01-28-2003, 06:09 AM
I found this in my private mailbox here. I asked Sleepless about his technique in the first few paintings of this thread -

My biggest cheat is.....paint in greyscale or monochromatic first then adjust the color. It's almost like colorizing a photo or laying out a traditional oil painting. I always work on a medium colored background so you only have to paint in the light and the dark shapes. (White paper scares me)

I must have forgotten this little bit of wisdom - but it inspired me to try speed painting again. It's not as speedy as it should be, I spend some time cleaning up edges and tinkering around as i always seem to do (1hr)

01-29-2003, 05:04 PM

Indeed! Beers for you, beers for me, beers for Sleepless for way-back starting this thread, beer for everybody that posts in this thread and beers for the priest, I hope he's not so morally pure that he doesn't drink

Very nice painting - I'll have to grab that Painter trial.

Today a mate from university called me and told me classes start tomorrow. Monday! I thought i could be couched in front the pc till thursday! 02-07-2003, 04:11 AM
hi design man,

nice drawing, i cant decide what to say, should i take the normal cgtalk reply and say "whoa holy **** thats ****ing hot   "
nah i'll give you some nice comments.

The lighting might seem a bit bright, and the reflection on the front scoop looks a bit funny, otherwise nice work doughnut puncher

02-07-2003, 11:08 AM
Eh ... I haven't done one of these in awhile. And I know, this isn't exactly a paint. But it was speedy. My wife called me at work this evening and said she'd like me to draw some sort of dragon for one of her kids that she teaches. He wants to be an artist and my wife feels that this would give him some inspiration. So, last thing I do at work - I crank this Lhasa Apso Dragon out in about 20 minutes.

Sorry, mate, I believe I donīt. I sure did it with more res but had some trouble sending it here with that res. It was always too big or too packed. Then I accidently saved that one over the original high-res pic... So, now would be a good chance to advice a poor little newbie who canīt even post his pics correctly.

Now that I got the hang of it, had to try to colour it up, hereīs what I came up with... Maybe additional half an hour or a little more. Letīs say total hour and a half. Salute to all of you who really really can get the feel of a realistic lighting. I made my best effort. Wacom painting 2.1 from me.

02-25-2003, 10:03 AM
Well.. i was going to start a thread..but here it is waiting for me...
This is maybe 15-30 mins in Alias Sketchbook (the free version). I'm just starting to get into digital painting, I like this software's super simple interface and smooth pressuresensitivity. Keeps the distraction of photoshop's bells and whistle out of the question.

Let me know what you think?

02-25-2003, 06:16 PM
WOW.. i like it.. gonna try out that software :) i like sketches :D

02-26-2003, 04:03 PM
around 15 minutes,

I used a home made thin oval like brush for the whole picture, after that i used 1 filter to give it the weird effect.

02-27-2003, 09:04 AM
OK, here's another 15 mins...hope it's not too 'obscene' for the department of total information awareness....

<image removed>

02-27-2003, 12:14 PM
Redfuzz, that last image really went overboard. Although the first image you posted is still acceptable, the second one is actually pornographic. Please refrain from posting images of that nature again here.

02-27-2003, 06:05 PM
Hey Leigh...
I'm not going to get into an argument over what is and isn't pornographic. That debate will rage on long after you and I are in the ground. It's not my it were.
Kirt said he would talk it over with the other mods and see what the word is.
Either way, it feels like time to shift gears...

02-28-2003, 12:57 AM
Redfuzz, yup a debate about the definition of "pornographic" is certainly out of the question (yeah, I watched The People vs Larry Flynt), perhaps that was the wrong phrase to use.

Nudity is fine in art, since it is the best way to portray the human figure. That is really not a problem.
The reason I removed that particular image is because it portrayed a sexual act, and that is something that offends many people. It's also not really fitting for this forum.

Thanks for understanding

(And in case you think I found it objectionable because I am female, that really isn't the case, since I am extremely liberal ;))

So go wild with nudes, that's not a problem at all! Just tone down a bit with the "action" shots :p

Thanks a lot :)

02-28-2003, 06:58 AM

I've never been a fan of tutorials, because I think the whole process of trial and error and discovery are lost when you go the tutorial route, however... Stahlberg's cloud tutorial is the best and easiest one I've seen, bar none. It lets you create realistic clouds with unlimited detail, with ease. Go check it out.

Looks like you blended too much. Needs sharper contrasts and brighter highlights.

03-07-2003, 06:59 PM
First try with my new Wacom tablet. It seems it will take time to be comfortable with (about 10 minutes for this :annoyed: )

03-11-2003, 12:00 AM

Probably took about 15 minutes while watching TV.

04-27-2003, 03:38 AM
Mecha, openCanvas 1.1...
I'm not sure exactly how long this took. Maybe a couple of hours not including the break I took before starting on the shading. That is fast for me...I'm a real slowpoke.

04-27-2003, 04:15 AM
amazing use of OC :)

04-27-2003, 12:41 PM
Great work sunbane, its really good I usually work on OC 1.1 too but never did such an amazing work like u. Well DOne
Keep up the good work

04-27-2003, 06:40 PM
Thank you guys! =)

I actually like oC a lot. Although it's simplistic, it's small, direct and very versatile. =)

I figure I'd give the speed paint thread a shot.
This image was done in photoshop starting from scratch.
I just started sketching in photoshop and this is what I ended up with. It took about 45 min.

04-29-2003, 04:43 AM

Im starting to get a bit more comfortable with my tablet. Now all I need is some planning skills that will prevent me from starting to draw a huge mouth 200px from the top edge of the canvas :hmm:

04-29-2003, 11:56 PM
Quick sketch, maybe 30 min or so. I'm practising some colour use. Tried muted pastel shades.

05-06-2003, 04:17 PM
Thanks Kheemo. Chrome's pretty easy to paint, you just have to think of it as a non-planar mirror.

05-07-2003, 06:34 PM
Balistic : humm Im gonna try painting chrome next time :P

that one took me the afternoon ..approx 2h30-3h in photoshop with a ref pic

not much of a speed painting ..but it dosnt deserve a thread just for it so I'll post it here..

05-07-2003, 08:17 PM
OK i just bought the Art of finding nemo.. REally good book and was inspired to start a little project. Anyways this is just a test. ( no the project isnt about a fish ) The test isnt original artwork either its based on a color composition in the book though its not EXACTLY the same. Its based on something Ralph Eggleston did which can be found on page 157. The test was to test some brushes and trying to get a similar effect. I think im getting there.
Expect to see more of these ( this time orginal work ). Im doing this in efforts of getting better at colour and lighting .
