"Having inspired a generation of filmmakers, including George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, Harryhausen, 84, is having a revival.

A DVD out today, Ray Harryhausen: The Early Years Collection (Sparkhill, $29.95), is a retrospective of the animator's lesser-known works, including nursery rhymes and fairy tales that he produced from 1935 to 1953. Other rarities include instructional videos for the Army, tests for potential projects such as War of the Worlds and even an ad for Lucky Strike cigarettes. "

I managed to attend a presentation of this DVD in San Rafael. Ray Harryhausen was in attendance and it was a pleasure to see his early work and hear his perspective on things.

I was amazed at how sophisticated he was as an animator at the age of 18 or so. It was impressive to see what he had accomplished and figured out on his own, without any peers or books or online forums to consult.
