Here's a preview for my character. She's going to be a lot more detailed/ dirtied up for feb's PA theme. I just slaped on some simple shaders for now. The plan is to make a lower class girl who kicks some butt with an old chain gun. She'll be wearing a torn up dress and some old raggity clothes and I'll probably mix in some futuristic stuff like gravity boots or something like that.

I saw all the great models from January's contest so I wanted to see how I would stand up against the best. This is about 7-8 hours work so far but any critiques will be very valuable.

Neat look! I love the creases on the clothes!! Any chance of a meshview? I'd like to know how you got those fine wrinkles in.

She's hot too :)
I think the helmet could look a bit more characteristic though. It reminds me a bit of a safari helmet but still lacks a bit of punch when compared to the rest of your really nice model.

Also you say she'll kick some butt; though she still looks very neatly dressed. The shirt nicely tucked in, sleeves rolled up perfectly aligned, the helmet straight...she could use some losening up.

I understand its only 8h of work (wow, great speed you have there) and there's more to come, I just wanted to give my £0.02 ;)

Can't wait to see her full body!

I have a rough sketch of the character here.

I've been workin on the dress a bit.
The belt, the boot and the color scheme is still being worked on.

Wiro - thx. I fully agree with the comments you made. I'll be working on those next.

Also the renderer that I'm using is the good old maya renderer :)

Wow, that's awesome. I really like her face. Instead of her chain gun what about something like an old musket or something a little different like that. The cloth looks really good too. Look forward to more.

I think it took me 8 hours to do the drivetrain on my scrap rig!!

perhaps a middleground on the weapons....a good ol' tommy gun might be just right, not too big, not too small, plenty of firepower.

plus she's cute! :D

-and I love that last pose-very anime-I like it!!

keep it up, there's lots more time!!!

Oooh, oooooh!!! That's very nice!! Love the pose and the clothing now. The too "tidy" clothing I mentioned before looks like it might actually work now. I hope you'll give her a nice facial expression too. I think her pose craves for a nice smiling sneer or something. Grrreat!

not such a 'nice girl' anymore.
I love everything about that dress - the folds, the tears, the motion. nicely done.

one crit if I may. In the sketch the head seems to go with the line of the punch. In the model she looks like she's posing. maybe throw her shldrs back a little too.

looks really nice.. love the soft glow of the image.. the boots look a little wird though.. the grid like texture on them seems to be warping wierd.. maybe you know this already .. but i thought i should point it out

I think tommy guns jammed up alot, so in a post apocalyptic setting I would go for something a little different, try modifying the design of a tank gun, to suit her size,
( meaning the machine gun on the top)
everything else looks great, looking forward to seeing what you do:D

I'm not sure if tommy guns jammed a lot...they seemed to be pretty effective for the mobsters in the 20's and 30's....

If not a tommy gun (which looks pretty good here--granted it's roughed in)

I'd probably stay with a submachinegun like an HK-MP5, or an assault rifle like an AK-47 or FN-FAL (AK's are renowned for their reliability, which might be a weapon of choice in a PA world)

Here is an update

I decided to go with an mp5 as her gun
it seems to fit her nicely

For the background I'm going to try to make a sort of junkyard
look with broken vehicles, smoke and loose wires etc.
Any other ideas for a cool background are welcome

Kenneth_fejer: The character is modeled textured and lit in Maya.

Koryh: I think the illustrative look comes from my lighting style

oh, where´s the tommy gun ? If you stick to
the Mp5 - it´s too large currently :-) has tons of images
with inspirations for customised versions.

could be of use for you.(?)

Sorry guys - I disagree about the big gun.... She seems so quick and stealthy. Why would she want a big gun to slow her down? I see her with something small and convertable. Like a swiss-army knife of guns. Multiple small barrels, scopes etc.... Something easily hidden for deception (sweet, innocent, helpless girl), or holstered for acrobatic escapes.

Other than that - VERY cool model and character. Like the torn-up skirt and am happy that you changed her to a bruenette!! I am suprised that more people arent doing female characters.

I was also thinking about what weapon she could use . . . because the actual one is a bit too large (just my opinion) !
Why not giving her a kind of sniper-rifle ? A long small gun would fit her better, i think ;)
And a sniper would also make sense: He may be fast, but she is not the strongest... so with a sniper she can eleminate enemies from a distance - just some thoughts.

Big update

I worked forever putting this junkyard background together.
I still need to work on the lighting and some of the textures
Also I'm going to play around with background buildings that
are more futuristic and maybe I'll put a small puppy in there
as a pet.

yes! I like it very much!
I like the detail of the glow in the white sky! cool!
Very detailled scene!
Only I think she is not very integrated in the scene. maybe is because she doesn't throw shadows... at least... I can't see them... mmm...

I think will be better if she look at the camera (with the same pose)

That's only few thins not important,... just my opinion. :)

p.s.: I'm not sure I've already said you, but... excelent cloths! have you done them with a plugin or "hand"?.

I rate. Admittedly I´ll rate all others 5stars then - to be fair:)

As pabbloz put it, the integration isn´t perfect yet,
is the girl composed on top currently?

Beside from texturing -as you mentioned allready -
the scale of some of the junk seems odd. mostly
too small.

But I really like you´re texturing style for the girl.


(who hasn´t been rated at all - which is better than 1 star :-)

I noticed that she doesn't integrate that well also.
I think it is because I lit her separately from the scene.
maybe If I drop some shadows and add some contact shadows
it should work better.

The character and the background is together in one scene but she does look a little composited. I should probably tone down the rim lights on her.

The cloth is done by "hand" very tedious

Ah, you're going for the whole lot now :)

Damn, I feel so slow...I only just about got my character modeled. Probably won't make any scene :/

Anyway, I's true that she looks composited in. I think it's mainly due to the lack of dropshadows.

But what bugs me the most is that she almost disappears into the chaos around her. I think you should try to contrast her out a bit more; either lighten the objects behind her (maybe by letting them disappear into some haze) or darkening them and light her up more brightly. I also think you should enlarge the building right behind her to frame her better. Right now there is just too much happening around her to actually guide the eye towards her.

Other than that it's some very nice modelling there!
Oh...and I also think she should sport a different gun...something more home made looking to tie into the rest of her gear.

That's a lot of stuff in that scene. I love it. The attention to detail is supurb. I would, however, like to see some stronger or at least more defined shadow shapes. Not darker, just more decriptive. Some of the great modeling and shapes you have going on are lost in the flatness of the lighting.
Just my 2 cents.

i like it, the only problems i see is the compositing (lighting, and the feet don't really look like they are standing on something)
and the other problem i have is with the empty hand/arm, it looks a little stiff and it's completely hidden by the body in the silohuette (sp?) if you move it up and out i think it'd look better and give a better sense of balance i think

Here is a small update. I changed the composition a little bit also I integrated her more into the scene.

LOL!!! :D if you keep the pan, put a spatula in the other hand :D (or some other cooking implement)

I personally liked the MP5, the Tommy gun tilted the whole thing more retro, the frying pan...too funny!! I like it!!

the small highlight on the left foot is a bit distracting..otherwise, very very nice work!!

Í´ll see that the pad is finished later today.

Seems PA is archaic (sp?), girls do the housework
and defeat the evil radiation microbes, while the men
sit in the bunker and tape the showers.

Nice texturing on the pan, maybe that´s what´s missing
on the backround (?).

I just LOVE the look of this. It reminds me of a theater set or a photo studio. It looks great.
Maybe a bit intense on the rim lighting though.
The model is wonderful.

It will have more intensity if she looks Up!
Just move up the eyes-target up and it will be perfect!(For me)

hehe the pan is a nice touch, kinda reminded me of 'Battle Royale'. One and a half hours of japanese schoolies in sailors suits killing each other with an assortment of weapons, knives, machine guns, crossbows, poison etc. Anyway the kid with the saucepan lid, won the day :-)

This challege has renewed my obsession with cg and also pushes me to do better because the competition is so great.

I think I'll take a break from it cause it's taking too much time from school, girlfriend, life etc...

I don't have maya at home and I'm not at school today so here
is a little photoshop touch-up of the previous pic

I still need to pose her fingers and head but I think I completed most of the look and feel that I wanted when I joined this competiton 2 weeks ago.

well, I love this image. it has such a different look to it. But if I had to pick something for you to change/fix...I would say her fingers and left thumb joint.
her fingers of her Right hand look like tubes, and the first joint of her left thumb seems odd. they just don't look as good as the rest. and the rest looks freakin' great! good work.

Well, here is my contribution.
First off, Looking great, impressive picture making.
On with the suggestions.
I changed the lighting a bit. I felt that by giving her a more classic 3 light setup, it made her more of a focal point. I also added little fill light from the fires. Also I introduced some cooler colors to help balance the picture a bit. I suppose you could either desaturate the flames to push the sepia pallet or do what I did and add some cools. I just effected the character to retain the focus.
I hope this helps. I really like the picture. It has a great quality.
Another thought, add some very subtle color to the sky, or just a gradient value of some sort.

I think it´s awsome!
I just got to poke at one thing... the fry-pan.
If she wants to hit (or scare) someone with it she would probably hold with a fimer grip. The pan shuld (IMO) be rotated 45 degrees to he left or right OR move her wrist (with arm attached to it) a fraction (say one pan-grip) to the left and rotate the hand accordingly.
Try and hold something heavy (like a pan) like that and look at the angle of the hand and pan... man (it rimes):rolleyes:

And another thing... I asume there is no wind since the smoke from the fires rise more uppward than sideways. This means that the clothes look the way they do due to movement, and a big movement as well. I would put some aggitated dust around HER right foot (our left side). OR if I´m wrong about the wind... put some airborn dust in front of everything.

Love the pose! Her face lacks expression though, I just get the feeling that she should look a little more fierce. I also agree with Henrick about the hand...that kung-fu-grip takes away from the dynamics of your pose. I like the background, but i think it's too busy. Maybey desaturating the colors in the back will make her "pop" out. I like the chararacter design, very unique

In my role as a director/producer there´s only
one critique : where´s the pad ?

But to be serious, I really like the rich colors, koryh´s fill
but the eyearea of your last version. maybe a faint bit
of reflections in they eyes to make em more lively.

Anyway, you´re way farther than I am in the contest.
Even worse, my images refuse to show up :-)
must be fait (sp?)


If you find the time, will you add detail to the debris ?
