If you want to show images that are over 20k you need to provide a link to it on your own webserver.

waiting for painter 8

i was looking a x-men comic

06 June 2003, 12:33 AM
This thread is realy cool! Lot's of impressive stuff!!

I just wonder if most of you uses references or are you just painting all the cool stuff from the back of your head?

I hope I have somethig to show here soon... :-D

06 June 2003, 05:06 PM
Filipinho :I just wonder if most of you uses references or are you just painting all the cool stuff from the back of your head?

Both. Some use reference and some just paint from their imagination.

The idea here is to feel free to paint as loose or as tight as you want. Just have fun. Its a great place to practice and learn.

Dont worry about trying to make a finished painting.

Have fun.

06 June 2003, 11:43 PM

06 June 2003, 08:59 PM
hey JFMG

are your sketches "Wheel of Time series" inspired?'s mine...around 40 min for this one.

and this one was more like an hour...

06 June 2003, 12:46 AM
Wheels of time?
i dont know the series ^_^;
i guess not.
they are all from my mind, or some are fan art.

I Try to mix up 2 images in my mind and sketch a single one with those 2

06 June 2003, 05:01 AM
The Wheel of Time is a VERY LONG tolkien-esque book series - each of the books is as long as the entire LOTR trilogy and there are nine so far.

It's a sort of Medieval setting with a lot of dark characters...

06 June 2003, 05:31 PM
Is the series just as good? 'Cuz I think I'm interested now. Even though I've never read any LOTR books... but I hear they're good. :p

06 June 2003, 05:43 PM
Wheel of Time (Robert Jordan) (

I stopped reading after 4 books, when I found out there are enough books to fill my bookshelve, and the story goes on and on and on.... It's quite good though.

For more discussions on wheel of time, check out theWheel of Time forum (

06 June 2003, 06:28 PM
yeah it's a sweet series...It's quite good...I'm really into it...the only thing that sucks about it is that,'s 9 books long, and it's not finished yet...and the author "Robert Jordan" makes us wait 1-2 years for the next book...I'm impatient that way...

06 June 2003, 10:29 PM
Man.. you guys, this is the coolest thread I've encountered in my puny life! Hope it never dies, so here are some oldies of mine.

Most of them created when exploring ps and illustrator. Ship is a real quicky, goal was to made it look like authentic painting. Rest r just mindwanderers. average time a piece is 40 mins think, yeah I'm slow ;)

These are not all that but this thing inspired me so I'm painting as I write, there are lots of great artists in here btw  And yeah nice one william, 30min wiehoo, would've figured it to be an paintbrush job

06 June 2003, 11:25 PM
well 1st one in a long time, ps 7 mouse, took bout 30min, more on backgroundtesting though :wip:

how u show the image in the post instead of url btw?

06 June 2003, 07:21 AM

06 June 2003, 07:26 PM
Hi all, back again, guess a bit enthousiastic since I'm new here ;)

Anyways can you guys help me out, I really need some good tips on colouring sketches in with ps7.0 (except from using a tablet :annoyed: )

I mean I made this sketch in 10min, colouring took me 35 min, and I think I still like the sketch more  What ya think?

06 June 2003, 04:30 PM
here's a parrot i did in painter in about 30 mins

06 June 2003, 05:44 PM
you should add some smooth shadows to it, I think you could make this ahve a great 3d look, make the shadows nice and all round, sky background or something would make it even more attractive

Keep up the art, cheers

06 June 2003, 04:23 AM

06 June 2003, 11:47 AM
nice ones rey & violenza, (liked rey last one best though :P)

u2 kaktuswasser, only you should do something with the background, or at least ad some more contrast between back and foreground to make image a bit more alive and kicking, even simple texture with blur would probs help alot.

Thnx for keeping this thing rolling guys

06 June 2003, 08:51 PM
thanks for your comment! I will now always do a bit background :)

06 June 2003, 11:08 PM

"June 28th, 2065: discovery of hoes on Venus."

Just something goofy from the weekend. The idea of scientists going ga-ga over trashy alien girls amuses me.

07 July 2003, 12:53 AM
That's just great ballistic, as were your other posts in this thread. Somehow your lightning has this realistic impressive feel. :buttrock:

07 July 2003, 12:03 AM
This took entirely too long, but it the second thing I ever drew with flash, so I don't know what to think. This took about a half an hour. I paid too much attention to detail you can't even see.
Be kind...

07 July 2003, 11:00 AM
This is a product of about 20 min of an opencanvas session with me and my little brother (who's back in the states). what do you think?

Got time for another one, this time photo referenced. Done within an hour...

07 July 2003, 08:50 PM

07 July 2003, 10:27 PM

50 min, done as a pre-study for a underwater fantasy mermaid painting.
Also done for a upcoming speedpaintin tutorial for newbies :)

(reference used on the side)

07 July 2003, 10:04 PM
2 hrs to come out the final.......normal brush...painter7...

07 July 2003, 01:00 AM
60 min, study. Airplane reference used on the side.
Trying to learn depth, feeling of scale.. Next up is
a big hangar study.

07 July 2003, 01:10 AM

2.5 hours, no ref. Really struggled (and failed) with the composition on this one. I might try the same subject again, from a better angle.

07 July 2003, 02:23 AM
Argh, study and practise on space, air and depth..
My first try so i guess if i do like 100 more perhaps it
don't look like crap..

60 min

40 min

Dave Black
07 July 2003, 03:53 AM
balistic: Regardless of the composition issues, the atmosphere and mood is really breathtaking. You nailed that withou reference, and I gotta say, I'm impressed.

bM_: I really dig those. Lovely mood and colors. As a casual observer and a terrible speed painter, I can only say this: The lighting is off. In the second pic, the lighting from those panels/skylights is so bright, that the bounce from it should be huge.

Keep at it though, these have slot of promise.

07 July 2003, 04:07 PM

08 August 2003, 03:48 PM
Photoshop 6, 45mins, and yes, I know it's poo.

08 August 2003, 05:38 PM
3DZ, Nice clouds, I tried some clouds awhile ago. Your use of a hard brush is obviously necessary, though it seemed counter intuitive to me at the time. Clouds should be soft, but they need a hard brush to be painted. Nice work.

Dave Black
08 August 2003, 06:05 PM
Yeah, hardbrushes are the key, and you're totally right, it's completly counter-intuitive. I remeber seeing a tutorial a while back. It taught me alot. Let me see if I can find it...

Edit: Found it. Have a look. It really makes more sense after reading it.

08 August 2003, 11:25 PM
One of the best tutorials on realistic clouds.

08 August 2003, 12:58 AM

08 August 2003, 02:07 PM
Looking good.. mine is not really a speed paint as it's my first.. but i figured i wanted some feedback... here ya go :D an apple !

08 August 2003, 06:18 PM
well for a first I'd say its good, Its got a good style and your brush strokes are ok, the thing your lacking is a solid shape to the apple, it doesn't seem to actualy sit in theoretical space at all... So i guess in normal terms, PErspective is off.

08 August 2003, 06:43 PM
:)my first post here

Yeah i know.. it's basically not drawn on a surface, and i got worked up in some shadow detail that wound up getting the bottom of the apple all screwed up shading... so i kinda fixed it the best i could, but i wasnt all happy with the bottom of it :D

But hey it's my first attemp, so all in all i'm happy with it :DGonna do much better in the future i hope.

Thx for the critique

08 August 2003, 10:50 PM
90 min, just for practise, it was in front of me on my desk.
Last year i did same thing on my Nokia 7110, and have now upgraded to 3650.

08 August 2003, 11:24 PM
looks great bm, cool simple paint style, dunno also kinda antic, authentic paint style used for a modern gimmick, looks funny (as in good :applause: )

08 August 2003, 11:32 PM

About 10 minutes - Please excuse the lack of talent(or practice perhaps) amid such great pictures! :)

I was thinking of the Myth game series at the time.

09 September 2003, 10:41 AM

Degenerate in paint-chat~

09 September 2003, 03:37 PM
Each of these took about 15 mins in Microsoft Paint. w/ Wacom.

Microsoft Paint is the best program to use for speedpaints and quick concept drawings on my laptop, since it is very responsive...

09 September 2003, 07:23 PM
Just messing around in PS7, 1HR.

09 September 2003, 08:29 AM
Hi Sleepless

09 September 2003, 09:59 AM
Had to waste some time and wanted to try to paint totally different to how i usually paint.
20 minutes or so (photo ref)

09 September 2003, 06:10 AM
ET-It's cool trying something different, but always difficult to break those old conventions.
Carlocki- Hi, no I have never thought about doing a graphic novel. I wouldn't know where to begin.

Another sports guy for me, this is not what I normally do either so I'm "trying to break out of my own little box"

09 September 2003, 02:26 PM

09 September 2003, 09:50 PM

You could make a free .tk domain at for the forums.
That way you'll know every entry that came from came from a forum ;)

10 October 2003, 11:55 AM
hi Jer

10 October 2003, 07:10 AM
starting to feel very lonely here. where are all the speed freaks?

10 October 2003, 11:39 AM
Sleepless, donīt feel alone, no better company than a dog!

10 October 2003, 01:08 PM
Okay have been lurking here for some months now. And have finally got brave enough to post something.

Don't do a lot of speed paints but this falls into that catagory;

20 minutes painter 7

10 October 2003, 06:12 AM
Thanks, I feel better now.

10 October 2003, 10:24 PM
Once again... wolf this time :)

10 October 2003, 10:24 PM
Once again... wolf this time :)

10 October 2003, 07:56 AM
dont you guys feel like your work gets lost in here, I mean this deep into a thread with over 900 posts?

at first I thought it was cool, but I dont know if I'd want to post something in this thread, would anyone ever see it, much less respond to it..

maybe it would be better if we had a monthly speed paint least that would be some organization, and would offer more incentive to post...

anyway that being said...there are some really awesome pieces of talent in here...well done all!!

10 October 2003, 08:25 AM
Well i like posting here (the little i actually paint) caus it's just this casual thread, with no high standards. Everybody is nice here and comes with some nice critique on your speed paints ;)

Feels so good in one large speedpainting thread :D

10 October 2003, 12:55 AM
Yeah. Plus, I'm seeing some more inspiring stuff here than in the 2D gallery itself. I think if you spend 2 weeks on something, you overwork it, and if you spend 2 minutes on it, you get it just right.

10 October 2003, 03:29 PM
I'm with Swoop and Lunchbox. I don't really care if it gets lost and maybe that's a good thing. It's a casual thread and more theraputic art than labored finished stuff. I think of these as a way to get loose, make mistakes and just enjoy the process.

10 October 2003, 07:35 PM
Yeah.. it's like sketching without thinking can be fun and relaxing ;)

Dont really care if it's "lost, like tears in the rain" (hehe couldtn help myself).

10 October 2003, 07:50 PM
thats cool, i wasnt trying to start anything... I just think there is some beautiful work in hear that deserves its own thread, I just cant keep up or have the time to keep up with a thread that is over 900 posts long......thats all I'm saying...but if it works for you then thats cool too.

10 October 2003, 10:24 PM
Heres one I did some time ago, I havent done any recently. I am not sure what actually constitutes a speed painting (time-wise)but for me I think anything under an hour is speedy. ;)

Sorry about the size.

10 October 2003, 03:46 PM
Roughly an hour.

Woohoo, this thread is almost at the 1000-post mark.

10 October 2003, 09:05 AM
Eveil Admin pic .. awsome. I like it... like the bit rough looks, while it still maintains pretty good detail ;)

Sea Slug .. ehhe .. made me laugh actually ;) ;) ;)

Great work :D gotta get some work done myself soon :D

10 October 2003, 02:09 AM
just got my wacom intuos this week and i thought i'd join the action. i made this in under an hour.

10 October 2003, 08:25 AM
maybe not a paint ;) but i did this in about 10mins.

10 October 2003, 01:49 AM
Uff, its been a while since I painted, and this more or less my first serious attempt at a digital speed paint. Its a nice break from modeling, though.

Blew my initial deadline of half an hour as it turned rather fast into an hour.

10 October 2003, 09:26 PM
Tree of emotions...of mine...

10 October 2003, 09:59 PM
Wow Tiger 1313, how long did that take you? Its great!

That looks A LOT like the professor in the beginning of the film "Waking Life" that talks about existentialism for a little bit. Almost uncanny. Is... this a coincidence, or have I just seen enough movies to know the inspiration for that?
Nice job nevertheless.

10 October 2003, 08:23 AM
i think you've just seen too many movies ;) hehe.

10 October 2003, 09:16 AM

10 October 2003, 07:27 PM

10 October 2003, 09:42 AM

About 3 hours, so it's not super speedy. I've been unemployed and under-motivated for a couple months, so I feel a little rusty with the Wacom. Thanks for the feedback.

10 October 2003, 12:33 AM

My Fault

What the... unemployed??!!?? How bad is it out there when someone with your abilities is unemployed.

Great piece BTW. It's amazing how much your painted work has improved over the years. Sacrificing sheep to the Spooge Demon has paid off :)

10 October 2003, 09:36 PM
Hobbit?? :)

10 October 2003, 05:16 PM
This one is an expression of my feelings...

10 October 2003, 05:47 PM
5 minute doodle, Painter Classic...

10 October 2003, 07:09 PM
vincent vangogh?

10 October 2003, 11:37 PM
my first speed post. i think this was about 30 minutes...

10 October 2003, 11:45 PM
Oooowl, again! speedy in Painter and PS (~10 min)

10 October 2003, 11:48 PM
~30 min (PS+wacom)

11 November 2003, 12:27 AM
40 min or so in PS (this one was hard cause the source photo's lighting was so "in your face"...)

11 November 2003, 07:11 PM
5min ps sketch, just a go at some speedy aquarell style, now see it lacks any depth or emotion, better luck next time, and really need to get myself a wacom :( ah well, just needed a break from the alienware chall.

Nice work ballastic, butterfly guy ;) and skippy (liked your previous one alot.

[edit: forgot the pic lol]

11 November 2003, 11:42 PM
SKippyMcHaggis : very, very nice :) I like this style of painting :)

A Forest :

11 November 2003, 02:21 AM
thanks for the compliments. it's nice when they come from people who's work i respect.

another 30-40 min PS paint:

here's an update...slightly more depth with a couple more minutes of paint...

11 November 2003, 02:27 AM
i just realized looking at the paints i've done, that the first one is the only one with a good feeling of depth. the use of the reddish colors on the shadow helped to exagerate it, and these other paints i've played it too conservative on the color...

which makes me there a tutorial anywhere with how to make custom pallates in PS7? i can mess with the ones i have, but i'd rather not lose them as defaults...

thanks for the info.

**edit**i dun spel gud

11 November 2003, 06:08 AM

I like your forest painting. It looks kinda spooky.

11 November 2003, 07:48 AM
here's another one...

baby skin is really hard to paint, IMO

oh and tiger1313, congrat's on the front page post!

11 November 2003, 05:32 PM
With a Matrix Revolutions poster as a reference.

11 November 2003, 02:18 AM
well, I just got my tablet about a week ago... still getting usd to painter (which i also started using a week ago) but this is a "messy" sketch I made in 20 mins (I like the messy style)
