ILM did some wonderful hardbody stuff to make planes come apart properly in Pearl Harbor.

Anybody know a.) what I'm talking about and b.) If it'd work as well, or if I'm missing a key element?

Hey Proton, glad to see you guys grabbed up some of the deep information discussed on Newtek's forums. :)
You guys should see some of the stuff discussed. It goes very deep.

Here's an animation from the discussion on HardBodyDynamics.
