Awsome dude.. you gotta do a speedpaint recording some day.. come on !! please !! !:D :D :D

01-19-2005, 09:36 PM
You know I've thought about doing that but haven't really investigated what options there are for doing a direct-to-hard drive capture. Can you recommend anything?

01-19-2005, 10:30 PM
I reccomend Camtasia... you can even download a free trail from

What i do for my videos, in order to get a good size, and still good quality is record at a minimum resolution (despite camtasias warning) of 1280x768 and then after recording, and edition in camtasia studio i just save as AVI. Use the TSCC codec and uncompressed audio for the first step.

Then load up Virtual Dub, and use that to open the video file (is rather large). Under audio select full processing mode, and then under audio select compression. Choose MPEG layer 3 (MP3) compression for audio. Then under video (again full processing mode) select Compression, and select Xvid codec. I use the default settings for the Xvid codec. Then just hit Save As Avi and after a bit you will have a pretty good filesize for your video while maintaining what i say is pretty much perfect quality.

If you need RAR the files, to get them extremely small... i get about 30 minutes worth of drawing on about 20 mb space.. running at real-time speed.

Should you decided to do some videos please consider adding audio explaining steps and tricks, and please dont speed up the video to 800 % like many people do... it's really a shame and less usefull to watch :(

Looking forward to seeing some videos :D

01-19-2005, 10:56 PM
Wow, thanks for the detailed walk-through. I appreciate it.

01-19-2005, 11:02 PM

greets tuzz

01-20-2005, 03:15 AM
cloud study (i need a great deal of practice on this so maybe expect a few of these )

makes me think it might be nice to set up a few threads sometime with focuses on different excercises in 2d, no time limits, just threads full of people attempts at the specific thing, and their hints on tips on how they got there.

for anyone interested todays fun tool was the smeary wet sponge :D

01-21-2005, 07:23 PM
Lots of cool stuf in this thread! have been lurking into this one for a while, it's time to post something.. :>)
Just a quickie, less than an hour, photoshop cs:

01-22-2005, 12:11 AM
I haven't painted forever and it sucks now. :( I dont want to paint ever again :( You guys are better than me. :( 1 hour with color adjustment in photoshop. Painter for painting.

Really amazing work to everybody.
here is mine... 27 minutes -- photo-ref -- the wolf in the picture had some sort of shoes

01-27-2005, 07:30 AM
Goro: Thats amazing.. i absolutely love the mood ;) You gotta record some more of thoose images... *work mindtrick work dammit !*

01-27-2005, 04:33 PM
Hi Guys Nice pic's everywhere!

sempernow: Nice picture, i like the situation of the picture, and the body of the wolf, but the eyes are a bit guggled.
Anyway it's nice.

Goro: Nice pic again ;) as usuall. But i have a little crit .... hmm, the light on the car, the reddish pink on it, a bit too blurry and it is too reddish, i think.
BTW the picture is fantastic, and nice lightning.

Here's my new speed paint, a bit strange style...
I used blending options too, so bit unusuall. But i think not too bad. Hope u like it.

01-28-2005, 12:42 AM
first time on speed paint

,aybe an hours in painter w/ the lights in PS Anna the perspective looks forces because 3 point perspective gets very distorted near the vanashing points, try spacing them farther apart.

01-28-2005, 07:36 PM
I love the brush, the colors.
Coool picture!

LEts see nore speedy from you!

01-28-2005, 08:18 PM
thnxs for the comments brutalmonk. I like the texture of yours (it's something diferent) especially the spider web texture in the background.:)

ransom nice pic too. I like the perspective and color scheme. One minor comment.. the red light from the car behing should strike from the right side of the frame cause it is conflicting with the reflected car of the mirror. (the reflection makes us believe the car is on the right, so.. the red light should also come from the right) anyhow.. great picture..:)

01-28-2005, 10:29 PM
thnx swoop and brutal

swoop I'm still a Tidarian ;)
well sorry I don't have much time lately....I'll record some stuff after my thesis.

01-29-2005, 04:34 PM

01-30-2005, 02:13 AM

annisahmad, are you here too. :)

haven't been here for a long time.
a quick watercolor experiment:

see you

01-31-2005, 06:45 PM
Good image, but try and define the ground more.. seems to blend in with the sky.. no real horizon line unless you strain yourself a little.
For example try using a hardedged brush when doing the outline of the landscape...
like the sky though.. good feeling :D

01-31-2005, 07:47 PM
A very long time I've not posted here:

01-31-2005, 08:28 PM

thnx swoop

hunz....hmmm well just practice practice practice! Using reference helped me a lot.

02-10-2005, 08:55 PM
great one Goro!
i made some painting on the work, tomorrow ill get post the images here, i cant post it now because the images isnt on my computer..
but, here is a little problem im having..
I made the jungle using only airbrush changing the pressure of it and the size, not hard, but it dont looks like real, it dont have a nice texture...
then, i tried to make a draw (ill post the image tomorrow), but, when i was painting i did this ->
i painted the base colors (no light, no shadow)
then used the Dodge/Burn tool to create the shadows and lights, but it looks very ugly, more ugly than the jungle..
so, how you make the painting feel like reality?
can someone explain me that?
God bless u all.

02-11-2005, 12:28 AM

just somethin I did tonight in Painter. Tryin to get a mood for a kind of broken desolate environment....first real painting in painter...trying to figure out how to take it to that next step.....

02-18-2005, 11:28 AM

02-19-2005, 04:10 PM
Hey there!
Great speedpaints in this thread, I really like your sky HOON.
Yesterday my holidays started, so there is much time to do some paintings. Because i often get depressed when doing a painting taking longer than a day, i tried myself in speedpainting, i hope my paintings count as SPs.

Here is my work, enjoy it:

At first two older paintings i did after watching a football match:
1h Photoshop CS
2h Photoshop CS (I know i forgot the players ;-) )

And here are 3 speedpaints i did today:
1,5h Photoshop CS

1h 50min Alias SketchbookPro
I'm still studying how to draw faces, so th proportions of the rest could be a bit off)

And the last one is some SciFi stuff
50min Photoshop CS:

That is all for today :-)

02-20-2005, 05:27 AM (
I painted this artwork... i never have felt that free before. (http://%5Bimg%5D It's so awesome
Artrage... about 1 hour and 30 min.

02-20-2005, 06:46 AM
hi all. nice stuff to all of you.

Goro .. your stuff is really awesome.. as usual.
Brutalmonk.. really nice painting..

this one took 1h15m photo ref.

02-20-2005, 10:34 AM
Great work everybody ... here is my leatest :D
15 minute pencil sketch (on small paper, hence lack of detail) of Spike from Buffy. Made mistakes in the outline of the face from the beginning so the chin/mouth area is a little out of proportion.. but i was generally pleased with it :D
Njoy !

02-20-2005, 01:59 PM
I'd actually like to share my study on technique. It's not so speedy and not so finished but I hope I'd soon be able to do the same in half the time and without reference.

So here it is (the reduced version): 1 hour and a half on painter (soft airbrushes). If i finish it, I plan on colouring it with photoshop.

edit: added a fourth image - another hour on painter - let me know what you think!

02-21-2005, 04:38 PM
40 mins.concept. ps cs.

02-21-2005, 04:43 PM
annisahmad: I LOVE your colors and your have edged brush! Really nice pictures. I love them all.
Xillion: I love it, not bad, but a little work is needed to the shadows, BTW, the face is really nice, and reallistic, cool pic.

Keep goin' guys.

02-21-2005, 08:59 PM
thanks Brutal, I'll refine shadows as you suggested, and add detail to the other parts of the image soon.

02-22-2005, 12:37 AM
10min quicky....didn't have time today...

02-22-2005, 12:59 AM
This is kinda embarrassing, but I'm trying to get quicker and looser:
Still, I'll only gte better by doing it more often!:D

02-22-2005, 01:02 AM
Really sweet stuff here, it's been along time no posting here!

Anyway, this a kind of tribute to DragonBallZ, I used to love that serie when I was young!
Took me around an hour to finish, painter & photoshop.

02-22-2005, 01:23 AM
Very quick and very lo-res doodle, become quite interesting at the end.

Edit: Oh, damned! It was my XIII'th post :/

02-22-2005, 01:40 AM
PS 10 mins. Still trying!:)

02-22-2005, 02:36 AM
about 1 hour.. artrage

02-22-2005, 02:47 AM
I really like what you're doing with that artrage DreamMaster! it's sweet!!

02-22-2005, 10:27 AM
erilaz: reeeeeeeeeeeallly nice mood. it deserves to be continued!!!

02-22-2005, 06:54 PM

too much 3d, needed a break. No ideas, so... self-portrait. All hard brushes at 100% opacity (oh, except for a few strokes in the background) to get away from bad habits.

02-24-2005, 05:34 AM
Wow, good job all:D, wish I can participate more:D.

02-24-2005, 02:47 PM
Less than 2 hours of work, it was for a weekly over at eatpoo.

02-24-2005, 04:58 PM
I was just gonna play around with some custom brushes, but got a bit carried away...
gimp, 4 hours

Nice work everybody, keep it up!

02-24-2005, 10:29 PM
I doodled again with artrage... interesting I must say... about 2 to 3 hours of work (on and off).

02-25-2005, 02:15 AM
erilaz: reeeeeeeeeeeallly nice mood. it deserves to be continued!!!

Hey, thanks! It's very rare I get complimented on anything I paint up, so this really made my day! :D

Sangotten: Awesome creature!

02-25-2005, 01:20 PM
A speedy's been kind of a speedy, except I sort of spread it over the it's hard to say how long it took...but to be save altogether I'd say within 2hours in openCanvas1.1

02-25-2005, 02:27 PM
Nice colors Taron.

This is a little artrage experiment. About 1 hour I guess.

02-26-2005, 12:40 AM
taron333> i REALLY dig that one!

here's something that was supposed to have a 'childish/kiddy' look but then i turned it around to something more serious/dramatic looking. 30 mins in phtooshop cs.

**EDIT** thanks brutalmonk

02-26-2005, 08:12 AM
Hey annisahmad: There is only a box with x.....
Taron333: That is fantastic, i really like those kinda of trees :D Really nice stuff, it have a little underwather feeling, but i love it really!

02-26-2005, 10:45 PM

02-27-2005, 01:33 PM
Nice work everybody.... really awsome job !

Here is my leatest pencil sketch.. 15 minutes and then scan.. no adjustments.. but i forgot to color in the upper right hand corner with hair.. should be dark also ;)

02-27-2005, 02:16 PM
My first portrait.
About 1 hour.
On arts lesson the teacher gave us half faces and we had to finish it. How is it looks like?
I know the hair is not similar and i had no time to finish it...but...:D
I had only HB pencil so not too dark.

Swoop: Great one! She looks really angry, nice picture, and fast! I love it.

taron333, jeremyi, and swoop, thank u! i appreciate it.
swoop> i would have done wat u said but painter messed up the file i saved in. i just read in tips n tricks that saving in RIFF format is a bad idea and that is what i exactly did for that speedpainting. so i couldnt work on it again :( . thanks for the comment.

here's a concept speedpainting i did in about an hour in Painter IX.

03-01-2005, 08:07 PM

OpenCanvas and little touch up in photoshop

03-05-2005, 07:13 AM
Hi,.. this is my first post on Speed Painting ^^
My name is Joseph, from Indonesia.
Nice to meet you all

No, reference so this one is out of proportion, :

03-05-2005, 10:05 AM
Hi Goro! I really love your sketches, your technique reminds me of Craig Mullins (he is one of my favourites btw...). Just a question: how do you add those little 'textures' on canvas ? I mean, there seems to be some sort of grain in some spots, and in some other the canvas seems carved. What brushes did you use ? Is it some sort of noise filter ??

bye, E.

03-05-2005, 10:05 AM
goro, that's pretty cool dude!

03-05-2005, 06:41 PM
thnx art2!

Xillion sometimes I use self painted textures I put over the whole painting with different layermodes. Check the tutorials thread in the Daily sketchgroup section of cgtalk.
I made a little tutorial once.

My pic for today...

03-05-2005, 07:39 PM

I went to see 'constantine' and liked very much the main character. The main character will have Keanu Reeves' face in the end.
This is more a WIP than a skecth...but I tend to end things as soon as I begin them so I'm posting it here. What I'm trying to do is learn the secrets of lightning and mood. Suggestions, impressions are welcome. (

ps.: Goro, thanks for the hints

03-07-2005, 04:49 PM

I WISH I had a tablet, i doodled this in about 15 minutes, experimented for about another 10.. kinda of a first attempt really, using photoshop and a 400dpi el-cheapo mouse, no reference.. it started as a squgle, which became his right eye, and i just had a bit of fun from there

@ 15mins (

@ 25mins (

Dont worry, im fully aware of its massive errors, it only takes a flipping on the horizontal plane to see how bad it is

03-16-2005, 09:17 PM
Goro , I think the thing I love about your work isn't the suberb visual style and quality (which is amazing), but the fact that each piece looks like it's FOR something. It promotes a real sense of "something is going on here and I want to know more".

03-16-2005, 10:53 PM
