of creepy but at the same time romantic. There were a couple of trees that I immediately associated with hands ready to grab whoever would be passing by. That's when I thought of a small girl who would be playing alone in a big garden, left alone with her own imagination, sort of like Alice in Wonderland. It would be a misty winter morning, and the scene would depict her stooping over a bright flower that grows out of nowhere acting as bait for the twisted old tree (kinda like Old Man Willow from Tolien) full of appetite. You start wondering if the tree really is about to have a feast or if it is all in the girl's imagination.

Well, this is the basic idea, and the title is also just a suggestion...I don't know if I will keep these to the end. Let's see what happens. Comments and ideas are most appreciated.

STEP 5 - Coloring and some refining

great work, keep it up!

STEP 5 - Coloring

Not much to say. I'm making some small modifications here and there, to both form and color. I am more or less pleased with the overall balance of the image, but many things can still change.

02 February 2005, 12:13 AM
Maybe a little late, but if it's possible I would have the tree bend over the child (is it a child?) to emphasise like it's about to grab, know what I mean.

Looking great by the way

02 February 2005, 11:49 AM
Yo N.D.!What do you think if the flower you talked about grew out of a root of the tree? It would become more obvious that it was a bait put there by the tree itself. I like the shape of the tree!

02 February 2005, 12:09 PM
STEP 6 - Coloring (enhancing colors, adjusting contrast)

Adjusted some of the colors giving a more saturated brownish look and tweaked some of the contrast. I hope it isn't getting too dark. Comments appreciated

Great concept! Some things for you to consider. 1. curving one or both of the roots around the girl more as if they were to clutch her. 2. Adding more of an s-shape to the tree to give tension. 3. Question the placement of the housemaybe a little more to the left? 4. Have a bird fleeing her nest by the sudden movement. just some thoughts. I'm really looking foreward to seeing this finished. Good luck!

Great work, I love it, I wish you luck finishing it soon!:applause:

STEP 7 - Coloring small update - Update 16-02-2005

Small update and added a crow...or something like it. But I don't know if it works yet.

02 February 2005, 12:39 AM
Wow, I love the simbolism of your image...

But don't you think that the branches should grow thinner?

02 February 2005, 12:48 AM
STEP 8 - Some corrections to the tree and house

Reduced the much to thick branches of the trees and added twigs. The house also got an overhaul to look more gothic and menacing. The girl is just a blur at the moment and still needs a lot of definition.

02 February 2005, 01:35 AM
She is so dead. Hope shes got some weed out.

02 February 2005, 01:51 AM
I really like that. great corrections. The Goth house and multple twigs make it look real nice!

STEP 9 - Going back - 2005.02.20

I went back a bit on the process and gathered the best elements of the previous steps and implement them in this final one. I hope it is working.

02 February 2005, 10:02 AM
whoa,i love the mood ..the progress is good :)

02 February 2005, 07:40 AM
STEP 9 - Going back - 2005.02.21

Proceeding. I detailed the girl a bit more. I probably won't have time to finish this for Expose 3...but I will try.

02 February 2005, 11:31 PM
STEP 9 - More detailing - 21.02.2005

More detailing...I think I'm on the verge of giving up. Somehow I don't really like what I am doing. Let's see what happens.

02 February 2005, 01:37 AM
Ahhhh don't be a quitter! keep going! I like how it's getting tightened up. I would say, keep saturating the colors as the get closer to the viewer. It's a really good and I like how your questioning things. I would stick with it.

02 February 2005, 03:22 AM
i like the piece before the latest one..prefer the triangular roof on the buildings at distance..step #8 was a good one too:)

02 February 2005, 08:13 AM
I would take the crow off, I think the tree would look better with some kind of motion, or something to show that it's a hand that is suppose to be grabbing.

The crow makes it looks very motionless...

Just my 2 cents.

STEP 10 - More detailing - 23.02.2005

Flipped the canvas to give more relevance to the tree. I created a couple of custom brushes and an image hose to create the vegetation. Everything was further detailed.

02 February 2005, 02:49 PM
Great Job so far!

02 February 2005, 12:35 AM
STEP 10 - Starting to finish things up - 24.02.2005

I am getting to the phase where the detailing is starting to look finished (at least to me). I still don't know if I should detail the sky with clouds (most probable) or if there should be a thick haze in the air obscuring the sky and almost hiding the house/castle.

02 February 2005, 12:40 AM
i think the clouds would look nice, but then a sucker for nice clouds:D

whichever you chose do it quick, entry date is racing up close:) this is lookin amazing man keep it up

02 February 2005, 12:16 PM
i like to see the process, good job

02 February 2005, 11:47 PM
STEP 10 - Detailing - 24.02.2005

Just detailing. Added some rocks to add some variability.

02 February 2005, 01:27 AM
It's getting really impressive. I really like how the piece is tightening up!

I'd stick a skull, and some other assorted bones tucked in the bushes behind the tree, real subtle like.

02 February 2005, 02:51 AM
This piece is starting to look awesome man!

I really like how those roots are going up like tentacles ready to grab the girl, it really gets that feel you were looking for.

Good luck finishing the piece, I hope you will finish it in time

02 February 2005, 06:24 AM
Thanks for the comments guys.

Alex, the idea of the skulls is GREAT! I'll definitely implement that. Thanks. I just hope they will be recognizable.

STEP 11 - Almost Done - 26.02.2005

Changed some background elements specially behind the tree. Added a mountain way in the back to add more depth. The house/castle/whatever still needs detailing. Added the skulls behind the tree (Thanks Alex!). I really want to make them detectable only at close inspection. I plan on finishing this tomorrow.

ohh, the bones are nice, but I love the spiderwebs more. really helps with the creepy factor.

02 February 2005, 10:43 PM
maybe try some decaying plants round back also? i dont know..that might be taking it a bit far also

umm...another detail you might wanna look at is moss on the tree, and maybe have hte building in the background crumbling down? or broken down anyways, like all its enhabitants have left

ie) creeping vines growing on the walls, broken walls/windows, and other signs of bad repair

STEP 12 - Finished - 27.02.2005

Made some overall color tweaks and refined the image overall. I hope you like it.

Andreas -

Glad you got to finihs this before the final deadline for Expose. I like how it turned out. The warm colors look great, I like your treatment of warm light (As I did for the Grand Space Opera pic as well.) And the vegetation brushes you made are really wonderful. Nice job, and lots of luck!
