Hiya Milho, thanks!!! :) I just saw your post, I don't always check this thread...(too much talent, it's intimidating!!) :D

BUT my big secret for Reference shouldn't be a secret: :)

I5 Minute Sketchathon - Thread 1: Reference ( (

There are TONS of reference images here, some of the best are posted by tizianoadmirer towards the back (they're large images, so they're links).

I5 Minute Sketchathon - Thread 2: Sketches (

These 2 threads are related ~ the first is Reference for the second. I would encourage anyone to join in, it's a lot of fun! :)

Cheers, :)

03-13-2006, 01:02 AM
OK - I have a really lame question, for you gurus doing the very 3d-ish speedpaints (you know who you are ;) ). Do you start out in a 3d modeling app, or just blast ahead your preferred 2d app - just curious.

03-13-2006, 09:11 AM
hm, this took more then a few hours, so it's not exactly speedy speed, but it doesn't have a background or anything, pretty much just a character.

03-13-2006, 12:43 PM
another couple of these things, just 45min studies, trying to breathe a bit of life into my non reffed faces by half using ref on these.

great stuff guys

03-13-2006, 12:47 PM
added another hour into it:

03-13-2006, 02:06 PM
Gord : I sometimes use a very simple 3D wireframe to guide me (I can do that in photoshop, but it would just take longer). For instance in the latest car with gun turret pic, In the middle of the painting, while I was finishing the background, I thought "would be cool to have a car here", so I went in max, put the speed paint on background, adjusted a camera, horizon and ground plane, and put in 1 extruded spline and 4 cylinders. I then took a screen cap and used those wireframes as rough perspective guides for painting the car. That didn't even take 5 minutes.
I have sometimes overpainted simple V-Ray renders too, but I didn't do that for a long time.

Goro : great pic! love the style there. And thanks :)

libor - you are doing some very nice work!

03-16-2006, 12:46 AM
Rasputin_X - I must say I think I prefer the first version of your latest pic...
The muted tones give it more of a feeling of desolation... The contrasts in the updated version lose some of that feeling and make it feel more high-tec I reckon...

Nice tho...

Sweeet work zhuzhu
I am not a painter, but this forum got me excited about it. This is an old sketch that i coloured in approx. 1 hour. Too bad that i have a colour weakness (red/green thing), so he turned out quite green and i did not notice until it was "too late".

03-16-2006, 07:42 PM
Wow, zhuzhu, the baby is so cute. :D

Great Work everyone, keep it up. :)

I made a Speedpaint too. Ref was used.

And a Color Variation: Click (

03-16-2006, 09:57 PM
libor: good progressing!

zhuzhu: damn great!

03-16-2006, 10:20 PM
Zhuzhu-Wow now that is hot! 10 stars. Nice warm glow to the picture. I am still not able to impress the shapes like how you were trying to teach me.

Gord, Mr. Mu, Paperclip, Zhuzhu- Yeah I always try to make progress when I paint. Thanks for the encouragement.

This is R&B singer Ashanti.....
Photoshop7 about 2 hours and painted in 2 1 hour sessions. (Hard work)
This looks like a "paint-over" but it is not at all.

03-17-2006, 03:44 AM
Zhu - it is always such a joy to see your work! It makes me gappy - oops - uh happy :)

(no spell check today hehe)

03-17-2006, 03:47 AM
thanks~! glad you like that BABY~~~

pushav:ha ha ,that's ok.i think you got how to use big shapes right now,but beside hard edges, also need some soft is the WIP of BABY,hope it useful.i used airbrush to blend colors.

03-17-2006, 01:16 PM
It sounds and looks so easy, but it isn't at all. :D

03-17-2006, 04:02 PM
Zhuzhu-It looks simple but it is complex. I think that I add details too soon and paint with a default round brush with a medium opacity like 50-70 percent to get a build up effect. I even use the same brush for blending by changing the flow to something like 10 to get a softer tone going. Maybe I should try to paint a portrait using 100 or 80 percent. Do you paint your portrats zoomed out in photoshop at like 100 percent the whole time? Or do you eventually zoom in? Your method of painting could cut my painting time in half. Thanks for the W.i.p.

Another portrait from reference....
Photoshop 7 2hours time.

03-17-2006, 05:19 PM
zhu: cool as always, also nice that you ve posted mini tut!
hideoshi: im repeating myself but your designs rocks man! would be lovely to see more hues in your last painting...

pushav: nice progress, but choose your ref pic more carefully - it can make success or not (dont ref bad lighted women using front flash!), see Zhus refers they are really artsy and pleasant to look at. Just my 2 cents :)

well here are my last splotches of paint (I dont like it much but want to join in guys:D )

03-17-2006, 07:08 PM
The Ton: ah yeah, the image lost abit of the sketchy touch

fresh one ,approx 1h30min

03-18-2006, 02:16 AM
Storming work recently guys.

ZhuZhu> Nice tutorial. thanks for sharing

03-18-2006, 03:08 AM
Some Art Rage 2 stuff. Pirates and Baroque. Ok, slow day at work.

03-18-2006, 06:45 AM
zhuzhu - thx for the step by step - I have printed it and tacked it up by my computer.

03-18-2006, 06:58 AM
thanks all~~~!!!

Gord-MacDonald: thanks~! that's my pleasure~~~:)

pushav:actually,if my work file is big enough(over 2500 px width),i alway start with 25% zoom view.then 50%. i think i won't zoom in to 100%, if i want a very details airbrush's setting is 50% opacity and 10% flow, that will be soft enough.

50% view:

100% view:

03-18-2006, 10:23 AM

03-18-2006, 11:30 PM

please give me some random ideas on what to paint!

I didnt know what to paint so came the simplest still life ever: an apple :()

03-19-2006, 11:32 AM
Maybe this is a bit inappropriate, but we're having a 2D event today at at 21:00 (GMT +2) to 23:00. I hope some of you can participate. And feel free to contact me if you have any questions or something. The subject of the event will be revealed around 21:00 at this page:

After that, you have 2 hours to complete your sketch/image, then you must upload it in the event page. After that, the voting will start at around 23:00. Then you have about 10-30 mins time to vote and then we will reveal the winners. There are no prizes in this since we're doing this for fun and for practice only. :)

My contact info is:
Erikoinen @ IRCNet and in QuakeNet

I hope many of you will participate!
But I hope Zhuzhu wont participate 'cause he's way too good for us! :D Just kidding, of course!

EDIT: You have to register if you want to participate, otherwise you can't upload your image! But you can vote and view the images even if you don't register.

.. the registering would take about 1-2minutes :)

03-19-2006, 11:37 AM
zhu zhu, last one made my day!

03-19-2006, 11:39 AM
Willianwonka, I have an idea for you. Do google image search with some random words like city, catastrophe, flower, scenery, insane, rocky mountain, aeroplane, flight, etc (whatever comes in mind) and take some random photo out of those. Watch the image for ~2 minutes, then shut down your browser and go to Photoshop (or wherever) and start sketching what you in mind now. :)

... or just participate on tonight's fastcg event :D

Hello again!

We're having a one-day-competition here:
Subject is "Flowers of the Forest" (keeping it simple for now).

You have one day to do a image of the subject.

You may only use 2d softwares, so no 3d this time. You may do a full finalized picture or maybe just a sketch or whatever you wish. Remember, you have to register to participate (but it will take you no longer than 2 minutes :)) and you may only use photos as REFERENCE pictures!

The event ends at thursday 21:00 (GMT+2).

I wish some of you would join 'cause I want some foreign power to lift the FastCG community up. Now it's pretty much only a Finnish place. :)

Anyway, I welcome to join, have fun!

Pusha V-Thanks,man.Actually her eyes looked like that in the photo.I forgot to mention I drew it from ref(I good but not THAT good ;b). Do u mean u do your portraits withou ref o_O' ?

ShinobiXXX- Yep I used a reference but forgot to say that. The only time that I do not use a ref is when I paint over a pencil sketch. So in general, I tend to try to go for likeness in my portrait work now and days. It is starting to become easy. I will have to try to paint an Alicia Keyes also. I never got around to painting her but I do have a reference on my hard drive. It just so happen that I wanted to do Halle Berry first. Yours looks cool.
Soon, I should start adding textures to my portraits like the guy on This site. (

Libor- Nice landscapes

PushaV - Yeah, it's how I do it too. I was actually going for something sketchier like you and Zhuzhu do, cuz it was just supposed to b a quick study, but I'm still not able to get likeness with just a few brushstokes:banghead:.

Oh,btw, thanks for the link :thumbsup::thumbsup:. I had never seen his stuff; very nice!

Hi,there.IMO, the hills in the backgroud are too saturated n too green.Try mixing a little bit of the color of the sky.I also think it's too dark but I don't know if u wanna make it look like the sun is shining only on the characters.Either way, a bit lighter would look better.

Hope I could help:)

03-30-2006, 08:44 PM
Nice work Libor. Your landscapes remind me of Annimashad work. Keep it up!
