View Full Version : Modelling detail that goes against the loops?

Hi all,
I was just wondering how you guys go about modelling detail that cuts through your edge loops, for example a scar going diagonally across a face? (Lets assume it has to be modelled and you can't use a bump map. Or a normal map.)
I think I would be inclined to just model in the detail and to hell with the loops and hope it looks ok when it deforms, but I also thought maybe you could make the detail the centre of another loop and merge it in with the others that way?
Any ideas?

Edge loops are not a holy religion.. they can be cut, slit or even torn appart.

If you use some sort of mesh knife tool, you can build up the needed detail on top of the edgle loop, so you are cuting it without actually disrupting it.

Try a displacment map, draw it out in photoshop or a similar program just the way you want it.
