I have no experience with Lightwave's particle system. However I'd like to have luminescent, glowing particles streaming through these tubes:
Can anyone with knowledge on how to use Lightwave's particle system give me a rundown?

do the particles actually have to cast light? or can you fake it with a single point light jittering around and flickering?

It would be nice if they could cast light, but I'm totally open to faking it. Is there a big difference in the amount of work or rendering time?

As far as the particle go... I did a quick test... Add an emitter (nozzle=sphere) place it into you pipe, size the generator to fit within the pipe, in the motion tab set the velocity direction so that it will flow along the direction that you pipe lies, give it a little vibration (adds a little chaos), no gravity needed. If your particle start to do odd things then click on FX_Start in the Scene tab (this runs the simulation and gives a true result).
That will give a basic setup... in my test it worked well, the particles flowed along the pipe and between just fine.
You could now activate your emitter in the Hypervoxels dialog and add textureing and such there or maybe you could try Partigons with Luxigons attached to the particles...
Hope this helps a little.
you might give a look to Ogo_Hikari wich allows particle lights.
