I am working on a particle simulation for a meteor trail. I have applied an particle cloud shader to the particles and adjusted settings according (added ramps, cloud textures...etc). But when I render I get this error message:
particleShape1 requires a surface material, i.e. lambert
When I try and add a lambert it says the particleShape1 needs a particle Cloud shader....
can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong please? I tried searching and didn't find an answer.

When the cloud particles have an amount of 'surfaceShading' chosen in their rendering controls (on the particle shape node), a surface shader like a lambert must also be applied to the particles at the same time as the particle cloud shader (which is a volume shader).
To have both applied at the same time, find the particle cloud shading group (SG) node and drag a lambert onto the Surface Shader slot.
