Title: Davinci's Butterfly
Name: Balázs Pápay
Country: Hungary
Software: 3ds max, Photoshop, VRay

Hello there,

This scene was made for a contest named "Mechanical Insect". I got an idea to create a new scale-model from a concept based on Leonardo’s research and here is the story:

In the fifteenth century, the wish to fly like the birds forced Leonardo to design flying machines. He has a lot of notebooks containing 7000 pages where we can find some drafts with his imagination about those… But we never ever find out about what his first model was. Maybe he built one, or not; it would be a secret forever. But now let me present to you my mysterious butterfly, which may have been his first one…

The model was created in 3dsMAX, polygonal modeling, rendered with Vray. All the textures in Photoshop.

Hope you like it.

01 January 2005, 11:36 PM
Just fantabulous! Love the subject and I love the lighting. Nice detail on the sowed wing. Very good job "Leo". I'm a little bit distracted by the empty table in the upper right, though. I want something to be there.

Cool idea and a great finish! The only thing I dislike is the background you can actually see in the top right corner - wooden table or something... But other than that = superb. from me man

02 February 2005, 07:39 AM
I wish, Leonardo da Vinci could see this!!

The contest was in Hungary more than 1 year ago hosted by Design21 magazine.

And the topic was about "Mechanical Insect" design - presented in its "functional" environment.

realmente te feliccito esta exelente esa scena!!! saludos desde Caracas Venezuela

02 February 2005, 10:12 PM
Great modelling work for this creation, i'm impressed by the details of the model. One excellent work:thumbsup: .

02 February 2005, 10:16 PM
Excellent detail throughout - one humble criticism would be of the broken pencil, wouldn't it be more jaggedy with long slender splinters. The fragments look like ceramic fragments. :)

02 February 2005, 10:44 PM
Fantastic, just wonderful. Technically this piece is awesome but the subject is the best part. It has so much style and character that the mind makes up a story after just a single glance. I really can't applaud your concept any more!

02 February 2005, 11:21 PM
Exquisite! I love this. Is this really based on one of his drawings?
I think yours is the best entry in that link. There might be more detailed models, but yours is a completely worked out scene. Really nice.

As far as the broken pencil, I doubt if there were pencils in Leonardo's time. Pieces of graphite, lead, copper and silver were bound by hand in some sort of holder and used for fine line drawing. as long as we're getting technical, Chikega:D

Many thanks for your reply and you critic!

Only the style from Leonardo but the concept and the story is mine. I do not think so if he had a model like this or who knows ? As I told you it was made for a contest…
Leonardo worked with red chalk and I tired to modeling that but you are right maybe the 6 sided shape was not too smart idea.

02 February 2005, 09:23 AM
I like it..where can I buy it?? you

02 February 2005, 09:57 AM

Amazing Work!

02 February 2005, 01:43 AM
Leonardo DaVinci was one of those rare visionaries who saw hundreds of years into the future with his ideas.

Even choosing his work or ideas as a basis for doing something in CG deserves some merit.

The image you posted is beautifully detail-oriented.

02 February 2005, 02:56 PM
Great job, I like it!

02 February 2005, 11:24 PM

Congrats on winning the competition.
02 February 2005, 03:59 PM
The model/texture is really nice. The very idea of the work is very cool as well but the thing that holds me in this image is your color and light.

02 February 2005, 10:49 AM
great work!!
why did you make the textures in photoshop. would it be possible to do so inside MAX?

02 February 2005, 02:47 PM
Congratulations to your work, i like it very much, it deserved the first place on the contest. I like your home page, maybe you shold add the link next time to one of your new work.
Így tovább! :applause:

02 February 2005, 08:32 AM

So many things to love about this!

I absolutely love the concept!!

I love that you were curious enuf to research it and wonder how he got there or started on that train of thought.

I love that you were so enamoured by the idea you turned it into a work of art.

I love it even more that your tribute to the man of many talents, so closely resembles his work, that it could be, had he lived our times created such a machine on his computer to dazzle us and make us desire to create or build our own flying machine.

Thank you for this piece......I am grateful to cgtalk for this latest announcement of winners or I might have missed this great celebration of genious!!

02 February 2005, 08:39 AM

Excellent lighting and color gamma!

02 February 2005, 09:14 AM
that's amazing!

02 February 2005, 12:51 PM
BGX, I have a question for you. But first let me say that this is for sure one of the most impressive and detailed CG artworks I have ever seen, to say the least.

I am presently doing my 1st UVs editing work for a human body. I am using max7, and although I've been told max7 has the easiest and most comprehensive UV editing tools I can't wait to be done with this phase :( But then when I see your work, WOW! I can't help but think about the UVs editing! So with this in mind, would you mind saying how long it took you to UV map it?
And maybe, for how long have you been UV mapping too.

Thanks in advance BGX :)

02 February 2005, 06:36 PM
That´s is the most fascinated idea that I saw today in CG talk.

Iluminate idea.

02 February 2005, 08:49 PM
