View Full Version : Freakshow, Romain Côte (3D)
Name: Romain Côte
Software: Maya, mental ray, Photoshop
I've been of this picture quite a while during my evenings afer work, little by little.
I was inspired by a lot of stuff, mainly real old freakshows and films like "Elephant man" or "Freaks". Also old a global london/paris 1900 mood.
That's the first time I really use mental ray for a finished work with a traditionnal lighting.
I tried to get a "nice" mood, atmosphere.
Comments are welcome. Thanks for the feedback!

WOW!!! Excelent work, I like the style, very worked render yes. Congratulations.
Four stars for me.

I love this! :D (front page plug for you)
I think you really captured the mood so well, and the intriguing idea of what lies beyond that "Freaks" sign. This little guy is suitably creepy yet endearing at the same time, and I really like the slightly stylised look you went for - it has a wonderful painterly look to it. Nice lighting and textures too.
Really lovely work - you should submit this for Expose' 3

Que dire? .... bravo!!
12-20-2004, 04:10 PM
Nice work, you did well with the atmosphere. Maybe you could push the expression on your character, specially his mouth could express a bit more dark mystirius feel. Also more inviting just as his whole body posture. For the rest it's great, really nice rendering too.
I wonder how you did your bird, it looks great, really nice hard feather feel to it.
12-20-2004, 04:16 PM
great work toce!

12-20-2004, 04:44 PM
I'm not so much in love with the character, but the background, the overall mood of the rendering is great - nice work!
12-20-2004, 04:50 PM
Very nice work, i like the side lighting... that's what gives the great power of the image i think...
Nice details also, irregular shapes of the corrugated iron... c'est super, bravo
dude, great job
i like the dust texture around the lamp.. is that in maya or an after effects?
12-20-2004, 04:57 PM

12-20-2004, 09:13 PM
This image should prompt a motion picture offer or at least a childrens animated TV movie. Wonderful!
Thanks for all the enthusiastic replies! I'll try to answer all your questions..
Leigh >> wow, thank you lady, you really understood what I tried to put in that character.. some sort of ambiguity.. I'm glad you caught that :)
Roman >> I wanted to have something inbetween for the expression, so you can't really tell what he's thinking, not something too obvious, but slightly disturbing.
The bird model is quite simple: basic body shape, I modeled 2 or 3 kind of feather and I spread them over the body one by one (erg, who said I'm sick? ;) ) That's pretty boring but that s the best way to have good control on the overall feathers.
Dezz >> same as roman
sonn >> I ve a textured fog out of maya, but I added some more texture in photoshop, slightly...
Denizz >> I just went back home and my site seems to be working, but obviously it has been hacked during most of the day :S Damn... too bad that kind of things happen more and more often these days... I assume the problem were solved by my domain provider.. Sorry for that, it's working now!
michel >> hey dude, glad you like it. You know, I know you know that I know.. See you soon I hope. go back to work now! ;)
pascal >> hey, it's always a great honor to get a crit from you, you know I've got a lot of respect for your work.
ja3d, OZ, zuliban, and everyone.. >> Thank you all guys!
Here is the character model: (more details to come if you re interested in)
and merry christmas and a happy new year everybody :D

Is there a "clin d'oeil" here?
12-20-2004, 11:26 PM
Very nice and refreshing work.
I'm not sure i like the yellow splotch in his right hand though, but other than that, can't find anything I don't like about it.
Lovingly crafted piece for sure. Great work. :)
12-20-2004, 11:34 PM

Excellent work, great style. :)
Riddick >> someone else already told me about "carnivale", but I don't know the show... So I guess it'spure coincidence :)

Bonne continuation et vivement les images futur...
12-21-2004, 06:33 PM
Great mood and atmosphere! Will there be other images/animation with this character and the Freak show? Is there a story behind the image? I want to see more!
12-21-2004, 06:50 PM
Thank you for showing us the artwork. It's very nice, although it does suffer because of the dead expression on his face. The absolutely neutral position of all elements of the face, including the thousand-yard stare (eyes straight ahead seeming to peer at nothing) prevent it from becoming exceptional.
He's walking down steps, so why not tilt his head down slightly and aim his eyes down, too. Raise an eyebrow and add a smirk to create a sense of whimsy to his expression. If he's supposed to be greeting someone who is approaching the Freakshow, then give him a sense of action and purpose by leaning his body forward a touch, cock his head to the side a bit....
Basically, do something that helps to propel the character and the image's story forward.
An excellent start, but separate yourself from the 95% of character-based images and add more life to the already wonderfully modeled gentleman.
Keep it up, and show us more!
12-21-2004, 08:51 PM
Donc Well done !!
See you laitière..
And now in english, por favor :
Hey Romain, Excel modeling and beautiful returned matters...The bird is chelou but I imagine that it is desired and your composition misses a little air has my taste but finally environment is a little claustrophobic that sticks rather well to the topic of Freakshow; Thus Well done!! Dairy See you.
12-21-2004, 09:55 PM
Woah excellent. I love the lighting and atmos of this piece. The character has great proportions. Sounds wierd but the bit i like th best is the detail on the hand. Well done Bud!
once again, thank you all!
Gentrifier >> thanks for the very good feedback and crits! I must say you are totaly right in what you said. even if I gave him down eyebrow, etc. I should have push it further...
madart >> I've no plan on this rght now but a lot of elements in this pictures are really "reccurent" in my own universe, what I like, what is inspiring me. So you might find some of it in future works. Keep your eyes wide open ;)
someone asked if I modeled it poly by poly? I don't really understand... what do you mean? the hand, the character, the whole scene? The character (including the hand) is full poly (except hairs) and yes it's modeled poly by poly (starting from primitives like a cube).
here you go for the clothes wire:
Bien joué Toce !
j'avais vu ton screen sur ton site l'autre jour, on recent bien l'univers de FREAKS dans ton boulot!

12-22-2004, 10:25 PM
kinda reminds me of the creepy fat italian guy from pinoccio...but not really...
12-23-2004, 01:32 AM
i kind of know what you mean, he does have a stromboli-esque feel to him but I personally feel that the whole scene reminds me SO MUCH of the movie the Elephant Man....which was one of the best movies i've ever seen. This guy is going to go far, if he hasn't already.
Excellent work, I love the lighting, mental ray is powerful... your work motivates me to experiment :)

"The freaks come out.." :)
Great concept! I really like it alot. It's amongst my latest favourite ones!
Just a few remarks, I think the textures could be worked out a little bit more, to add a more noisy and grungy effect, maybe add some more detailed bump maps, especially in the wooden caravan door and the guy's coat.
And I would also like to see some more detail -as far as geometry is concerned- in the bird's face. the mesh looks rather simplistic as it is now.
12-27-2004, 09:45 AM
Hey Toce, grosse progression. J'ai essaye de te joindre dernierement.
Passe moi un coup de fil.

Oh, belle image M'sieur Romain !
01-05-2005, 06:22 AM
heh the midget's face resembles your chicken avatar quite a bit
01-06-2005, 09:12 AM
Ambience dreadful, a lot of details,
01-07-2005, 05:35 PM
Absoulutely amazing! I think your attention to detail, and great scene framing is what truely makes the rendering. Your textures and lighting are almost flawless. The only critique I could give has already been given. Maybe there sould be more of an evil and ezaggerated expression on the mans face. Maybe an evil grin with the moutn slightly open and pursed.
Still absolutely amazing!
01-11-2005, 02:31 AM
Very nice render. I love the freakshow attitude.
This still looks very...what am I thinking...Clay Figure...The render attributes remind me of stop motion clay stuff...very cool.
01-14-2005, 06:24 AM

is a real accomplishment.

Would love to see it animated.

I want to see the freaks now. A convincing image.Good stuff.
it is really good...
04-01-2005, 02:16 PM
Brilliant piece of work. Great composition [the subject title "Freakshow" is wonderfully enhanced by clever use of tilt on the final camera angle - well done]. I love the background. Just enough to tell the viewer this might be Paris or it could be London...or round the corner from your house [very clever illusion]. The man and the bird [is it a raven?] both being darkly comic add greatly to just how freaky the show inside the caravan will be. And then the van itself - what a beautiful piece of work. I love ornate work like this and it must have taken you ages to model, assemble, paint and get just right. Best of all is definitely the coaching lamp. Fabulous stuff. Such a clever composition. I don't think you need to change the position of the man at all. The wares he has on show inside the caravan will be seedy, badly lit and definitely iffy...his slightly hesitant stance shouts all of this to perfection and yet we still want to see inside - and that lamp is so bright it's doing the inviting all on its own.
Fabulous stuff. * * * * * :applause:
Can we have a look inside now please ? ? ? ?
09-26-2005, 06:04 AM
