Too good to be true!

If this is really 3D rendering, you are doing amazing job there.
Even all those little skin details are just perfect. And i really love those
wet eyes.

:applause: Excellent!

11 November 2004, 12:57 PM
great work!! i ilke the texture and the hair... bravo

11 November 2004, 12:59 PM
Now there's a face I've not seen for a long time, still looks excellent - nice one lads

11 November 2004, 01:00 PM speechless.
this has to be the most photoreal render ive seen of a face ever, but then i havent seen much. but then again, this is the most photoreal render of i'm incoherent.
this absolutely rocks:buttrock:

11 November 2004, 01:04 PM
very nice, the hair its great:thumbsup:

11 November 2004, 01:08 PM
impressive !
some more renderings? different angles?

11 November 2004, 01:13 PM
beautiful ... once again :D

11 November 2004, 01:13 PM
This model is top-notch! Excellent skin bump and the hair is very convincing. The lips of Angelina Jolie is very sexy for man.

11 November 2004, 01:45 PM
Holy crap! Another amazing job there from you folks at ark. Thanks for the huge hi-res image too - the skin details (especially around the eyes) are incredible! I also like the fact that she doesnt look typically perfect and supermodel ish like most other 3d gals.

Great work - 5 stars

Dr. Ira Kane
11 November 2004, 01:48 PM
The hi-res image looks great !!! Not every day you see stuff like this here, very good render ! Can we see the wire ?

11 November 2004, 02:04 PM
Perfect. 5 stars.

11 November 2004, 02:17 PM
This is wonderful. It's the most detailed and realistic skin shader I have ever seen. I like the hair too. Great work! Can we see some more pictures?

11 November 2004, 02:25 PM
very very lifelike!
11 November 2004, 02:28 PM
This Image OUTSTANDING! Never saw anything like this for a long time!

I would be nice to see some other angles. Sometimes models look perfect in only one pose, but from other angles they are just good!
(I just want some more stunning images :D)

How did u make the hair!? That is very interesting for me!

Anyway.....booooooooaaaah... great work:applause:!

11 November 2004, 02:32 PM
my only crit would be this. the pores. they look great on the eyelids, nose, and the cheeks but it looks like you took the same pore density and used it for the entire head. the space directly under the lower eyelid should be quite a bit smoother than it looks. the forehead also shouldnt look as rough. other than that 3 cheers for a supurb job. Love the hair.

11 November 2004, 02:50 PM
Amazing render, just the perfect balance to reality. Always can be seen skins too perfect or monsters, this character have day to day human features. Congratulations.

Hey, put me on the list asking for more angles...

11 November 2004, 02:58 PM
perfect!!

11 November 2004, 03:07 PM
Looks great, but the skin looks a bit to dry (exspecially on the outer cheek/cheekbone), and the lips look a bit like they are made out of plastic.

The eyes are fantastic though.

11 November 2004, 03:47 PM
Great job! But- in all honesty I can't stand the lips. Maybe you can tell I've never been a fan of angelina jolie...

The whole face seems absolutely perfect- except for the humongous lips.

11 November 2004, 03:50 PM
Thanks Guys :-)

Here is a Quicktime video (, animated using some basic keyframing and lots of morph targets :-) ---- 5 MB Zip file

Here are some nice Texture maps for you to have a look at..

11 November 2004, 03:56 PM
Wow! Awesome work!!!
One of the most realistic shader skin I've ever seen!!

11 November 2004, 04:02 PM
WOOOW! If this is not on the frontpage in 1 day, I'm a fool! ;) Just AWSOME! And that movie is  [more out of words than I've ever been ;) ]!!! No words....!

One of the most realistic shader skin I've ever seen!!Thats what I second for sure!

I think I need somebody to close my mouth ;)

Greetz to this CG-MASTERs, Gijs

11 November 2004, 04:17 PM
impressive work... especially the lips are perfect !!! ....

I admire you ... keep it ...

11 November 2004, 05:09 PM
Okay I have a long way to go, it looks so real. I especially love the hair!! Great job

11 November 2004, 05:47 PM
Yeah man awesome skin shading.
Good work

See this:

11 November 2004, 05:55 PM
To qote vader.. Impressive... Most Impressive.

Best looking skin I've seen throughout the face in here I think. Usually it doesn't match up, and the bump depth is not varied for different areas of the face.
Around the eyes is usually where I notice it from a distance. Even when I blew it up it was pretty convincing. Best job I've seen around the eye - I'm sure of it. Great job. Thanks for the high rez photo to study. It's appreciated.
11 November 2004, 05:55 PM
What I noticed: The character in the Quicktime-movie had no hair. Did u create the hair totally in photoshop for the still? I am just asking because I am investigating a good way to create realistic hair at the moment. If this is photoshopped I could sleep a little bit better!

11 November 2004, 07:17 PM
Really Impressive.

Maximum Respect.

11 November 2004, 07:20 PM
Very nice. Great modeling, texturing, lighting, and shading. Extra points for showing your maps and suppling a video.

For all this, you have been ::Plugged On the Front Page::. Great job.

11 November 2004, 07:25 PM
how you make the creepy glossy waterry on the eye. You put an extra geo there? or just pump up the spec value around that area. OR you have some other way of doing it.

11 November 2004, 07:52 PM
yeah the wet eye is amazing, how did you guys do that?

11 November 2004, 07:55 PM
Insanely awesome. Especially the hi-res. I love the imperfections, in the skin in particular. Amazing photo-realism. Great work.

11 November 2004, 07:59 PM
Wow! That's impressine!!
Great job!
Great model - great texture - great render
Surely one of the the best cg face I saw!!! Respect!

could you post some wires???

11 November 2004, 07:59 PM
Sweet Jesus

11 November 2004, 08:17 PM
That's ***** impressive man! My new backgrounds :p. I hope that you will post us other superb creations!

David Lafleur

11 November 2004, 08:35 PM

Thats holy ****ing amazing, never seen a face more real than that. Dual thumbs up, 8 stars and frontpage-plug forevermore. Only thing is in the animation, when she gets surprised by the naked camera-man, that expression on her face is kinda silly.

But again, AWESOME work, this is surely gonna be my background for a while

11 November 2004, 08:45 PM
EXCELLENT artwork - hopefully the quailty of render will keep up when animated.
Best luck!

11 November 2004, 09:02 PM
Arg.. Splendid !

11 November 2004, 09:05 PM
This rox so hard.
*bows before you*

11 November 2004, 09:07 PM
Love this image! The hardest things to acheive in closeup 3D human face renders seem to be eye moisture and the structure of the lacramal ducts in the corner of the eye. Both of which you've nailed. Additionally, the light scattering on the skin surface is very beautiful. BRAVO! :bounce: :buttrock: :applause:

11 November 2004, 09:10 PM
i would love to see other angle if it's possible. great artwork.

11 November 2004, 09:12 PM
This deserves a special award all of it's own.

11 November 2004, 09:24 PM
*Gasp!* (i'm not really the gasping type so...)

Very impressive face... i can stare for a long time at all the little intricate things in there.

- Reinier

11 November 2004, 09:29 PM
Wow ...impressive !!!

11 November 2004, 09:37 PM
superb work m8 :)

now...i dont want to cause any trouble...or disscutions...but i cant hold it in me any i go !

11 November 2004, 09:38 PM
Awesome, creepy real - a new standard perhaps.

Only thing that seems a bit odd is the amount of skin movement just below the eyes and bridge of her nose. I would love to see the rig components from that same animation, what a feat. Congratulations.

11 November 2004, 09:42 PM
The eyes looks small for me and the neck is a lil bit huge and the mouth is a bit too wide and the noze is long. I can see it with my own eyes.

The texture/ skin shading is very well done !. Just the modeling... i donno what other peoples say but as i can see is.. im telling the truth. Maybe the character is made like that or its a style.

11 November 2004, 09:44 PM
Really superior work. I think you guys have pretty much nailed your target for realism. Cheers.

11 November 2004, 09:45 PM
marvellous, great, awesome, and more. good looking image and very good texturing, lighting, more .

11 November 2004, 09:58 PM
excellent work...very realistic skin...

congratulations :applause:

11 November 2004, 09:58 PM
i'm in love:love: (again) ..

superior work..more than awesome ..congrats

11 November 2004, 10:09 PM
You guys did a really job at making this piece, but contratry to what most of the guys here are saying about realism, its doesn't look real to me. But it still looks good!

11 November 2004, 10:15 PM
holy crow! Thats great! I originally missed the high res image. The texture for the face is supreme! Hair seems little flat compared to the rest but its subtle.

11 November 2004, 10:17 PM
Dude, that is awesome.... at first i thought it was a photograph lol

how the hell did you get the bump map to work so well? i can never get my bumps to look that perfect

11 November 2004, 10:17 PM
Excelent 5 stars:thumbsup:

11 November 2004, 10:22 PM
ah well...I envy you guys! :buttrock:

very, very good!

The still is just awesome...the movie is really cool too.

My only crit would be the hair. I think it isn't as good as the skin, eyes, etc. The curls look 3D. The rest is just superb.

11 November 2004, 10:30 PM
WOW ... nice girl

11 November 2004, 10:36 PM
is it all a light siteup and textures or is there some type of plugin adding to it?
Fantastic piece?

11 November 2004, 10:40 PM
looks great, i realy like the skin. things that could be improved to increase realism are the lips and the white in the eyes, there's only white, no vains.

11 November 2004, 10:53 PM
ya very nice

just 1 problem
the hair doesnt seem to have a shadow
or am i just tripping out
dont know but looks cool

11 November 2004, 10:58 PM
The eyes looks small for me and the neck is a lil bit huge and the mouth is a bit too wide and the noze is long. I can see it with my own eyes.

The texture/ skin shading is very well done !. Just the modeling... i donno what other peoples say but as i can see is.. im telling the truth. Maybe the character is made like that or its a style.

Yap agreed, but the texture is awsome.

11 November 2004, 11:06 PM
Great detail but i have a real prob with the size of the mouth and lips....or am i the only one?

11 November 2004, 11:12 PM
Great Image, and Great Hair!

11 November 2004, 11:16 PM
oh my god.
that is perfect.
the attention to the details is extremly unordinaury in this one.
the texture and bump maps are amazing.
super greatwork man.
the force is with you.i can see.....

11 November 2004, 11:20 PM
Perfection in it's truest form.:bowdown::bowdown::bowdown:

11 November 2004, 11:30 PM
simply one of the most convincing photorealistic faces I've seen since I started out 7 years ago. the attention to detail is incredible.

talk about pushing boundaries....

keep it up guys

ps. if you do have time, maybe think about adding in those hair shadows. would perfect it.

11 November 2004, 11:45 PM
Bugger me that's nice!

Only crits would be that the texture of the lips doesn't quite reach the edge of the model, (which does happen in real life) but sine your lower lip is so sharply defined it seems more prominent (to me at least). That and as people have mentioned the skin around the inner eye looks too dry/bumpy compared to the rest.

But seriously, those were things I only spotted because I was gaping at it for so long. :D

11 November 2004, 11:50 PM
Excellent detail texturing..specially those eyes really attract me!!! 5 star from me.

11 November 2004, 11:54 PM
It's certainly nice. Good job with the eyes.
Although she still comes off as CG. You need to do an asymmetry pass, or more of one if you already have, on your model to make it look less computer graphicy. (If realism is your objective)
All in all nice step in the right direction.

11 November 2004, 12:10 AM
Great Work!

11 November 2004, 12:21 AM

please post more angles and perhaps full body shot :applause:

and may i ask what are the size of the original texture maps ?

again Woww

11 November 2004, 12:32 AM

im not agree about criticizes on eyes, lip and neck. all looks as a normal human. it doesnt suppose to be a perfect piece, a hero type and its one big point on its realism.
but i think hair is not 3d and overall its just an amazing texture work.

11 November 2004, 12:50 AM
Very very beautyfull:bounce: :applause:

11 November 2004, 12:52 AM
like, totally awesome :bounce:

11 November 2004, 12:54 AM
not sure if anyone asked yet but is the hair done in photoshop or did u use shag?

11 November 2004, 01:03 AM
Nice work.

There is only one thing i see wrong with it..or her....her lips seem to wide. It could be just me.

I also wanted to know if this is true, ive seen it within a lot of faces i've seen.... if u take ur fingers from the edge of ur lips and move them up, they SHOULD meet with the inner corners of your eyes or very close. I've found this method to be very helpfull. Or it could just be somethign with my face :)

11 November 2004, 01:20 AM
Oh my... This will have to be a fanboy post: Absolutely beautiful! Only thing I found to crit was the texture and bump under her eyes (like someone said earlier, it should be tighter in those areas) but that is just being picky, the overall impression is truly stunning!

11 November 2004, 01:48 AM
Nice work,

I like it alot. Can we see some wires??

11 November 2004, 01:50 AM
i would, i repeat i would kill a man/woman/child for a tutorial on that!
thats amazing
im a lightwave user and i'll never be able to do that in my life!

11 November 2004, 01:53 AM
This is gorgeous.Especially I like eyes and cheek very much.
These look so nice,great job.:)

11 November 2004, 01:59 AM
i tell you what ... if this quality of work continues exit and improve in this market ... we can forgot to watch real man movie .... in short, all movie in future is CG generate ...

human create human !!! OMG

11 November 2004, 02:19 AM
wonderfull work!

11 November 2004, 02:34 AM
\o/ Incredible shader and texturing
Awesome eyes =D so live
Incredible bad modeled mouth >D
Give us some tech specs about this shader man it really works =D

11 November 2004, 02:58 AM
WOW! Now that is some amazing LW work :)
you should post it on the finished work section of definately would be front page material I think.

Great job!

11 November 2004, 03:01 AM
Indeed, one of the best skin shaders seen. Eyes, skin, lips are fantastic! I can't believe you only used a bump map and not a displacement map? It looks very convincing. My only crit's would be the bump seems a slight bit too extreme on her right cheek, starting from under her eyes. The extreme bump map here makes her skin look more wrinkly and, therefore, slightly older than what you appear to be aiming for. Other crit would be the hair appears to be two-dimensional (i.e. Photoshopped in post). Very minor crit, though in an otherwise AWESOME job!
P.S. Do you have any wires to show off? :scream:

11 November 2004, 03:30 AM
this is so good. excellent work.

11 November 2004, 05:08 AM
Holy Crap!! Just..........Holy Crap!

Very Nice.

11 November 2004, 05:20 AM
:scream: :scream: :scream: :scream: ......................:applause: :applause: :applause: ..............

simply amazing words.........

The Chief
11 November 2004, 05:21 AM
Wow, wow, WOW! Cool.

I'm curious about how you handle eyes (texturing).
I'm also curious whether the eyebrows were modeled or sasquatch.

Really cool clip, too. I like the bloom around the edges of the head

11 November 2004, 06:46 AM
Simply amazing work and well worth the front page

11 November 2004, 07:00 AM
Wow.. finnaly a game modeller that pays attention to the common skin imperfections such as facial hair (fur)

It adds a whole lot to the realism of the model

11 November 2004, 07:04 AM
it's such an awesome work.....

11 November 2004, 07:29 AM
Holy muffins! Impeccable work!

Thought it was a photograph at first! :scream:

11 November 2004, 08:00 AM
This image is great!
it would be nice to see other angles.

11 November 2004, 08:37 AM
OMG..what can i say...amazing, i still cant believe what i am seeing. damn realistic!:banghead:

11 November 2004, 09:18 AM
Dude, this photo is really amazing. Ooops, did I say photo? I mean render. :) Good job, very inspiring. Downloading that video right now.

11 November 2004, 09:38 AM
absolutely stunning..............

Holy crap! Another amazing job there from you folks at ark. Thanks for the huge hi-res image too - the skin details (especially around the eyes) are incredible! I also like the fact that she doesnt look typically perfect and supermodel ish like most other 3d gals.

Great work - 5 stars my thoughts exactly

11 November 2004, 09:41 AM
That's awesome! Incredible! Unbelievable! The hires image looks nearly real!

:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

The only thing that separated this from a photo is the missing finetuning of the skin's pores around the eyes. They bump a little bit too much and should be scaled down.

11 November 2004, 10:02 AM
Very nice!

11 November 2004, 10:09 AM
Yo, man
dont have any words for it.
IT's AMAZING.... :applause: :applause: :applause: :applause:

11 November 2004, 10:20 AM
Beautiful render! The amount of detail in the hi-res is stunning... Not a huge fan of the mouth shape, feels a little wide, but the work around the eye is absolutely top notch

The animation test also works very well. A couple of suggestions about the shapes, the eyebrow down could do with coming together a little more and ridging in the middle, and the mouth when smiling seems a little too pulled up at the corners with not enough effect in the middle - could maybe raise it a little in the middle also. Shapes around the eye are great, especially the squint.

11 November 2004, 10:28 AM
That's what I'm talkin about. An artist making the software do what he wants it to do.
No one can ever say that Lightwave is the cause of his lack of skill or Lightwave can't get them the results. It's all about the Artist Baby.

11 November 2004, 10:38 AM
not bad  when does ark start work on the next Final Fantasy film? :applause:

11 November 2004, 10:54 AM
INcredible, realistic and wonderful work!
WHat is ARK?
Can you tell us more about that?

Oups, this is your society..sorry

11 November 2004, 11:12 AM
my only crit would be this. the pores. they look great on the eyelids, nose, and the cheeks but it looks like you took the same pore density and used it for the entire head. the space directly under the lower eyelid should be quite a bit smoother than it looks. the forehead also shouldnt look as rough. other than that 3 cheers for a supurb job. Love the hair.seconded. the bumps on the cheeks are too deep imo

11 November 2004, 11:52 AM

great, 5 stars

11 November 2004, 11:58 AM
I have to agree with several others on the lips - they strike me as too large. I have to say I wasn't fooled for an instant on it being a photo, but the lighting and texture is very very good. Love the wet eyes.

Well, its been 8 pages of comments, how about some wireframes?? : ).

11 November 2004, 12:17 PM
Wow, this is one of the most beautiful cg girls i,ve ever seen

11 November 2004, 12:33 PM
heh heh.... and there i was thinking i'm all alone in sunny sheff!

love the skin result fantastic stuff...and good to see some funky stuff coming outta the grim

11 November 2004, 12:33 PM
sombody talks about the eyes that are too small... or mounth to large... this make the character unique and with a great 'charme'. Stunnign texture work !

11 November 2004, 01:06 PM
simply the most real cg face i've ever seen!!!
Amazing texture work!

11 November 2004, 01:17 PM

11 November 2004, 01:20 PM

Great work man.....very nice texturing man..

11 November 2004, 01:21 PM
Shading, texturing is excellent. I like the images viewing only the parts, my crits only the general proportion. If it`s the desired proportion, I have no crit.

11 November 2004, 01:28 PM
Your Pic is amazing.
Haven't seen such a detailed Skin Texture in my Life. ^^

Really Awesome.
Keep on this wonderful Work.

11 November 2004, 01:36 PM
this is absolutely amazing!!! stunning texture work!

hope you dont misunderstand but: maybe try to push the edges of her lips more backwards than upwards (in this awsome anim-short!) i think that'll help make it even more realistic ... but i'm not worthy saying such things .

you own!

11 November 2004, 02:21 PM
Thanks for all the crits and kind words guys :D I am working from home today so cant post any wires until Monday

If you are interested in our work then check out our sites.. we do more than just character modelling  ( --- Game modelling. ( --- High end illustration and broadcast work.

Thanks again.. Will try to post a nice image for you guys every few days or so..

11 November 2004, 02:58 PM
Very very beautiful work. Went and checked out the other thread in the Game Artwork Thread also...

Personally, I don't mind the lips at all...they look fine in the animation test - they need a little more subtle movment around the cleft (then again, it was only a test). But as for the still photo, one thing that hangs in the Uncanny Valley is the diameter of the iris in the eyes. They seem a hair wide, but I just figured you were going for a subtle Manga look on top of being photo realistic for a hint of stylism. She is the heroien type right?

Don't quote me on this, but I believe that the all human iris' are between 12-14mm in diameter. The dark haired girl seems to have better iris proportions, but it's hard to tell because it's a profile shot.

As for the rendering of the dude. It's not as convincing as the ladies, you may want to work on him a little more. He looks like the Final Fantasy type made by Steven Geisler.

Keep up the awesome work! Fantastic job!

11 November 2004, 03:35 PM
amazing work ;) :applause:

like the texturing

11 November 2004, 04:55 PM
holy crap this thread has way too many posts. heh. anyways im not going to read througth the entire thing so all i have to say is nice eyes, looks very real. Lips are way too big, however. looks abnormal and a bit scary.... kinda like shes some alien about to bite my head off because her mouth is just that big. sexy = big lips does not mean huge mouth.

11 November 2004, 05:38 PM
In one word... AMAZING !!!
So much detail, really amazing work.
The hair, the eyes, the lips...
it's pure eye-candy !

11 November 2004, 06:02 PM
Outstanding work!
Everything is perfect!
In my opinion the eyes look a bit artificial (just in comparison with the rest of the image)
I'd like to see this in different angles.

Awesome work

11 November 2004, 06:41 PM
That's gorgeous, excellent work.

11 November 2004, 07:08 PM
Well my friends... I am speechless! :argh:

11 November 2004, 07:28 PM
Great work as always guys! ;)

11 November 2004, 07:53 PM
Howly sh*t,

my dog was looking really weird when I aproached my computer screen to kiss her; she looks so real!

11 November 2004, 08:14 PM
Well done mate.Life like for sure.

11 November 2004, 09:01 PM
Just ... ...Awsome !

Good work, very good...

11 November 2004, 09:23 PM
Beautiful work

I just wonder thats your hair done by sasquatch, or photoshop.

Anyway, looking forward to see your wireframe!

11 November 2004, 09:49 PM
One of the best I've seen. Ever.

Good job!

11 November 2004, 10:43 PM

Laaaaame, why are there so many wow posts in this thread. It's exceptional work but chill a bit boys.

11 November 2004, 11:05 PM
This is the most complete approximation of a human face I can remember so far. The softness of the transition is stunning. The top hair covering the outer right part of the
face has still got a layer-look though. Imho less contrast on the cheek.
I love her right eye!

11 November 2004, 11:53 PM
PERFECT!! :bounce: now where are the wireframes?

excellent work my friend, so I have a few questions for ya if you don't mind answering for me, as I too would like to reach this quality of 3d work some day, in the bump map, did you paint all those lines/winkles by hand, or did you develop a brush that does that automatically? Also I was wondering if you used a spec map at all? This is amazing results with just a color map and bump only.

11 November 2004, 10:09 AM
I'm no master of 3D but just my feelings here-
This is not the most realistic female head that I've seen, the only good part is detailed texture.
By good I mean very extraordinary.
So, I should strip off the textures for a moment and comment only on the model.
The proportions are non-ideal, no issues. But each part taken seperetely looks very good [the eyes, lips etc], when you combine them all .......... its too ugly.
The iris is bit too big, the eyebrows are too dense and thick, the neck is too broad, the hair dont match the model.
There's a fish eye lens effect, a bit too grainy etc.....may be all this is intensional. So apologies in advance :)
Overall a quality work....

11 November 2004, 10:32 AM
ouch ! Hard awakening ! Really really amazing !

11 November 2004, 10:33 AM
One of the best photorealist person in the world ~
great work !!!

11 November 2004, 12:12 PM

man..... gmme a brake..... lol
ok tell me your IDEAL person, if God would follow your creation we would probable see clones of yourself walkin aroun earth tellin your name.

guy did perfect job.... and you know it.... it would be great to see how you would model and texture somethin like this......

ultimate work ARK.

oh ... Psan.. i just checked your page... should we comment your work?

11 November 2004, 12:28 PM
'Ideal' now thats a concept that everybody, from Kirkegaard to Clooney, have an opinion on. Psan, a crit based on taste rarely remains objective.

i say, honestly devoid of spite, that i'd really like to see a better photoreal model. if you have indeed seen a better model, perhaps you could share and make us just that little more knowledgeable.

ive said this before and i say it again. major respect to ARK. which i hope isnt misfound. this must be the hundredth request for a wire! if its a biz secret, well, let us know.

11 November 2004, 12:52 PM
Thanks for all the crits and kind words guys :D I am working from home today so cant post any wires until Monday

If you are interested in our work then check out our sites.. we do more than just character modelling  ( --- Game modelling. ( --- High end illustration and broadcast work.

Thanks again.. Will try to post a nice image for you guys every few days or so..

Really, really nice work. Im looking forward to see more pics and wires!

11 November 2004, 01:31 PM
guy did perfect job.... and you know it.... it would be great to see how you would model and texture somethin like this......

:D ok cool it maverick
I never compared myself with him.
As I told, I'm no 3D master, and these are only my subjective.
I tend to nitpick great works too much, but hopefully Ark is not gona get mad at me.

And thanks for checking my page .... ;) , all comments on my [not so great] work are welcome :)

11 November 2004, 01:31 PM
Great stuff.

More like a portrait than a render.
Maybe all the imperfections mentioned help to achieve this.

Putting Sheffield back on the map, nice one.

11 November 2004, 01:36 PM
The hair is very nice,2D or 3D?
how do you creat it.

11 November 2004, 08:52 PM
a masterpiece

11 November 2004, 08:57 PM
Mav3rick, it`s rubbish to say that only a master can say critique of an image...ANyone who thinks that something is wrong may express his/her opinion freely, and politely as Psan did.

As I told also, I have problems with proportions. But it`s my personal opinion, and not as a 3D artist, but as a viewer of the image. I would tell that even if Michelangelo were the artist himself.

11 November 2004, 01:42 AM
Truly awesome work Ark.

What else can I say but absolutely stunning. I love the slightly androgynous feel to the character - just beautiful. Best photoreal LW work I've seen ... period ;)
Been a big fan of your guys work for a while now, ever since Paul C. kindly pointed me to your guys inspiring work. I watched the Muse DVD over and over to see how you did certain things and I just wish you had included more stuff on that baby. Keep up the awe inspiring work guys.

Kind regards,

PS: For the peeps getting hung up on proportions ... go out into the real world ... look around ... open your eyes ... how many perfectly porportioned faces do you see? Should we only model "perfect people" ? Or the everyday life going out arround us.

I can imagine this girl walking down the street anytime of the week ... and I'd happily ask her out for a date. Guess those proportions are right for me :)

11 November 2004, 08:14 AM
Believe me, I`m the most furious anti-general-proportion man ever lived on Earth. But that girl`s proportion are way off. As I told, if it`s intentional, it`s fine with me. And moreover I gave five stars, because this image has stunning visual effect. The world is full of strange proportions, you are right. BUt there is a limit, to where such a deviance is pleasant to the eyes, and somehow this girl is on that limit, to me. But really nice work, and I don`t ask the artist to change anything of the image. I`m sure that this image is finished, and it works as it is. Period.

11 November 2004, 12:55 PM
Simply awesome!

11 November 2004, 01:14 PM
Thanks for all the feedback.

The beauty/proportions thing is all a matter of opinion. Everyones entitled to one regardless. My approach to this wasn't to make everyman's wet dream just an exercise in modelling an texturing an interesing and 'realistic' head.

Hair was done using every possible way I could think of. Eventually got bored and painted over most it for that particular render although there is some Sasquatch underneath. Can't find the original render or the scene so I'm not entirely sure tho. The black haired girls' hair was 3D geometry, no sasquatch at all.

Eye goo was done using geometry. Bit fiddly to model and makes the morph targets a pain. As do the eyelashes and eyebrows.

Eyelashes used cylinders rendered normally, eyebrows used guide chains and Sasquatch.

Not sure if I used any SSS. I did for the vid test but I'm pretty sure this was rendered using just 1 area light. Maybe a bit of radiosity. The secret if there is one is to render the diffuse and spec as sepreate passes turing off the bump map for the diffuse pass.

Color map was 3000x3000 and the bump was 5000x5000. Spec map was probably half that.

Wrinkles are painted using Noise>Add Noise and Texture>Texturiser as well as a custom brush using the 'Crosshatch4' brush tip. Scattering applied.

Here's a wire...

11 November 2004, 10:07 PM
great work.

Took our Spirits Within on what we tried to do for the Final Fantasy picture. If only I could've convinced them to try Lightwave instead of Maya.

Lightwave can't be beat for facial~!

11 November 2004, 12:16 AM
Fantabulous! I want to see more renders! Good Job! How much is Photoshop?

11 November 2004, 01:23 AM
very amazing. only thing i have to say is her lips are a tiny bit too big for my tatse

11 November 2004, 01:26 AM
no more word,
5 stars!

11 November 2004, 02:01 AM
Wow!, If only the art folks over at Playboy could get their models to look as realistic as yours - id renew my subscription for life.

Great Job... Got any more?

11 November 2004, 02:26 AM
excellent work. as for the people saying the lips are to big i disagree. there is no perfect anatomy as anyone who has looked at thousands of reference material can tell you. =)

11 November 2004, 05:30 AM
FF fault is not it`s technology. If it were done in LW, or MAX or XSI or any application, it would have failed, because the photorealistic look wasn`t supported by photorealistic animation. LW I think is a great application, but suffers (still) from many-many technological weakness, what are necessary to complete such a show. I know LWs capabilities well, I used it extensively for years. But I used Maya and now XSI, and I say, the flexibility of these two are unbeatable. But what is sure, Endomorph are sure beating Maya`s morph system into the dust. And XSI`s shape are one step further than Endomorph.

I gave five stars for this, but I don`t think it`s photorealistic. It`s very realistic. Photorealism tries to give the impression of a photo (studio or snaphot), this image looks like a beautiful painting. And it`s perfect.

11 November 2004, 06:13 AM
Wow love the wet eyes:buttrock: , but i'm not sold on the hair not sure why.

11 November 2004, 10:29 AM
very very nice work.
i like your shaders

Best regards

11 November 2004, 10:31 AM

bravo !!!

11 November 2004, 01:59 PM
Wow, very good work and nice detail too! Excellent!

11 November 2004, 02:01 PM
nice textures beautiful work

11 November 2004, 07:46 PM
Sasquatch is such a pain... can never get the results perfect. Very nice try with the eyebrows, still has a little of that weird sasquatch look to it though (not really sure how to explain it better than that), but much better than most uses of sasquatch that I have seen.
No one else has commented on the eyebrows yet? Maybe I'm seeing something that isn't there.

11 November 2004, 08:01 PM
Scroll back several pages and you'll see I posed the question about the eyebrows. Get in line. There are a lot of people waiting for some answers. I just keep looking at the email notifications as they come in, waiting for ARK.

OUTSTANDING !!! reallly amazing stuff, one of the best for sure , love the wet eyes, superb modeling and texturing , thanks for showing us what can be done

11 November 2004, 05:16 PM
My god this is incredible. This is the msot realistic work on a face I ever seen. I just wished you worked the matrix sequels.

11 November 2004, 05:59 PM
Awesome work! Skin looks great. Incredible shading and the hair almost looks like painted. Absolutely perfect!

11 November 2004, 05:34 PM
Fantastic work. Hope to see her from other angle. Now she looks super realistic.

11 November 2004, 08:22 PM
In my haste of passing all the :bounce: s, I missed the explaination of the hair and eyebrows.
Thanks for posting that, but I'm curious why the guide chains for the eyeborws are so dense. It's almost as if you created a guide chain for each hair. Is that true? If so, why did you feel that was superior to using cylinders like you did for the eyelashes?

11 November 2004, 07:05 AM
The eyes looks small for me and the neck is a lil bit huge and the mouth is a bit too wide and the noze is long. I can see it with my own eyes.

The texture/ skin shading is very well done !. Just the modeling... i donno what other peoples say but as i can see is.. im telling the truth. Maybe the character is made like that or its a style.
Lol !

What are you using as a basis for comparison ?

Some kind of mathematical "perfect face" ? :)

11 November 2004, 09:40 AM
This is simply amazing. A lot of 3D "looks real," but almost better than reality...too glossy. You really added some of the subtle imperfections to make it come alive. How much touching up was done in Photoshop? It looks like a photograph.

11 November 2004, 07:10 PM
WOW!! is that 3D or a photo, the skin is so stunning its beyond words. very well done, there is a lot of work around but Ive got to say that this is one of the best images Ive seen. :)

11 November 2004, 07:36 PM
so realistic!

11 November 2004, 09:25 PM
One of the best head models that I have ever seen!!! Very impressive.

11 November 2004, 03:54 PM

This is the most beatifull 3d babe i've ever seen..... I'm in love!!
Does she exist? if so where can i find her:love:

Enough kidding around. Keep up the good work.
I like to see more renders of it.

AMAZING Details

Your work is flawless and superb.

11 November 2004, 05:29 AM
you know, it's these thread posts(I mean the artist by that) that make my heart, mind, and soul happy, proud, encouraged, intimidated. I thank you for showing us what talent can human kind possess.:thumbsup::thumbsup::bounce:

... seem to worry some people. For a better real live example than Angelina Jolie, see Xenia Seeberg ("Xev" from Lexx). So well within the normal range and quite easy on the eye too.

11 November 2004, 07:59 PM
woah that's soo amazing!

11 November 2004, 07:37 AM
Incredibly and impressively realistic... Had to recheck my browser to make sure I was actually in a 3D forum and not a photograph forum.

Great job! But- in all honesty I can't stand the lips. Maybe you can tell I've never been a fan of angelina jolie...

The whole face seems absolutely perfect- except for the humongous lips.

I'm afraid I agree. Let some of the air out! Other that that beautiful work. I will be glad when the exagerated lip thing fades out of fashion.....something very unnnatural about it. By the way wasn't this model the character on the billboard on the Muse video?????

Those lips look very familiar......

11 November 2004, 11:48 PM
seems you made the hair with photoshop . . . would like to see what they look like in rela 3d ! :D i think the bottom of the lip is alittle to sharp but maybe i m wrong cause on the anim it s not the same . . .

Realy good job i love it !!

Congratulations, is very nice.....

Texturing and modeling much... much... much.... goooooooooooooooooood

really amazing art work:)

i like the the texture detail around eyes

11 November 2004, 09:39 PM
That skin is so perfect! I was just reading wired magazine that featured an article about digital beauties. They had that great image of the freckled girl with the barret. That one is officially in second place now! Your image made a new standard. About the porportions: they are better than real, and thats what 3D is al about for me.

This image will grace my desktop for quite some time!

Title: Jenny
Name: Ark Game
Country: United Kingdom
Software: LightWave 3D, Photoshop

This character was created as an in house project to developed photo realistic skin shading and rendering techniques. for a closer look check out the high res image.

I have to give you major props on producing such a life piece, if one did not know any better one might be mistaken for think they were looking at a still from a movie. Also it very inspiring for me as a multimedia student to see works of this caliber being produced in the uk.

11 November 2004, 08:54 PM
There's something not right about her eyes. I think it's her left eye (our right). I think it's out too far. Either that or both eyes are too far out. Also, the photoshop grainy effect really mutes out a lot of the great detail. Nice work.

11 November 2004, 12:55 PM
I have to agree with some people that is not the most beauty I have seen but... the render is PERFECT to me.

11 November 2004, 10:18 AM

Too good to just let it sink :)

I know you probably don't read these forums Mr Wright because you are way too cool for that :) and you have the boy Busby for such trivial matters anyways. Just wanted to say stunning work as usual and I hope ARK affords you the oportunity to work on the kind of projects your talents deserve.

All the best ARK! May the force be with you...

Mucho respect

11 November 2004, 10:39 AM
Its a great rendering, definitly one of the best Ive seen. There are couple of thing I did react on though. If you take a look at her right eye (from her POV) the dark area beneathe the eybrow - the look is bit dry and rough, this also appears on the nose between the nostrils. To see it you have to look at the highres. The other issue is more lighting. The shadows feel a bit too dark and too black, the shading of the skin is great though. Nice work, is the shader upfor download somwhere ;)

11 November 2004, 12:39 PM
thisone is awesome!
the skin looks very real.
exelent job!

11 November 2004, 01:55 PM
Amazing image, just amazing. Very cute too! Just one thing missing - most girls tend to have at least a trace of a moustache... plans for version 2 perhaps! ;)

11 November 2004, 04:56 AM
This is an absolutly Stunning Image. How did you create the wet eye effect?

11 November 2004, 08:09 AM

12 December 2004, 06:05 PM
realy cool...
another carrot to chase here at cgtalk :)

12 December 2004, 02:26 PM
Wow, that's just utterly amazing.

The only little crit I can come ut with is that the lower lip looks like it is a bit too "carved" - the lower edge is pretty hard for lips. And also (I don't know if this was your intention) but the nose bone also looks a bit carved - almost a bit square-ish.

But the skin still wins me over, this is the most realistic skin I've ever seen!

12 December 2004, 06:37 AM
Aki Ross get lost! this is the real deal! ;)

my post:

12 December 2004, 09:55 AM
I like this character very very much...

Comparing this image to Aki Ross, is very unprofessional. We have seen Aki in many scenes, with different light setups, etc. Aki worked pretty well.

This character is visible in only one light setup, and it works with this light setup pretty pretty well. But what if you`d put her into a dim lit room, with a neon ighting?

12 December 2004, 05:21 AM
I love this picture.

Amazing texture work... and the eyes are magic.

This is a question for ARK VFX:

This is beautiful work, the issue with the lips is pretty much an objective one. Big over infalted lips are in style these days so there you have it. Problem is the fake lips look so .......fake and in my opinion that is not natural beauty. But then again that is a matter of perception as you can see here and other posts both for or against this aspect.

Now that that is behind us. My question is this I saw this character in the Meuse video that ARK produced,(the billboards in the city and the billboard in space, no mistaking those lips!) the video however from what I could gather was produced by Colonel Blimp for Ark as a contractor. Did you build this for Ark or did you build this model for Colonel Blimp. The modeling in that video was really great by the way.......

Just curious.
