Challenge Page (

Latest Update: Final Image: The Last One (

Well this is my final image here.I have fudged around with levels and colour and thought this looked better than the previous version.More yellow as opposed to red/blue. Also decided to add more bots as suggested i think it works quite well.Good Idea Thanks! Just adds a bit more of the "Oh I just pooed my pants factor"

Well good luck to all! I have had fun participating in this challange and look forward to future challanges!

Hope you guys enjoyed yourselves as much as i did and hopefully learned a thing or two during the process.

Thanks a bunch to the CG Networks crew for hosting yet another awsome challange!!!

Kind Regards

This one shows some detail emerging on the chest plate and shoulder area.

My Site

12 December 2004, 06:45 AM (

I did this lastnight. It shows a tad more detail to the arms with the hands roughed out and the legs are starting to evolve. Got lots to do yet better get busy eh!

Wow! sceary guy... I woudn't be the forst one to fight with him:) Very good modeling! I can only advice to be careful while texturing this guy, to avoid some similarities to the terminators.

12 December 2004, 04:31 AM (

The legs have taken shape. A few more details to come yet just want to get the bulk of the work finished, then i'll go back and tweek it.

My Site

12 December 2004, 04:04 PM (

More detail added to the leg here and surfacing started. Now all i need to do is model the universe some spaceships and about 100,000 extra's he he he.
No really my concept is quite simple. odd but simple :0)

12 December 2004, 04:28 PM
The legs' shader looks awsome! very realistic! Can you tell us some tips for doing it? The only thing which I don't like are the light outlines on his feet, it's probably to high specularity there..? but nevertheless the progress is very promising. Keep it up:thumbsup:

12 December 2004, 04:45 PM
oh, yes, nice progress. The legs are very interesting, a mix of organic and industrial more mechanical looking shapes; very cool.

12 December 2004, 08:08 AM
Man, this is really looking like some nice work Gary!

One comment I may make would be that I would almost expect the head to have some kind of mechanical jaw setup, rather then a 'bone' look? Sorta that Terminator exoskeleton thing, but then that's just me... :)

Otherwise I can't wait to see the whole character - Then I may have some more critique to make cause its hard to tell just from bits... Though I really love those legs! Also, like your jetpack too...

Great stuff! Good luck!

12 December 2004, 11:34 AM
Thanks for the kind words all

arturro! Hi dude well there is no secret method here bro is't just the result of many hours of test renders, lighting changes and surface adjustments! Iv'e just been putting in heaps of hours on this project i guess i need to upgrade my equiptment so things don't take so long to eventuate! Maybe when i score that primo job i'll do just that and really crank out some good stuff! Cheers dude:bounce:

SNoWs Hi Cheers for the comments dude they are mucho appreciated :)

kevman3d Thank's Kevman! Well i have thought about the jaw quite abit and am in the state of mind that i don't want this guy to resemble the terminator. I was trying to get a caracter with a more individual kinda persona as opposed to a mass produced battle droid. I was thinking of a battle ready mechanical body controled by an organic CPU or Brain/head. I have started a face gaurd but i'm not sure about it yet.

Thanks again rock on Dude!!!

12 December 2004, 07:37 AM
Just realised that i haven't posted a link to my site on this WIP!

So Here It is:

Been working on the site trying to get it pumped up a bit. Also starting a CG Site Stay tuned for the updates! :bounce:

12 December 2004, 11:57 AM (

This is my Idea. A BioMech alien force arrives at earth with a mission to obtain power from ancient sources unknown to man. The total Annihilation of mankind is swift and calculated. The alien race see us as a source of genetic samples for reconstruction.

12 December 2004, 12:48 PM
Hi there! the composition is great, but I don't like the pose of the alien. Have you seen "the Last Samurai" with Tom Cruise? I would advice to make this pose quite similar to the samurai that has jus cut head of some guy. In this movie it's hsown very good. The legs are widely spread, low(bended), the body is aslo bended in a great way... It's hard to describe by words... but I hope you get what I mean.

Good luck!

12 December 2004, 02:00 AM
Hey arturro! Yeah the pose is not represented here very well. Thanks for the advice i'll see what i can find out.I need to bring more action into this scene.

12 December 2004, 08:34 AM
Hi there,

Nice modelling but would agree on the comment regarding the head detailing. It doesn't come up to the same std as the legs for example.

But otherwise, looking good. Keep it up my friend.

12 December 2004, 02:48 PM
:wavey: very interesting concept. Very nice modeling indeed. I have a problem with the head though. I don't like that the body, legs are really detailed and then you look at the head and it is like simple... also I think you could add some plugs and cables, to demonstrate oil, or some sort of lubricant sirculation, regarding the mech part of the organism. Well fair enought I guess... lol!

- cheers l8r!

12 December 2004, 05:49 PM
Superb modeling and texturing on that borg. That thing looks mean. Not much to crit on looks to good for now. I can't wait to see more updates.

12 December 2004, 04:26 AM
nice modelling! im waiting for the piramid-shaped ships, i wanna see them detailed :) !

12 December 2004, 11:42 AM
I Have been helping a family member out with his site and haven't had much time to myself this week. But im just about to breakout that barrell of midnight oil and start burning it!:bounce:

great modeling so far

12 December 2004, 08:34 PM
The alien guy looks great, cant wait to see more updates

12 December 2004, 09:48 AM (

Just a test here for lighting. still have more to do to this scene. Just been very busy and thought i'd better post my progress so far! crits welcome.

12 December 2004, 03:23 PM (

Hello all, I have been busy all night working on this trying to not get to far behind. Renders have been taking a while to eventuate. This is the basic set up so far still a few details to be added. Crits welcome

12 December 2004, 04:48 PM
hi man,

i saw your post on my thread so i popped in
cool stuff

some crits:

i agree with arturo, change the pose so that he looks at us and maybe put some more robots in the scene(it'will feel like there is more space)

you could also make him the leader of an army of robots. for render-time: just render them seperately with an aproximation of the lighting and composite them in photoshop.

that's what i feel

thanx for reading me(as opposed to listening to me)

see ya

12 December 2004, 12:17 PM
Hey Kotsos, Yeah i have spent quite a bit of time rigging this guy so i can pose him effectivly so i had better try some different poses. arturro suggested the ninja pose from the last samurai. I have looked into it! it's just my concept was to have him retreating from a body he had just severed the head from.Maybe some modifications are in order to give this scene some more action/motion. yeah i think more bots would intensify it more. I'll try a few variations and post them.

Cheers Dude!

01 January 2005, 03:35 AM
Looking good! :)

I'd agree with everybody on some pose work - I'd also add in there some better composition too. I think you'll want to adjust your camera to get a more dynamic shot... Perhaps lower to ground and looking up at the robot to give him a more menacing persona? (maybe even a little bit of a dutch angle?).

Dunno - Just a thought, but I'd have a play with the camera (and pose) and see what you can do...

Otherwise keep at it... Love to see your final result! :)

01 January 2005, 04:24 AM
Cheers kev good advise as usuall I will give the pose and angles a try and see what I can come up with.:bounce: I'm on it!!!

01 January 2005, 10:44 AM (

Just made a few changes here i'm hoping to get some more done on this
tonight. It's going to be a late one! I will try adding some more bot's need to figure out the pose for those guys and i think i will make them have different weapons.I'm not too sure about the body of his victim it dosn't really fit that well or look that good so i took it out for now.

01 January 2005, 11:16 AM
your modeling is nice! i notice that the latest version , the robot seems to look to camera , like he know ,just like protrait , i don't know how to explain my eng is suck, so , maybe u can find the dynamic post ,
good luck

01 January 2005, 02:41 PM
That's a great looking mech, and your black metal shaderrocks. I think i liked the more apocalyptic environments in your previous posts better, though. With the mech being the main focus of your pic, maybe think about making him more dramatic: eg. have him coming more at the viewer, breaking frame, and moving the camera down, looking up, so that he seems bigger and more threatening. Great work, keep it coming!

01 January 2005, 11:51 PM
looking good gazza, getting there.
hows your sleep/work ratio? lol

01 January 2005, 11:06 AM
Hey Quadzilla! yeah the old sleep deprivation trick eh! Foiled with a power nap and a glass of just juice bubbles! Look out i'm back! turn on the sounds check! clear some elbow room check! Put some pants on................oo theres the trick knee!.............. Check! Ok Ready go!!

And cheers for the comments all it helps to keep one from derailing at 3:00 am.

01 January 2005, 05:06 PM (

This is where i got to tonight well this morning. boy i'm pooped :0)

01 January 2005, 05:33 PM
good job

are you working on using more of them?

see ya

01 January 2005, 09:12 PM (

This is what i have so far.I know time is short now so i will attempt to brush things up some. Any comments would be appreciated.I'm on dial up so surfing around this site is PAINFULLY SLOW!!! but some of the other entries i have seen are so awsome! and make me wonder if my entry is worthy????

I have learned a few things during the process here and one of the big things i have learned is you need a really good computer if you are going to get anything done on time. And also Photoshop can do some really awsome things.I am going to devote some serious time to getting more knowledgeable about this app as i can see it will be well worth the time.
If only this kind of work could earn one a living! It seems that all any prospective employers want to see is detergent bottles or cute little puppys.
Well thats the game i guess unless your one of the fortunate few!

Big up! Respect! East Staines Massive.

01 January 2005, 04:00 AM
Just going nuts finishing things up. Will post final image soon.Must hurry going to a birthday party whoo hoo!

Hi Gary. Your picture is full of violence and threat............ you have achieved showing that really well. Congratulations on completing this challenge and will look forward to seeing you at the next one! Good luck. :applause: Claireabella

01 January 2005, 07:49 AM
Yap, the most brutal entry:) bu tthese are needed also. The face of teh robot greatly emphasizes the feelings. My congratulations and best wishes! Good luck

01 January 2005, 08:17 AM
Hi Claireabella.

Thanks for your comments! And i too look forward to seeing you here in the next challange it has been alot of fun as well as work but now it's all just fun!

Yeah that was what i was hoping to achive here. This scene is of the last human on this planet being beheaded after a huge assult on the entire planet.
Hords of cyborg warriors swarm the planet in search of any possible survivors and dismember them.
Well equiped with thermo and sonic detection systems nothing escapes the invaders grip as they swiftly irradicate the planet of all human life.
Keeping parts of the humans they are instructed to keep such as the head with the brain in good condition to be used in their development of dispencible slave cyborgs.

Do they stay on earth? No one from this planet will ever know but one thing is sure.

01 January 2005, 09:59 AM
Nice modeling.
I suggest to use HDRI for the robots reflection in future. And what about some glow? It wont harm the image.:scream:

Great work:bounce:

01 January 2005, 07:23 PM
Wow, ... what a apocalyptical image Gary.
Having this devastated background to your characters, indeed they are really fearful and bloodcurdling. Cool character.
And really nice modeling you have there.
Congrats Gary and, Good Luck mate !! :applause: :applause:

01 January 2005, 09:19 PM

Your kind words and encouragement are very much appreaciated! Thankyou.

01 January 2005, 01:07 PM
Can Anybody tell me why my enrty shows up as usual but other entrants show up in a voting poll format?

01 January 2005, 01:19 PM
Maybe they dont allow you to vote for yourself so the page looks like the normal entry page. I think i saw your entry up for voting when i voted.

01 January 2005, 01:34 PM
maybe u browsed the view entries section, which isn't the same as the voting section?

To me both your and my own entry were up for voting...

01 January 2005, 05:24 PM
Thanks Sqibbit, I just thought I had forgotten to do something i was supposed to. Got that OHHHH NOOOOO feeling you know the one  :scream: :D  !

Anyway yeah some threads I visit have the regular layout and others have the vote layout. just got me all confused. But I found the right page finaly and it seems everything is ok. There is a few entrys there I didn't even see before! Bummer! Oh how it sucks to be on dail up! I don't know about you guys out there but I can grow a beard waiting for pages to load. Has anyone seen that AD where a guy is sitting in front of the computer and the computer is not responding? He starts with a tap to the computer then a knock then a servere beating with the keyboard? Yeah you know how that feels eh!. I live in the boonies and you can't get broadband here? I got excited when I saw an AD on tv for whoosh! wireless broadband! yaay! I checkout the website to see how much they demand to supply the connection and get informed that my area has no coverage! But I can sign a partition to request sevice for my area! Cool! Now all I need to do is talk all the cows and sheep around here into loging onto that site and doing the same so I can try and maintain some level of sanity. I might have to leave the shire one of these days?
Well i'm off to shave my toes.

01 January 2005, 05:40 PM
yea I remember the dial modem days...urgh*shuddeR*...

luckily been having cable for a few years now..

just have pen and paper ready and u can draw some sketches while the pages load.. :)

01 January 2005, 05:43 PM
:) mmmmmmmmmmm

01 January 2005, 06:09 PM
Yeah Squibbit, I have my pencils handy! Which makes me think i should take my sketch work to my buddies place and scan them and add them to my web site. I have been concentrating hard out on 3d stuff lately. I'm kinda looking forward to doing some concept stuff. I just had a look at your 2d work. Nice work man you got da skills bro. What do you like best 2 or 3d?. That's a tough one for me I love them both.

I spent many years with pens and pencils drawing pictures only as a hobbie. I have learned to use a computer over the past year and love it now. But still lots to learn and I don't think that will ever change with the constant development of new software and ideas.

Nice to meet you sqib l8r dude!

01 January 2005, 03:44 PM
I like both 2D and 3D too... so much yet to learn in both fields, but the more
i learn the more i like and there's not many better places to learn than in these
cgtalk competitions...even if i didn't learn a thing it would still be lots and lots of fun :)

01 January 2005, 02:35 AM
Yeah this is my first CGNetworks competition, and I have really enjoyed taking part in it.I think I will make it a regular part of my diet from now on.

It's been an awsome way to learn new things! Jump off the cliff then learn to fly! :bounce:
