Hello, Ive tried modelling this shape in nurbs:


however I had to model it as separate pieces that dont look right when rendered (the refracted rays look odd).

So it looks like Im gonna have to render it in polys or subdivs as one solid mesh (both of which I am poor at).

This might seem like an obvious question, but could someone explain which would be the best method and how. Maybe you could send me a link to a tutorial that does a similar shape? or even better you could explain how to do it.

Sounds like you need some basic modeling tutorials to get you started, once you can get the basic shape of one of the pieces (? the sticky-out bits...) with polys, duplicate it, combine them and put a smooth on it it should work fine. Try www.digital-tutors.com (http://www.digital-tutors.com/digital_tutors/display_video_category.php?vcat=mmod) - they have great free video lessons to download from really basic upwards.

If your nurbs shape looks ok in the viewport then your basic geometry is fine. It is possible that the normals of your nurbs surfaces do not face in the correct direction. So check your normals.

Maybe post a screenshot of your perspective view and your render results.
