View Full Version : Creature:Super Sculpey from a ZBrush Concept

I decided to have a go at making a Super Sculpey creature using some of my ZBrush creatures as reference. I took my Rancor and my Dino-Rhino and combined the two into this little fella. I was tempted to try him with Chavant nsp but settled on Super Sculpey so I could quickly bake it off.

I know I'm an idiot, but what is the material that you're sculping? And what kind of tools have you got? And umm.. Can you stop like for a week and then continue again sculping? And umm.. This is f-ing great! :)

The material I used here is a Super Sculpey and Sculpey III mix. These are polymer clays that can be baked at the end of the modeling process to harden the sculpture. With Sculpey you can keep working it as long as you like as long as you don't store it in extreme temps.
As for tools, well, I have hundreds ranging from tooth picks and ear buds up to professional Clay Rakes and a full set of dental tools. I have two main pieces of equipment which are a Pasta Machine and a heat gun.

i have some super sculpey but havent really used it much wondering if you could answer a few questions...
1. can u pre-bake some parts of your scupure?.... ive seen people talking about pre-baking small parts (teeth,eyes,fingernails) but none have laid down any rules about it because ive heard over baking can lead to scorching the sculpey which can let off hazardous fumes (true?)
2. you say you used a super sculpey and sculpey III mix.... is this to improve the clay in any way or just to remove the pinky color from the super sculpey?

Terrific sculpture but it doesn't maintain much of the Arsinoitherium properties besides the two horns. Not like that matters; it still turned out great.

Beautiful work! Makes me want to get my hands dirty again (haven't sculpted in several years). Modelling on a computer is awesome (especially undo:)) but of course it's not nearly as tactile as pushung actual mud around. Love it!

Sure. I do this in two ways. First is to use a heat gun and bake small areas of a model as I work. A good example of this would be building up layers of hair. Lay down a section of hair and work it with the relevant tools. When you are happy use the heat gun to harden that area. Then lay the next section of hair over the top, heat again and carry on... as far as I am aware you can keep on re-heating Sculpey over and over again (I do and get away with it). I used this method on my War Troll (http://www.southerngfx.co.uk/general/tutorials/sculpture2/sculpture.htm) :
The second way is to bake the finished model off in and oven, let it cool, work on it with more Sculpey and re-bake the whole thing again. I also do this and haven't ruined anything yet.
2.over baking can lead to scorching the sculpey?
The watch outs are of course scorching with both the heat gun and the oven. In my fist few goes with a heat gun I did indeed burn/scorch parts of the model. If this happens I use a dremel tool to remove the blackened Sculpey and rework that area. Now I am ery careful with the gun and always keep it moving over the surface to stop too much heat building up in one area.
3.which can let off hazardous fumes (true?)
Dont know but, this is on the teachers page at sculpey.com `No kiln required - bakes at 275° F (135° C) in a standard oven or toaster oven`and if there is a FUME problem they should be warning the Teachers and I would have thought or there would be a fair few Class action cases in progress right now (excuse the pun). I do try to keep the fumes to a minimum just in case (door open and an extractor). Maybe someone (perhaps a friendly passing Chemist) could give us the correct answer to this question.

Both really. I started mixing my clays after reading a tutorial by Pete Konig and once I'd tried it I just carried on experimenting. I like to work in Grey now made up of 1lb of Super Sculpey+56G White Sculpey III+56G Black Sculpey III. I find it softer and more pliable than straight SS. I sometimes throw in a 56G of Green for fun. Your preference really. I recently got a load of Premo sent to me instead of Sculpey III and that seems to work well to.

AiPH: Yeah, I wanted to use the Horns, nostrils, eyes and ears but the Rancor side seemed to win over. Must have been the force :).

Mr Southern ......well done,a very well done.Its nice to see my pasta machine in there.its so great!
Also your tools are great,i am lucky to have hand made customised tools made for me by my best mate Graham who owns a engineering metal company,and the good news for me is that he bought a very special lathe machine for the company and as soon as he told be what it can do i nearly fell on my face......It does METAL 3d Prototypeing.
Graham knows im working on my 5 Oz characters, and i said if i make a Wizard of Oz base`s inside Maya he d make it...and he said yep.
So i have got the witch ,lion,scarecrow, up to finishing/detail stage so just on tinman, & leaveing her till last,pretty scary she is....then i will post ,whether the base is made or not.
I work full time outside the industry so i do this as my batman alter ego at night.
Also just purchessed the z brush as the whole point of the modeling was to get all 5 into maya for animation,and going to buy zvids for my birthday in jan to give me a quick start.

What really gets me is that these sculptures can't be animated! This rocks! I'm wondering though wether you should've posted it in a concept art or 3d forum! But that might be that I'm jealous.
btw, why don't you do this as a profession. All big budget hollywood films first model their creatures like you do, then they paint them and then they digitize them. Big money there!
edit: oh I see, those ZBrush pics are yours. I thought you didn't work digitally.
