Title: Octopus In The Bathroom
Name: Thomas Mangold
Country: Germany
Software: LightWave 3D

Well, obviously a sea creature in an unusual environment doing not necessarily the appropriate thing for an octopus. But what what the heck, it's only human.

So, this is the result of a long journey. Loads of problems (object size: 1.2 million polygons), slow performance, painful hours of positioning the arms (and then realizing that they are to short) and chrashing computers. Many bones, but still not many enough to deform all the parts smoothly. A painful undertaking which taught me a lot of things.

Thanks to all the folks who helped me during the creation of this image.

01-04-2005, 08:16 PM
Well for all your pain... it was well worth it. It is a fantastic image. Slightly disturbing, yet funny.

Very nicely done.

01-04-2005, 08:19 PM
Amazing! the textures on the Octopus are just great, so realistic. My only crit is the the BG is so dull compared to such a wonderful creature! Hehe I just realised what he is doing. So grusome! great job, I would love to see what the texture looked like. How did you do the UVs?

Again, amazing job!

01-04-2005, 08:20 PM
Indeed its awesome. Maybe the arms are too short because its a baby-octopus (look at the scale of those tiles).

01-04-2005, 08:39 PM
Actually I didn't use any UVs. I tried in the end to save some time and create an overall UV map, but LW didn't manage to create an atlas map. Just froze. Later on I managed to create one by selecting each arm and create an UV and stitch them all together: But when I started to modell my octopus I created two UV maps for the bump maps inside of each sucker. I then cloned this element over and over while scaling it down to create the arms. The rest of the octopus is just textured with procedurals and weight maps. When I did this I realized that using weight maps with this amount of polys increases your file size in a way that's not funny anymore. Max size of my octopus: ca.100mb. Without any maps: 5mb.

An Octopus shaving it's tentacles, freaks me out :)

It's an awesome image, the Octopus looks great

Excellent piece!

01-04-2005, 09:33 PM
 Very cool! Thats awesome that you textured it using mostly procedurals. Great modeling job too.

01-04-2005, 09:36 PM
awesome, looks very cool. I like it!

01-04-2005, 09:38 PM
damm that s excellent, really good image.

01-04-2005, 09:44 PM
:bounce: great!!! :buttrock:

01-04-2005, 09:44 PM
It does look great, the surfacing and comp are amazing.

The shorn off suckers are a bit disturbing :P

01-04-2005, 09:46 PM
Ouch that must hurt! Excellent render, shaders and texture!

01-04-2005, 09:46 PM
Thanks for the laugh !

Excellent image, but funny as well. Five stars

01-04-2005, 09:47 PM
This is great! I love it. This must be the month of the "sea-creatures inhabiting some really peculiar places" :)
and the shading/texturing of the octopus is so nice. now if only the enviroment was a little bit dirtier :P
well done!

01-04-2005, 09:49 PM
the horror of it!! wow great image, very well done but MY GOD, that idea makes me itch!

01-04-2005, 09:53 PM

i'm fond of this kind of picture!

Goooood :D

i love octopus.Very good rendering and lighting

Would you like to see my 2D challange concepts & city

01-04-2005, 10:39 PM
Brilliant! :bounce:

What about a wire? that would be great to see how's the geometry.
Thanx again for that great piece of art!

01-04-2005, 10:55 PM
that's really creepy.

wow I am a big fan of sea life and I kinda got some gross and weird.

good stuff, totally impressed...wowza.

01-04-2005, 11:06 PM
Hey Love IT!

I'm shuddering, I hate shaving too :)

One suggestion... The basin... is it a REALLY shallow bath? or a shallow sink with no taps? Perhaps deepen it a little to make it more obvious or shrink the plug hole. The tiles make me think bath.. the plug hole and depth make me assume a shallow basin.

amazing work!

01-04-2005, 11:07 PM
nice image, but pretty disgusting in a way. gave me goosebumps. haha.

01-04-2005, 11:10 PM
This image is EXCELLENT!

My favoriste thing about the image from a technical point of view is the main shader. If you ever fancy releasing the preset for that surface then let us know!

Artistically my favorite thing is the realisation that you must have carried out an impromptu autopsy on the real thing to see what the suckers look like once they're detatched from the body. =]-

01-04-2005, 11:29 PM
This is crazy! At first I didn’t even see what the octopus was doing…
Than I saw the razor and the cut off suction cup, and it gave me goose-bumps. I think that this is the first piece of work on CGTalk to do so…
Keep up the good work!

01-04-2005, 11:30 PM
Indeed I bought an octopus and cut it to pieces. Actually my art director bought one too and managed to convince his wife to cook it after taking several snap-shots. I didn't manage to eat mine after having this close autopsy relation to it. Anyway, I owe him. Thanks, Buddy.

And thanks to all of you for your comments. Didn't feel that good for quite a while.

Happy new year

P.S.: No special shaders. Lightwave incidence gradients do the trick.

01-04-2005, 11:32 PM
Very nice skin shader and render. It`s reflecion via map or it`s reflecting proper enviroment around?

01-04-2005, 11:33 PM
very nice, the shader it´s great...

01-04-2005, 11:38 PM
haha, it's FREAKIN' FUNNY!

4'5 stars from here!

01-04-2005, 11:41 PM
Holy! That's awesome! Simply awesome.

A bit disturbing. Though, very funny!
Superb job man!

01-04-2005, 11:42 PM
It's the real environment plus some white glowing cardboards for reflections in the shaving area.

01-04-2005, 11:42 PM
good work!
it is absolutly great

01-04-2005, 11:48 PM
Great work, i like it very much, if you could give a bigger res. over 1280x1024 I would be very happy :D

01-05-2005, 12:11 AM
Very, very, very GOOD!!!

Do you have any WIP page to see some wires, etc...

01-05-2005, 12:13 AM
Nice render, I like it alot.

01-05-2005, 12:26 AM
awsome! cant even think about how long that must have taken great job

but... Ouch :D...Damnit! hah

01-05-2005, 12:29 AM
And I don't dare to tell anybody how long it took. :)

01-05-2005, 12:43 AM
And I don't dare to tell anybody how long it took. :)
Truly creepy.

A great image, as everyone has been saying. The self-mutilation aspect is disturbing.

But just on the CG:

Procedural texturing is a very good thing. I think you prove that. However, the tiles let down the overall quality of the picture. They are too reflective, opening up the space when enclosure is what you expect. And in their reflectivity they are too uniform.

01-05-2005, 12:48 AM
I like the render very much!!

01-05-2005, 01:05 AM
Dude! It's awesome! Very cool and original idea! Octopus shaving its suckers :scream: no way! Absolutely sweet so from me no doubt!

01-05-2005, 01:08 AM
A sea creature theme seems to be going on here in the 3d community. Nice job. A++

01-05-2005, 01:18 AM
holy crap! really nice render!

01-05-2005, 01:30 AM
Ein Wire wäre noch cool. Ansonsten wie schon gesagt sehr gute Arbeit.

01-05-2005, 02:02 AM
Cool. Hey, are you the same guy who did the other octopus a while back, the one modeled in LW and rendered in C4d. Which one was this rendered?

01-05-2005, 02:29 AM
I'm guessing there's probably a way to get that poly count down a tad but great image well executed

01-05-2005, 03:17 AM
 You follow the tendency of mixing bugs with fine atmospheres, I liked, well done.

English poor:eek:

01-05-2005, 03:29 AM
This made me laugh! :scream:
Excellent work, m8!

01-05-2005, 03:41 AM
Great Job. Beautiful. Horrifying. Effective. I think this picture is the first one to really make me crindge in about two years.

01-05-2005, 03:45 AM
Nice creature! I can't find anything wrong from your render. It's perfect!

01-05-2005, 03:52 AM
this is just insane... so super cool. I absolutely love it, the theme, the realness, everything. awsome!

01-05-2005, 04:00 AM
Aw, they'll grow back... he's an octopus: he could shave off a whole tentacle. Probably doesn't even feel it, cause he's a dumb mollusk.
Nice work. Made me laugh to beat the band.

01-05-2005, 04:25 AM
Cool! The wet skin shader is really superb work, and the originality of image is so intersting!

01-05-2005, 04:55 AM
aaaaa dude, you are sick :surprised just kidding, great work

01-05-2005, 05:16 AM
ooooooooooooooooooooooooooh R&R!

01-05-2005, 05:28 AM
one problem though, the "tentacles being shaved" bit makes me shudder!:D
...only that

01-05-2005, 05:43 AM
cool, that was amazing texturing and modeling, that look nice especially the wet u use any shader or plugin to render the wet skin???
finally,i feel your long u render this images???

01-05-2005, 05:53 AM
That body tissue looks absolutely stunning. I would be so proud and who cares how long it did what needed to be done to get it great. I bet each new anotomical situation you encountered you had to research it and learn how to do it! (tentacles, wetness...etc)

Anyway, my only critique is the razor...looks a little composited...for such a perfect octopus it really demands that the rest of the "extras" be as perfect as the subject and should be addressed to make this complete.

01-05-2005, 06:50 AM
Awesome job :surprised , would like to see a wire since you explaind how hard it was to position and texture it and all ... im wondering...

01-05-2005, 07:26 AM
Really super and funny, congratulations.

01-05-2005, 07:46 AM
wow~! :0~Awesome job !Beautiful,i m loven it.

01-05-2005, 08:02 AM
Incredible work. I like it so much, very original idea, nice shading and modeling. ¡¡congratulations !!.

01-05-2005, 08:47 AM

Painful image you got there! i like it!! haha it's a very unusual! but funny. haha

01-05-2005, 09:22 AM
Very nice, great texturing especially. :)

01-05-2005, 09:36 AM
ROFLMAO sehr geniales bild! ein bisschen krank, aber extrem lustig  und die optik ist der hammer!

just too bad the poor guy has to shave without shaving foam :scream: just kidding!

01-05-2005, 10:09 AM
An Octopus shaving it's tentacles, freaks me out
Well, indeed. Freaking awesome.

01-05-2005, 10:32 AM
wow excellent !:bounce: :scream:  another view please :)

01-05-2005, 10:36 AM

01-05-2005, 10:47 AM
excellent!!! very realistic and a lot of humour too
five stars

01-05-2005, 10:52 AM
hey, great image!...but wouldnt it be nice if there was just a little blood on where the tentacles were shaved and on the razorblade! almost like slimy transparent blood, but only if i look carefully!....not sure how much blood would come out in reality?, would prob freak people out more!

01-05-2005, 11:42 AM
ye sea food festival :scream:
very nice I like rendering and textures

01-05-2005, 11:45 AM
amazing...but where is blood ? :)

01-05-2005, 12:04 PM
That just looks very disturbing to me, dunno why..

Great picture!

01-05-2005, 12:29 PM
Love the idea!!! Very well done illustration!!! Five stars!!

01-05-2005, 01:12 PM
That's gotta hurt.

Nice modeling work. Texturing is great as well - only thing I'd add would be a bit more translucency, looks just a bit too solid.

cool nonetheless.

01-05-2005, 01:18 PM
Very VERY cool dude! Idea is terrific, shading is very real.

I agree that the background is not as great as the octopus though. You could improve with a bit more details. But anyway, amazing, excelent work!

01-05-2005, 01:41 PM
nice looking Octopus! this is a great picture
he looks really calm doing that.

i´m curious about your rig would be nice to see it, and a wire

keep it up!

01-05-2005, 01:52 PM
poor octopus ; he must be suffering :D

01-05-2005, 03:25 PM
Altough I do not know if it's realistic to expect from Octopus, just add some blood around and it will be a shivering image...and improve rest of a room.

01-05-2005, 05:01 PM
how did you train the octopuss to do that ?

listening in loop to Britney Spears ?!?

01-05-2005, 06:34 PM
I dunno...
I think if there was blood it would make it look more like self-mutilation than personal-hygene (which is what I thought the point was...)

Anyway, AWESOME. Any chance of a higher res??? It would look great on my other monitor with the octopus in the kitchen :D

Great work.

01-05-2005, 08:47 PM

That's an awesome picture, I didn't see what was going on at first, but it really made me laugh when I did. Excellent work on all fronts. :)

01-05-2005, 09:12 PM
What the heck are you trying to say with this image? hehe.
It really made me laugh when I noticed the razor

Great disturbing work, nothing more to say than praize :)

01-05-2005, 09:13 PM
Wow, don't you think that would hurt him??

Greeaaat image! But then again, what do you axpect from a 1.2 million polygon squid.

01-05-2005, 09:56 PM
the only thing missing is the faucet, its in some kind of sink, right.
that my only crit. good job

01-05-2005, 09:57 PM
Technically, nearly perfect. Conceptually amusing.

However (and I am sure I am harshing everyone's mellow), an octopus out of water is a pile of gealtinous skeletal support to hold it up like this. It's not immediately apparent to anyone who has never seen an octopus out of water, but to those who have the image is kind of like looking at a very realistic boneless chicken. Amusing, but odd in the extreme.

If this has been mentioned before in this long thread, please disregard--I just thought it relevant.

01-05-2005, 09:59 PM
im a teenager... i thought ive seen it all..guess i havent:eek:

01-05-2005, 10:14 PM
Pure9e, you're right. An octopus out of water is without any form as there is no skeletal system. But an octopus isn't to gel or rubber like. Actually the arms are quite hard and not smooth at all. As far as I noticed the suckers are only connected to the arm by the thin skin which is wrapped around the arm. What I experienced too is that the octopus doesn't have any real solid color. Even the grey/beige color of the dead one I bought is only an almost infinite amount of little tiny dots on the skin of the octopus. It's like pointilism in art. Apart from giraffes the octopus is one of the most interesting animals I came across so far.

in your sofa
01-06-2005, 12:32 AM
now thats just silly

01-06-2005, 02:58 AM
Superb texturing of your octopus. The boring tiles are so spot on as they compliment the superb rendering! I love the understated razor!

01-06-2005, 03:33 AM
the shader is almost perfect, if you could do animation you would learn even more!
the water splashes are trully great. the enviornament is simply, works for the shot, but could have some depth and blur to it, it would be amazing. beautifull job.

01-06-2005, 03:37 PM
Extremely freak and funny, man... long time not seeing concept, humor and good image together. Apart from anything we can note as not real (when the hell a shaving octopus will be that?), is a wonderful work from start. Sure, you could improve background, but that´s minor.

Congratulations and please keep that touch.

01-07-2005, 04:55 AM
every thing is perfect I love your works .

01-07-2005, 08:38 AM

01-07-2005, 10:46 AM
so realistic!

01-07-2005, 02:08 PM
excellent image, this image funny as well

01-07-2005, 02:42 PM
really great image but i think you could enhance realism a lot if you `d use Sub surface scatering on the octopus. And i agree that the background looks a little dull. Anyways great image still!!!

01-07-2005, 07:09 PM
Very funny image!, I love this :applause: could you post a wire?

that's very funny! I like the idea!
great job!

01-12-2005, 09:32 PM
Great job! Its a real clean render! Love it! Would have been nice to see some painfull expression from the octopus! Even if it was just with his eyes! Great stuff bud!

01-13-2005, 10:48 AM
...the idea of a self-cutting character is quite disturbing to me. however, very nice rendering!

01-14-2005, 12:42 AM
Seeing the suckers on the floor makes my stomach churn, but the modeling/texturing is amazing and beautiful. Excellentlly well done.

01-14-2005, 06:17 AM
cool design looks real love the texture

very funny and nice image......i love the textures....keep going .....

01-14-2005, 03:39 PM
will it's realy nice willdon

01-14-2005, 04:47 PM
great concept. though the sink and the walls may be overly reflective for the best of realism, but other than that can it stand up to the test of high res?

01-14-2005, 05:22 PM
great idea! made me laugh when i saw it. looks great! congrats on a job well done!

01-14-2005, 09:44 PM
Ouch to your construction problems and big OUCH for your octopus. Terrific.

01-15-2005, 12:04 AM
Ha ha, thats nice.

But why o why is he shaving his cyclops off, he is feeling sad.

01-17-2005, 12:57 PM

Man kann Studenlang hinsehen.

Absolut great work

01-18-2005, 11:23 AM
great pic!

01-19-2005, 01:03 AM
wow awesome....

did you use Sub Surface scattering for the Octopus fleash?
(hardly to recognize)

if you model octopus arms you can usually just create a short sector and dublicate it until the thip, that's how i modeled my octopus arms in a project for Hirschmann

i don't know if you modeled the suckers in one peace or did you assigned them by a boolean operation (could result a little bit fewer polygons).

would like to get in contact with you to chat in german.

Hake Oslo
01-19-2005, 03:42 AM
Haha. I love it. The Octopus looks so real, but the concept is almost comical.

Keep up the great work

Great creativity!!

01-28-2005, 02:29 PM
I don't know if anyone has posted this before but i think u made two mistakes:

First, the number of this shaved off ...things is 20 but there are only 18 missing on the tentacle.

Second i am no expert in sea life but why does this octopuss bleed? If i'd shave a finger off i'd do so... dont know...

But great picture. I like it =)

Great work very inspiring! I was wondering how you got such hi res textures and if you can direct me to a place where i can get similar ones.

Excellent, disturbing and funny. Looks great, great concept too. I think the fairly dull background works, brings the octopus to the fore.

My first thought was "wow... someone's done an octopus... in a bathroom?" ...then... "Well, an octopus wouldn't be so upright in an environment of air" (thinking this) then "what the #### is it doing?", shortly followed by a very brief instance of comedic appeal combined with (slightly more lengthy) sense of being disturbed for no good reason...

Nice job!

02-08-2005, 02:59 PM
 *applauds* I like it! Disturbing, but very good job, man.

02-10-2005, 09:06 AM
yeah, i knew there was a reason i always check my sink before i walk in the bathroom...thank you for re-assuring my unfounded fears

I think the octopus should bleed, yes... that would be normal... but what's normal in this picture? As to 20/18 problem - I think 2 of them are there, but you can't see them in the picture, because they're bloked by the octupus' body. Duh! If you want to be picky, then be picky in a helpful way...
And the rebelion (or revolution) thing... that's a very old joke.

I love the whole painful/beautiful feeling you get from this. Very strange idea, but I like it. =) No blood though! That would be too much! =)

I don't think theres any problems with the environment. Too many people think everything in life is filthy and full of marks, often bathrooms are extremely clean and kept new. I reckon those people must be pigs! :)

Everything in this image is great. Its a masterpiece!

Man, that's awesome! You created it so neatly, that it looks almost real. Sorry for this, but I have one problem, I see the reflection of the octopus on the back left wall, but not on the back right wall. On the back right wall, you can only see the reflection of the other wall.

Again, the image great.
