View Full Version : Few Questions about low poly car models...

Well, I'm sure this topic has come up before because I think I acutally seen it before...
but I did try to search for it and couldn't find it so I have no choice now but to make a new thread.
Anyway, I only have two questions.
1) poly/triangle count?
2) texture map resolution size?
I'm aiming for low poly car that can be used for games like Need For Speed Underground
or any other car racing games.
I know as time goes on, the poly count can increase, so I'm not sure how many polys can
games be now.

I never made low poly cars myself (only some Quake III maps :) ) but I might help you with some rough numbers:
Depending on the (age of the) game your polycount might vary between 3k and 10k - but this really depends on the game engine and obiously the hardware it was designed for.
Typical texture maps are 256x256 to 512x512 pixels, while the latest engines seem to support 1024x1024 px.
But this is probably the most useful hint I can give: if CGTalkīs Game Development (http://www.cgtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=40) and Game Art WIP (http://www.cgtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=39) forums canīt help try to find game-specific forums! Whenever a game allows for 3rd party models or maps, these forums usually have dedicated sections for building extra content and - more important - offer experienced modellers, who know how to build, rig, texture (and animate) new models for that specific game.
