12-31-2004, 07:05 PM
Hey guys, thank you very much!
Sorry about the broken links, I believe they're correct now, isn't it?!

>>it looks like the octopus, from another user (don´t remember the name)

Actually, it is for the same ad campaign. The Platinum studio is responsible for the original room photograph, and we (SeagullsFly ( made the manipulation, retouches and the 3d crab. The campaign asked for 3 images, one of a Lobster, one of a octopus and a third of a crab. Platinum made the two firsts, and we made the third one.

Fabricio Moraes is responsible for modelling the crab. Gabriel Loques helped me painting the textures, and I made the shading, lightning, composition and photoshop job (including CMYK calibration, irc! :)).

I'll add some more wires and process details tomorrow, ok?!
Again, thanks a lot for the kind comments!

Perfect integration !!!
FRONTPAGE admins PLEAAAASE ! :scream:

01-01-2005, 04:37 AM
I would've sworn that room was a render. The lighting looks too intense on some parts of the crab. The texture is awsome though.

01-01-2005, 09:55 AM
Yes, I agree that lighting is too intense for crab.. also, in the same time when crab model looks pretty sharp, photography is litle blured out, ie details are not so sharp as crabs ones. So I can suggest to blur a bit crab or add some noise to it for more realistic effect :)

Except of that, image is really impressive!

01-01-2005, 12:12 PM

I Think you should show us this(ese) Map texture(s).

That's it. I won't comment this image.

I just hope you guys from SeagullsFly keep rocking on 3D this year and keep losing with Selemedal inside the COD and MOHAA fields.

Abraciowskis e feliz ano novo pra vcs!

01-01-2005, 12:37 PM

01-01-2005, 03:26 PM

HEELP!!! This is going to give me nightmares! I always liked crab...until now...

Absolutely excellent work! Amazing!

01-01-2005, 10:09 PM
Very impressive. Can you share a bit on how the shader is built up? It looks quite complex and I have hardly any idea on how to build something like this. Is there some quite strong sub surface scattering here?

01-01-2005, 10:21 PM
I whould die if i saw that in real life

01-01-2005, 10:21 PM
Compositionally, it reminds me quite a bit of Bernardo Barbi's image. It's quite good though.

01-01-2005, 10:41 PM
lol better then the octapus good job i like it.

01-01-2005, 10:45 PM
this is perfect.cant say anything else

01-01-2005, 10:49 PM
WOAAWWW we really feel the same composition work with the octopus and spirit of the ad... the customer should be happy !

Modeling : 5 stars - Texturing/Shading : 5 stars - Lighting/Rendering : 5 stars !!

Nothing to crit, it's fantastic !

EXcellent Work
some of Action Will Be Great

01-01-2005, 11:17 PM
The integration is excellent, and the texture work is INSANE.

01-01-2005, 11:26 PM
jeez that's good only problem no one seems to see :-/ in the other photos it looks like the PS job is like really approaching blown out i love the first picture now THAT is perfect.

01-01-2005, 11:29 PM
Compositionally, it reminds me quite a bit of Bernardo Barbi's image. It's quite good though.

Yes... this crab is one of three illustrations that have been made for this publicitary campaign. Platinum (where Bernardo Barbi works) did the 2 first illustrations (octopus and lobster) and we from Seagulls Fly ( did this crab one.

If I am not wrong, the slogan of the campaign is something like "Don't let the smell of the kitchen take over your whole house"... Pretty nice idea by the way... he he he

We are all very flattered about the feedback we are getting on this one. Thank you everybody!!!

01-01-2005, 11:30 PM
Ive seen alot of yer work, and i just have this too say, its artists like you that inspires me.

01-01-2005, 11:38 PM
it looks wierd, lol just kidding
seriously it looks gorgeous

01-01-2005, 11:39 PM
Great texturing. Great rendering.

By the way, the octopus picture is better, in my opinion.

01-02-2005, 12:14 AM
Those are some awesome details!!! :buttrock:

01-02-2005, 12:33 AM
I'd have to disagree with you ago-stino; while I really like the octopus image, I think the crab composite is that little bit more realistic, it just 'sits' in the image better. Also, and this is such a small thing, theres something a little wierd about the octopus reflection in the marble; looks too Photoshopped (could it be that it has a LDR reflection rather than a HDR reflection? Do you know what I mean?)

Great work to the whole team at Seagulls Fly, you guys should be really chuffed with yourselves :D

01-02-2005, 12:40 AM
I was just curious, did you put all the lights urself or you have used GI and Final Gather (or radiosity, i dint use max for way too long) with HDRI ?
The picture is absolutely nice, may be you shuold write a tutorial on it. But i was just curious about the HDRI as you are using photographs, using HDRI would make life easier a lot of times.
Anyway, want to know your lighting and rendering setttings too. hehe. thx

01-02-2005, 01:04 AM
Very, very good. Amazing work. You should write an article explaining how you did the lighting of this scene.

Bom trabalho, pessoal. Parabéns! Bom 2005 para vocês aí do outro lado do atlântico.

01-02-2005, 01:17 AM
just amazing... beautiful shading and lighting ;)

01-02-2005, 01:30 AM
very nice indeed. the only thing bothering me though is the lighting. The lighting is very good but the crab looks like it's a different layer. Especially the front claw. the top of the front claw becomes dark, which doesn't make any sense considering the light is sitting right on top of it. The bottom of the claw seems to have no shadows and is brighter than the top. Another thing is the depth. the crab needs to be a lot more illuminated in the back, considering the back room is more illuminated than the actual front room.

Other than that, it's a really wonderful piece.

01-02-2005, 01:57 AM
:applause: HEIII you have reach the perfection! congratulation

01-02-2005, 02:04 AM

Hey...happy new year!!

I'm quite astonished with so much replies and comments! Thanks a lot!! As Cadinho said, we're flattered about all the views and comments. Thanks also for the front page (valeu Antropus, tu é O cara...e não por isso! :))

About the lighting, shading and rendering...

I've rendered with brazil rs, using only the skylight for shadows. No radiosity or light bouncing. No HDRI also. I've positioned planes with self-illumination materials on specific places to make the highlights where I wanted them. The textures we're blended between illustration and photos. Yes, there is SubSurface scattering, but very little, because the crab should look big. No displacement, only bump.
As I was rendering it for high-res-CMYK image (6K pixels wide), I rendered parts of the crab separatedly, and diffuse and reflection on individual layers, so I could control it's intensity on photoshop (I'll put these images, with the lights also).

Well, I'll put textures maps, wires and more details about the production on monday, when I return to Seagulls.

I agree about some lightning 'poetic licensing', but the Crab is the main thing on the image, and the claw is the main thing on the crab, so we had to make it look cool and jumping out the scene. I'll make a bit of an explanation of the lights on monday.

About the octopus...Platinum made such a 'favor' making it so damn good, so we had to make the crab worth some place on the ad campaign! :))
The 'Lobster' was also made by platinum, but it wasn't 3D, only photo composition.

Once again, thank you guys very much! More images to come...

Best regards to you all!!

Pretty cool, but I agree with Rony. The lighting does seem off a bit. The crab just doesn't seem to sit in the scene convincingly. Looking at the shadows under the table and other furniture, I think that there should be just as dark a shadow under the claw. Also that the side of the claw that is facing the viewer should not be so illuminated but in shadow. The current lighting makes the crab look too flat. It's a nice image, but with a little more lighting work it could look much cooler. Nice work.

01-02-2005, 02:45 AM
 Fantastic the details, congratulations teacher.

01-02-2005, 02:46 AM
Very good. A work that it does not deserve you criticize, only

01-02-2005, 02:48 AM
its about time that they took revenge. and with such style. nice work. no critics... just great job

01-02-2005, 04:22 AM
I have to agree with Knick Knack about the Octopus render, the reflections don't have any "specular" aspects to the...if that makes any sense, the reflections only reflect things darker than the surface, which is generally not the case with reflections, which is why I think the floor looks weird and in a strange way there is another octopus beneath it...????

01-02-2005, 04:51 AM
Good job man I love it:thumbsup: I think making distance between background and foreground is more important than the details

01-02-2005, 04:53 AM
Very similar to the octopus that was here on cgtalk not long ago... But very cool as well! I luv the detail and the materials/shaders and the composition! Simply everythin! Well from me no doubt!

01-02-2005, 04:58 AM

01-02-2005, 06:46 PM
Fantastic image :beer

01-02-2005, 06:46 PM
like the octopus this image looks very impressive !!

the shading and texturing are beautiful

01-02-2005, 07:41 PM
This image is amazing!!!

The modeling, texturing, lighting and composition are all astonishingly wonderful.

Very good job: to all who worked on it.

...but there seems to be a problem with it: usually a crab's rear legs grow from the side of it's shell but on this images I get the distinct impression that they are growing from the claw instead.

But it might just be my own perspective that’s warped. Still it is a tremendously impressive piece or work.

01-02-2005, 08:32 PM

I've had the octopus on my desktop for quite a while now, it always gets comments at I'll have a crab to go with it!
Gotta track down the lobster now...

01-02-2005, 08:46 PM
Wonderful ..

i wand brazil render setting please

01-03-2005, 12:54 AM

Deliscious crab. Just out of curiosity, what is the lobster, octopus, crab campaign
all about? Must be kinda funny...about dining out? Amazing stuff...

01-03-2005, 03:41 AM
wow the detail is just amazing
congrats !

01-03-2005, 03:52 AM
WOw great Composition and Shading. I could have sworn it was a real crab. Wierd hes in the house though HEHE. 5 Stars. Keep it up and amaze us once again.

01-03-2005, 04:32 AM
Very nice.. i only found it weird that the crab lacks shadows beneath him.. i mean.. he have nice shadows created by his err... feet.. but hte whole chunk of the body doesnt seem to cast shadow.. i mean.. the light source seems to be directly above.. so there's to be a hint of shadows beneath the body.. but from wat i see.. its all bright.. niwaes.. its juz my opinion.. great job on the crab!

01-03-2005, 05:04 AM
holy crab! that's one big piece of crab. excellent. although, don't u think that the opacity of the frosted glass door isn't quite right...cause don't u think that the image behind should be more darker or more visible since it's closer to the glass? just my opinion. still thumbs up to this render.

01-03-2005, 06:01 AM
wow,thats some piece of work.
Cant say more, not experienced enough to crit.

01-03-2005, 09:42 AM

Congratulation! A superb integration, and a amazing work on the "skin" of your crab!

Happy new year and congratulation

01-03-2005, 12:01 PM
Can't say nothing but compliments... and yea, please animate this beastie :)

01-03-2005, 12:23 PM

but do crab's have hair or fur idea

about it simply superb ....

01-03-2005, 12:28 PM
Congratulations !!! Impressive work !

Everything, from modeling to composition is top notch.

01-03-2005, 12:28 PM
crab do not have hair's ???????

:) thats my comments ...............?

every theing is fine .............................simply superb.................:bounce:

01-03-2005, 12:39 PM
Awesome good!
And the former one is nice!
Wonderful texture and light~

01-03-2005, 01:22 PM
my only crit and its just being a perfectionist would be that he doesnt have the hole for him to hide his eye into. crabs have this little gully next to their eye that they can fold their eye back into to keep it from getting hurt. your crab doesnt have this. everything else is very nice indeed.

01-03-2005, 02:02 PM
Awesome work. As has already been said, the texturing/shader work is exquisite. Great attention to detail as well.

For those asking about the crab's "hair"... crabs do have bristles or "feelers" that give them a sense of touch despite their hard exoskeleton. Sort of like a cat's whiskers. Some species of crab/lobster have more than others.

01-03-2005, 02:10 PM
Nothing to crit.

01-03-2005, 02:18 PM
Five stars from me.
Wish I can do this !
Maybe there are a bit things that are not good but I think it's not important. Perfect render.
:applause: :applause: :applause: :applause: :applause:

01-03-2005, 02:49 PM
Great 3d crab :)
The texture work is excellent:thumbsup:

01-03-2005, 03:12 PM

I'm really astonished about the replies, never thought it would be so viewed. Thanks a lot!

Well, here go a a few wires.

The CRAB was originally positioned by me, with a low-poly prop. Then, Fabricio Moraes (damn good AND fast modeler) modeled the crab, with a help from Gustavo Duval. I've added a few details myself only to increase the complexity on especific parts.

I'll post more images in a few.

Best Regards

Seagulls Fly (

Here goes a few reference photos taken by my faithful friend Fernando Jorge (Valew Pateta, vc é incrivelmente prestativo! Obrigadão!).

The main idea of making a 3D Crab is that the original animal is soooo disgusting, and positioning it grabbing the door would be hard on photo composition. So, the goal was to make a photo-realistic crab, but not as dirty and slimy as a real one.

Using these (and a LOT of other photos) as reference, we started modelling and texturing.
Model for FRONT mapping.

Diffuse map.

Bump map.

The textures were painted/photoshopped by me and Gabriel Loques.

Seagulls Fly (

01-03-2005, 03:59 PM
For the shading, no HDRI and no light bouncing. The reflection only reflects the planes (too hard to place highlights with a single HDRI image).

The render is separated because it was too big, and I could control its intensity with more control on photoshop.

Adding the 2nd over the 1st with a linear subexposition gives exactly the same result as rendering in one pass.

The lights are 3, plus the Brazil RS skylight.

I'll write about the shadows in a bit.

Thanks a lot.

an excellent work of the Seagulls Fly.

01-03-2005, 06:48 PM

Seagulls Fly? More like: Seagulls Rock.

I saw the stuff you guys did with a certain Brazilian dance celeb which was so helpful to me with regard to "soft bouncy bits" on females and much more.

Whoever thinks the octopus is better than the crab will probably revoke their statement upon further study of the relevant imagery.

Your work is of such a high standard that I feel obliged to say Thank You rather than great job. I look forward to your future posts. Oh sh*t, I've dribbled into my keyboard. hehehe

wow wow wow, that is so cool, i mean the furniture looks so real ... oh right its the crab we talking about lol. thats got to be one of the best photorelism pieces i have seen for a while, a really clever lighting set up to, pretty much a photographer approach to the lighting with using planes for highlights.

really really impressive, i just hope a crab doesnt wander into my house now ...

Very nice!
Congratulations all of the seaguls members!

i think that the octupus was better. And i see that on this one the mapping is not so perfect

01-04-2005, 08:49 PM
Well, there's more than 7 differences between the photos.
Here's the original and manipulated photo. I'll put some close-ups in a bit.

Thanks a lot

These guys are really the best! I´m proud to be their friend!

Rock and roll, baby!

01-05-2005, 01:42 AM
wow!. whatta crab!!! awesome!

01-05-2005, 02:04 AM
Wow...Cool. That looks kind of like an "octopus in the living room" picture someone posted a while back. There was a making of article if you search for "octopus" on CGN. But congrats, dude, on acheiving such fantastic realism. Now if you'll excuse me, looking at this is making me depressed that I can't do this.

01-05-2005, 02:06 AM
I'm not too sure about the compositing. It somehow does feel layered (especially the claw up-close). But that doesn't take anything away from being an awesome piece of art! Great crab model/textures/materials!

Wow! The bump is done so well. The reflection is great. The texture maps have enough details. It's wicked, dude!

01-05-2005, 04:44 AM
Very cool! It's no dout to be a superb work.

01-05-2005, 06:17 AM
U know what? the room looks CG. hehehe ..

Very Good team work... I am sure this beats the ILM teamwork.
And if its a solo work. U are god!

Good Observation skill. Very Good.

You are hired... welcome to my Studio ;)

01-05-2005, 06:17 AM
hahaha twisted. if I could suggest one thing though for this piece... the weight of such a beast with feet like that would be too much for the floor. I think punctures or dents in the floor could add some depth to this already beautiful piece.

01-05-2005, 11:05 AM
Wow! wow! wow! I could only dream of doing something like this so no crits from here! Great stuff! :applause:

01-05-2005, 12:52 PM
hahahah! it really looks like the ROOM is cg and the CRAB is a photo, ROFL!

very very very very very very very very well done. easily the most realistic cg ive ever seen.

01-05-2005, 01:51 PM
Very professional!

01-05-2005, 02:44 PM

01-05-2005, 08:50 PM
wow that is a nice lookin crab. hate to have one of those walk in my house.

01-05-2005, 09:47 PM
Great work. It would have been cooler if it had cracked the door though :D

01-06-2005, 04:38 AM
Really amazing work, I've seen none better. How did you achieve that great shine/overexposer highlight effect? I've played with Brasil some but no technique comes to mind to achieve that effect.

01-06-2005, 05:51 AM
this is ill sick madd cyco work man i love it texturing is crazy but ... compositing hmmm

i think it needs to be affected in some areas that might seem minute but like the claw by the greenish tile could use some indirect reflected light from those tiles just to tie it in with the rest of the illusion

Crab is magnificent and texture is amazing!
In my advice the shadow underneath the crab is too soft!

Congratulation ;-)

01-06-2005, 01:16 PM
Well , what can i say ...... ! BRAZILLLLLLLLLLLLLLL:buttrock: 10 stars .....

I mean there are some things that're only GOOD, not EXCELLENT but it's not important.

01-06-2005, 02:21 PM
very nice done

01-06-2005, 04:44 PM

Hi, Fernando! Wow, this one it's even better than the octopus. Modeling, texturing, composition, pos-production... everithing. Tell me one thing: who's the client of this ad campaign? I saw the other images at Platinum website, but couldn't identificate the client.
Keep the awesome work goin' on.

01-07-2005, 12:51 AM
It is hard to doing but u did it .

bravo dear . good luck .

01-07-2005, 08:55 AM
This is a very awesome work.:)
A notice for those who are stuck in Maya and Renderman.:deal:
It is important for a work to be done artistically the software is not that important.
good luck!

01-07-2005, 09:22 AM
It`s so cool....Yeah....:buttrock:

01-07-2005, 11:03 AM
wow! (love the integration)

01-07-2005, 02:34 PM
Great work! somehow i miss the shadow of the crabs main body. shouldnt it be visible on the floor in consideration of the photographs and grabs perspective and light positon? shadows of the crabs legs are excellent though.

01-08-2005, 01:08 PM
incredible.. cngrats.. :applause: :applause: :applause:

01-09-2005, 09:02 AM

wow so much detail, very nice

01-14-2005, 12:43 AM
It so realistic looking. Great work! The attention to detail right down the the hairs on the claws are very impressive. Keep it up!

01-14-2005, 06:19 AM
love the work good awsome detail in the crab did you use hgri lighting

01-14-2005, 04:53 PM
Very original I must say... not to mention technical look

great work...

01-17-2005, 06:21 AM
thats awesome 3D modeling man' i like the texture u put on it' ur great, want to see some wireframes

01-19-2005, 10:20 AM
Really perfect

01-19-2005, 11:34 AM
great modelling and texturing but i dont think the image works. It looks like 2 seperate images composited in photoshop. The crab doesnt compliment the room and vice versa, the 2 dont react to each other. Good concept though, i just think it needs a touch of work.

01-20-2005, 03:22 AM
Holly cow thats a BIG CRAB!! Looks good!

01-20-2005, 08:48 AM
First of all; bravo! :buttrock:

Then a question; did you use SSS in the shell texture?

thank you for your precisions.

01-21-2005, 08:41 AM
I find the image really photorealist, the crab is really well modelled and textured but the habition is really quite carried out also, it's good job!!! Good continuation!!!...:buttrock:

01-24-2005, 05:18 AM
Excellent Wok!!!

01-24-2005, 07:24 PM
It's so realistic looking, very believable. I'm impressed how well you matched the crab up to the background picture. Great work!

01-27-2005, 10:08 PM
Juz amazing crab, really impressive work

02-01-2005, 01:30 AM
Man oh man that's good stuff. Me and some fellow students are viewing images and posting and such, and we stop at the good ones. And your work my friend, is one of those.

02-04-2005, 08:04 PM
That is Cool!! There is just one thing that is bugging me. The fact that there is nothing that is disturbed, makes the picture look funny. Just a suggestion.

02-08-2005, 02:48 AM
I've never been shown such detail within detail. Great work!

02-08-2005, 03:02 PM
excellent work

02-09-2005, 03:44 PM
Very realistic. Fizes-te um excelente trabalho.

02-15-2005, 04:20 PM
The idea of this is sooooooo creepy (love it). The color work is outstanding, great job!

02-24-2005, 09:52 PM
This is amazing. Really Great job! :surprised

02-26-2005, 08:39 AM
Excellent.....
But, I would like to see a little damage in the scene? It looks a little to clean? I mean a giant crab would inflict a little damange to it's surrounding, would'nt it? (Unless it a well trained house pet :) )
But it's still very well done....

03-02-2005, 12:47 AM
love the crab though the background looks overy white washed but awsome crab! mmm crab..

05-10-2005, 12:04 PM
The shading and lighting is working very good.Superb image !!

06-14-2005, 12:28 PM
(cant give u more than that!!:) )

09-04-2005, 06:34 PM
The textures are awsome, the bump mapping on the crab is great. Lighting is wonderful over all great.

01-30-2006, 02:07 PM
wow ........It very beautiful ....I like BrazilRender

10-14-2006, 06:53 PM
