View Full Version : MINI CHALLENGE: 20 awsome Cyborgs, waiting to be modelled

Pages : [1] 2

Hello CGtalkies,

In an attempt to stimulate some more collaborations between the cgtalkies, we are having a little experiment on an Across-the-Board Mini Challenge. This has nothing to do with the official challenges at all BTW.
Here's the original 2D Concept Challenge. (

This is the thing:
- Pick the concept you find most interesting and model the thing.
- Do you want to texture it aswell? Please do and make us happy! But it’s optional.
- This is a collaboration thread, so discuss your entrie with the concepter.
- Whatever you do with the model/render etc., don’t credit yourself for the concept. The concepter gets the credits for that. And the modeller will allways get the concepter’s credit for the model offcourse.

Some things to keep it all pleasant:
- Use your common sense. Doubles are not a problem, but please don’t give us 20 times the same concept modelled.
- We do not wish to see the forums filled with cyborgs. So post everything about your entrie in THIS exact thread! If you choose not to, your thread will get terminated without any mercy!
- This might become a very long thread, so try to limit your amount of WIPs and cheers to keep it all readable.
- Rules are not open for negotiation. This is it. Resistance is futile.

Have fun! Let the modelling begin... jeroentje

We would appreciate it if you could host your piece from a server.
For free hosting places check out , , . (Links to) free upload software can be found there aswell and also at Or do a search in your favorite search engine. When attaching is your only option: so be it.

08 August 2002, 04:12 AM
here is my concept Jeroentje (I've finally found some free time to do it!!) ;) !

Hope you will like this Cyborg guys.

09 September 2002, 04:46 AM
Soooo, I did it as far as the conceptual stage, ala Craig Mullins (I thank him 1000 times a day!), rather rough, but about as finished as you'll get from me on Laborday Weekend

Thanks that was a great break from the many projects that are due this week, thanks again and I look forward to the next one.

09 September 2002, 05:34 PM
Here's my cyborg. The old ver. got lost in the server crash. (I hope I still get one update:D) It's still pretty messy, but I think it's coming along. I hope it meets everyone's standards.btw tell me if it's too big.

09 September 2002, 09:44 PM
Good start Cockofthewok, but it might be hard for a modeler to understand all the shapes of him in that stance.

Here's my entry. I was trying to think of an interesting way to combine man and machine, and I remembered a very old sketch I drew... could be 6-8 years old. It's always been one of my favourites, and the characters are perfect for a cyborg idea.

Here's a link to the old original scene called "PLiGhT of The SPiDER PEoPLE":

It's a poor scan, and I'm not sure where the original is now, but you get the idea.

Here's the current concept:

09 September 2002, 12:21 AM
hi guys....
i've made this a long time ago....this is a main character of a short story i wrote (it's about a.i. and so....and the bad bad mankind that robbed the planet and such stuff!)
it's not the best drawing....but i hope you like it

09 September 2002, 11:35 AM
ups...i guess i didn't read your posts much carefully! sorry!
so i think i'll post some pics later!

waiting for your work jeroentje!

and for now this one....

09 September 2002, 11:46 AM
Oh what the hell... here she is, it's been finished for days.

I tried to keep a bit of 1930/40's feeling in it and used oldfashioned switches and buttons. Texture should be brown leather like them old double winged flying machine pilots.
I overdid it a bit in the rendering maybe, but I loved the piece and lost myself in detailing. Not really necessairy for the challenge, but I thought maybe some nice info for a modeller.

09 September 2002, 03:46 PM
Here's my first concept. (surely we can post 2-3?)
I'll use my "2nd allowed post" for a cleaner and colored version if I have time.

09 September 2002, 12:38 PM
Here is one from me!

09 September 2002, 02:12 AM
ok, well... I suppose I'll give it a go......

I did this drawing a while ago... it's a finished peice.... I really like drawing but I'm learning 3d now so I haven't really had time to make any "pictures"... mostly sketches.... I blurred the BG so that the character is easier to see....... I'm actually curious to hear what people think of this peice actually.....

09 September 2002, 04:09 PM

09 September 2002, 05:18 PM
My concept:D

09 September 2002, 01:35 AM
Lot's of cool entrees. Here be mine...

female cyborg - back view - and some smoke :)

09 September 2002, 11:10 AM
This is my cyborg, a sort of cyborgcop of the future, he can´t kiss, but can caress.

I went for a comic style, but i can´t get the happy result, so i just applied a bunch of filters. If anyone wants to color it i´ve got the bigger size sketch and the inked linedraw in ps6.

09 September 2002, 06:47 PM
hi everyone,

i have heard a lot talk about cgtalk. it's said to be the best online community, dunno wether you know that ;)
anyways, this is a very cool thread and a nice place for a debut, i thought. allthough i have to admit that i'm not a great drawer. but hey, who cares.

here's mine:
pretty unfinished as you can see. but it's a concept.
hope you like, comments welcome

Stauder for everyone!
edit: Grolsch for jeroentje ;)

09 September 2002, 01:07 AM
Well, I'm not much of a tech artist (I usually do soft and squishies) so feel free to take some liberties with the design when modelling. Can't wait to see how these turn out in 3D.

If someone does this in Maya I wouldn't mind getting a copy of the file so I can try some animations with it. I'm not really a modeller  Have fun and let me know if you need anything for the modelling process.

09 September 2002, 08:48 AM
Here's my entrie!
Didn't really get those copper parts right,i find metal difficult to draw. But if anyone should chose to model this, metal shouldn't be a problem :)

Kirt: i love your concept,it's kind of a parodie on those aibo dogs.
Jeroentje: good idea for a thread ,keep those coming ,i'll try to keep on joining them. "gefeliciteerd "on the mod-job by the way.
sleepless:looking forward to your colored version.i'm a fan of your work!

09 September 2002, 09:56 AM
And here's my entry, based on one of my younger brother's... er... visions.

If anyone should want to model this... I'm sorry, but I don't think I'll have any time to refine and/or discuss the design. :(

09 September 2002, 07:26 PM
a super quicky.

09 September 2002, 03:52 AM
ok, here is my late entry

09 September 2002, 07:10 PM
EvilDan- beautiful in it's simplicity.
Kirt- Another great idea, and different approach.
Way to go everyone!

Tightened up my sketch some, pity the fool who tries to model this "inexact" drawing. I suck at mecha stuff, better go study up for the next few years. LOL. For what it's worth....

09 September 2002, 02:49 PM
Hi everybody...
I saw all these great concepts of your cybeorgs and was astonished to see all those different forms.. That gave me quite a boost so I've desided to make some of form research for my self..

Well My cyborg is not humanoid.. But, it is a combination of organics and "hardware" ... In other words it's an enchanced Jellyfish...

Hope you like it :wavey:

09 September 2002, 08:02 AM
So these are the concepts... Let the modelling begin!
Don't forget to read this ( first, and have fun.

jeroentje, your 2D moderator.

Very imporatant: everything in THIS thread please!

09 September 2002, 01:10 PM
yeah've very great ideas to give these forum more live as it has already!
i think it would be great to see some of these great concepts modelled by one of the 3d guys! i would take part but my box is still rendering so i've no abillity to model!

so i hope when i come back to check some updates there would be some very interesting things to see!

09 September 2002, 07:08 PM
Howdy all, Haven't posted much but I couldn't resist trying this little challenge. Here's a lunchtimes worth of work on slackers cyborg concept. More as I get round to it...

Comments welcome,

09 September 2002, 08:07 PM
this is very cool :) i am not sure to pick art7sayan ,or m@ ,or jorngete ,m@ looks very hard :P
anyways i will attempt ot make art7sayan's i think ,cuz its very cool ,and not as scary as m@ :P
ill try to finish :)

09 September 2002, 10:54 PM
Great start, keept it up!

I must say, this mini-challenge has some great potential.

wow... I am in your sig?

09 September 2002, 07:19 AM
Great idea for a mini-challenge! I decided to start modeling art7sayan's cool cyborg concept. Here's where I'm at right now, slowly making the basic shapes, lots more to model :bounce:

One thing I'm wondering though, could you draw us a rear view of your concept Art7sayan? I'm not sure what happens to those chest tubes when they loop around to the back. Thanks :)

ps. The same goes for almost all the other concepts, could we get more viewpoints of the concepts? It's a bit difficult modeling with just one viewpoint when we don't know what the other side looks like :p

09 September 2002, 07:44 AM
Hey folks,

Tim Lee (Sleepless) was nice enough to let me model his business-cyborg. I'm going to try to stick with the style of his original drawing and use the same tonal qualities he uses in his other illustrations.

I might even take a crack at using cloth for his suit....maybe....:hmm:

Here is the reference pic:

I'll post the humble beginnings soon....

09 September 2002, 11:19 AM
this is one of the coolest idea ive ever seen, i cant wait to see more of these way to much talent flowing around here hehe,

09 September 2002, 11:34 AM
I started with evildan's concept. only the head so far.

EvilDan Cyborg Concept (

09 September 2002, 02:47 PM
@ jeroentje

lol, I'm afriad it wasn't my sig. just part of the message. However, for the low low price of $19.95 it could be.

Cheers.

09 September 2002, 04:57 PM
Hey, this thread is goin' to be awesome!!

Great start mattam! Yes of course I will send you the other views of my cyborg as soon as I will find some spare time!(to Wiz too)...
I guess it's because it was a "concept challenge" that you can't find some model sheet of those cyborg here! Just private mail the artist who made the concept to have the other views ;)

"Keep it up guys!"

09 September 2002, 06:52 PM
Mechanical arms & legs, cybernetic laser guided eyeballs, bioenginiered built with nanotechnology muscules,... What else a cyborg could ever want to

Keep it up guys... Build us a better cyborgs of da future

09 September 2002, 07:51 PM
Back again. All looking great guys, here's another little lunchtime update for you all.

I've just got some more sketches from Slacker which shed some light on her front, so I'll try to get some of that done tomorrow. Just wish I more time to spend on her.

more soon.

09 September 2002, 02:36 AM
Looking good Vodkaboy.

I kind of got a little carried away with the updates here, but I hope you like them...

(the cyborg parts would be the things grafted to her arms. :) )

09 September 2002, 02:40 AM
oh, and the male version...

09 September 2002, 11:55 AM
OK, here's my first modeling submission:

I'm modeling with NURBS in Maya at the moment. I'll do his face and the fleshy parts of his anatomy with polygons. I'll probably redo the wheel well thing. The textures, of course, are just dummy colors.

from this image:

09 September 2002, 12:38 PM
OK, I changed the hub, or whatever it's called. I like this one much better. I must've had my head up my butt to think the other one was any good. I guess modeling at 4:30 in the morning will do that to you. Anyway, here it is:

09 September 2002, 01:53 PM
count me in on this one . . .

gonna do evilDan's concept as well :D

09 September 2002, 05:25 PM
I was wondering how this collaberation was coming along.... I haven't been around for a while.... lots of nice stuff... Can't wait to see some final results....... anyone interested in other views of my concept, lemme know.....

Here's the original sketch.....

09 September 2002, 12:47 PM
Just ran across this thread. It looks like fun. So many great concepts, so little time to model. Now I'll have to figure out which one to start on.

09 September 2002, 03:33 PM
hope you enjoy

putting on a art show in LOS ANGELES sept 21 called NOT YET REALIZED, i will be showcaseing art like this. if you like to know more about the show check out the site at:

thought i'd have a go at modelling roel's cyborg...i'm kinda lovin' this concept cause it reminds me of the characters in metal-slg on the neo geo - outstanding drawing!

roel: i read your post , and it sounded like you didn't have time to discuss this design, so i hope you don't mind that i have gone ahead and started to model it ;) hope you like it so far, and that i have done it justice, your c+c are more than welcome of course

6 hours modelling so far - 2283 polys

updates to come

miss sono xxx

p.s - it's an animated gif

09 September 2002, 08:05 PM
i like ur model just try to do not it simmetrical..try to do some different ( a bit, but enough to be different) side for side

09 September 2002, 04:27 AM
I like this challenge a lot!!! Im in :) I decided to model GUYJINs concept. That one look like it is really hard and fun to do. I just saw this thread today so this is what I got so far. I'm not big on posting too much progress so I wont post for a while.

09 September 2002, 06:25 AM
Miss Sono: excellent work! But as Carlocki said, a few small differences between the left and right sides would be an improvement. I guess I have no choice now but to try to get some additional sketches done, have I?

miss sono
09 September 2002, 09:53 AM
hey roel good to hear from you ;) yeah, i agree, i think its time to add some subtle differences to each side, but some additional sketches would be good...especially from the back :)

09 September 2002, 08:02 PM

I wanna join, eventhough i'm not good @ 3d (yet) i'm gonna try it!!!! I love the design of guyjin and art7sayan soooooo fine!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm gonna try this definately !!!!

Here is a higher resolution pic of the cyborg along with ahead close up and a profile. I fear the higher rez wont help much due to the way it was drawn. To tell you guys the truth I had no idea the were to be modeled by the forum members :) That's what i get for not reading carefully. Anyway, I hope they help. Even better just go with what you think its cool, as long as you go for the overall feel of the pic it's all good

09 September 2002, 01:47 AM
OK, it's still slow going (multitask, multitask!), but I've worked a bit on the generator, with nurnies and wiring to follow.
Next up for me is to rough out the upper torso and start working on the cloth sim. I've never worked much with Maya Cloth, so I'll let you know how that goes and maybe show some of my experimentation.

One of Tim's paintings of this guy had a bit different flexible piece between upper torso and generator. It was more of a metal skirt. I think I'm going to combine the metal skirt with the springy things I have now. It'll also help the cloth sim, I think, to have those shapes as buffers.

Here's the latest (without textures, of course):

Back to work.....

09 September 2002, 05:48 AM

Here's my first WIP of one of the drawings. There is still a lot of work. I'm not happy with the breasts (need to fall to side more) and there is some weird geometry at the waist I need to clear up, but it is close enough to post as a first WIP.

I'll probably start making and attching the props/nernies/doodads sometime tomorrow. The hair will most likely be last thing I do (I hate modling hair! )

Question: Should I make the eyes larger and go for more of the fantasy look from the drawing, or should I keep them real sized like they are now ?

09 September 2002, 07:11 AM
He slaugters, nice start.
My first overall impression is that she looks a bit too skinny.
Looking forward to the update.

09 September 2002, 08:14 PM
My start on EvilDan's concept :D
thx for the new pics dan, really helpfull to see what ya had in mind . . .

The yellow cloth is just basic form ofcourse, needs wrinkles and stuff . . . head needs some tweaking too . . .
Enjoying this one tho

[UPDATED] see below

09 September 2002, 08:29 PM
evildan thank for the details. I think I'm just gonna go for the overall feel I got from the first pic I saw. When I get bac to my workstation on monday I'll post an update I've been using the head for some facial animation tests.

Equinoxx: great start!

09 September 2002, 09:11 PM
Here's the updated cyborg wip:

It's still mostly just blocking out the shapes, but I've started to add in a few more of the details like those airfilters (?) and also the curves on his Leg armor. I think it's almost time to model his poor left arm. Then after that, I need to work on the armor some more. So many pieces!

Equinoxx : nice one! I like the eyebrow/nose wrinkle especially.

Stan : Good work, I would probably go with the larger fantasy eyes :surprised

AcFred : lookin good, although in his drawing, the wheel looks less wide?

EvilDan : wooooo! :buttrock: Love the extra views  It really helps us see what the character is like better.

miss sono : Looking forward to seeing it colored :)

09 September 2002, 09:41 PM

based on the new views evildan gave me/us i changed some things :D

everybody else, loving what you guys are doing to the 2d concepts as well

09 September 2002, 09:48 PM
Great jobs people! This is becoming excellent!
Beers for everyone

09 September 2002, 10:21 AM
Hey there, just thought I'd show the results of my first foray into Maya Cloth. I started the Maya cloth tutorials last night and spent most of today applying the techniques to the cyborg.

I'm not there yet. Right now the fabric looks more like sweatshirt material, but I'm going to start from scratch tomorrow with real sewing patterns to give me an authentic look.

The geometry of the shirt you're looking at now is actually not Maya Cloth, but an extruded duplicate that is driven by the cloth object using a Wrap Deformer. It really works well. I probably don't need to use this technique on the shirt since shirts are so thin anyway, but the coat is definitely getting this treatment.

Anyway, here it is:

More later.....

The Time Serpent
09 September 2002, 05:58 PM
i think of tryin Guyjin's cyborg too
ill post somethin later:wip:

09 September 2002, 10:17 PM
AC---looking good. I'm on pins and needles waiting for the update.

09 September 2002, 11:15 AM
I love Kirts cydog too funny, think I'll give it a go, excellent work being done here. Pics to follow

09 September 2002, 10:36 PM
here's my WIP of Guyjin's beauty - the model is still quite incomplete

09 September 2002, 07:15 AM
Yeah! Someone to model my dog! Thanks path! Can't wait to see how it turns out.

miss sono
09 September 2002, 10:51 PM
Update time, whilst waiting for some more artwork from roel (hint hint ;) ) The model remains as my first post, as I'm not going to change anything untill the extra drawings arrive. The only addition being the creature in the head

miss sono xxx

09 September 2002, 12:24 AM
I have desided to have a go at Guyjin's cyborg to, gotta love that design....

Guyjin: can you post some more views (If you have the time)...

09 September 2002, 12:47 AM
ACfred: Thats looking great can't wait to see more. I saw the demo for maya cloth and loved it.

Miss sono: nice renders. what the little embryo looking thing behind the glass?

I think so far everyone is doing a really good job I'm glad this thing got started up.

Errr, I agree, I'm way too slow. Truly sorry. This is just almost on top of my "to do" list, right after a few more pressing matters. God, I hate having to make excuses. :annoyed:

09 September 2002, 10:08 PM

Didn't get as much done as I wanted. But here it is so far:

Texture are preliminary and I still need to model the hair and Wrist Gun/Optical Site/Gadgets.

Any chance of getting a better image of the gadgets themselves ? Another question. Is there supposed to be a pair of glass goggles over the mask ?

P.S. I keep think "Mars" everytime I render this thing.

09 September 2002, 07:21 AM
Yes she has some kind of goggles.
I still think her boobs look pretty weird to be honest. A bit floppy.

btw, I think "mars" everytime my spaceship lands there.

09 September 2002, 04:41 PM
Noted: Boobs need to be less 30 year oldish and more 18 year oldish.

09 September 2002, 05:01 PM
my god, 11,112 views. this topic is quite on fire.

09 September 2002, 12:08 PM
Oooh no :( I was working on the robot of guyjin but my entire system crashed beyond repair. So I have lost everything.

:( :( Gonna restart on it now.

For Miss Sono and others. I kinda rushed them, but I hope they'll be of some use to you anyway. Happy modelling!

09 September 2002, 12:19 PM
The shoulders are supposed to be at even height, but I messed that up a bit. Sorry!

09 September 2002, 01:57 PM
slaughters: u caught the right mood i like the textile u give to the character suite

09 September 2002, 04:58 PM
i'm going to be modelling m@.'s cyborg, and matt (that's your real name, right?) could you post some more drawings of him? maybe from the rear or some other angles?

miss sono
09 September 2002, 05:53 PM
thanx roel, very much appreciated..i'll finish the modelling now, and get some textures done for it

miss sono xxx :bounce: :) :bounce:

09 September 2002, 12:43 AM
very nice sketch

09 September 2002, 05:54 AM
WOW miss sono, I love the renders. That toon shader is very beautiful. Good job.

10 October 2002, 08:45 AM
at first those tentacles scared the piss otta me, but my ego took over and i soon found myself modelling. anyways, im just roughing out the model.

good work to whoever drew this, i wish i could draw this well.

great challenge

10 October 2002, 08:53 AM
nice good choose!!
10 October 2002, 09:45 PM
i d love to participate in this contest. unfortunately all the cyborgs i like are being modelled by someone else.

this is why i am still looking for a cyborg that noone is modeling so far.

there is only one thing i demand. the 2d artist should want to cooperate with me. like providing me with detail sketches of specific parts of the body etc.

if you are interested contact me via email in order not to crowd this thread.

mail me (

10 October 2002, 12:23 AM
Hola! Hope I'm not too late here but I was gonna give a go at mars' concept ( since it doesn't appear to be in the works yet and it's pretty darn cool.

Mars, can you post any more angles? If not I can guestimate it but I figured it would be best to work from all the original. (front/side would be ideal) Thanks a lot! ;)

-edit, the front/side could be just plain lineart as well. I just need to get the idea what's going on, especially in the front

10 October 2002, 12:35 AM
i'am sorry i don't have other angles of it but here are some more ideas i did (

me and my partner just put on our first art show and it went off we had over 700 people show up the site for the show is (
check it out

enjoy and thanks to everyone who come out to the show

10 October 2002, 10:53 PM
Well, here's another update of my efforts so far:

The har is polygon hair and is kind of preliminary right now. The next thing I'll be doing is modeling the gadgets on her arm.

10 October 2002, 02:36 AM
Hey Slaughter,
Some good modeling though I have a few recommendations below:
(The changes I made are with the proportions and volume and some of the detail got smushed around so you can ignore that.)

10 October 2002, 04:06 AM
hey guy just came across the the challange how do you have left so i now if theres time to play around whit some of the art here

10 October 2002, 10:05 AM
every work...
every artist..
all incredible

10 October 2002, 04:47 AM
Hey all.. i am new to CGTalk, and to modeling really.. but i saw this thread and i am going to give the Meduza a try..

i've been playing around with it for a few hrs now and will have some pics up in a little bit.. i have decided to go full poly instead of the NURBS stuff i was doing..

so more later!

10 October 2002, 09:03 AM
total time thusfar 5 hrs,
# of polys - 5500

haven't finished the body, but i have most of the dome and skin modeled.. just have to tweak it..

(i dunno how to post pics on these forum types.. so it's only gonna show the one i U/L'd.. i hope..)

10 October 2002, 10:01 AM
basically a bump. i added mnore to my WIP. i ran into some problems when modelling the thigh parts of the legs, it didnt quite make sense when i put it into 3d. but i imporivesed, hope its no offense to the orginal artist. the spine was kinda tricky, i still need to werk on it.

here she is thus far:

hope for some C&C

10 October 2002, 01:10 PM
Hi.. again

Its nice to see that my sketch has also found it's way in to 3D... :applause:

I't a very nice start, drk_ghost, Hope to see more soon... I my self will try to show some other sides of the jelly fish, to show how I think it should look from the side...

10 October 2002, 01:28 PM

Drunkirishmic - I must say it's lookin good so far...... Thanks for chosing my design.... I know I wouldn't be able to do it right now.... not quite at that skill level yet....... feel free to make minor changes if it makes more sense, but it is looking very good so far.... I'm excited to see how far along it gets

I thought cyborg was short for "cybernetic organism". Therefore, mecha mixed with flesh, right?

Well, there's some flesh in there..... more mecha than flesh but there is flesh..... Lower arms and hands for instance.......

Drunkirishmic : Looks good...... thanks for chosing mine..... Very nice to see it in 3d Form..... what program did you use, by the way?

10 October 2002, 05:14 AM
max all the way. i just gone done learnin how to do mechanical forms so i figured i would take the challenge. man that thing threw me off a couple time and had to star whole sections over again. but i learned a lot form doin it. im happy with it. thanks

Hello again everyone. I've been a bit slack with the updates recently, bit busy with another project but here's where I left the model from Slackers concept...

and here's a head I've been working on, which I'm not too sure about.

Comments welcome.

10 October 2002, 12:47 AM
Kirt, I love your Sony Aibotron idea. I just don't think I've the skills to do it justice. I'm sure someone will take a whack at tit. It deserves a translation into 3d.

10 October 2002, 12:58 AM
@slaughters: you was doing a great job man. I apologize for not replying more frequently. I would love to see them gadgets modelled. But I think she'll look better without the hair ;)

@drunkirishmic: that model rocks drunkirishmic :buttrock:

@undoz: amazing work. You stayed close to the concept and still managed to surprise me with it. Great work :buttrock:

@Kirt: I love it even more than the first time. Very original concept. What more of a concept could a 3D-er wish for...
Nice markerlike render btw.

Cheers, jeroentje

10 October 2002, 09:36 AM
Hi all , this is my first tablet painting ! hope it's good enough!

here's my Cyborg concept ! it's little of everything ! a muscular can-man with organic arms connected with rest of the body with robocop influenced torso/pelvis region with some iron-muscles as legs , and on top of everything a pair of sneakers !

10 October 2002, 04:36 PM
KICK ASS Work Undoz!

Really GREAT to see some Romanian artists KICK ASS! :D

10 October 2002, 04:39 PM
Forgot to say!
The only thing that I don't like bout the char are the hands! U need more detail there!

10 October 2002, 11:57 PM
undoz : yeah! that's looking really nice. I'm impressed. I'd like to know if you stayed close to the orthos, and if not what you had to change ;) I'll post some sketches of the back if you want.

10 October 2002, 12:44 AM
:buttrock: undoz!!!
raul, nice to see u here too
and i have some drawings...anybody interested??? I would love to model them myself but I'm very busy at the wants some? :airguitar

10 October 2002, 12:50 AM

if you want more details ask...i also made a front view, side and other details...but that's just if anybody wants it...:airguitar

10 October 2002, 02:06 AM
btw undoz, I'd like to see other views of your model. And what program are you using?

10 October 2002, 03:28 AM
Hi, thanks for the comments :airguitar
m@., Your drawings are very good !:buttrock:
I tryed to stay close to the concept but I also like to work freehand :)
I'm working in 3ds max 5. Now I have to tweak the hands and smooth a little bit the edges of the body armour . I'll leave the back as it is because it won't show and I'm not planning to do a animation.
I'm not sure if I'll texture it .... I have no idea. :lightbulb

10 October 2002, 06:32 AM
Kirt, I love that Sony watch dog. I'll give it a go and hopefully create something worthy of the concept art. You'll just have to be a bit patient, it may be a week or so before I can get to work on it.

10 October 2002, 10:09 AM
Greets peeps,
Just another update. Pretty obvious what's still in the works.
Larger Pic (
erm Wireframe (
Got a couple proportion things to fix, a few pieces on the headress and the inside/bottom to finish. Should be done modeling shortly.

Nice stuff all!

10 October 2002, 10:36 AM
OK, I finally got back to Tim's cyborg. I started working on the character's head yesterday and am pretty close to being done with the modeling.

It's made with Sub-D's (my first!) in Maya. Textures are obviously just placeholders.

I'll have to do some research on creating blendshapes for sub-d.

Here it is:

More to come....

10 October 2002, 02:10 PM
Oh, here is where I am overall -- I just plopped the head onto the stuff I had worked on a few weeks ago.

The body is a medium-res solution used for cloth solving. Since it'll be covered up, I didn't go into too much detail or superb muscle placement. I just needed stuff in their ballpark so the cloth will move in a way appropriate to the body.

I also need to increase the size of the generator -- make it wider.

I'm starting the arms Saturday after I sit down and design some cool gadgets for those places in the original image that are a little sparse.

I've placed a tiny version of the original pic by Tim Lee so people can see where I am and where I'm going....

That's it. Sleepy time. I'm anxious to get an early start on this guy.

Comments and criticisms welcome.....make me better!

10 October 2002, 02:39 PM
undoz: nice. If you change your mind about the back here's a sketch:

10 October 2002, 03:37 AM
KMK - That would be great! I'm sure whatever you do will be better than what I could do in 3D. I can't wait to see this finally take shape. If you need any additional views let me know. I know there are areas that will probably require a bit of creative liberty on your part ... that's fine with me. Have fun!

genesis max
10 October 2002, 10:26 PM
Kirt, I would also like to do that dog in 3d.
I see that KMK will also give it a go.Well if he agrees, we can do it together or we can both try independently. What do you say Kirt?
I will start working on it as soon as I can.And tell me KMK what software do you use.
Please respond me.

10 October 2002, 10:57 PM
Yes, yes yes yes ... anyone please! So far I have path, KMK and now genesis max interested in modeling it. LOL ... I just want to see the thing starting to take shape.

GO FOR IT! :wip:  :buttrock: :bounce: [insert other motivational emoticons here]

10 October 2002, 11:50 PM
Ok,Kirt I am glad you want me to model it.I just started working on it, but it would be very helpfull if you could make some more drawings from other views.Thank you, and I am going back to modeling.

10 October 2002, 06:33 AM

10 October 2002, 09:50 AM
Good to see someone else doing it. It's a very nice concept.
genesis max> I'm using 3ds max 4.2, what about you? Your name suggests max.

10 October 2002, 04:35 PM
Slystone, any detailed draws are great. But if you don't have the time, it's cool. However, I'll need some drawings of her feet, it's no hurry though, I'm currently working on the hands.
I love the concept!

10 October 2002, 04:36 PM
Great !! I'm impressed URI::G , despite the missing detailed draws u managed doing something very u still need detailed parts? Anyway, feel free to redraw or modify anything u'd like to.... awsome work dude, thx ;)

10 October 2002, 06:00 PM
Yeah, I am using 3dsmax too.I will post model as soon as i can,and KMK if you want I'll post max file too.

Just a suggestion, make the tire thicker. It will make the scale better. With the wider wheel, the thicker tire part will look better I think.

10 October 2002, 11:37 PM
:buttrock: I can only say: I wish I could make a charakters like that :( .. I am to lame for now :) But Guys make it ... !! What else .. maybe someone will do someone like 'Technomage' a shadowrun figure... it would be cool :) Keep it going guys :)

10 October 2002, 02:37 AM
Really impressive... I would love to participate but I just don't have free time... too bad :annoyed:

You are all doing some incredible work, I am really impressed, keep it up, I just can't wait to see these models finished ! :wip: :wip:

10 October 2002, 10:13 AM
Hey there.

Thanks for the critique on my piece. It's coming along.

Here's a small update. I started working on the left arm and still have to put a bunch of doo-dads on it. I just did this test so I can determine the scale (I'm working on the arm in a separate file).
I duplicated the left arm over to the right so I can get a feel for the overall weight of the upper torso.

I really need to get his body covered up so nobody thinks that it's supposed to be like that....must work on the shirt soon.

Anyway, here it is. More long as I finish my kitchen sink, faucets and tiling early tomorrow (oh, that real world interfering again....)

10 October 2002, 05:43 PM
hmm.. my last post appeared in the wrong order.. Anyway, here's an update.

10 October 2002, 04:21 PM
hi all
i was asked to post left and front view of the caracter...
so...there it is :)

10 October 2002, 04:23 PM
the left...

10 October 2002, 04:24 PM
another perspective...:D

10 October 2002, 05:04 PM
I recieved a PM from another person interested in modelling my cyborg-dog, thus bringing the total number of modellers to FOUR! Wow, I'm excited ... thanks for the interest.

However, this may get old for everyone else if we suddenly see several WIPs of the same cyborg. So, I thought that maybe if one or more of you modellers were interested (and felt the need for a greater challenge) you could use the basic concept and design alternative models. The dog (for example) could be a basset hound, doberman, chihuahua (I just think these dogs are hilarious), or saint bernard. The hardware could be changed to suit the dog bread. Say the doberman is more suited for guard duty. The saint bernard is outfitted for rescue. The chihuahua could be like one of those disposable or one-time use cameras that you get from a vending machine.

The model sheet provided is for a terrier/home-personal use model (thus the I-Mac like color choices). Anyway, you get the idea ... I'll try to get a few more drawings done but my free time is somewhat limited.

10 October 2002, 10:49 PM

another update

10 October 2002, 10:54 PM
this is great stuff and an amazing IDEA, Mods if you're looking at this TRY TO ORGANIZE SOMETHING LIKE THIS MORE OFTEN there is a lot of great concept artist there who would love to get thier ideas into 3d and what greater way for 3d people to get some recognision for their 3d work!!! keep it going!

10 October 2002, 11:01 PM
Thanks Raptor235, and yes, there will definitely be a sequal to this "Across The Board Minichallenge".

Updates Updates! :) It's good to see so many people participating in this project, keep it up!

Here's my update, still need to work on the details and the hands :bounce:

11 November 2002, 01:49 AM
to everyon participating these models are turning out great keep up the good work.

11 November 2002, 10:07 AM
undoz: nice! I'm not sure about those red eyes though; It'll be better all textured; or not.

KMK: that's coming nicely!

11 November 2002, 11:06 PM
I wasn't sure about that too. I removed it :p

11 November 2002, 01:33 PM
Hey M@ could you please post a "Flat (Not at an angle)" pic of the back of him i really need to use it for referance! But so far im doing pretty well ive got 85% of the head done perfectly and this being one of my early works really impresses me!

11 November 2002, 04:56 PM
well I don't think I will draw a flat iew for now, we'll see later  your head looks good but well we don't see much in your image. Post your progress inh this forum please ! see you

11 November 2002, 07:07 PM
Heres a Better pic with some temp textures until i get around to adding much better ones (when im done with the model)
The problem is i REALLY need that flat back pic or i wont be able to do the back of his head neck chest leg arm........
PS All the parts not on the head are becuase either A)need back pic or B) Im waiting until i attach the two together ( I have a wierd bug *long story*)

11 November 2002, 07:58 PM
While I'm working on my cyborg's hands, I thought I'd show where I'm at with the arms.
I'm using these metallic textures as stand-ins until I have time to hand-paint some, which will be sometime after my demo reel is complete. Since I'm not attempting to be placed as a texture artist, I figured I'd just throw on a texture I thought looked pretty decent but didn't take a long time to make or render.
The metallic texture uses Maya's Environment Sky texture in the reflection color to get the appearance of reflecting an environment without having to raytrace and take that time hit.

Anyway, here are the arms. I'm working on the hands (1 realistic human, the other mechanical) and should have those done tonight. I'll post an update when they're done.

The arms:

11 November 2002, 07:25 AM
Lookin' slick folks. Keep up the nice work!

Well, call me the cuttin' corners man. I threw together a sub-d human hand and a very Spartan mechanical hand. I need to get this guy animated, so I chose to put in some imperfect but passable substitutes for hands, as I did with the textures. I'll spend more time with the face blendshapes to make him quite expressive.

Here are the post will be the cyborg minus his cloth and some textures.......

11 November 2002, 02:17 AM
OK, I slapped the pieces together again in preparation for animation. I'll do as many facial blendshapes tonight as I can and have a test done tomorrow. I gave up on the cloth for now because it's too time consuming and taking me away from the stuff that's more important to me right now, which is the character animation and setup.

I'll do a little rework of his torso anatomy since it's going to be visible for the time being and I don't like the way it looks right now.

Here he is:

11 November 2002, 05:24 PM
AC- Looking good, you have done a lot with very little on my end. Thanks, I am impressed.

11 November 2002, 06:01 AM

I have a turntable set up as well that I'll be rendering the next couple days and I'll also include some detail and wireframe junk some time this weekend. I'll probably tweak some things once I start rigging but I probably won't do much more modeling on it. Curious what you think mars? Any suggestions? I was considering putting a mech hand on one arm along the lines of some of the other figures you have on your site.

11 November 2002, 01:00 PM
:wavey: i dont understand real, I can pic a concept from here and make it in 3D ??? Have I to ask for an permission ???!!!

11 November 2002, 01:29 PM
Yes %Peppo. This Minichallenge was started 3 months ago to stimulate some interaction between the 3D modellers and the concepters in 2D artwork.
It's coming to an end now, with some amazing results, lots of fun and many things being learned :)
But feel free to pick one of the concepts and model the thing. Please read the guidelines in the very first post. Don't forget to credit the concepter for the concept.

11 November 2002, 04:15 AM
That Model is out of this world, I just wanted to see if there was any chance of geting a wire mesh without a smooth to see what your geometry looks like. I really learn alot from others through just looking at the geometry.:applause:

i am not as good as u all because 3d is just my hobby :)

11 November 2002, 08:48 PM
some parts are colapsed and I don't have the low poly version

11 November 2002, 05:40 PM
I finally got around to finishing the cyborg i was working on and im quite pleased only problem really was the legs but the rest (Execpt chest pipes and belt/underpants) Matches the ref very well!

11 November 2002, 08:48 PM
undoz, that looks great. looks verycomplex but thats a good job. My professors tell me though it might be hell animating. what is your polycount? are you going to try and bring it down for rigging?

Well, it's good to see a renewed interest in this thread. Keep up the good work guys. DimitrisLiatsos and anyone else interested ... feel free to model the dog. I had a lot of people say they were going to do it, but noone has finished it (only one WIP post). I would love to see a finished model so I can post the image along with my concepts on my website (with proper credit and links to the modeller of course).

12 December 2002, 08:17 AM

In the following 2-3 days i will finish the basic with Sleepless's cyborg and then i start the sony DoG!!!
Thank u for letting me model your dog.:wavey: :wip: :wip: :bounce:
