Title: Boulderdash
Name: Pascal Blanché
Country: Canada
Software: 3ds max

yet another illustration..
This one was inspired by one of the greec mythology characters: Sisyphus.. but i find out that it was a tittle a bit to intellectual, so i remembered this old video game you know, you push the rock and.. anyway ;)
done with max and vray, touch ups (lots of) with photoshop
(retouched version)

12-14-2004, 07:12 AM
Cool, I like how all the colors look a little bit faded.

Lol, I remember boulderdash :D

12-14-2004, 07:12 AM
Pascal, you never cease to amaze me. Another fantastic piece!
Nothing to crit.

Love the composition, lighting, modeling, the painterly feel you accomplished, and of course the somewhat modern take on an old bit of mythology. bits of industry and technology in there.

Great all around, I'd love to see a higher res version, and of course the obligatory wire!

Keep up the great work!

12-14-2004, 07:26 AM
I love it! Amazing modeling. The only thing I would say is that I wish the boulder was more metalic looking because right now it kind of blends in with the look of the character. A metalic heavy looking boulder would only make this image better.

Good job!

12-14-2004, 07:48 AM
One another great modelling and render for this scene, i like the character' pose:thumbsup: .

12-14-2004, 08:53 AM
It's so good, i'm speechless. Well, almost speechless. :)
Your render is so hammered and ciseled that it doesn't look 3D. Only remains your art, no medium any more. Impressive !
Only thing, i can see to be improved is the right foot. It seems too small and abnormal from this point of view, but that's nitpicking...
Oh, wait, i ear them coming : the zillion posts and the usual frontpage plug. Doesn't matter for it's well deserved
Bravo l'artiste !

12-14-2004, 09:24 AM
j'aime beaucoup l'idée:thumbsup:

12-14-2004, 09:56 AM
Another amazing image! I don't get what he's doing, but its awesome anyways...1 crit, the right foot(char right) looks really flat from that angle, I'm sure its how its supposed to be, but it feels like he doesn't really have a grip with it, or that its not there or something weird...The atmosphere is really nice as well.

12-14-2004, 10:13 AM
Very nice!

It's funny you should mention Sisyphus, as soon as I saw the picture I thought of the episode of Ulyesses 31 where Sisyphus would be eternally breaking apart giant balls of metal parts.

Stylistically the image lovely, but I think it would have been good to have a bit more texture to the 'ball', it looks oddly clean.

12-14-2004, 01:01 PM
yup right.. I finished it at two in the morning and now i see it again I totally agree, ill work a bit on the speculars/textures on it ;)

12-14-2004, 01:12 PM
another master piece~~~
your art is really great..........
and yea.....the "ball" can be more textured:thumbsup:

12-14-2004, 04:27 PM
excellent work! the modeling this perfect one, maybe shader metallic in the "big ball" would be good... congrats dude! see it:thumbsup:

12-14-2004, 05:19 PM
WOW :eek::eek:,can really feel the weight:eek::eek:

12-14-2004, 07:28 PM

12-14-2004, 08:13 PM
thx M@lonet, if only i had half the patience you have to create believable mechanics ;)
fait beau en france?

12-14-2004, 09:18 PM
Great as usual, maybe color variation and rust in mechanical piece would make more incredible this one

12-14-2004, 10:10 PM
Great work, i love your style. Are you related to John Blanche? aka real creator of 40k universe.

12-14-2004, 10:12 PM
I think it could use more textures, more depth.a touch at least. But still forget about that.Because it is really a super piece, really cool, and has a special look.Great work. :buttrock:

12-15-2004, 08:45 AM

Comme toujours!! bien fait, équilibré, juste ce qu'il faut... un doute !! Il va faire quoi avec toute

The lack of texturing gives the image an impressionistic quality that I personally like. Outstanding work. Like AJ_23 it reminds me of an episode of the cartoon Ulysses. Could we see a version of the image before photoshop work?

12-15-2004, 12:15 PM

A little too faded I think but it gives a really unique mood to your pic ;)

I always love your work. I can recognize your style anywhere I see it.

12-15-2004, 11:07 PM
Looks Great!

The torso is especially impressive! There is somehting about the foot that seems skinny though. The line above the end of the pants seems oddly parallel. That said, I love all the crap falling off the hunk of metal. oh and it would be neet to see his hands really squeezing the metal like it was fleshy.

Neat stuff,

12-15-2004, 11:12 PM
Yup, Nice indeed...

On thing which immediatly caught my eye. His right foot look wierd. It seem out of proportion, like he had a really really tiny foot.
I realize there is a perspective issue here, which makes it look small. But it still drags my attention.

His eyes (or lack off) also draws my attention. Maybe a very small highlight in one of them might help it, you know? right now they look very dark, almost hollow.

And while we are at it. His right forarm is missing some "flow" . The shape of it gets lost in a series of bumps...

hope it helps.

Keep it up ! your a source of inspiration for many if not ALL of us ....

12-15-2004, 11:27 PM
youve done a great job yet again, im a really big fan of your work.

12-15-2004, 11:37 PM
toujours aussi bon, et la cadence augmente :)

T'as jamais pensé à faire un jeu de tarot ou un truc dans le genre, ton style conviendrait bien et je pourrais frimer avec mon jeu de cartes pascal blanche ;)

woot woot, cool, like the engine part and the interaction of flesh and mechanicals. nice work, maybe missing some litle detail and the face, but is just my point of view.

12-16-2004, 12:30 AM
Alow me to ask much of your images is completed in post.....or are the layers of fog and ambience added in another way....

12-16-2004, 12:47 AM

12-16-2004, 01:51 AM
Man, AGAIN, I saw the thumbnail and thought: No way, Pascal did another awesome illustration? And I was right, it is you yet again! :scream:

It's wonderful! Reminds me a bit of Baron Prasil's Adventures (if you know what I'm talking about), mainly because of the film adaptation that was done after the more famous book. I didn't play and don't know the game you refer to unfortunately, but nevertheless, it's a very beutiful piece of art (yet again) Without any more worhtless crap, from me :buttrock::D

12-16-2004, 02:48 AM
Great piece of work. When can we buy a copy of your next concept design book?

12-16-2004, 05:12 PM
Great as usual (it's becoming boring, do some horrible stuff next time :hmm: )
This kind of work push you to take your skill higher ^_^.

One critic, maybe the shoot should be more larger. The character of this myth is suppose to be alone in the desert, doomed to carry rocks for ever. A more larger shoot will put that impression of loneliness.

12-16-2004, 05:59 PM
WoW. Awsome. You are a very pacient man to model all that stuff, Very Good Indeed!!

12-16-2004, 07:27 PM
Damn dude... some guys have it all... skills, creativity, style... awesome, just as usual.

12-16-2004, 07:37 PM
after reading some other comments... especially one where someone said something about some "weird bumps and reliefs" on the model arms and other areas... well, I dunno if it's the point here... but those lil "imperfections" do give more style to the picture... I really like it.. at a point I was even wondering if it was a real clay model.... those are exactly the kinda bumps you get when you roughly smooth the surface of clay when sculpting. so once again... awesome!

12-16-2004, 07:49 PM
watch out double post! :P

yest thx for the comments about inperfections.
and if I even manage one day to make the perfect pict, there would be no challenge anymore right? ;)

12-16-2004, 07:50 PM
watch out double post! :P

yest thx for the comments about inperfections.

Fantastic 3d and 2d. Really has that special feeling. Only thing is, that it seems he has a huge nut-sack..

12-16-2004, 11:11 PM

12-17-2004, 10:08 AM
Great work. I love the mechenical artefact sense. Just to say something, maybe I think that the plates of the man shold be a bit more metalic. Beautiful scene anyway.

12-17-2004, 03:49 PM

12-19-2004, 04:38 AM
very wild and beautiful piece of work pascal.......Intensity and vivid.a striking pose and a beautiful pallette of shades.........I think i recall you are a great fan of "Brom".......It shows in your work.......I think you have this kind of mood and style with a surreal effect, but still keeping it your own.........I think,in fact I am sure when or if he (Brom) looks at your art he is also a great fan of your work as's always a wonderful thing to see your work, very unique and special in all regards........:arteest:

12-19-2004, 06:07 AM
Nice piece, Would lie to see some Wires though. Great rendition of Sysiphus.

12-20-2004, 01:45 AM
Grat work, your always gets at the same time very balanced and dynamic compositions, I can feel the weight and the force of Sisifo, many years ago I read "the myth of sisyphus" by Albert Camus and it impressed me. I like your version as well, congratulations!!

12-20-2004, 07:50 AM
Cool idea! Great pose, lovely render! Boulderdash, an image based on the old C64 game? :)
Keep it up!

12-20-2004, 08:14 AM
Beautiful, big hands. I love them very much.

Little, ugly feet (must be big... yes very big).

And also,
as a photographic side, model must be put in the left of the frame. Not center. Give the other side more space to the mountains at the background.

And so, "for me" the best of ever you h ave made.

12-20-2004, 09:58 AM
I love your stuff, I wanna see more!!!

12-20-2004, 10:34 AM
