Sleepless (

08 August 2002, 05:24 AM
OOooOO I was just going to make a new thread for this. I haven't posted in a while since my scanner's sort of...dead. Therefore I decided to break out the old tablet(Don't eat me alive Wacom_knight) and make this little doodle. This was mostly an experiment to learn Painter's tools so go easy me. I'd still like critiques please.

I bow before the speed painting might that is sleepless, but why is there white canvas on the bottom left corner? love it still.

08 August 2002, 06:01 AM
all right, way to jump in....Cockofthewok! here we go.

white space..uhh, unfinished area. Where's Joerentja?

another from me tonight, from ref.

08 August 2002, 06:32 AM
This interested me I did this in like 20 mins in painter.... A different approach than I usually take. No ref used. Here it is.. -Jeremy-

08 August 2002, 01:20 PM
Nice drawings!
Here´s mine, 30 min. dedicated to Jeroentje, it´s the Hollandia.

08 August 2002, 03:04 PM

08 August 2002, 03:11 PM
I'm still learning with my tablet, here's my latest image, took me about 10 mins. I've a long way to go yet. :hmm:

08 August 2002, 04:18 PM
cool stuff sleepless.. Shitty i have some packing up to do for school. Maybe ill have time to do some new speed paintings later tonight, i feel inspired. But ill post a speed painting a did a little while ago. Not too many people saw this. Its a reproduction of a cropped hehe Anders Zorn ( GREAT PAINTER) painting.

I dont remember how long it took. Not that long.. around an hour.

08 August 2002, 04:30 PM
my 40 minutes of overworking it. agh.

Plouffe- nice tones there. post then pack, and post more when you get settled in. I always like your works. Pancreas- how'd you do that? Roach[MXF]- nice aggressive comic look. makes me wanta try one without halftones. Keep em coming.

I vowed to do 1 a day to learn more about PS7

08 August 2002, 05:58 PM
Here you go than.
Selfportrait, about 5 to 10 minutes.

Pancreas, that is a really gorgeous piece! Only 30 minutes???
I should actually do one of the Spanish Armada now LOL
Dunno if you're interested in Tall-Ships, but than you should read the great book "Batavia's Graveyard" by Mike Dash. He describe the daily routine on a ship like this very well. I am warning you for the

08 August 2002, 06:05 PM
Pancreas: That ship is amazing!! I want to see more work from you! WOW!:D

08 August 2002, 04:58 AM
made myself stop at 60mins. never got beyond the green.

jeroentje> you made an appearance! more Elvi please.

08 August 2002, 07:23 AM
30 minutes? Damn, you guys are fast! 30 minutes only got me this far...

Probably won't be finished for another 3 hours!

I was planning a whole bunch of them, fat, skinny etc. No time though. Work mainly and I am doing some chick (drawing I mean ;) ).

08 August 2002, 12:18 PM
Elvi = many Elvis. he he.

08 August 2002, 12:53 PM
LOL yes I understood. I meant about the appearance. But i think I get it now ;)

08 August 2002, 04:45 PM
Elvis? Well sort of... about 40 minutes.

08 August 2002, 05:10 PM
LOL! too cool dude. love it. Maybe Elvis's agent? The hairy chest cracked me up. ha ha.

GandalftheGrey> what part of Ohio?

08 August 2002, 06:28 PM
So, my first action as a mod: sticky this thread ;)
Let's kick some life into 2D artwork :beer:

08 August 2002, 06:40 PM
you've got some big plans. Doncha bucko?

08 August 2002, 03:58 AM
hmmm.... more painter fun. about 30 min. I guess since I'm still learning the package, I work slower. I don't know what to think about this one.

08 August 2002, 04:31 AM
Cockofthewok->Lot's o energy (and blood) that's what it's all about ain't it. :) go man go.

Painter (paint over) color attempt, our new mod has inspired me to try coloring this way, ooooooh fun.

08 August 2002, 11:04 AM
i hope not to be off theme (is not a paint)
BTW this is a few second sketch for a 3d modelling

and a hair-color test

08 August 2002, 11:40 AM
Another one, this is very funny:
40-50 min:

and another 40:

I´m getting my references from a wonderful book my uncle gave me, it´s called "The golden century of the Holland Landscape", it´s great, full of skies, battle ships, cows, iced lakes...
Jeroentje, i´ll look for that book (but translated to spanish, cuz it will be full of foreign words for the ship´s parts). BTW you don´t have eyebrows?:D That hairy Elvis rocks! Sleepless i love your style, the brushtrokes and the colors. Hey Roel, nice girl (beautiful eyes), i´m gonna try a portrait too. That´s a bloody one Clockofthewok very manga style; Carlocky i like the googles head but with the twi´lek tail, the colored hair has a nice effect, very dinamic.

08 August 2002, 04:11 PM
Hi guys,this is my first real post.
This is a wild thread with amazing things in it,you all have my unconditional love(well,i might add some conditions later)
Anyway here it is, it took a bit longer then 30min ,but that's because i have a VERY unstable computer(damn thing crashes many times a day)pointers are very welcome (you can break me to the bone if you like)

08 August 2002, 06:49 PM
Hey Fiber, nice expression :eek:
Another one 20 min.

08 August 2002, 05:22 AM
Just tubes.
Made myself stop at 1hr 15mins. Musta been thinking about the Cyborg thread. Speed paints are fun, no pressure just doodle..... PS7

Pancreas- that book has got you on a roll, awsome cow paint

08 August 2002, 06:06 AM
Here's a speed paint that stalled and went to 120 minutes or so, but I was distracted by friends for the duration and I've only been using a tablet for about 4 hours now.

It's based on a reference image that I collected a long time ago for some reason (and now it's justified :p ).

Right at the end I threw in the pale fog/mist because I wanted to fade out the background a bit.

It's nothing special and the lighting is pretty bland, but it's my submission as a speed paint.

08 August 2002, 12:23 PM
About this page images:

earl - Remind me something Impressionist, maybe first painter as Gustave Coubert even if the subject is surrealistic (first impressinism liked real stuff and social diseases)
Very poetic.. seem a Hayao Myazaki (sorry for the spel) Manga (Laputa)

Sleepless - i like your style a lot as u know. Tubes remind me a "Dune" character. It's creepy enough. I still dream a comic drawn by you. Like your portrait too

Pancreas - your draw gives the real sensation of an old stamp. you cught the same attention to the details they took in theirold paintings

Cockofthewok very Dynamic....near to Devilman manga.

Here another sketch of mine made in an Arpil (I don't remeber the year) in a Architecture class. Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright (my first Love) and Gabetti & Isola (my theachers)

09 September 2002, 04:21 AM
this is in MS paint took me bout 10 mins:p

09 September 2002, 05:56 AM

About two minutes while a friend of mine was playing eternal darkness.

09 September 2002, 06:38 AM

initial sketch was about half an hour all together.. then like 12 minutes in photoshop.

09 September 2002, 08:25 AM
~~~~:) painter
09 September 2002, 08:29 AM
Beautiful Eric-X:applause: :applause:
Question: Is that from a scanned drawing or fully in painter?
09 September 2002, 03:48 PM
About 60 minutes, no ref, Painter Classic.
09 September 2002, 05:57 PM
hey, thats cool. But that reflection is a bit wierd?
The hood and the front window seems to be aligned, so there could be no such reflection.
Those headlights are supernice:thumbsup:
If I interpreted the shapes somewhat correctly:rolleyes:
Here´s a terrible sketch but ypu´ll get the idea.
09 September 2002, 06:02 PM
Hehe, they're not as aligned as you drew it but you got me.
I slacked a bit on it in the end because I found out why I hadn't drawn a car like this in 6 years. It is just plain boring to do. Or maybe I did a couple too many when I was 16 ;)
09 September 2002, 09:12 AM
1 hour 15 mins
09 September 2002, 03:20 PM
Sorry, I'm nervous
09 September 2002, 07:51 PM
LOL sorry to hear that Norante. What happened to the markers?
09 September 2002, 09:51 PM
This is especially embarrassing for me since
a) I don't have/use a tablet
b) My drawing has become pretty terrible in the last 2 years
c) My ability in photoshop is worse
But some of the stuff in this thread is so nice, I thought I'd have a crack (oh dear god). Anyway, 5 minutes - and it shows!
09 September 2002, 02:03 AM
Tablet is destroyed? Whatever!! Get a brush, China (India?) Ink, 10 minutes, and.......
I did in 10 minutes with a brush and ink, no reference... but everybody saw Matrix a bazillion times, so who needs reference, anyway? :p
keep it up people!
09 September 2002, 04:41 AM
from bluetooth.....oh well...gotta break out of this green mode. I hate green when I paint with acrylics but like it in PS, can't explain.
09 September 2002, 04:38 PM
Great job every one!!!
thanks for starting this Tim. I just love these threads.
Blake Kehler
09 September 2002, 01:29 AM
About 45 mins to 1 hour. The person was made in painter, then the bg and reflection and sword in photoshop.
09 September 2002, 05:14 AM
I love this thread.
Blake, i like the reflection.
Here's my latest. Let's see, it's 10pm now, and I got home at 8:15pm, so there's a max of 1h30min on this. The face drawing concept was already done (1 inch doodle) , I just scanned it and painted with it.
I think I lose the speed part of the speed painting. I start off pretty well, but I'm having so much fun with the new tablet I can't stop myself.
Anyway, here's my alien guy. I'm not big on the background, I just threw so at least there's something.
09 September 2002, 06:06 AM
Nice one earl. A big banjo roll for you! Is there any other way than a tablet? I can't imagine painting without it.
Agree with earl that is a great reflection Blake:)
More from everybody please.
09 September 2002, 12:09 PM
This was intended as a doodle,but all of a sudden i was 3 hours further in time :surprised
But since it was intended for this thread i'll post it anyway!
Keep 'm coming everyone ,it's nice to see so many people delivering great stuff .
-inspirational is what you are- :p
09 September 2002, 01:51 PM
Hahah!! :D I can't fathom the emotion that your character is going through Fiber, but it sure makes me laugh!! Good expression!
09 September 2002, 03:41 PM
he's yelling "breakfast" to his buddys :)
09 September 2002, 06:46 PM
Been a while since I've been here!
So jeroentje is a moderator!!! congrats!!!
here's mine, took me 10 min...
09 September 2002, 08:05 PM
Thanks, I am redecorating, you like it?
Nice chick, clever use of the highlights :)
09 September 2002, 01:12 PM
Hey Fiber, do you mind if I make an avatar of your pic? That's damn funny.
09 September 2002, 02:52 PM
Norante,as long as you ask and don't snatch ,i would be honoured if you do.(im in a good mood i guess :))
Glad you like it!
Cheers mate.
09 September 2002, 08:10 AM
30 minutes is NOT a long time! ha, heres my attempt at it, I didn't even have time to draw the hands. I think this is an awesome idea. I see now that I really need to work on my painting skills. You guys have really inspired me, thanks! I just want to paint all day now and work on my skills. Is anyone else having massive problems with the new watercolor in painter 7? I can't stand it, its so slow! Keep up the awesome work!
09 September 2002, 08:18 AM
I agree its not the same but you can get good results if play around with the brush settings a bit.
09 September 2002, 08:40 AM
I liked the head, so I did a close up of him. Didn't have time to start painting on this one. rats
09 September 2002, 07:37 PM
Nice work everyone.
I just felt like contributing with some of my recent ones, varying from 20 to 60 minutes. (The theme is Star Wars, in case you didn't notice :)
Blake Kehler
09 September 2002, 08:29 PM
I really like the first one of Obi-Wan :)
09 September 2002, 09:09 PM
Good work arteeests!:beer:
09 September 2002, 06:04 AM
Note to myself: It's only 45 minutes of your life, It's only 45 minutes of your life, It's only 45 minutes of your life......
09 September 2002, 06:33 AM
This is the best thread I've seen yet... just beautiful
09 September 2002, 06:36 AM
I don't remember how long, something like 40 min.
09 September 2002, 06:40 AM
No, that was about an hour
09 September 2002, 01:18 PM
Hi all this is my first post here :wavey: !
Really nice drawings here :thumbsup: !
So this is my first picture made with Painter (inclued with my Wacom Graphire 2)...
The original (done in...hmmm... maybe 15 mn) is in the top-left corner. I duplicated it and changed the colors with photoshop... just for fun :surprised: and finally i like this popart touch...
PS : Sorry for my bad english :shrug:
09 September 2002, 02:36 PM
Here is a second drawing of mine... AAaaaw so cute :rolleyes:
09 September 2002, 03:14 PM
This is sketch with mouse in Photoshop3 ,without using any image(time 10 minutes) .
09 September 2002, 03:31 PM
Thanks for no more double posts Paata,
I think you prefer it to be here so I got rid of the other post.
Cheers, jeroentje
09 September 2002, 03:35 PM
09 September 2002, 07:59 PM
Another one done in...hmmm...quickly ;)
09 September 2002, 08:24 PM
At least someone is feeling happy.
Welcome to the board Ti-Ki...
20 mins:
09 September 2002, 08:44 PM
@ti-ki...i like this style u draw...looks like really fast drawn pics but they look very good, want to speed paint like this,good work ;-)
@jeroentje....the atmosphere of the image is awesome, have something from these dark rooms where big bosses make decisions and that stuff...but he seems to be a little bit thinking (nachdenklich in german..)...maybe sad?!
like it!!!
09 September 2002, 10:50 PM
I like the eyebrows of Rye's character and I couldn't stay away from the idea as this sketch was forming. The foreshortening isn't totally convincing, but I've never been very daring with perspective.
09 September 2002, 06:18 AM
Ok, here is mine, this took me like 20 to 30 minutes, so I guess I am not a speed painter. lol
09 September 2002, 03:18 PM
Thanks for comments guys ! :) :wavey:
@jeroentje: which pentil/tool do you use for your "depressive man" ?
@earl: same question than jeroentje...
In Painter : Do you work with big image size and you rescale it in a lower format ?
Is there layers somewere ? or something like that ?
A new picture a made this morning...
The head was inspired by jeroentje's picture (the guy in darkness)
Always speed painting but i stopped some time to find why he's crying...:shrug:
And i have many problems to draw humans (yes it's a human here :hmm: )
09 September 2002, 03:25 PM
Painter Classic (has only 1 layer), blue background -> pencil tool for the sketch -> marker for the shadows -> airbrush for the hightlights and the finishing touch.
09 September 2002, 03:50 PM
20 min
80 min
09 September 2002, 03:52 PM
fooling around with painter 7.........trying to learn the tools.
09 September 2002, 04:54 PM
Titan--> nice textures! Keep em coming.
09 September 2002, 04:57 PM
I'm just using Photoshop 7 with a normal brush, but set to use dynamic width (the harder you press on the tablet, the thicker the line).
Once I have the basic shadows and highlights painted in, I change the brush to have a low opacity, so it only puts a little bit of colour each stroke.
09 September 2002, 10:16 PM
45 min
09 September 2002, 10:00 AM
Here's a quick 5 minute one from me. Still getting to grips with it all.
09 September 2002, 11:34 AM
Here's one I did at school, took me less then 10 min.
09 September 2002, 11:56 AM
don't remeber i was listening to a lecture in my uni
then water-color applied with php 6.0
inspired by Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden by is last hair style (look last album pictures)
09 September 2002, 05:42 PM
About 40 min.
09 September 2002, 06:48 PM
This was my first time painting anything, really, let alone painting with a wacom and painter 7. Prior to this I mostly did just pencil sketches. Just starting to learn Painter. Sweet program.
09 September 2002, 07:22 PM
@Indolent: Nice head ! I like the hairs :thumbsup:
@carlocki : I think watercolors with computers is not as well simulated than other technics....
@jeroentje & earl : thanks ! :wavey:
@Titan : how do you do these lines, i don't find a tool/pentil with this style...?:shrug:
New pic : maybe 20 or 30 minutes...
09 September 2002, 08:17 PM
c'mon! only 900 more posts till we catch up to
09 September 2002, 01:20 AM
Ok, I like this thread so much I had to reply. I've seen some incredible work for the limited time given. Anyways heres my submission. Pen sketch --> Streamline --> PS 7 (for painting). Total time around 45 mins.
09 September 2002, 03:55 PM
This thread rocks! :buttrock: Come on guys! work work work! :wip: I think you can do it better and faster... hin hin hin...
Congratulations to everybody! :thumbsup:
Sleepless, I love your style!
Pancreas, plouffe, jeroentje, roel.... I'm flattened!
Ooooooouuuuooooooooouuuuooooohhh! I spend hours to watch this thread!
Painter classic, about 20 min:
09 September 2002, 11:00 AM
10 mins, sheesh I'm slow.
09 September 2002, 04:39 PM
This was about 40 min. Too long if you ask me. If this is speed paints...
Nice images guys. :thumbsup: :buttrock:
09 September 2002, 05:01 PM
Gamoron, I think you are right handed ;)
09 September 2002, 06:28 PM
Um. no comment.:rolleyes:
09 September 2002, 06:35 PM
Cgkoko - nah, sorry it's photoshop, but I did work in charcoal for my 1st 7rs freelance...
Gamoron - 40min. too long? (he says as he goes over the limit again) Do we have a defined speed limit? Anything over an hour is pushing it to me. My stuff is bad under that.
bibi5000- Thanks, same to ya.
Indolent - I wish my 1st painting was that good. More.
09 September 2002, 07:05 PM
Sleepless - How do you do this worn-out charcoal-like look in Photoshop?
If I may ask?
And: Could it be possible, that I saw some of your work in the Communication Arts Illustration Annual?
Trying to achieve the Azpiri´s chicks look... 60 min
[edit] Another hour to add the nipples. [edit]
09 September 2002, 08:32 PM
Now come on Pancreas, when you post 4 naked girls, be a man and draw in the nipples... :D
09 September 2002, 08:39 PM
i didn´t want to be censored..... does this sound believable?
[edit] Done, now i feel dirty. But happier too. [edit]
09 September 2002, 08:47 PM
No it doesn't :D
And when you're at it; try to give them a groundshadow aswell.
Bibi5000-->"How do you do this worn-out charcoal-like look in Photoshop?"
PS 7.0 brushes are great!. I worked in greyscale mode but you could do it in color too. Quickly do a pencil sketch, scan it at a low res 72dpi. open in photoshop res it up to 300dpi.(tends to blur the image some) Use curves and lighten the doodle so its about middletone. Then just start with low opacity black brushes set to multiply to build up the darks where ya want them. -I think the key is to switch between normal & multiply when using the brushes, sometimes paint with white to pull out the darks. REALLY BIG IMPORTANT part here.....Try all those cool Natural media brushes and faux brushes that come with PS7 at various settings. email me if you need more info.
CA? I wish. Don't usually enter, figured I was just giving them entry money to buy dinner with. LOL. It's my fave of the annuals, small and tough to accepted.
09 September 2002, 10:38 PM
this stuff to scanner something on a low resolution remind me when i scanned this sketch on a grainy paper. The low resolution (72dpi) gave to the draw a strange effect
so i post was also a very speed pencil and a very speed php 6.0 attempt to color it
09 September 2002, 11:04 PM
green things.
09 September 2002, 04:55 PM
@Carlocki : thx :)
it's funny, when i draw it i don't remember that teddy of the cover of a CD of Korn (huh many "of" in this sentence :insane: )...
I show the pic to a friend and he says "hey that's the same teddy than etc etc Korn... yes it really looks like the "Korn teddy" :D
Edit : have you a link or something to see these competition issues?
09 September 2002, 08:41 PM
sleepless: Thanks for the tip about brushes. I'll try it the next time.
And about CA: I checked my last copy of the Annual (it's from '88) and I didn't see your name, as you said. But I ran into some images which looked like the ones on your website (or the one of your wife, I don't know... :shrug: ). If you want me to, I can scan some of them and post them.
Please excuse my ****ing bad english (had some beer too :wavey: )
Ti-Ki, I had a strange desire to put on a korn CD after seeing your image ;)
lol :D
I did a quick self portrait (about 25 minutes, interruptet by the telephone) on painter classic
(And if you want to know about my nose: Yes, it's big, but not THAT big...)
09 September 2002, 09:11 PM
Fan art thread or speed paint thread? I dunno? (ref of course)
Jeroentje-Blue Mood?
bibi5000- You never want to see anything I did in 1988, I'll check in the closet we might even have that year's annual, dont' bother posting them.
Pancreas- cityscape,yes! Painter or PS
Great thread everyone!
09 September 2002, 09:17 PM
Whoa! The penguin!
09 September 2002, 10:55 PM
Blue? It's green... :shrug:
09 September 2002, 11:16 PM
Green? how about we split the difference and say "aquamarine"? LOL Anyways I like it a bunch. You're characters are cruising along great in painter.
(This incorrect color viewing on my part may be the reason my pictures looks wacked sometimes.....):)
09 September 2002, 11:55 PM
I'm so tired
i Tried new php 7.0 brushes
and then i made this....stuff
nothing special
but a test
really fast
09 September 2002, 12:01 AM
Sleepless - i love that Deny de vito Penguin inspired me a lot
Jerontje - Great mood in that draw
Pancreas - great stuff again
ehi i love everyone and everything
don't let me become a art picasso will be discover anymore with me!!!!!
09 September 2002, 08:34 AM
It took a little bit more than 30 min. Im a newbie and absolut no speedpainter. But was a liberating work!
09 September 2002, 11:13 AM
jeroentje, I'm thinking you're a smoker hehe, almost all your pictures have people smoking, not that I mind, I'm a smoker, hehe just curious. Good work by the way, nice moods and coloring. :beer:
09 September 2002, 04:14 PM
Hi people
Newbie here (very newbie)
5 min photoshop
hey this is fun.
09 September 2002, 05:51 PM
still out of door
09 September 2002, 09:14 PM
inspired by jeroentje :beer: hope you like it
photoshop ~ 20 min
09 September 2002, 10:49 PM
Here some oif mine about 20 min each
while talking on a phone with a friend
09 September 2002, 10:50 PM
and another one
09 September 2002, 02:45 AM
this is my first post on CGTALK
Paintbbs work by my mouse 1 hour er :)
09 September 2002, 02:52 AM
I want to know what you think about my painting?
09 September 2002, 04:23 AM
Iwask->good mousing and I like the intense color.. the eyes seem a bit too different in shape.
09 September 2002, 04:27 AM
I tried Painter7 again. That "dirty marker brush" is cool for sketching with. He's based on somebody famous but I don't know who.
eww. that eye is way to light..too late now.
09 September 2002, 03:14 PM
Feng Zhu inspiration, about 35´43´´
Mickley aggresive colors, very pop. If i talk at the phone and draw at the same time, i´d draw a phone, very simple mind mine.
Carlocki your drawings are always very thought, a history behind them. I love your first one, the Wright´s style, although i´m one of those Aalto fans.
Sleepless, i use ps, perhaps i should try painter, but my wacky wacom is too jealous. The pinguin is great, wow i could recognize your style with my eyes closed, just touching the screen.
Iwask you can do that with a mouse? get a wacom now!
09 September 2002, 09:16 PM
me again.....
Somebody wanted to know how I did the fake charcoal look so I did a cheesey step by step on this..I'll post in the tutorial thread.
09 September 2002, 05:22 AM
Pancreas- Cool concept.
Carlocki- Brushes r fun?
bibi5000- you captured the "mod" Whoo hoo
More PS brush tests-rough oil. From a newspaper mugshot.
I'll stop for awhile now....Hoggin the board.
09 September 2002, 09:57 AM
It's crazy how fast some of you paint. This is, sadly, all the progress I can make in about half an hour. It's also a good example of my sloppy wacom drawing skills.
09 September 2002, 11:01 AM
new brushes are real fun Sleepless
yuor soldier is really full of poetry it seems have a venice mask
i think i need a tutorial from you....this way to use computer is really usefull
Pancreas thank for that words they give me will to go deep, your female face is really intense!
ehy where is a new Jeroentje illustrator Character???!?!
let us enjoy it dutch guy!
09 September 2002, 11:04 AM
But I am in a sketching mood my Italian friend.
So that is just a big fat bad luck for you :)
09 September 2002, 12:15 PM
09 September 2002, 05:25 PM
You're right Carlocki these new brushes are quite cool, here's a 2 to 5 minute sketch using some of those new brushes.
09 September 2002, 06:55 PM
30 mins from me, still practicing my face drawing on a tablet.
09 September 2002, 02:54 AM
Here's 5-8 minutes in Photoshop. A quick Bjork is who I was trying for. Kinda sorta squint one eye put your hand over your other eye then close your other eye and maybe it's Bjork? Quickie though non the less...
09 September 2002, 04:38 AM
jeroentje- you're correct, Painter7 is a much faster prog to work in. Did as ya said...big block in shapes with giant brush....When I saved as a psd it got a bit blurry?
40 minutes
Ehm... right about what? I said nothing (???)
I use Classic btw, dunno if 7 has layers, but C doesn't, so I can save as a tiff.
09 September 2002, 06:26 AM
Jeroentje- This is what I was refering to form another thread..I probably took it out of context but it helped me....
you wrote--->Quote: "Yep...
Take one of the big hairy brushes (coarse hair or something) and set it to big. And I mean really big. Work from dark to light and what you showed us would have taken you 2 minutes..."
09 September 2002, 01:00 AM
The best CGTalk thread ever!!!
I too only have Classic painter. And I have never achieved the results you have, jeroentje.:thumbsup:
I think the best way for Version 7 users is to not switch from Painter to Pshop is not to Psd the files. You kinda have to bring them in as flat images, to keep them as sharp. (tiff, jpegMax,EPS)
I could be wrong, I havent used painter since v6 but I had the same problems.
09 September 2002, 07:04 AM
09 September 2002, 07:10 AM
Sleepless, is that like Abraham Lincoln btw? ;)
09 September 2002, 10:33 AM
per hand :) not cg just scanned
done in ~20 min
09 September 2002, 01:51 PM
20 mins / ps7 / no reference
I'm a bit of a painting newbie.. need to work on shading.
09 September 2002, 02:36 PM
This thread is getting huge! Here's a face painted from a ref with harsh shadows. It took about 15 min, but the lower half of the face was out of proportion, too large. After a second look, I corrected it.
09 September 2002, 02:41 PM
Here's another done w/o any ref. ~30 min. I'll need to practice my skies and clouds a bit more. Looks great at thumbnail size though :D
I can attribute inspiration for this to Tom Thompson... Canadian landscape painter ca. 1915.
09 September 2002, 02:46 PM
And one more (I don't have net access at home right now, so I have to batch post off a floppy :annoyed: )
I struggled with this one for about an hour.. not really satisfied with it, especially the background.
I call this "Buddha As A Officer of The Peoples Republic of China Sitting At A Sidewalk Cafe in Shanghai". It's based on an earlier sketch.
09 September 2002, 06:41 PM
jeroentje-----> an actor from a stage production, portraying Honest Abe.
09 September 2002, 08:05 PM
He, So I wasn't that far off for a non-Americain :)
Nothing is set in stone...then again I could be wrong (Im pretty new in these forums too). I think this was just meant to be some fun. Just to see how fast one can paint something.
4 mins 13 secs : Photoshop
ps7 n a mouse
09 September 2002, 05:16 AM
cadmium red medium for lunch. truly a doodle. Painter7
bM_ -> I'm all over the place style wise with my digital paints. Someday I'll lock into something but these are experimental. I just like screwing around with as much texture as possible. This is not the kinda work I will ever get paid's more like art therapy.
09 September 2002, 12:37 PM
i don't want to loose the honor to post after the great sleeplees
so here i'am (again on my own....)
i'm a dreamer....a foolish one
I love theese themed threads, how about we start another.
Someone up for starting a Portrait or self potrait thread.
If i had a self portraid id done it myself. :)
But if someone has one then im gonna continue..
Other themes are also welcome, like nature images, cities, robots, feelings and so on..
09 September 2002, 05:29 PM
Cool thread!
This is my contribution, 5-10 mn on Painter 6.0.
09 September 2002, 05:51 PM
Nice work everyone, your colours are interesting, Sleepless.
Pancreas, really liked that city picture, the brush strokes are very full of life..
anyways, here's a quickie:
09 September 2002, 06:06 PM
nice one Notic..
Welcome :)
hälsningar från sverige :)
09 September 2002, 06:13 PM
Going for a creepy demon theme on this page, i guess.
15 min. pencil (original image, 40cmx28cm) and then about 20 min, playing with Pshop, cut and paste together and then tuning.
09 September 2002, 08:46 AM
Here's a study from ref. about 1 hour. It's not good, but I think I could do it better next time. Probably quicker, also.
09 September 2002, 05:27 PM
Hello everyone, I've been browsing here for a while and have finally made time to do some cg and post so here it is.... I had no idea what to do so I just put my finger down and moved that mouse around... here's what I got after 20 minutes. I'm new to corel paint I've only got V7 the select edition, used a mouse and the chalk brush, smear and smudge.
09 September 2002, 07:15 PM
I'm not happy with the head and the legs but what ever it's only a 30 min thing
09 September 2002, 03:01 AM
about 1 hour of fun with a mouse and painter...
09 September 2002, 03:38 AM
09 September 2002, 01:02 PM
wildsheepchase- nice restricted color scheme on the braided head.
Drek. impasto experiment, worth another try someday.
09 September 2002, 03:39 AM
Did it in 38 mim !!:buttrock:
09 September 2002, 04:27 AM
I still not real confident with the whole wacom thing. PS in 25 min. The "finished" version is in the self potraits thread.
09 September 2002, 06:29 AM
09 September 2002, 07:05 AM
Great work again Sleepless :)
Have you seen "All quiet on the western front"?
He reminds me a bit of Ernest Borgnine.
09 September 2002, 08:11 AM
sleepless is really living up to his name. The guy is a machine.
I didn't paint this, but I like it anyway.
Good old, pencil and paper. (20 min. during a lecture at school)
09 September 2002, 08:54 AM
25-30 minutes in PS
09 September 2002, 12:23 PM
I have a broken tablet
I have a broken tablet...
Oh I wish I had a working tablet
09 September 2002, 05:53 PM
Nice ones folks. Keep em coming, it's great practice for learning the tools and observation skills. If you gotta work with a mouse you might set the stroke to fade. Kinda a cool look but difficult to draw with outlines.
dmc-- sometimes I get so tired but life is short, when you're in the mood.
I can't stop myself, toooo much fun.
09 September 2002, 09:41 PM
Wow...thats awesome sleepless..very you use ref's or do you just paint from memory??
09 September 2002, 10:52 PM
distortedrealty- Thanks, I've been using ref on these. I really needed to get away from my standard male face I've been drawing for yrs. and learn some new standards. Every time I work from ref a tiny bit of it translates to later characters drawn from scratch. IMO I went too long without using ref for my illo work (5 yrs at least). It became a big part of my "style" but now it's time to study again.
09 September 2002, 02:24 AM
'bout an hour
09 September 2002, 02:41 AM
Trying some different things on this.
40 min.
09 September 2002, 03:12 AM
Another testie
30 min
Was bored, continued.
50 min
Was even more bored, made "art" :)
80 min
09 September 2002, 07:03 AM
Really nice stuff going on in here guys...
A speed paint and a self portrait all in one :)...about 20 minutes in photoshop...Think I'll do a longer one soon..
09 September 2002, 10:46 PM
Ok heres my first try at a speed paint. 20 minutes in Painter Classic and like 30 seconds for the background in Photoshop. What do you think?
10 October 2002, 03:54 AM
maybe 20 minutes? forgot to time it
10 October 2002, 06:17 PM
oops, when all else fails add tubes and wires to the face. It's part of the genre.....
10 October 2002, 07:14 PM
ehy [sleeplees]timlee[sleeplees] why don't u leave your alter ego Karen Lee post here?
great talento who is she ? yuo wife
hoping not be too curouios
10 October 2002, 08:40 PM
The "Sleeplees" LOL. She's shown no interest in working digitally yet but she knows it will happen sometime. I'll try and get her to post. We met in art school, she is mostly into children's work right now.
ps. we never crit each other's work, only praise. We can't leave the office and go home at quiting time..hah hah.
10 October 2002, 05:21 AM
Sleepless, i love your work. truly incredible style.
anyway, here's my first speed paint...done in about 40-50 minutes. not very speedy, but it's too hard to stop when you're only at the halfway point.
10 October 2002, 06:45 PM
Oh boy :D my very first drawing on my wacom intuos2 tablet I just bought, damn :D it's really fun to do, took me about 15 minutes, I know; it ain't much of a drawing, but it's a start innit? :D
please tell me what you think.
Looking good, though! Nice palette going on in that one:love:
10 October 2002, 08:40 AM
I still need a lot of practice to improve my drawing skills and I need to get used to drawing on a wacom tablet, but anyway, here's my third wacom drawing; took me 8 minutes, hope you see what it is.
please tell me what I should change in my way of drawing :)
10 October 2002, 03:39 PM
ReinS, if U use bigger and softer brushes U'll get a smoother result. Use smaller brushes for fine details like eyes and eyebrows
10 October 2002, 04:00 PM
great thread... good work everyone :applause:
