Wow, my first thread on CGtalk. Been looking forward to this for a while.

Anyway, sorry to be so longwinded, but hey, it's kinda a long story. I won't be offended if you just look at the pics, as that is really what I'm here to show you.

A friend of mine who's the lead singer for a local metal band asked me to design a cover for him, and initially, I was intending to draw it, but a while back I started screwing around in photoshop, and came up with this:

First Version

Well, here's what happened. I bought a new harddrive a couple days after I began a this image, and in some haste, put it in my computer, and left it in the bottom of my case. Well, after a couple days I decided to put it in a proper drive bay. Well, I unplugged it, then put it in a slot, then as I went to plug the cord back in, there was a spark at the socket in the back of the drive, and the whole computer shut off. Suffice it to say, it was ruined, and the image had already been copied onto it, and deleted from the other harddrive.

So, I hadn't really made any revisions to it, and well, hadn't heard back from the guy in a couple weeks. Well, shortly after christmas, he and his bandmates finished recording, and asked if I would still be able to do the cover. Well, the only version of the image available was the low res one above. So, I opened it in photoshop, and expanded it to 16 x 20, and after a night of essentially fully re-drawing it, here's how it turned out like this:

Updated version

Pretty different, huh?

Also, here's some slightly modified versions

Everything you see has been done in photoshop 7, with a tablet (4 x 6) and I've spent about 10-15 hours on the entire project to date.

We're leaning toward the one with the green backlighting. Anyway, we're still working out some of the other details, so this will be finished by (hopefully) some time later this week. I still have to add a background, text, and do the rest of the cover (insert pages, back cover, etc).

Lemme know what you think, or what I should change. btw, I know the anatomy's off. That was kinda the point. I Kinda steered into the cliche on this one.

Thanks in advance for your critiques!

You obviously know your way around with photoshop! Nice work. One thing that i would like to comment on would be the charaters left hand. It seems rather weak or something - maybe the way the forearm tapers towards the wrist. You say that you ahve changed the anatomy purposefully but i find this distracting... maybe its just me. I also find that arm annoying... it doesnt seem to work for me. Why is it up like that - the other arm seems all powerful but that arm the way its bent - it could look more striking if it was straightened or something. I dunno But appart from that i love the way you have painted the torso and material wround the waist.

Keep up the awesome work!

Very nice work so far and I too lean toward the image with the green backlighting. The raised arm does look a bit odd. You have done a great job shading the torso musculature but the muscles above his abdominals and below his pecs don't exist in human anatomy so they just look like boils or something. Then again, he is obviously not human so that might be just great.

Wow very cool ps job. I like organic and mechanic in one. The body is detailed enough, but the mech part needs work…

I am sure you are on the top of that. ;)

Petty cool. I'd go witht he green one as well. The middle one is also nice. Maybe you should put more detail into his forehead. It seems rather empty compared to everything else. And maybe it would look better with less of the bg. The only thing I dont like about it is that you cut the legs off. If I were in your shoes, since the legs are cut out, I'd cut out another bit of the body to add more balance to it.

But other than that, its look fantastic. Nice use of Black and good choice in colors.

Maybe my question is not what you were expecting here, but... Does your drawn have the same proportions of a CD Cover?

I mean... I f you have to look for that after all the work you´re having you might have to do a lot of things again...

Hope everithing is allright, if not, hope you can fix things inside your deadline.

Nice painting!

I'd go with the green as well. Something about the contrasting colors feels more comfortable. Also, the light source that is coming from the top left should be affecting the forearms. The left arm feels awkward because its just kind of a dark void in the picture. Also, DoInferno has a good point about whether it will fit onto a cd cover or if you are already planning ahead for that.

Otherwise, cool picture, it sure feels like a metal CD cover
