I am partial to blue and burgandy myself. I do agree that it would look excellant colored. I do have a question though, when colored, what will the round things be in the background? Meterites, snowball?

01 January 2005, 07:00 AM
heh:) its gona be will be a snowy background kinda thing yea...maybe trees or mountain or rocks or yea...undecided:)

any crits tho?

01 January 2005, 12:17 AM
alright...i got the leather done, and the metal, but my comp crashed on me before i could save it:( so its there as referance

what do you all think? i tried to play with the balance of the leather to cool down to the rest of the colours, but iunno, as i said, my colour theory sucks:P

Click Here for Image (high_res) (

thanks:) back to trying and getting back to the spot i was at with the metal:P

01 January 2005, 12:32 AM

heres the link if that doesnt work...

01 January 2005, 12:33 AM
alright, heres an update...ive made the head a tad bigger, and ive also changed the belt a bit to try and make it look like its wrapping around him...still not there i know:P

ive only included the painted part in this image, and im wondering if anyone has any crits for it id be glad to hear em, my teachers/classmates in school here are all 3d junkies, and know little about im pretty much all on my own:P

01 January 2005, 09:35 PM

Chin is very pointy and narrow.. Maybe widen it for more manly look?

Try to uniform all the lighting in the scene.

Oki doki.. Thats it! :)

01 January 2005, 12:07 AM
alright...heres an update on the head.....i took your advice and teh advice of one of my classmates to tone down the highlites, and the nose

image (

what do ya think?

01 January 2005, 12:16 AM
yep better, I think you should erase some parts of both eyes, his lefteye (on the right) runs trough in the nose and the other eye should be smaller, well both of them actually

01 January 2005, 12:24 AM
i was gonna leave the black there for a bit and use that around the actual eye...i havent painted the eyes in yet, as i am very lazy and hate starting in new places (you shoulda seen how many attempts it took for me to get the head started, i was up all night last night just starting it :(

but yea...i see what you mean...ill get to work on that now:D i like it when people helps me a lot cause im still a n00b at this stuff

01 January 2005, 12:52 AM

alright...long time since an update...ive had to fight with photoshop and my computer a lot recently:( had little time to work on it

ive started in on the you can sucks....i really dont know how to paint backgrounds...never have before...and if anyone has would be greatly appreciated

i was thinking of a castle back there on a rocky landscape with snow everywhere...lemme know what you all think...and i really should colour in some eyes...

crits always welcome:)

01 January 2005, 03:11 AM
I think the chin could be shorter and his forehead higher -- his eyes should be near the center of his face. Also, his eyes are at different heights. You could put them at same level if his head is straight, OR align the point of his chin and the angle of his mouth as though he's cocking his head to the side.

Nice work so far. Your character has a royal look to him.

01 January 2005, 10:17 PM
i like the blue and cold athmosphere you develop in your picture

02 February 2005, 04:00 AM
i havent yet worked on the face cause its what frustrates me the most:P but i did make the fur more furry...i really didnt like the old i spent some time on it and layed out a basic "what i kinda want"

now im near happy with still gonna go in and do some:
a) colour changes to match the soon-to-be blue background
b) change the eyes/chin like soupy suggested (as soon as i figure out how to do the eyes)
c) finish that damn background
d) change the cape so it looks more flowy...kinda like a cape should (already started in on that with the fur)

image (

anything else i should/shouldnt be doing? please tell me...crits are most needed

ps - sorry for the low quality pics...but yea...all i have right now is a free accnt at an image hoster:P

02 February 2005, 08:36 PM
*watches the wind whistle through the thread*

02 February 2005, 03:16 PM
i like the fur so far. you should block in the background colours really, to get a better impression of overall composition.

02 February 2005, 07:45 AM
alright...long time to update due to the fact im working on yon train during classes and this on my "free" time

i drew out a new background the other day cause i didnt like that yea...

image (

and yea...i fixed up a few perspective issues with the drawing (had no ruler at the time) thats why im either in or out of the lines

any comments?

02 February 2005, 06:04 PM
alright...i feel like im diggin up a grave here

reason i aint been updating is cause of sickness, formatting (and almost losing whole file and all backups), and that train scene that im working on (currently trying to get a waterfall in the scene, its hell)

anyways...ill prob post an update later this evening or before i leave for school today
i dropped that silly little castle there as i was told the house WAS better..even if i dont like it:P so now i gotta repaint the house seeings how i dont have any backups of it cause of that format (stupid windows)

i could still use some crits on what you thinkabout the dude, or any other ideas that you might have

02 February 2005, 04:33 AM
here is the promised update

image (

i did forearm, eyes(finally), and im redoing that housish thing in the back...

currently im going to concentrate on the character only as i have 3 weeks to finish this (my portfolio show is on the 18th) so please help me out as to what you see that needs fixing

PS - just realised he needs eyebrows >.< doh

02 February 2005, 08:09 AM
vey nice so far, kinda like the way u did on the fur.i had a piece progressing halfway which has the similar cloak with fur too.hehe, might need urs as reference:)
it could be nice if u add some intricate patern design onto the gold plated thing on the sword.and the red circular thing in the middle of the chest armor and one on the waist would look better if its crystal like?just a thought though:)i'd love to see ur next up date soon

02 February 2005, 10:48 PM
yea...the sword is just base colours right now, there will be runic stuff and junk and yea later, prob start on that tonight

what do ya mean crystal like with the red thingys? change of colour or reflectivity or something different?

02 February 2005, 01:11 AM
yeah, thats what i meant.looking forward to ur next update:)

02 February 2005, 08:35 AM
alright...heres another update

i didnt get to the crystal thingys yet, but i did near finish the sword...been at it for a few hours now and its bed time cause i got class in the am:P

so yea:P

i did however add the runes:) i kinda like how they turned out...will prob go and recolour the ones in yellow later...they turned out a bit weird but i was to tired to think anything of it

hey, i like the fur, the painting is comming along well. I would just like to say, the sword is cool and all, but it reminds me of a power ranger sword.. lol sorry, i know you arent done with it, so s'all good.. Peace Man

02 February 2005, 11:19 PM
Its gettin better, but hen i look at the fur it sort looks like an optical illussion. I dont know exactly what it is but it hurts my eyes to look at the fur for more than a few seconds.

02 February 2005, 11:58 PM
the fur looks really something about the thumb kinda looks too round....the texture looks brilliant for the metal and cloth both...the handle of the sowrd looks a little flat maybe you want to make it more ...uhmmm detailed ....but over all from what i saw in class and here.... its come a long way and its looking good..

Its gettin better, but hen i look at the fur it sort looks like an optical illussion. I dont know exactly what it is but it hurts my eyes to look at the fur for more than a few seconds.

u know it does look a little blurry.....maybe making it a bit more sharp would help...i donno...just a thought...:)

02 February 2005, 01:14 AM
i think thats just the compression i had to use to get it under 120kb so i could host it:P

cause it doesnt look near as blurry in the full res

ah well...i sharpened it up a tad, will post an update later

i had the crystals all chaged and stuff, and then PS crashed on me..must not like my 93 meg file:P

so off to work i go to do those again:)

thanks for the replys

02 February 2005, 09:04 AM
alright...finally got tired of the guy and started in on the background

worked in a few clouds and continued to colour the building more

i have no idea why i coloured the roofs that shade of blue, seeings how they will prob end up with snow on em anyways

oh well, im tired, ill just roll with it till the time comes where i cant roll no more and just fix that then

image (

so any crits on my "clouds" i know they aint much to look at (i think they are crap, but not too bad for a first still doing everything for the first time with this painting)

so yea...crits and comments CRAVED please:P

02 February 2005, 04:30 AM
alright...quick update on what im doing

did some work on the background, mountains/more detail in the house/and some snow drifting...dropped the old rocks and started in some new ones

should prob throw in snow drifts later or soon or whatever

what do you all think?

image (

C&C always needed

edit: oh yea...and removed the power-rangerish spikes:P

02 February 2005, 09:22 AM
no comments??

i could really use the help, like i said, its my first time painting and any tips on background painting that you can give me would be GREAT

02 February 2005, 10:45 AM
i would use semi transparent color and try to make more depth in your painting by making some shapes that are really far away in the distance . That would help relate to your character and the BG you are using....all i could say is work more with perspective and think of where and how will you composite your information in the area ....wat should have more importance or emphasis...the clouds look decent....perhaps a snow fall in the BG ....there is this big gap between the character and the castle which needs to be connected .... try to make concept rough ideas of how things would look and then dive into making them and then to test it first and stand back and see it its working....

eager to see more ....good stuff

This is a pretty interesting character -

Id say the things you would prolly need to mess around with is:
1. The face - he looks scarred for a snow warrior
2. The colors - maybe try and do a more monotonous color showin how cold it is and how light is havin a hard time penetrating the clouds
3. Like someone mentioned, snow blizzard would be pretty interesting
4. For the background - I suggest finding a reference pic of a snowy mountain on (

Since this is a coo character, i couldnt resist painting over a parts of it to show u a little bit how i invision this (hope u dont get mad) just a quick 10 min paint over.

hope this helps,

03 March 2005, 06:09 PM
damn man that looks so much better:)

i was gonna have snow driftin by, but i was gonna do that last, finish everything compositionally first, then add the snow

but yea...w00t for advice:D

thanks:D ill start right on it tonight (have to leave for class right now)

03 March 2005, 12:49 AM
