Title: I Need New Glasses... (nudity)
Name: Julien Vanhoenacker
Country: France
Software: 3ds max, After Effects, VRay

Different things made me create this picture, first i wanted to play with mirror and lenses, my first tests were quite crazy and i eventually calmed down to some more conventional composition.
I also wanted to make a girl face based on some bengal drawings (
And of course the aim was also to improve my texturing/shading/lighting skills, so i decided not to use HDRI or SSS. A great help came from S. Stahlberg ( for the skin shading, giving fast and nice results.
The hair was quite a challenge too, i had the opportunity to try many technics, and to fail many times too, the good old polygon was the best choice in the end.
It also my very first image using VRay, quite fast, but also limited in features for compositing.
About the nude stuff, well that's how i wanted it, sorry it it disturbs you.
It's made with Max 6, VRay and After Effects 6.

You can see here some detail close-ups :

And some samples of the textures for the skin shader :

love her eyes:)

11 November 2004, 12:16 PM
Great stuff! The composition is perfect and I love the colour scheme.

11 November 2004, 01:30 PM
Very nice image, only disturbing thing is the text bubble - i'd get rid of it, and place the same text underneath the image. The bubble simply does not fit the style, and is not that necessary anyway.

11 November 2004, 01:31 PM
nice !!! :)

11 November 2004, 01:40 PM
for someone who wears glasses.. she's got pretty clear eyes.. heh sorry just an narky observation :P Seriously, the eyes.. the eyes! I think they're great.

The image has a great style to it as well.

11 November 2004, 02:14 PM
Very nice indeed! Love the face! Big eyes...Great!
The body is very realistic. Not like all the other cg female. She looks really natural, but still beautiful. The enviroment you put her in is great. It makes her even more soft against the rough background.
You even done a great job with the hair! That's unusual.

Love it!

11 November 2004, 02:45 PM
her face seems like a caricatured face of Menu Suvari.. i think anyway.

11 November 2004, 03:55 PM

11 November 2004, 05:32 PM

11 November 2004, 06:24 PM
totally mind blowing work you got here, and she is really nice...and i think the back ground you make is even better then the girl...i mean the reality thing.

11 November 2004, 06:32 PM
this is amazing, the render just oozes personality and style.amazing work

11 November 2004, 06:55 PM
Ouch, nice cute face! I'm impressed, this needs to go to the front page I say :)
Hey how did you get that nicely grained look? Is that because of low GI settings or was it done in post?

Anyways, man you got my fingers itching to try and make a cute girl myself (who am I kidding, it'll never happen.. )

11 November 2004, 07:13 PM
This is really stunning work. Congratulations on a truly awesome piece -- I actually like the text bubble, because it almost feels like this could be going into a comic book and then it's the beautiful 3D image you have right there. Wow... captivating in every way.

11 November 2004, 08:05 PM
Well done for the balanced combination of tasty and tasteful:thumbsup:

11 November 2004, 09:15 PM
4 stars! i like it alot, and like someone said, get rid of the text bubble, im curious how did u do the hair? shag? or sth else? great job!

11 November 2004, 12:48 AM
fantastic work and fanstastic girl , i love she...very sensual:)) can i have the phone number??

compliments nice job!!

11 November 2004, 01:12 AM
About that text bubble, for what it's worth I think it frames the picture well and fits with the style. The two bubbles leading to the text also mirror two pairs of lenses, frames, breast, buttocks... It also adds some individuality to your piece. You've also done a good job of keeping the text bubbles' colours in coordination.

If the eyes weren't stylised, I'd agree that the text bubble would look a little odd, but as it is now, c'est parfait. C'est incroyable!

11 November 2004, 02:27 AM
This is great. Definately deserves front page. Might not get it because of the nudity. Its very good. THe skin is perfect. The whole image loks so real accept for its not. It has a cartoony feel but its perfectly real. Great composition lighting renmdering man. And that skin with no sss. My good. Love the eyes and all the strange disproportion elements. The hair is amazing. At both top and botom. THis is just great. 5 stars amazing. People complain about all the pictures made of nude women but this is not one of those. Its great. Amazing job.

[edit: and i loved the copy machine too you are trully among the very most talented artists in the industry]

11 November 2004, 02:37 AM

11 November 2004, 01:26 PM
can we see any wires ???

11 November 2004, 02:48 PM
This picture is just perfect. The lighting is just great and her skin shader looks realistic. What did you use for the hair? All of the elements just come together so nicely. Definitaly Award worthy :)

SWEEEeeet work man.

11 November 2004, 03:43 PM
i like her, it is very smart.

11 November 2004, 05:20 PM
Oups Sorry i forgot the wires, here they are :

11 November 2004, 05:34 PM
comment je suis passé a coté de ca :curious: c'est génial! bon style, original. Great image, and I like the BD style. :buttrock:

11 November 2004, 05:59 PM
Really nice, my only comments that the head`s stylised look doesn`t match to the realistic body. If the huge eyes are intentional, I think very good caricaturistic image

11 November 2004, 06:14 PM
five stars material man

11 November 2004, 06:20 PM
just excellent work ! !
really good composition and great idea . . .. super boulot ! ! !ca change de ton excellent ( lui aussi )transformer . . . . et ce avec brio !! ! ! chapos bas ,j'adore

11 November 2004, 08:12 PM
yeah the whole setup with the glasses is just brilliant ! very clever and fresh ...
and beautifully executed.
I would say the only thing that bothers me a little bit are the bottom eyelids . looks like they're hanging down a tad too much...
still, a great image.
5 stars ! :applause:

11 November 2004, 08:17 PM
I love the "softness" of Your work! GR8!!!

11 November 2004, 08:17 PM
Awesome work, color, texture, especially the compistion is really done well. Nice stylization.

11 November 2004, 12:36 AM
Marvelous, very nice. Tell me this though, which of those texture samples is Color, and what is the other one?

11 November 2004, 03:45 PM
Please please please do a comic book page. Your style is absoloutly wonderful. I think you could start an entire new generation of manga. It's the most amazing comic book/Cg hyrbid I've ever seen.

Well that's my two cents.

Good work. Congratulations.

11 November 2004, 07:59 PM
Wow, excelent skin and hair, the athmosphere is great too, i only don't know if you want one eye had the iris greater then the other or if you animate it acordingly to the scene ilumination

11 November 2004, 06:05 PM
the character looks fantastic, very nice work. :)

11 November 2004, 01:32 PM
a-hoooo!! great great great kanex!! :)

11 November 2004, 08:14 PM
absolutly great

11 November 2004, 09:04 PM
Really nice work, personally I don't like the eyes too much, kind of breaks the image for me, but still some excellent work.

Is the lower left-hand corner of the image (the sink) a photo?

It reminds me of Bengal's drawings.

11 November 2004, 06:05 PM
I really love this image. Great character and composition. Congratulations :applause:

11 November 2004, 12:55 PM
impressed with your style :)

12 December 2004, 10:35 PM
Well...what to say...when this mornin I found this image I called all the studio to look at it...everyone was impressed by your work!!
These are the main comments we made:
_ you perfectly bring the style of bengal drawings in your 3d model! :applause:
_ the grain looks of the image is simply crazy, everyone likes it in the studio!
_ everyone should envy your texturing/shading/lighting skills ... and this image is a clear exemple!
_ the comic baloon fit the scene! :D
_ finally the french guy workin with us can say that france has bring something good! ;) (joke) :p

Have you ever tought about makin a stereolithography of the scene? I'm sure it'd be great to have it! :)

Anyway at the studio everyone is sure about a thing: you deserve 5 stars!

Good works and keep goin this way!! :)

Cheers!

Great work! :wise:

01 January 2005, 12:54 AM
Although this is the first I've seen of your work, its amazing. Your style is amazing, and I love your little attention to detail (the grime on the mirror was a great touch), and the idea is pretty funny.

01 January 2005, 12:38 AM
Wow. Truly amazing work. Can I ask what you used the 2 versions of the diffuse-looking map for? Is the second one used for diffuse for shadow areas? Or for some sort of sub-surfacey kind of thing?

01 January 2005, 04:59 AM
five star from me ,excellent job

01 January 2005, 10:49 PM
wow this is crazy

01 January 2005, 03:22 PM
Her body looks killer but her eyes look a little to big.

01 January 2005, 03:45 PM
Yeahh that's great man.- Hooter babes rocks!!!
Simply perfect.

01 January 2005, 05:39 PM
Really nice, my only comments that the head`s stylised look doesn`t match to the realistic body. If the huge eyes are intentional, I think very good caricaturistic image

I'm sure they are intentional. The thing that hit me about them is that the rest of the image is pretty much photoreal, it makes the eyes look like a disfigurement.

01 January 2005, 01:29 AM
5 stars for me!
One of the best pieces seen around in a while!

01 January 2005, 10:37 PM
I really like the texture of the character, looks really cool and realistic. I think everything looks really nice, the body, hair and composition are just right, but just one thing kinda take away my attention is the character's eyes.. for some reason, it seem like it doesn't really match with the rest of the body.. I think maybe the eyes are a little bit too far away from each other.. I don't know.. maybe not...
However, it is a really excellent work
love to see more of your stuff!

01 January 2005, 04:06 AM
amazing! so realistic , if it wasnt for the eyes i would think she was real! btw , i love the eyes , im my opinion , i think the whole ' i need new glasses ' thing had somthing to do with the eyes.. and i love the tanline around the lower area... capital work!

02 February 2005, 05:43 AM

Just Amazing work on the girl textures and all

02 February 2005, 01:28 AM
I don't understand the critics about reality levels. Depending on the purpose you can even draw and animate toons in a perfect real enviroment. I think The girl it's great

06 June 2005, 11:28 PM
Superbe, j'adore le fait de faire du rendu réalisme en déformant les proportions, ici les yeux ca surprend c'est bien un peu style japonais pour la tete j'aime bien, belles images, 5 stars pour moi.

08 August 2005, 08:52 PM
That is really great job.:bounce:

I have a question. in your detail of texture #04 , You use it for Which part of your material???

08 August 2005, 03:59 PM
Great Image, very sexy and natural. Just a crit: maybe her cartoonish eyes and the text baloon look a bit weird cause everything else is quite realistic.
Good job.

09 September 2005, 11:53 PM
What channels do those texture on page 1 go into? I understand the grey scale maps as bump and specular.

What are the 2 color maps?
