There are many ways to do this: 1. Use the mesh explode script available in the net view of XSI then attach the mesh pieces to a particle system as instances which live forever or spwan smaller instances upon collision. 2. Use this explode script http://www.motionblur.it/ (http://www.motionblur.it/) breaking up the object into say 10 or 12 pieces then running the script again and again on the individual pieces. After that, define the pieces as active ridget bodies and simulate or (the method I find most time consuming but yeilds the best results) hand animate the pieces sublementing with instanced particles flying off screen.
