View Full Version : Bunny Girl, Andrew Hickinbottom (3D)

01 January 2005, 10:51 PM (

Title: Bunny Girl
Name: Andrew Hickinbottom
Country: United Kingdom
Software: 3ds max

After being amazed by the Incredibles, I was inspired to make something in a similar style, so I chose a fairly unusual character - a Playboy style Bunny Girl!
Made in 3Ds Max 6, rigged with biped, lit with a combination of skytracer (Global illumination) and 3 point lighting.
Hope you like it!

01 January 2005, 04:21 AM
Very sophisticated work !!
The character is so animated. Any chance we see some motion in the future?

Thanks for sharing, well at least the visuals.

01 January 2005, 04:28 AM
love the is sexy but still humorous enough to be cutesy.

my only crit is the butt looks a little funky but i can see it easier with the non textured version, it is just the style of course though and your choice

01 January 2005, 04:29 AM
Nice character with an inspiring stylisation. Great model.
WIP completed successfully.
2 crits (minor) though : I think shadows on the character are too dark with respect to the style you have chosen. There's a major antialiasing issue also, and you should definitely set AA to higher number of samples, because your work deserves it.
First class

01 January 2005, 04:45 AM
Very stylish. Wonderful job.

01 January 2005, 05:50 AM
Oo oo love the characterisation here, what a great character! :bounce: :bounce:

Awesome that someone is doing caricature so well. :applause:

01 January 2005, 06:05 AM
fantastic character, and beautifully modelled, and rigged-Pixar should give you a job!

01 January 2005, 06:08 AM
Big picture quality. Would love to see some animation.

01 January 2005, 07:22 AM
Very nice, appealing model. Like the styleization a lot. :applause:

The lighting, however, highlights a lot of the wrong surfaces (such as the inside of her elbows), and flattens many of the angles of interest (such as her eyes, hairline, breasts, hips, legs, feet, and hands), and exaggerates a few oddly (depth of her hair, chin-to-neck), IMHO; doesn't show her off very well.

And since when are Bunnygirls *unusual*!?!? Oh yeah... since the sixties ended... -sigh-

01 January 2005, 07:40 AM
The lighting, however, highlights a lot of the wrong surfaces.
And since when are Bunnygirls *unusual*!?!?
I know what you mean - i really liked the deep shading that was created with Global illumination, but you dont have much control over it. Lighting is not really one of my strong points in Max. Maybe i should experiment with dirt maps, ambient occlusion or 'proper' lighting, but i think this looks alright.
And about the 'unusual' bunny girls - i said that cos ive never seen one in 3d, let alone on this forum! Most people settle for elves, babes, warriors and orcs, so i was quite pleased with the originality of the character - it had to be made!

Salazar - Im gonna (really try) and do some animation soon - shes got a full set of morphs and phonemes, so shes pretty expressive.

Shakes - hear hear! Lets hope John Lasseter gives me a call! :D Shyeaah right!

Montclaris - As far as i know, the AA is fine. I have a tendency to sharpen my renders a little before submitting them, and its enhanced by the slightly smaller version you see on this page before you click on it. If you are talking about the noise on the stockings - thats intentional.

Hpslashluvr - One of my mates mentioned the arse too. Given the size of her thighs, her arse would have to be obscenely huge, so for designs sake, i kept it fairly small. I used elastigirl from the incredibles as a basic reference.

01 January 2005, 07:45 AM
I was just being ironic about them being unusual... they are. Was just saying that I've always thought it an interestingly attractive costume... there should be more of them. :D

And by all means- bring on the ANIMATION!

01 January 2005, 07:50 AM
perfect character!

01 January 2005, 08:21 AM
She´s beautiful and sexy :) !´s an original design.I´m waiting too for some animation with congratulations!

01 January 2005, 08:47 AM
From a photographer's pov I would lose the first pose. It isn't that important, it's still sketchy and I don't mean to be an arsehole. That first pose resembles the fourth, which is better.

Well, completely apart from that, absolutely brilliant work.

Hail to the bunny tail.

01 January 2005, 08:58 AM
excellent character andy !
the facial morphs look perfect

01 January 2005, 09:09 AM
I just followed your WIP and then came here, and I thought I'd let you know that I love how it turned out. The head was terrifying at first haha, but you pulled it together really well.

John Warner
01 January 2005, 09:18 AM
excellent. very good job. i absolutely love it. and this comming from a guy who hates sexy female 3d characters. really top notch stuff you've done here, man.

01 January 2005, 09:22 AM
After following this models development in WIP, I have to say what an excellent character you've ended up with Andy. She has bags of expression and personality. 5 stars from me sir! :)

01 January 2005, 10:20 AM
Excellent character realization and superb facial expressions!
You may wanna contact Pixar asap!

01 January 2005, 10:44 AM
Awesome stuff! Great character! :D

01 January 2005, 11:57 AM
Thats reaaaaaaally awesome andy, love what you´ve done with the hair and face

I´ve checked your wip thread and its very nice to see it coming this stage...

great character!!

01 January 2005, 12:31 PM
Yeah that kind of 3d I really like :bounce: , one day I will start creating such models too, but I have too much ideas, and the day is onl 24 hours long;).
Edit: I want it on frontpage immediately.

01 January 2005, 12:33 PM
WOW I follow the WIP and I was stunned... 5 star:thumbsup:
Really good facial expression, she really remind me some of "the incredible" character

Only few thing: her foot seem a little too small IMHO, and I don't undestand if the hair are motionless or they can move. For example in the second pose (with the chair) the rear hair should swing back pulled by gravity. Try to use some hair simulation (max have it?)

Sorry for my english :(

01 January 2005, 01:06 PM
This model is very sexy. It is also very well done. Great Job!

01 January 2005, 02:13 PM
Great work Andy H. Really like the mix of toon and realistic style of her.

01 January 2005, 03:01 PM
excellent modelling

01 January 2005, 03:37 PM
I love It
The girl's face is awesome

01 January 2005, 07:40 PM
great job thank you for all the steps thats a great post.

01 January 2005, 08:17 PM
The perfect bunny gal.
Excellent Model

01 January 2005, 09:55 PM
simply amazing! :applause:

01 January 2005, 11:15 PM
Very incredible.... haha, get it?.... incredible...??? anyways, this is awsome work, you really captured the pixar look. good job. :applause:

01 January 2005, 11:41 PM
I like a good, simple, yet immaculate presentation of a project. I also appreciate that you didn't go for the ubermensch hyper model look. Her thighs are realistic in a toonish way! Congratulations friend!

You earned your stars.

01 January 2005, 12:19 AM
I followed your WIP and it has turned out great. beautiful and expressive character

01 January 2005, 12:47 AM
Wonderful character. Too, too cute :)
I had a look at your WIP thread and it was great to see the progression of the design, you really ended up with some top-notch work.
I agree that the expressions really bring her to life, she has a lot of character and that's what really makes the Pixar models stand out, so you've achieved your goal there.

01 January 2005, 01:02 AM
Ta Very much for all the comments! Very encouraging!
Ive done a render of some of the expressions that can be acheived:
01 January 2005, 01:18 AM
very sexy

01 January 2005, 01:53 AM
From start to end it has been one of my favorite projects to date. Heh, well done, and please do keep it up. The expressions you managed to create with Bunny made it all ten fold better.

01 January 2005, 02:00 AM
Wow! It's so rare to see a really stylized face in 3D that retains so much attractiveness. In 2D you can cheat and make each angle look great, but to do it in 3D is very impressive! Thanks for the flat shading, wires, and targets, too!

Did you try making her rear just a little rounder? I think it would help seperate it from the legs and, given the size of her thighs, whouldn't look disproportionate...

01 January 2005, 03:03 AM
beautiful work, congratulation...

01 January 2005, 04:23 AM
This is a great character, made pretty nicely I might add. Can't wait to see that animation you talked about making. Wonder what it will be about:twisted: ?

i love it very well done i love the emotion.

01 January 2005, 02:16 PM
yep , that is very good. Lovely character work. Posing is great and facial expressions are even better.
only critic would be the lighting. Your skydome probably hasn't got enough lights, you can see the shadows they don't blend well together and it gives the image a sort of dirty feel which I'm not a big fan of..

great job nonetheless

5 stars !

01 January 2005, 03:34 PM
I like this kind of figure with comic style or some 'design' forms... really an accurate and wonderful work. Congrats... simply wonderful.

01 January 2005, 12:09 PM
Really nice character, I love it.

01 January 2005, 10:16 PM
Hi Andy

5 stars from me too! Really great work :)

It's a shame we missed out on getting you over at Digi-Guys last year...

I've been busy with Admin stuff since Xmas - so I missed this one - glad I caught it before it goes frontpage

It really is a great job - and is apealling/sexy without being 'sexist' - like many other CG girlie images you see (I can say this, as I'm a girl :D).

Can we all look forward to an animation soon?

Tracy T

01 January 2005, 11:49 PM
Woo! Its a small world after all!

Hows it going over at digiguys? The wardevil trailer looked excellent last time I looked.

I dbout itll get front page - its too late now anyway.
Im gonna try and animate her, but i havent animated for years, and not in Max either. Its not something i enjoy as much as character modeling.
So obviously, getting back from work and doing 'chores' is a hard thing to do.
Ill try and come up with some sort of idea and make a start with something next week maybe. Im gonna take it easy this weekend (ive wasted 2 weekends on this already!)

01 January 2005, 12:21 AM
perfect charcter modeling and skining . U did this job as professional mode .
like elastgirl ! ( Incredbles movie ) 5 stars froma me .:scream:
good luck

01 January 2005, 02:54 AM
That looks like one hell of a bunny

01 January 2005, 10:13 AM
i really enjoyed viewing the progess of your character. the texturing looks great, it shows the personality the sexy bunny model. the posing and facial expressions seem just right for her, your work is very professional and special. i look forward to seeing more of your work.

01 January 2005, 06:27 PM
Hi Andy :)

I don't think it's too late for frontpage - it's a really nice piece!

If you don't do an animation - how about doing a 'Bunny Club' scene? That way you could use the same base model & then experiment with differnt hairstyles & slight costume changes?

It would make a great poster :D

Thanks for the comments on WarDevil... we have loads more to show soon (but it's all NDA stuff... you know the score!).

Things are cool at Digi-Guys, as we're actually moving the facility from Pinewood Studios over to Ealing Studios - we're taking over the old Vangaurd (Valiant) 3 storey facility (our builders are in at the moment, getting it ready).

That's whay I've not been lurking around looking at everyone's cool postings

OK - I look forward to seeing more progress with this :)

Don't work too hard!

Tracy T

01 January 2005, 03:26 AM
Wowww.....
Great expressions, rigging, texturing, ect... 5 stars.
(one question: did you use UV maps for the surfaces?)

01 January 2005, 04:54 PM
Very nice clean model :) Good stuff

01 January 2005, 04:29 PM
very nice character and postures  she`s hot I`m in love !

01 January 2005, 07:06 PM

really great character! =)

01 January 2005, 11:19 PM
Lovely work! :)

01 January 2005, 12:13 AM
Splendid Andy, She's Sexy and cute ! :)

01 January 2005, 02:27 AM
Very expressive. I liked looking at the progress on this and now seeing it come to and now seeing it come to its fruition. It would be great to see a cast of characters for this. Different bunnies the bartender etc.

01 January 2005, 03:30 AM
I'm very appreiate the facial expression!
And the unique style of proportion! It make her so cute! again!

Could you make a wallpaper of her?

I think the deep shading makes the face more jump-out and give it a bit mysterius look.
that's a relly good work! well done!:buttrock:

01 January 2005, 11:07 AM
Woo! Lovely:applause:

01 January 2005, 12:08 PM
The style is wonderful.

Very hot.

Would love to see some animation.

I'm in agreeance :)

01 January 2005, 12:52 PM
Great work. I love her design.
Do forget to show us the animation if you do it.

01 January 2005, 01:01 PM
I like the girl !

01 January 2005, 01:22 PM
Great work !
I love her design.
Don"t forget to show us the animation if you do it.

01 January 2005, 03:16 PM
Fantastic job on your model, and as a newbie modeller - very inspiring! Good job!

01 January 2005, 04:51 PM
Very cool work man... Maybe she will become a new Playboy logo???

01 January 2005, 05:05 PM
Thanks for all the comments.
Just thought id post this test i did a while ago.

ITS NOT MY ANIMATION - just some mocap i whacked on to test the rig and to see if it worth me animating. So dont expect my animation to be anywhere near as good as that!
I dont have much in the way of ideas for animation, so im gonna get some audio from a film, and then animate around it. Kinda like how the 10 second club does.
Im convinced that Cameron Diaz is gonna be her voice - Brash, girly, excitable and very American. Im trying (with no luck) to find samples and wavs from charlies angels and seeing what i can use. I cant do anything unless i get some speech first. Anyone got any ideas or alternatives? I want an animation that would be predominantly happy, but also contain some other emotions like annoyance, surprise, sadness or curiosity.

01 January 2005, 05:54 PM
Yeah CG Choice gallery Congratulation! I really love this girl

01 January 2005, 06:05 PM
So we have to wait for your job finish... But do it fast man!!! :applause:

01 January 2005, 08:15 PM
Gorgeous babe indeed!

Thumbs up!

01 January 2005, 05:34 AM
I really love your design and model. Upon seeing her I got a big smile and instantly recognize the style from the incredibles. Just amazing work. Can't wait to see animation.

01 January 2005, 04:44 PM
This is graet, the hair is the best. Keep it up

01 January 2005, 06:52 PM
Hi Andrew. Great work by a fellow Brit....! With regard to a voice to go with your animation, do you not have any husky voiced girlfriends whom you could digitally record rather than pinching something from a film? Just a suggestion! Claireabella

01 January 2005, 08:35 PM
simple yet expressive........nice work Andy:thumbsup:

01 January 2005, 03:34 PM
Looks abit like the blond one from Smallville. Very nice work.

02 February 2005, 12:31 AM
AWESOME! love it!

Reminds me of Cameron Diaz

02 February 2005, 05:11 AM
I like it,so lovely ,so sexy~~~~

02 February 2005, 04:56 PM

The Internet Movie DataBase website ( ( is a great resource for finding things out about movies and actors. The link at the top of this post should lead you to a page that shows what films Cameron diaz has been in. Thought it might help if the Charlie's Angels idea doesn't work out.

02 February 2005, 05:31 PM
I have been thinking where you can get good lines with emotion. Go for A Life Less Ordinary as that has a few good cuts in it.

If you need a wav file I am sure I could find a good line for you (or someone else might know a line from the movie)

02 February 2005, 10:41 PM
Hmmm, it kind of reminds me of the last actress from Law & Order, Elisabeth Rohm. Check her on the IMDB for Deats.

The F.O.T.I.
02 February 2005, 03:06 AM
What's not too like?,...It's a Playboy Bunny! Seriously, nice clean, efficient model.

02 February 2005, 08:31 AM
Oooo oooO.... me love bunnies! :bounce: .... the styling is superb..the proportions are awesome...great work.. but i do have some kinks with the lighting (higlights)... could be used to enhance some of the suttler elements...i guess a lil too harsh for me... :)

02 February 2005, 09:21 AM
Really cool work.
I like the style of The Incredibles and you brought it perfectly into the bunny.

Keep the good work

02 February 2005, 05:39 PM
looks like she should be working at the (playboy) mansion

02 February 2005, 01:10 AM
Looks cute, great model

02 February 2005, 09:58 AM
i love the way you define simplicity in your modelling, like the hair, so simple yet invokes a sense of "suitable" for your character. Very well done indeed :)

02 February 2005, 10:48 AM
very nice character.good job:thumbsup:

02 February 2005, 01:41 PM
looks like she should be working at the (playboy) mansion

I told that she will be a new Playboy logo. :D

02 February 2005, 05:34 PM
nice work i wonder how u made it so cartoony...

02 February 2005, 11:33 PM
It is very cute... I am not tend to being attracted to cartoon style, but your models' poses are very well done... Nice job...

02 February 2005, 11:39 PM
Yeah , i like very much the stile, only for me a little contrast in the image, but the character is very funny and looks like pretty.

02 February 2005, 06:38 AM

i like this carachter
but too dark shadows

02 February 2005, 03:40 PM
No words.

02 February 2005, 12:55 AM
cool model, dude love the poses and facial expressions they give the character personality and attitude top notch job.

02 February 2005, 02:48 AM
colol very cool... like the models.......

02 February 2005, 03:17 PM

Excellent model. I very much like the the level of detail and the smoothness of your meshes. I happen to really like exhaggerated stereotypes like this anyway, so I'll admit i'm biased. You've achieved a very nice result here and I can easily see the painful hours you spent perfecting "her" thus far.

I've actually tried in the past to achieve something barely similar - short curvy body, and insanely long legs for a different model, however I had to admit I cannot draw on the computer really yet, as I'm a beginner. I'm still a charcoal pencil kinda guy. I comb forums like this seeking inspiration, which your work has just provided :)

Anyway, just wanted to add my positive comments to everyone elses, very nice work indeed!

02 February 2005, 09:02 AM
any animation?

02 February 2005, 09:49 PM
What a fun character! ^_^

02 February 2005, 03:28 AM
Very clean model! Looks like it is very well rigged too, if the mocap is as rough as you say then kudos - it moves very nicely! Something about it reminds me of Jessica Rabbit. (a compliment)

02 February 2005, 08:45 PM
hi people,
I dnt post ere often infact never lol, but upon readin this andy i no u need sum voices, at this link u will find some, have fun mate :)....o and luv the model lol

02 February 2005, 06:42 AM
Aside from the recent orc that I took a look at, this is definitely my favorite model I've seen on cgtalk lately (not to say there aren't other great ones!:) ). Great job.

02 February 2005, 02:27 PM
you have done your best!

02 February 2005, 09:22 PM
So stylish and sexy. Perfect realization. Sweet poses too.
This inspires me to do some character design. I will keep this picture.

02 February 2005, 11:24 AM
lovely model- a very definite Incredibles influence without being too much of a take-off the style of the characters in that film. A really cool cartoon-style character which is always good to see as photo-realism stuff quickly bores me even though i appreciate the work & artistry that goes into realistic cg. The expressions & poses are very nice too- this is a character who is begging to be animated!!!

02 February 2005, 12:24 AM
This little chcik is adorable. I love it. I like that she has so many poses, keep up the great work!:bounce:

02 February 2005, 02:59 PM
Perfect character! Very clean model! She is beautiful and sexy.

02 February 2005, 05:58 AM
Wow, really well done with no wasted poly's. I hope this one hits Exposé.

02 February 2005, 04:56 PM
Cheers for y'all comments and help.
After lending loads of cameron diaz dvds and nicking bits of audio here and there, ive got a pretty good collection of sound clips i can use. Some more suitable than others. The most likely one is from a jay leno interview, but its very fast talking, so in order to get me used to animation, ive started with a simple clip.

Heres the WIP thread:

02 February 2005, 05:50 PM
yo. andy. i was surfing this thread and realized i never posted, i though i must have given you your props for such a fine ass model. I would love to see her in a short animation or somthing and will be checking out this and all the other threads. But yeah, this is one of those models that I show to people when they whant to see an awsome example of high res modeling. Strait up this is as good if not better than the pro Pixar stuff.

final word, I love it dude

p.s. - your low poly fulll metal jacket guy is still one of the best game models I've seen to date!!

02 February 2005, 10:16 PM
As a woman I appreciate the way you limited the gratutious nudity, alot of other people wouldn't. After my second look the still is just an amazing personification and it really did remind me of the Incredibles modeling style. Great job!

02 February 2005, 12:05 AM
Aw, thanks! I was especially proud of the way that all progress shots in my WIP thread are fully clothed - no intricately modeled nipples or gratuitous nudey modeling here!

As a possible idea, I was thinking of taking a look at all the stereotypical sexy costumes and adapt them for my bunny gal. Im thinking nurse, secretary, surfer girl, cheerleader etc... while still keeping the incredibles look, and never going overboard with the 'pervyness' ahem.
It would be pretty quick to do, and i could do lil variations like different hair and slightly diff faces. I enjoyed making me bunny girl, and want to do something similar again.

Its yet another hare brained scheme i have that will no dbout result in many a weekend indoors rotting behind my keyboard. Dunno if i can be arsed to commit myself to it or even if its worth it....

02 February 2005, 07:47 PM

That sounds like a really fun project to do, and a little more classy than some of the other ones people undertake when they try to do "stereotypical sexy". The secretary thing cracks me up though seeing as I've never met a sexy secretary but then again it's a fun stereotype from feature films.

03 March 2005, 12:03 AM
so cute! she defently has the pixar look. the shadows are a little too dark around the hair, but I like the Incredible look...sorry bad pun.

03 March 2005, 04:44 AM
wow... it reminds me "betty boo".. it's a really sexy and amazing work..

03 March 2005, 07:57 AM
Ive started work on a new character based on her. I dont know wether she is gonna be bunny girl in her day job or office clothes, or a totally different character for her to interact with in an animation.

Ive posted some progress pics in the WIP thread - go take a look:

Yay - 1400 posts :bounce:

03 March 2005, 11:13 PM
yeah, what a lovely, sexy girl.

I'd like to see in her an angry expression.

03 March 2005, 07:02 AM
Just thought id say that ive made a version of bunny girl in office clothes for the animated short im planning to do sometime.

Take a gander:
Gonna model an office nerd next!

03 March 2005, 09:37 PM
great character!! i'd like to use her playing Unreal!! that would distract 'em!

03 March 2005, 03:42 PM
She is an INCREDIBLE girl, men!!

Good work, respect.

03 March 2005, 07:56 PM
Happy Easter!

I couldnt resist....

03 March 2005, 09:57 PM
Very cute :)

Happy Easter!

03 March 2005, 02:08 AM
:banghead: IM DYING IN ENVY! Seriously awesome work, and in time for Easter too! :bounce:  I just saw your test animations, and I totally have confidince in your animating skills!

This is really fun work. There are lots of people experimenting with eye modeling/shading techniques on these forums, but I think I prefer your above all of them!

Would you be interested in posting your technique? They are sort of Pixar-y but have this extra luminosity in the iris that is great. I am a max user and would love to see a mini tutorial or even simple description with wires or shader screenshots, etc.

04 April 2005, 03:50 PM
A+ :applause:

I am a max user and would love to see a mini tutorial or even simple description with wires or shader screenshots, etc.

I made a concave eyeball first. If you dont know what this is, its an eyeball, but with the iris polygons moved inwards to create a convex shape. Sort of like the hole bit on the death star!
This helps to catch the specular at opposite directions to the eyeball itself - it simulates the refraction you get on a real eye (i think - im no scientist....).
The eye shader is a blinn with a diffuse map and a contrasty specular map ramped up past 100 to create a very intense hilight.
Hope that helps somehow.

Heres a tutorial i did - dunno if youve already seen it:

love your avatar darkremixx! Who is that guy anyway? ive seen him loads of times and i forgotten his name....

04 April 2005, 11:03 PM
its domokun,

Wow! I love you style! So simple yet detailed. You've created some great characters! Do you have a job? If you don't, I can't see it being too difficult for you to get one.

Also, I'm wondering, it's been forever since I touched 3dsmax, so I might not even remember how to use whatever technique you used, but can I ask what you did?

Very cute! I really like the idea for this character. It would be cool if you made more characters to go along with her then you could animate them!

Really expressive and stylish; and - I mean this in all sincerity - I like that she doesn't have an enormous and out-of-proportionally sized rack.

Truly inspiring work. I think I like it better than your office girl (but only slightly).
