The Story:

Itīs the year 3072. Man has discovered new worlds and has found ways to settle down on other planets, after making life on earth impossible. Inugaja 29, a planet with an athmosphere of extremely toxic gas and ion storms isnīt the best place to be, but the high population forces people to use every space they can get. To avoid contact with this gas they created buildings 300 meters above the ground standing on big high endurable poles. Above this big toxic cloud the athmosphere contains a little bit oxygen that is filtered by Otwo-Facilities and is used to recycle the air in the colony.

Many years after this colony was built near space bases get emergency signals from it. Workers of the colony that have to check the poles and go down to the surface by elevators didnīt return and earthquakes already made two normal buildings and 3 Otwo-Facilities fall.

You are a member of the IES the "Intergalactic Emergency Squad" and your team was called to find out what is going on down there and to save as many people as you can if the problem canīt be solved.

Right now you and your team are above the toxic athmosphere of Inugaja 29 ready to jump down from the IES dropship in your specials suits and jet packs.

Cool, but painful and wounded looking soldier. Was he outside when he/she was shot? If so don't forget to make the blood droplets floating off on their trajectories. It would tell more story to see a reflection in his/her helmet visor of what they are looking at, or even the space around them in your final work. Keep going - keep up the good work. Your story description highlights a detailed imagination. ;)

11-07-2004, 07:49 PM
Thanx for your reply!

The idea with the reflection is really good and i think i will do this!
I donīt know where he got shot :)
was just painting around... the IES members in the ship wonīt have
any wounds.

Thanx again :)

11-07-2004, 08:00 PM
that IES member looks great, and I agree about putting reflections in the visor to tell more of the story

Hi Josh,

great to see u in:thumbsup:
Hey mate, your sketches come along great and your storyline is quite creative ( I like the idea
of the O2 Towers a lot!)!... ,
...your start of modelling looks really promising....:bounce: but maybe one little hint: for my taste there's a little bit to less "epic" feeling in your concept ...Hmm.perhaps a bigger view from the platform the soldiers stay with quite a big spacestation in sight...(?)
Keep on flowin, dude!! Lookin' forward to see more of the I.E.S. Troops:beer:

11-08-2004, 11:43 AM
Hi Sascha,

thanx for your reply.
Yes you are right... the epic style doesnīt come out
in my concept sketch...
In the background will be much more stuff. There will
be a big evac ship and you will see more and bigger
buildings so i hope it will get more epic.

11-08-2004, 11:13 PM
Sorry guys, had to do some other work today...

Model of the complete IES Member will be online soon!

11-09-2004, 11:51 AM

This will be a IES Evac Ship in the background.

It can hold up to 120.000 people.
The rotating tubes on each side generate artificial gravitation for itīs passengers. The transport elevator is mounted on a ring, that can also rotate and lift up and down to reach every point on the outer side of the tube.

11-09-2004, 11:55 AM
I think it is epic enough for the theme.....But the idea is epic in itself......The size is not all that matters when epic is thought of.........I like your start on the modeling as well joachim.......Keep it up,you have potential with this, and I wish you the best to get there.......:arteest:

11-09-2004, 12:17 PM
Hi Virtuoso,

thanx for your reply :)
itīs a great honor to me!

yes, size isnīt all that matters *g*

Greets Joachim

11-09-2004, 12:27 PM
Cool! :applause:

Only one thing up to now. I'm curious about the horizon line of the toxic planet..

Nice helmet! Keep going!

11-09-2004, 12:37 PM
Hi Andrey,

youīre right...
this horizon line should show, that itīs a sea of clouds,
but the clouds that make this line are so far away, that
they wonīt make such waves...

Thank U and
Greetings from Joachim :)

He will get more detail, but i think itīs already time to present him...

11-10-2004, 01:25 AM
Aloha Josh,

hey man, what a fast progress. ***Da schmeissts mi ja vom Stuhl weg***
Very nice modelling. Clean and detailled.Super!
Let us see some wires....(yes, yes- the old oglu-comment:p )

Rock on like that:buttrock:

11-10-2004, 02:18 AM
nice rocket soldier man!!
remenber the stromtroopers hehe
best luck

11-10-2004, 05:25 AM
I like the simplisity in the character, very clean and well designed. Good stuff.

11-10-2004, 10:43 AM
this feels like christmas :)

oh yes, i forgot to give a wire with it...
you said this would be clean modelling.
hmm, maybe it was better to sent no wire *g*

hehe just kiddinī
next time a wire will be there!

oh yes it looks really similar to the star war stormtroppers...
i didnīt take references from the net... this just happened
and i could do nothing against it :)
but as i said i will add more detail and i will do this based just on
the image in my head an on the scribbles so it will be more different
in the further stages...

More detail will follow!
And there are still some bad triangles to get rid of...

11-11-2004, 05:13 AM
Cool characters. I agree that they look just a teeny bit like stormtroopers, but that could be just my eyes. Just don't make them white...

Nice color contrast in the concept sketch, too. The orange and the blue-green--as near color wheel opposites--really give punch to the image.

ready for texturing...

Unwrapping wasnīt really funny...
I added some scratches and worn out stuff to the diffuse color and bump map channels of the suit.

Any ideas, what could make it more real and impressive... maybe a specular map will help...

This is just a rough scene that makes the environment for the IES Members.
The toxic athmosphere is still missing!

What do u people out there think about it...
I could really need some critiques!!!

11-15-2004, 10:42 PM
Good sketches and modeling skills! I agree with the other people (although they had said this very often...) The soldier looks like the stormtroopers from starwars...it is because of the mask's shape. Maibe if you would follow your sketch which has a very fresh and original idea...
The background and foreground are great! love them
Hope to see some more soon

11-21-2004, 12:44 AM
Hi Josh, sorry about my late reply - u know - time's going too fast....and work's too much...

Hey mate, thats really nice what u're doing here:thumbsup: Love your char - one little crit about the texture: it reminds me of some kind of wooden material...maybe a cool idea, but for space....(?)
The other said, that your soldier looks like a imperial stormtrooper - what about some texture with signs and pattern or simply a chrom-alike texture etc. to take away that feeling of the good ol' starWars troopers....only to take away the focus of the armor shape - just more focussing the material and texture of it...stormtroopers hadn't any signs ect, only kinda of white plastics suits ;-))....

...modelling look great and your background seems to be fantastic so far...
looking forward to see breathtaking updates, mate:bounce:

11-21-2004, 02:44 AM
Hi Joachim.................I think you have one pretty nice character there.......Turning out quite nice.........I think you can add sigils,or a crest, scroll patterns to the outfit for even more effect.......... some more worn and torn look to the armor......Just some thoughts, taste things.......Either way I think you have done a heads up job here.....Keep at it strong,it's coming along well......................:arteest:

11-21-2004, 03:37 AM

I like what you've got going here. The model looks great. Love the fact that the back pack is part of the suit. He's very solid and 3D ;)- Work on the composition a bit thought. Good luck

11-21-2004, 03:18 PM
Hey thanks for your replies :)

this week i couldnīt do much as you saw,
but i think the next days i will go on as usual.

and thanks for your really helpful crits out there!
i really appreciate these kinds of comments...

This is the scene where all my objects meet and what will make the final image. For now there is really no detail in it, but it helps me to work into the right direction. More IES Members will be there and each object will be worked over...
A real problem is, that I cannot use global illumination, cause it cracks my system up and take hours to render one image...

12-04-2004, 05:13 PM
very cool story , I liked it alot. The environmental suit model is pretty cool too...
and weird cause it reminds me of a fish on dry land :)

Nice composition. Actually very strong and dramating character posing. Even at such an early stage it already tells that something pretty terrible is about to happen...
I really like it:applause:

Now Iīm working out all of the models.
Here is a W.I.P. of my pole building model.

12-13-2004, 04:52 PM
Hey Joachim,

Your scene is coming along fine, I like the model of the rocket guy and I like the way you presented the story . I do think for the textures of the rocket guy some sort of markings or lettering and some contrasting colors would help out.
Great job so far.

Now I added the more detailed buildings, added another IES member jumping out of the dropship and changes some colors.

12-14-2004, 09:47 AM
Great job man! But change this santa nicolaus's colors:) I would change the white for some light gray/blue metallic, and red for dark grey/blue metallic. Simply domore tests! The models are awsome, you must find suitable colors for them:thumbsup:

12-14-2004, 10:39 AM
I like the modeling and design of the soldiers. Very cool. The platforms kinda look like a deathmatch jumpgate thing. Not sure what you will do to this by the end but it is looking good so far. Very nice work. I will be back for updates. Keep it up!

01-01-2005, 03:49 AM
Anymore updates? I was liking this.. Please post some up soon. Have a happy new year.

Happy New Year everybody...

sorry, but i simply didnīt have one second to work on this or other things over the last
day. as if it wouldnīt be enough that there was christmas, also many friends and my
girlfriend had birthday so it was double hectic :)

now iīm back and have a really big pile of other work to do, but i will do all
my best to keep you people not waiting any longer...

Here is the scene rendered without textures so you can see better how the lighting in my scene works.
I placed 4 lights in the dropship, 1 outside and higher above to give the buildings a little light and 1 orange light, that makes the light of the sun behind the planet. I just use shadow maps with high resolution because rendering times explode.

I wish I could have used Mental Ray, but it also takes much to long to render...
