View Full Version : anamorphic 1.85 flat (not 16x9!)

There's a bunch of tutorials out there for outputting to DVD 16x9 widescreen but I'm not quite clear on how to do the same for an aspect ratio of 1.85 flat. I want the DVD player to automatically apply the correct black bars to this film, regardless of whether its viewed on a standard 4x3 or a 16x9 Widescreen TV (no letterbox - optimal resolution!!)
Is the pixel aspect ratio still 1.2? Should the resolution be 720 x 389 (full width)? Help!!

the DVD format allows you only 4:3 (PAL 720 x 576 with pixel aspect 1.0667) and 16:9 (PAL 720 x 576 with pixel aspect 1.422). rest of those aspect ratios you have to do with letterbox, sorry.
So in order to have aspect ratio 1.85 to dvd as 4:3 material your live picture height should be 768 / 1.85 = 415. so (720 x 415 with pixel aspect 1,06667)
or if you want maximum information then you should choose 16:9 version:
height 1024 / 1.85 = 554 so the final resolution would be (720 X 554 with pixel aspect 1.422)
Of course you have to render letter box there in order to have the 720x576 image size for dvd.

Dude. 16:9 is actually 1.778:1. the difference bewtween that and cinematic widescreen (1.85 is like 10 pixels top and bottom on a PAL tv ! On an NTSC tv you would only have the smallest cropping top and bottom that I doubt there would be much image loss at all !

thanks guys! I understand now, finally. I thought DVD players would somehow auto-letterbox a video if it were any aspect ratio from 1.78:1 --> 2.35:1. Apparently you can only choose 16:9, and manually letterbox the remaining. Thanks again!
