Thanks guys.

Wow, mV. It's so textured yet your strokes and clean. I gotta learn how to do that.

Dekus: No ref for that one... but I should be using. Every now and then I mention software and time if I remember. That one took just under 3 hrs I guess (had problems with the face).

This one took 2 hrs, pscs2. (no face, haha!)

08-17-2006, 12:44 AM
thanks guys : yeoh, goro, coolie again!

that orange exhaust is wayy too dark, and the values suck on that pic overal. But ah well, I guess the dynamic is not bad.

08-17-2006, 07:30 AM
m@ - I am absolutely in love with the bridge picture. The light autumnal forest in the background against the cool shades in the foreground, the aura in that arc and the textured treetops are just....

08-17-2006, 09:13 AM
mv: Whoa! dude!! That is Amazing!! so dynamic. The lighting and the colors are awesome!!! yea.. i agree.. the exhaust fire should be a bit lighter... Your a Pro!

Whoa some awesome work here Dekus, samsonreaper, koshime ... good stuff.

samsonreaper, do you use a ruler to get your lines so straight? or do you use the shift key? ... or just freehand ?

I really should contribute to this thread again soon...

Fuge: wow... Thank you very much dude! hmm.. at least i do lines with the Shift key.. i guess its the easiest way..

You've gotta be kidding, you're doing great squibbit! I think speedpainting is more about testing ideas than painting fast. If an idea is not working after 10 mins of work, try another :).

As you command EAD! 2hs, cs2

Todays: 151 minutes of fighting with the painting! :P

08-28-2006, 07:51 AM
Yeoh - I am always stunned by the beauty of your paintings. How you juxtapose the body parts in the shades and those which are exposed to bright light is just...aaargh!

08-28-2006, 12:18 PM
Yeah, Yeoh's getting really good at knowing which object (be it body part, mechanical arm, gun point) to juxtapose or illuminate...) you could say, he's almsot a master of light painting..adn light is everything

Hate to say it , but he's 2D might soon surpass his 3D skills? makinghim uber at both!

08-28-2006, 01:43 PM
1 hour speedpaint challenge I took part in, had to paint a portrait of that thing in V for Vendetta (I, sadly, haven't seen the movie yet). Photoshop crashed atleast 8 times, and boy was I annoyed when I kept losing progress. I lost atleast 10-15 minutes of work. Argh. Reinstalling Windows and Photoshop as soon as I've moved all my files to cd's (sigh...).

08-28-2006, 06:48 PM

Still trying to get the colours right....even though I tried complimentary red vs green ..still not quite there...

08-28-2006, 10:28 PM
Thanks Mu, Kosh. I guess I picked it up from mr. mullins?.. he usually keeps the heads of his characters out of the sun, which makes sense when you think about it. When we go for shade, we care most about getting our heads in the shadow (bright sun hurt eyes!).

Heh, masterhood is a long ways off if even possible. That said, I'd gladly sacrifice 3D skills toward that goal :D.

Koshime: I find that when working with complementary colours, I have to pick one to be more saturated and really subdue the other.

08-28-2006, 11:52 PM
Hey goro... was that last one inspired by the new Superman Returns movie by any chance ?

08-29-2006, 12:10 AM
Goro : nice

08-29-2006, 01:24 AM
Yeoh and MV : even though I've only just started posting here I've scrolled through many of the pages of this thread and i ahve to say you guys are an absolute insperation, the consistant quality just blows me away. I can only hope to be as good as either of you one day..

In the mean time--->

08-30-2006, 07:32 PM
Thanks Audit, Wasker, Arowe & Dekus: I look up mv myself. His values are just so natural, and concepts lovely!

Audit> mmm... nice and warm. I like :)

Here's something a little less rendered:

40 min of lassoing and transform, lol! 20 min quick colors.

EDIT: Apologies to mv. I neglected to mention that this image was created as a result of playing with his brushes. The dominant brush pattern in this image is from his shared set.

08-30-2006, 09:18 PM
As I said on the other forum, I like your rider but the horse is a bit abstract
Anyways, here's my latest, ~1h + photoref.

08-30-2006, 09:57 PM
today's contrib. working on lighting. 132 m

08-30-2006, 10:06 PM

I really like the abstract form of both the rider and the horse. Strong style while anatomically still convincing, meaning you did not sacrifice "realness" to style, if that makes sense...:D

How did you go about it? Does lassoing/transform mean you did not use brushes but only transformed selections which you filled?

Could you elaborate a bit on that? I know it's not a tutorial thread, but you can feel free to ignore me and, well, "asking is always for free" as we say here in Germany...:D

08-30-2006, 10:44 PM
I suspect its more of

random abstract rough brush with dark colours.
erase out with abstract shaped brushes..with patterns..
shaped to form the best fit...

and wallah!!!

08-30-2006, 10:45 PM
Great stuff again, everyone! :)

That RoboKing-Speedpainting took about 2 hours:

I hope you like it.

Hey Guys Love your work and Love this thread!

Err... just trying to do some product design concept I guess ... 2 hrs photoshop. I'm not sure what it is, but I think its some sort of a stereo system mixed with a pair of binoculars.

08-31-2006, 12:19 AM
ikuru: Those are pretty good for a first try with an intuos. Do you have any background in the traditional arts ?

koshime : It think the lighting is great in that one. Do you use any references for your work?

08-31-2006, 12:25 AM
yeoh - cheers. that horsie is amazing - if i may ask, is it custom brushes making those intricate patterns? do you have image files?
koshime - great 'contribution' :)

a villain and a table :surprised

08-31-2006, 12:32 AM
ikuru: Those are pretty good for a first try with an intuos. Do you have any background in the traditional arts ?

Thanx Man! ;)

Yeah well I do paint some watercollor, and I allways been drawing bw comics etc and did go to some artschool sort off, but no serious painting skillz. :D

08-31-2006, 11:05 AM
more painter madness.... 1hr

ikuru: what type of comics do you draw? Superhero, cartoon, sci fi, ect? Do you have any examples online?

08-31-2006, 12:27 PM
ikuru: what type of comics do you draw? Superhero, cartoon, sci fi, ect? Do you have any examples online?

if you check out my webpage klick portfolio and then the botom link called "mainstream comics". There you will be able to browse my style.
I would say if anything I´m inspiered by masters such as Robert Crumb (psychadelic comic artist who did Fritz the cat among other stuff in the 70s).

Btw, Yeoh: Your style is so cool. Should I be making my own brushes in PhotoShop to reach this kind of Zen perfection?

08-31-2006, 02:12 PM
I forgot to mention an important point, that a lot of that piece is using one of mv's brushes (thanks again dude)... a very spirally and pleasing pattern. So it is custom shapes, but from mv's set. My own shapes are more shattered-like than spiralled. Making your own is simple, just trace some fancy pattern and define it as a brush tip. Make it scatter random, size random, etc. I also have a different pattern on in dual brush mode to make it even more crazy.

Koshime is right on the money... just take a brush that scatters a shape around, scribble... then use it in eraser mode, erase. Lasso & transforms to massage it into something readable, then render over (or under). The tricky part is seeing something in the mess... sometimes there's just too many possibilities, it's hard to pick the best one to refine.

Sorry for the paintless post, had to credit the brushes to their original creator... speedpaint will come in a bit :)

08-31-2006, 02:22 PM
then let me add my monochromic speed

08-31-2006, 04:16 PM
Yeoh: Whoa... thats amazinng! ( the horse picture...) such abstract and still cool!
koshime: great works!

damn.. i dont have time to sketch at all... i mean in photoshop... well .. at least im sketching on a paper. ;)

08-31-2006, 05:40 PM
Yeoh, thanx for advice.
Is there any nice painbrushes out there readymade for us, the lazy people?

Anyhow today I made this Bird, well I found a dead bird took a pic and then I painted it, Im not tracing the photo, just used it for refference and color, It was readymade in 30 min but then I could not let it be without aftertouch, so I will have to say Less than 100 minutes alltogether.

Btw could someone give me advice on how/where you guys uppload your speedpaintings?
I have to compress pretty hard to get things up in this thread....

08-31-2006, 07:06 PM

08-31-2006, 10:02 PM
Yeoh : I was amazed to see that use of my brush :D very cool!

ikuru : you can load my brushes here :

Samsonsreaper : very cool ! too bad the high key values are so similar all over the pic. A bit more differene between the BG high values and the character's highlights would have added more depth I think.

08-31-2006, 10:44 PM
ikuru : you can load my brushes here :

I will make sure to put them in good use!
Btw your Dragon Hunter Chick Is one of my favorite pics.

Been starting to do super-quickie sketches in hopes of improving my sense of form and weight and such. Since I didn't feel like doing sketchy figures in all sorts of poses today, I decided to make a Super DeathBot.

Then my brother came by and suggested that the DeathBot needed an opponent. A Savage Disney Warrior Princess opponent. So, staying with the same sort of style:

Nice dynamic in that last one SamsonsReaper. Not sure about your systematic very high contrast use though. Maybe you could try coloring the shadows (a lighten layer with some texturish thing? ) or being more subtle in the highlights. Keep up the good work anyway!

Nice one, Supervlieg. Looks like you were 'inspired' by Goro, ha ha. Baraka was always an interesting character to me too. Looks kind of Gollum-ish in this portrayal.

Some inspiring stuff being done here, really enjoy watching the thought process and how you guys formulate your ideas. Wonderful!

I feel like I can't comment without contributing, so a small drop in the ocean from me (PS, 2 - 3h, not that fast! I tried to limit the colour palette):

yeoh: your pictures feel very moody and alive. great job.

Thanks ACantarel! :)

3 hrs 38 min:
Yeoh, this is by far one of the best wacom pics Ivé seen.
I think it´s perfect the way it is. If you worked on it more it would not have been better I think, the quick lines and the roughnes in your style ads to the feeling.
Well Done Mate!

09-17-2006, 11:57 AM
Damn yeoh, that one's amazing ! :bounce: Did you use any references at all? Also, how did you work the shinyness around those circles on the guy's shirt ?

09-17-2006, 01:32 PM

A litle Inspiered by your composition Yeoh. 1 hour.

09-17-2006, 06:03 PM
About 1 hr

09-17-2006, 08:03 PM
@Yeoh: When I look at your three nice color-palette-images a few pages before, I was wondering how you adjusted your brush to do these strokes consisting of 6 parallel ones. I also got it, but only almost. In the curves there is always a bit of unwanted spacing I can´t get rid of (see the image link below).

splotched lines (

Spacing is at the lowest value of 1%

Do you have an idea what I did wrong?
Tablet type is Wacom Intuos3

09-17-2006, 09:26 PM

Everyone else: Good works!

Heres my latest work if someone wants to see:

09-18-2006, 02:46 PM
nice work everyone :)

09-18-2006, 06:19 PM
thanks abyss, ikuru, Fuge, EAD :)

Fuge: no ref for that, I surprised myself :D. The shiny circles are just a circle brush (m@'s) on a layer... then I lock transparency and paint in the reflection of the sky with a rough brush.

ACantarel: I get the same problem if I make a sharp turn. That looks like the CS2 icon. If it is, the one I use is from the "Faux Finished" set. It's called "Texture Comb 2" and needs to have its Angle set to 50, and angle jitter control set to "Direction". Hope you get it working, but like I said... it still breaks on tight curves.

EAD, I love your buildings! :)

This looked better as a thumb :\... 50 min:
