Welcome to the challenge,
Hope to see your first concepts.

11 November 2004, 08:28 PM (

After conqueering all the solar systems of the known galaxie, at the beginning of the XXXII century, the human specie discover new and strange form of life, Those entityes was coming from a dark zone of the universe, cientists named them the shadows, humans used this name because they only see them as darks entityes, no infra-reds or scanners or last technologies could reveal their composition or contact with them, at the beginning only some fregates and cruisers disappears, some fighters attak them, pilots says, that when they fired on the shadows they disappear in a cloud of dark particles. Cientists discover other incredible events, big parts of the universe loose entire solar systems, the universe was becoming darker... the terrible news come in the XXXIII century, the shadows was directly implicated in those events, and every day more suns of the known galaxie was shut down. billions of human life and empires was lost... at least, only the arkanan empire with his fearsome troops stay to stop the coming of the shadows to the original human civilisation... the earth.

11 November 2004, 07:52 PM
wow that's a great start. The image is well composed structually, color wise and has nice details too. Cool stuff :)

11 November 2004, 10:44 PM (

I´ve sarted modeling the spaceships, now I will map them and start the dock in 3d, as you can see in the concept-sketch, I will model the pilot the last... the final modeling will have some changes... more details and props that the 2d concept.

11 November 2004, 11:54 PM
very nice man very nice, keep going

11 November 2004, 11:56 PM
Really really great cncept and a verry good looking moddel:applause:

11 November 2004, 12:39 AM
WOW that's a really cool concept and modelling!!! I see that you are working very fast. I like the perspective, and specially the pilot in the first plane. The design of the spaceships are really owesome (how do you write that?) I love the detail
Keep on working!!!

11 November 2004, 12:41 AM
Thanks guys, I´ve tried to design ships that doesn´t remember star wars galactica or similar styles... but my own universe, I hope i will obtain a final look so original as I can...

11 November 2004, 12:49 AM
WOW that's a really cool concept and modelling!!! I see that you are working very fast. I like the perspective, and specially the pilot in the first plane. The design of the spaceships are really owesome (how do you write that?) I love the detail
Keep on working!!!

11 November 2004, 10:21 PM (

I optimize the spaceships to put them in the scene, and start modeling the dock or mother-ship, and also help me to give volumes and perspective to the scene.

11 November 2004, 12:20 PM
A lot of good details here... good concept sketch Stef... I like the design of vessels... bravo... j'attends la suite avec impatience... ça va pêter de partout à mon avis... good luck :scream:

11 November 2004, 12:55 PM
Very nice designs, and great composition. Keep going!

11 November 2004, 03:15 AM
I can see why you would have to optimize the scene!!
I was wondering what method you are using to create the ships? Your you using sub-ds or spline based modeling. I am having the hardest time using standerd geometrical solutions for ship design, and Im not good using spline cages. Or do you use nurbs??

The detail of these ships are phenominal. Really I have to say that I am envious of your mechanical modeling skill!!

Compositionally great!!

My only critic is that I dont see any story going on here. Have anything in mind????

11 November 2004, 09:29 AM
Lemog: merci j´espere que ça va péter... faudra que j´en ai le temps.
m@.: The final composing will be a little different, you know in 3D with the camera, Fov etc... you can play, test, lightning, etc... better than in 2D

WazaR: Really I don´t made the space-ships in low-res, I put a optimize modificator (Max) to the ships to put them in the scene and test placements, volumes, etc... I use box-modeling fot boths space-ships, for the story I have full of ideas but my english is not so ggod to do here a little story as I would like, but I´m very inspired by arthur C. Clarke. (y gracias por los complimentos, como ves se me da mejor el español ;)

11 November 2004, 07:18 PM (

space-ships textured, I will use Vray to render the scene, if I have some time I will post those ships rendered with Vray. The next will be the modeling of the dock-mother ship...

11 November 2004, 07:57 PM
Stefgrafx, these ships are awesome, great texturing i must say. very well done. But personally i would change light blue color to somethig darker or desaturated. For me is too vivid, it remainds me toys or something.

11 November 2004, 09:56 PM
great realy -good deailed! keep on working best wishes!:applause:

11 November 2004, 03:04 PM
the texturing really brings it to life.. my compliments

11 November 2004, 03:49 PM
I agree with turbinea...that light blue too saturated... but in general it looks awesome! great work!

11 November 2004, 07:13 PM (

I add some specular-maps and made some tests with V-ray...

11 November 2004, 09:34 PM
Waouw excellent sketch... and the vehicule is very good, amzing modeling and texture!!

Keep going! :buttrock:

11 November 2004, 09:56 PM (

Textures screenshots, some textures I create for those spaceship, next step will be the dock... and some lightnings tests...

11 November 2004, 10:09 PM
the ships and the textures loos really great...good work here!!!

11 November 2004, 10:44 PM
Holy smoking pygmies dude you are good.

I like the harsh look of the models.

Y si, me dio cuenta que hay muchos hispanos en esta competencia!!

John Pasco
11 November 2004, 12:11 AM
Nice textures.

11 November 2004, 12:15 AM
wow! :buttrock:

Very good!

11 November 2004, 12:45 AM
Wow dude you sure know how to texture. The color scheme on that ship is awesome and everything flows together.

11 November 2004, 12:50 AM
Really good-starwars quality!

11 November 2004, 03:19 AM
hey what up. I love that ship, its nicely modeled and textured. You making the competition more challengeable. keep it up. I can't wait to see the final project.

11 November 2004, 07:10 AM
Your ships is fantastic with these texture... true good work man... I like that  good color choice...

11 November 2004, 08:47 AM
awesome work man. I really like your style of modeling and of course your texture skills.
hope to see more of your stuff...

11 November 2004, 10:35 AM
Your stuff is going well, real cool from the start. I really love you models. I happen to stumble onto you site the other day, there was heaps of great space stuff, man this theme's probably your best strengh :scream: we'll all have to watch out for your stuff. Super great work though, i can't wait to see your final image.

11 November 2004, 05:35 PM
hey that shpis are nice and the idea too.
keep working

11 November 2004, 07:43 PM (

Modeling the dock, I dont model the bottom of the dock because in the first plane I will put the cockpit/pilot as you can see in the 2d conceot sketch...

11 November 2004, 08:22 PM (

I made 2 test for the lightning, one like the 2d concept-sketch and the other one as day light, before starting the textures of the docks and merge the space-ships and others elements.

11 November 2004, 10:10 PM
o my god!!.. taht is soo insane detail..!!! m completely speechless...

11 November 2004, 10:20 PM
hey man i think that the dylight style is better. It looks more realistic, but the other one is too cartoon:D

11 November 2004, 12:22 AM more to say!!

11 November 2004, 12:36 AM
dylight style is better..
much more realistic... and whith ships!.. will look excelent!

you are runing to win!..

11 November 2004, 07:52 AM
Thanks guys, yes finaly I believe the final image will be as the daylight render... it look like more realistic and show more details...

11 November 2004, 08:50 AM
Whaouw... quelle avancée.... c'est vraiment magnifique que j'en perd le peu d'anglais que j'ai... that's so much fantastic Stef... congratulation for this masterpiece

11 November 2004, 01:08 PM

11 November 2004, 01:54 AM
excellent designs you've got here. really impressive work.

11 November 2004, 02:00 AM
impressive stuff stefgrafx , nice details and modeling , i really like the space dock with blue light . The Pov is cool in tha last update.

Keep on :buttrock:

11 November 2004, 03:37 PM (

Some map a realize for the docks, 60-70% of the mapping-dock is realized...

11 November 2004, 04:22 PM
Great work, fantastic detail on the models. Can't wait to see the final image. :applause:

11 November 2004, 03:27 PM (

mapping of the docks, this is a quick default scanline render, to apreciate the specular maps I will made tests with Vray. I have to merge more details for the dock... bottom, more technical props, and also merge the space-ships...

11 November 2004, 03:59 PM
Very detailed models you have there... great job!

11 November 2004, 06:55 PM

I like your camera angle... really interresting view.

11 November 2004, 06:55 PM
stefgrafx, your texturing is awesome!!! very good, very good. and i like the daylight version than orange one.

11 November 2004, 08:04 PM (

test with V-ray render system to see how react the specular-maps, I will merge ships later... and next step starting modeling the pilot... perhaps some detailed 2d sketchs before...

11 November 2004, 09:47 PM
That is very impressive modeling and texturing. think it's great work! Am inspired to see how effective good maps can work out. Am looking forward to seeing the pic come together. Good luck! :applause: Claireabella

11 November 2004, 10:20 PM
amazing texture on the amazing model!! simply amazing:bounce: It has an unique mood, which I like very much. I'm not sure about it, but I would make some tests with a small lights on this building. Some small lighing elements could make this image more real, and gice a bit live to this building. But it could destroy this unique mood.... so I advice to simply try:)

good work so far!

11 November 2004, 10:40 PM
I like the vray test rendering... a sweet mood but with a lot of contrast... I adore... I'm so curious to see the scene with ships...

11 November 2004, 01:02 PM
superbe, tout ca bien eclairer ca va taper

11 November 2004, 09:11 PM
arturro: I don´t think I´m going too put too much lights I whant a dark "atmosphere" not a blade runner style... and the pilot that will be in the foreground, will have some lights on the helmett etc to give some contrasts to the final image, how say the guys from the mars-rover web page "stay tunning" ;)

Lemog: I hope don´t have too much problem merging all the elements... my CPU is a little afraid :(

I´m doing some render test to see at how resolution I can render the final image... For the challenge the guidelines ask for 3636x2657 pixels... I don´t know if people here remember that :) For my part Y believe I could render the final image at 2600/2800 pixels Hight...

11 November 2004, 09:18 PM
eeeeeee. i dont konw what to
great work:eek:

11 November 2004, 06:24 AM
nice texturing mate and great lighting!

11 November 2004, 06:59 AM
grat modling and great texturing

11 November 2004, 07:06 AM
Your work is great, the work with the texture is amaizing because I can appreciate the beauty of simplicity, with a very nice color and a good ilumination the textures look very pretty. Good job there!!

the sparky
11 November 2004, 10:11 AM
I love this. The modelling is elegant and full of detail and the textures rock. I love seeing your texture maps.

I can't wait to see the final.

11 November 2004, 04:37 PM
Fantastic modeling and texturing. Wow, this is going to be one tough contest. So many excellent artists. Great work!

12 December 2004, 07:46 PM (

before starting the modeling of the pilot I made some 2d concept to choose a design for the helmet and cockpit...

12 December 2004, 08:18 PM
Great progress so far.. the helmet designs look very cool too .. I prefer the third one in the row. Keep going !

12 December 2004, 08:57 PM
Nice Sketche... the look of the helmet and cockpit equipment agree me at 100%... go

12 December 2004, 09:12 PM
looks great mate... but the helmet looks a little bit elongated.... anyways... dude u got ur thing going...the cocpit setup is amaging.. cant wait to c it all in 3d...good luck

12 December 2004, 09:19 PM
Great job man, i l ike your texturing and your models too.

12 December 2004, 11:40 PM
I'm liking the scope of this whole deal here... Some nice posts today.

12 December 2004, 11:46 PM (

Modeling the pilot, I have to add some details... the cockpit, and next step texturing...

12 December 2004, 11:55 PM
Now that is what I call a pilot model... great! as I saw your previous textures, I can't wait to see this guy textured:twisted:

12 December 2004, 12:00 AM

12 December 2004, 09:54 AM

12 December 2004, 10:33 AM
So many cool artists around here great modelling and i really love your concepts

12 December 2004, 01:56 PM
In the dock image, i'd get rid of that ground plane, and extend the buildings downwards. Then i'd have some fog or haze there. That'll exagerrate the sense of scale even more.

12 December 2004, 05:20 PM (

A render test, to see haw interect shadows etc...pilot + cockpit... need to add more details to the cockpit..

12 December 2004, 06:33 PM (

I´ve finished the modeling of the pilot and cockpit... perhaps after finishing mapping-texturing I will add some little props... will see

12 December 2004, 07:28 PM
great drawings and great modeling.
I look forward to more!

12 December 2004, 07:56 PM
very nice. I want to point to one thing - cockpit has much less amount of detail compared to rest of scene, especially hangar wall. considering this is foregorund it should be more detailed or interesting - (my humble suggestion is big barrel of gun from right to left just under bottom of window and that minor details move more down. barrel can cast shadow on side of hull to break flat side). sure, textures can improve things a lot and this only my suggestion so it's up to you. anyway great progress

12 December 2004, 09:29 PM
:applause: Keep on going
You are a real artist.

12 December 2004, 10:20 PM
turbinea: thanks for the sugestion, but I´m not sure tu put more details or as you say a barrel-of gun (really don´t like too much those typicals designs)... look at a real pilot or cockpit (or star wars-pilots)... and there are not full of details... but perhaps I will add some little more inside... and work on textures.. logos etc...

12 December 2004, 10:37 PM
I like that... it's powerfull... I love the design of the helmet Stef

12 December 2004, 08:34 AM
looking great you might win this contest good luck

12 December 2004, 07:09 PM
I'm astonished with your detailed pilot... great job stefgrafx.

12 December 2004, 07:29 PM
The amount of FINE detail is insane. WOW.

12 December 2004, 07:53 PM
wow man :argh: ,following this thread :buttrock:

12 December 2004, 08:32 PM
ur presentation of wips are aweosme and so are ur works... i'm get very inspired looking at ur works.. very clean modleing and amount of detail.. very nicely done... keep up the ultra fine works mate.. nothing to crit

12 December 2004, 04:29 PM
Thanks Guys...

VHashishV: I´m trying to do a "planning" for each part of the entire image, time I can dedicate to the modeling, texturing, lightning, composing and final render... I could add more details... but don´t whant to have surprises at the end ;)

overcontrast: I´m very happy if people can be inspired by my works... like I´m inspired by others people here... it´s what i call "a real community"

12 December 2004, 11:13 PM (

Start texturing the pilot... add more details to the cockpit... and finishing texturing...

12 December 2004, 11:42 AM
Great stuff here! I like your work all the way! Designs are great and models really come to life with that insane textures!!

The near ship you've started texturing looks awsome so far!
I'll be watching! :bounce:

12 December 2004, 01:50 PM
 very beautiful textures... the next step now plizzzzzzzzzzzzzz :scream:

12 December 2004, 02:28 PM
You remain very true to your concept sketch... The modelling details are very cool....

12 December 2004, 03:25 PM
early sun rendering effects always impressed me, your milestones are very inspiring! good luck

12 December 2004, 05:53 PM
Hi stefgrafx

nice textures I like all your details, look forward to seeing the final image, you could have the control lights reflecting on his face, only a thought,

check my thread
Paul. P.Patina....................

12 December 2004, 06:07 PM
test with V-ray render system to see how react the specular-maps, I will merge ships later... and next step starting modeling the pilot... perhaps some detailed 2d sketchs before...
Very nice balance of light and midtones across that surface! Really brings out the details.
Cool concept!

12 December 2004, 07:56 AM
patina: yes I´m going to put some lightning into the cockpit... that will reflct on the glass off the helmett... perhaps a gloss-silver textur... reds-orange lights that also contrast with the whole scene "dark-ambience"

Others guys thanks for yours " :applause: "

Tonight I will post a finished version of this pilot "with lightnings... how say the nasa team " stay tuned" ;)

12 December 2004, 08:54 AM
yeah baby, yeah... you are one of my absolute favs. hope to see more of your work. impressive and excellent stuff you got there. love the ships and the char. keep it up

12 December 2004, 02:04 PM
looking good. Nice detailwork so far. I like what I am seeing. I will check back for more.

12 December 2004, 08:03 PM (

Pilot textured... and lightning-test, next step...lightning the dock-port, I will paint over the final image to retouch some textures, give more details etc...

12 December 2004, 09:02 PM
Nice work, very impressive models.

12 December 2004, 09:49 PM
Nice update, nice progress, Stefgrafx! I like pilot's helmet, i like lightninng, i like textures color scheme. Good job!

12 December 2004, 10:24 PM
amazing stuff, the diffuse color of these materials are awsome... but in my opinion it should be more metallic. I mean bigger specular and shiness(thinking mainly anout the ship, and a lile bit about the helmet)

12 December 2004, 06:03 PM
Salut Stefgrafx, your stuff,
It's looking just great!!.............
I like this cool technical stuff so much,
the only one think is that your metall shaders looks a bit stonely
(but arturro tald already about this)
So, I'm just really interested in your next posts, and waiting for your progress...

12 December 2004, 08:37 PM
Just stopping by to tip my cap to some very nice art/work here Stephane.........Your style and work here match other very nice work of yours I have seen in the past.....This is my first sighting of your thread, they can get lost in the sea of threads very quickly......But I am happy to have found it,it's a very nice piece of modeling and textures, with a well thought out scene, nice balance..................I think eye candy, pivotal moement, and action will be the most important, and you have this all covered.........All the best to you......And now that I know you are here,I will be back for more for sure.........Work hard and well.......:arteest: :arteest:

12 December 2004, 12:01 AM

12 December 2004, 02:45 AM
I'm geting depresed looking at your work ..... je, je, je .... just a joke .... completly amazing man ..... one little question for learning a bit : Do you unwrap your models or do you use some plugin like textporter? .... thanks

Have a nice day!

12 December 2004, 03:26 AM
they need to make real spaceships look as cool as these ones!

12 December 2004, 08:40 AM
The new ship is working pretty nice so far!

I can't say the scale of the ship....could you give some comparison?

12 December 2004, 09:41 AM
terraarc: it nwill be between a fighter and cargo-ship... but if you look at the cockpit i put on the top of the ship... and the pilot I post before you can have a idea.

emonimo: yes I use textporter, for 80% of the maps, and others are flat, cylinder etc maps.

I´ll try to update as soon as possible... but with christmas etc... there´s life behind 3D ;)

12 December 2004, 09:52 AM
Thanks stefgrafx, just saw the cockpit. It is surely big! Waiting for the textures...when you're up to it of course!

"It's Christmas ..... all over ..... again!!...."

12 December 2004, 06:45 AM
Aaaaaaaaaaaah... celui là je l'adooooooooooooooooooooore... design like that ->

12 December 2004, 08:45 AM
I think the final version will have some more details... I proceed as I draw... For this model I made the global shape of the ship, when I´m satisfied I texture it, and I add details that I believe will give more realism to the entire modele...

12 December 2004, 05:51 PM
i also pray for you to do sooooo......

12 December 2004, 09:12 PM

cooool ship

12 December 2004, 10:13 PM
hi- first- these are amazing models and textures- qudos to you:)
a little suggestion- try lowering the blur on the textures of the buildings and space craft they seem a little to blury..
keep up the great work!!!

Hi stefgrafx,

I was curious about how it would look textured, but now I`m just jealous

12 December 2004, 03:35 PM
Hi there Stéphane!

I've been wanting to post some comments on your awesome work for a long time now, but I always ended up being totally numb drooling over your updates, unable to write a single word...

Exxagerating, am I? Nope... imho your modelling and texturing work is some of the best I've seen to date, bar none. And I've seen some amazing work...

The fact that you can handle modelling and texturing at this level is already a great achievement, but when complemented by good solid concept design and visualization it really makes all the difference... what more can I say, congratulations! You've got yourself another fan :) ...

Ok, now enough complimenting, let's do some crits...
The only thing I can point concerning your work is shading. While being a fantastic texture painter I think that your surfaces tend to look very similar in terms of shading. This happens a lot with 3D artists which have strong traditional painting skills, there is the temptation of doing everything in the texture itself...

While this does work to a level, there are certain properties of a surface that have more to do with specific qualities of the material they're made of, and this is translated trough shading setup.

I've seen some people mentioning this on your thread already, for example, imho your "metal" surfaces should be more reflective (shiny) and have more darkened edges. You can use reflection masks to make your material shine underneath your paint since paint and metal surfaces behave very differently. These liitle subtleties really go a long way in creating a truly believable look...

Fallof maps, masks, blend materials, blurred reflection maps, multi layer paint shaders, you name it! Everything goes as long as each specific material is easily identifiable...

It's with the utmost sincerity that I say that your work is among the most impressive I've seen lately, so I hope my feedback drives you to excel even more and gives a small contribution to an already overwhelming talent...

Take care and all the best to you

12 December 2004, 05:08 PM
sweet modeling - wonderful textures - awesome work so far!
What renderer do you use?

12 December 2004, 11:03 PM
Rui_Padinha: I agree with your critics about my textures, for example for this challenge I use V-ray, and Don´t use vrayMtl, only Difuse-Metal textures with specular-levels... I will have to do some tests, metal shaders etc... and also render this scene with Fallof maps, masks, blend materials, blurred reflection maps as you say will take mi lot of time that I dont have :( and the time render will increase a lot also.. for each tests etc... but you are right, I must spend more time investigating Shaders.. also would like investigate animation, particules effects etc... no time, perhaps in a other life ;)

12 December 2004, 11:09 PM (

Some textures I realise For this model... diffuse-maps and specular-maps... next week I will post The rendered scene..

12 December 2004, 06:47 PM
hi Stephane,

I love the that's better. tsk...tsk..tsk so lazy to think...hahahahh...and what a post! Anyway, just take it like i was talking to you not the art work. Putain, je suis deg de pas avoir vu ton thread avant ! ça casse bien comme d'hab ! Vraiment superbe boulot ! Tu as mon vote !
(Oh le gars qui se couche par terre !)

Waoo ! Amazing ! I'm sad not to see this thread before ! It is a great amazing work as usual ! really cool work ! You've got my vote !
(Am I becoming a carpet ?) :)

01 January 2005, 05:35 PM
The texturing is great, il like the dirt maps over the color layer.
Lightning is very good too. I hope it will look ok when you put those 2 together

01 January 2005, 06:06 PM (

here a quick sheme of the differents parts I render. I render 1º-the dock 2º-the ship 3º-the pilot, I can treat each part more easily, for exemple I Get darker the backroundd, sharpen a little the ships... etc

01 January 2005, 06:20 PM (

layers collapsed :) now I will let this image sleeping 1-2 day, its a system I use when I´m working some time on the same image. I take again the image with a fresh look. I will paint some details, add a global tone to the entire image etc...

01 January 2005, 06:40 PM
awesome!!!   ,oh,very beautifull

01 January 2005, 06:47 PM
Great progress here :applause:

The only thing I`m not sure is the ship on the forground... seems in strange position.. like the roll was too heavy... difficult to explain.... maybe when you add the glass to the cockpit that will be better :curious:

Great work from far

01 January 2005, 07:37 PM
mé un ti chouille de fog ca ferait pas de mal pour detacher tout ca...

meme 2d entre chaque vaisseau et le doc

a small fog would be good to sperated little bit and give depth and impression of grand :)

01 January 2005, 08:35 PM
yes perhaps some fog effects.. dont know... for the glass off the cockpit dont believe I´m going to put one... with the reflects etc, the details of pilot will desapears :(

01 January 2005, 08:40 PM
yes perhaps some fog effects.. dont know... for the glass off the cockpit dont believe I´m going to put one... with the reflects etc, the details of pilot will desapears :(In that case you should just put glass into the rear window. This way we'll still be able to see the pilot clearly. And on the front side you should at least try to make the illusion of glass around the borders of the window, putting some reflections there and leaving the middle part completely transparant. Dunno how to do this though...

Good luck!

01 January 2005, 08:46 PM
An absolutely stunning scene!

I agree on adding a touch of fog to help separate the ships from the buildings. Other then that, it's a bloody masterpiece.:applause:

01 January 2005, 09:23 PM
bravo! just bravo! I wish i make pictures like that someday. Nothing to say more now... sory:shrug:

01 January 2005, 09:28 PM
Bah... j'remballe mes gauilles... you killing me man... :banghead:

Separatly... I find all parts awesome... but together... I'm speechless... I return too cook... that's a certainly a better way for me :scream: hahahahahaha...

Seriously... I'm fan... the feeling of depth is marvellous... nothing more to say, remain me just to watch your art my friend

01 January 2005, 09:46 PM
Fantastic pic ! Really a great work !

you could put a little bit of dirt and scratch like this in the corners...

you still can see in the middle without any problem...

01 January 2005, 10:47 PM
very nice work. maybe some more contrast [dark/light] will give more power in your picture. keep going!~

01 January 2005, 10:53 PM
Really nice ! I really like the compo and the awesome textures you made ... that lighting from the right is nice too...bref c que du beau ca !

01 January 2005, 10:57 PM

I just needed to try, hope you're not angry because I touch you pic...
sorry sorry ;)

maybe it's too much...but I'm sure a little fog could be nice...

bon ok mon reflet y pu du ku...un coup de brosse comme ca...

01 January 2005, 11:33 PM
I think you need more contrast [ light on ships and dark on docs]..good effect of smoke.

01 January 2005, 11:36 PM
baby: What to say?... you give really a "more dynamic" view to my scene, really like your test man  , sometime its good to ear out there what people see.. and that you "dont see"... too much hours on the same image...

maintenant le probleme c´est que si je fais des retouches d´apres ton test c´est du plagiat de ma propre image?.. j´en perd mon french héhé :applause:

todd4cgi: baby give me good ideas...

NicoDN: je n´y manquerai pas.

Alex200: yes its a idea that I´ve tested... good idea

c'est ma philo... :)

01 January 2005, 12:06 AM
yes! this is the one i waiting for ! you don't disaapoint me ! very great entry! and baby's retouch is very good too! i don't know what to add to your image! great work

01 January 2005, 02:56 AM
Yeah Baby! Looks much cooler with the fog, real world like, otherwise I can't
separate the rear ships from the background either. The slight ochre warming
of the fog makes the background slightly muddy and decayed looking which
contrasts nicely with the blue and crisper details on the ships. The fog has
a burned smoke feel making the scene feel more dangerous. Will be nice to see
the action/story details and comp final.

my 3d entry (

01 January 2005, 09:23 AM
high level of texture

01 January 2005, 09:49 AM
damn this is good:love:

textures are uber sweet, models are just the right detail andt he effects and lighting make it look totally cool.

maybe one small comment, alltho I feel a bit out of my league commenting on something like this hehe.
considering you added a thick layer of dirt of the side of the window of the foreground cockpit, shouldn't the central bit ot window be a bit dirtier?
even if it had been wiped clean, there would still be some stains distorting the specularity, dn't you think?

Latest Update: Post Effects and Compositing: Composed image (

layers collapsed :) now I will let this image sleeping 1-2 day, its a system I use when I´m working some time on the same image. I take again the image with a fresh look. I will paint some details, add a global tone to the entire image etc...
All of your modeling work is very well done. The foreground elements need seperation from the background - as everything gets lost in a barrage of detail - (the eye does not know where to focus). Remember it is the big picture that counts - not the little details. So much focus on this challenge is placed on the finite elements, that I begin to wonder if people remember how to sell a concept on story (rather than modeling skill). Nevertheless, we are all here to learn. I have no c&c about the models or lighint, all that is very well done. Just the depth of the scene. Take a look at this: Scene from ALien 4 ( - Another scene from Alien 4. ( You will notice how the background differentiates from the foreground. Some use of obscurity will bring final balance to your lovely work. :)

01 January 2005, 05:23 PM
Awesome! bravo! it is really impressive. I reaaally like baby's touch ups (don't missinterpret those words :D ) , gives another dimension to your picture. Keep pushing your work forward!

01 January 2005, 06:33 PM
hey is nice to see all your pogress.
it looks too much better.

01 January 2005, 07:05 PM
This is a very well constructed piece. My suggestion would be to try and change the value of the background from the ships. As it is they kind of blend into each other to much. Maybe just some specular on the ships would give it punch.
I really like this one.

01 January 2005, 07:18 PM
I love your work so far but I think the others are on to something with the foreground/background issue. Another aspect that I think contributes to the problem is that everything looks a bit static. The ships don't convey any sense of speed. Baby's retouch with the fog helps a bit but the first thing I noticed is that cockpit and pilot in the extreme forground seem motionless. I'm sure it's difficult to capture the right sense in a still image but with him being so close to the camera, It almost seems like he needs a little blur or something. Anyting that will give him a sense of motion. Otherwise it's like he's just hanging there.

Excellent modeling and texturing I must say.

01 January 2005, 10:31 PM
thanks all... yes I´m going to use the "baby´s" ideas, give more motion to the scene, will also add some sparks to the reactors to made them as "heaviest-machinery"... and also add some reflects to the cockpit... a darker tone to the entire image etc... well, I think I will post the final-image tomorrow...

01 January 2005, 02:20 PM (

final image...

01 January 2005, 02:43 PM
Awesome! Congrats on finishing with such a great image!

01 January 2005, 03:13 PM
I agree. Very good image
I just think the colors could be a bit brighter such as those in the touch-up of baby, it gives more life to the scene, and everything seems to be blended in.

However, it still remains a fantastic image as is.

01 January 2005, 03:25 PM
yeah it looks better...less agressive for the eye than the previous add more dynamics, depth and colors are soft !

cool update !

01 January 2005, 03:28 PM
cool you have an online portfolio?

01 January 2005, 03:33 PM
pitetre que les etincelles auraient pu etre un peu moins grosses...

01 January 2005, 03:34 PM
Top 10 stuff here

01 January 2005, 03:34 PM
Absolutely incredible work! The detail, the design... all of it is top drawer!

For me, it's unfortunate that all of that great work is obscured because of, what appears to be, not the best lighting. Granted, it could be a combination of the BG being too similar a tone to the smoke, the FG cockpit image and any dirt or grime anywhere else in the image. Regardless of the lighting the almost monochromatic use of colour is tending to flatten this otherwise phenomenal piece out.

In your concept sketch you had a light coming from the bottom of the launch bay structure. I think doing that, alone, would give the separation that the BG, MG and FG needs to finalize this piece and make it an early favorite.

But, as has been said by others... if you do nothing this is still an amazing entry that has raised the bar.

Kudos for all you great work!

01 January 2005, 03:56 PM
Hi Stephane!
Man now this is one hell of an image, very awesome job mate! 100 x  :applause:

01 January 2005, 04:04 PM
Hey stefgrafx!... amazing job mate... good luck!

01 January 2005, 04:46 PM
Absolutely stunning image - congratulations on a great final:thumbsup:

01 January 2005, 05:20 PM
Good job but i think it's look like gurbejs coming of instead of smoke:)

01 January 2005, 05:27 PM
Your image it I discover likes me much, which super work, your
composition final selected good and the colors well considering,
good luck.

01 January 2005, 05:42 PM
Any updates coming? I'd like to see the changes come from the artist himself.

Excellent work!

01 January 2005, 06:14 PM
cgkrusty: After testing differents final renders I choose this tone, its a ambience I have in mind since the first test... I will post later a black-white version... for me it give more dramatism and contrasts to the scene... but I anderstand that my choice will not match "all" the choices of people out there ;)

The B-W version...

01 January 2005, 08:38 PM
Stéphane C,

I like your image a lot -- the texturing is amazing. Have you thought about adding some depth of field? It took me a minute to distinguish the foreground from the background. The graphical elements are very strong in this piece, but the imagery would be clearer if you establish a foreground, middle ground, background.

Just an observation, good work

01 January 2005, 11:37 PM
hello Stephane,
very dynamic image...the colored one is better. and don't let baby touch your image(LOL...i'm kidding!). all i can say is days are few...just keep rendering. wish you all the best!

01 January 2005, 12:01 AM
hey man , It is a professional job . u did this job by putting so much pain . U made a great scenes and models . I like it .

Good luck dear .

But u know what I mean ... !

01 January 2005, 12:08 AM
a little detail...

in the corner of window...the glass shouldn't be as shiny where you have the dirt...

01 January 2005, 12:09 AM
very nice final image...your work in textures is remarkable as well your modeling!...very good job!

01 January 2005, 12:18 AM
mschrd110: dont think so.. and I send the Hi-Res image.. so  I must start others things...

shiela_G: No problem with baby... its a bad-french-boy as me ;)

thanks all

01 January 2005, 09:42 AM
Very good scene. I liked this style very much.

If you have time please check my entries. I need some comments.

01 January 2005, 01:32 AM
nice, in bw I like it, but in colour i love it;-)
hope to see you in finals

01 January 2005, 05:26 PM
Your modeling and texturing looks great. The only things that bothers me is the ships all have the same texture maps, as if they're exact clones of each other with burn marks etc all the same.

As well, the ships arn't seperating from the background, at first glance I thought they were structures that were attached to the large wall. I think part of the problem is the blueish entrance at the nose of the top ship is blending into the nose itself. Some placement and color seperation might help.

01 January 2005, 07:02 PM
U DID IT MAN!! LOOKS PERFECT!!.. cant discriBE WITH WORDS!!... awefully awesome textureing and unbarebly detail modeling... just aweomse!!... man i wanted to wish u luck, but guess u wont b needing that... guess if i was the judge i wud proudly hand u over the first prize...great job

This is exactly what i thought. The whole thing blends in way too much. The whole thing needs way more just melts into each other.
Still it's some real fine work, just needs much more contrast.
It also would have been nice to see some sky.not just wall.Possible a piece of the sky just over a part of the wall. It's too confined looking now.
Just give the textures more contrast so they set them selves apart from the wall more and add some sky,you got time.
Still real good work though.

Kylebrn: I "retouch" my image with a LaCie screen and calibrated with a "X-rite DTP 92 monitor calibration" Its not the best hadware-software to calibrate a screen, but it give you a good-idea of what you get in printing... perhaps your screen is not well calibrated... or my image really need more contrast ;)

baby: Euu... ben... finalement.. mm... je crois que je suis garré en double file la.. hein... héhé

01 January 2005, 09:58 PM
Yes my screen as your's is fine.I mean the colors of your textures are too much the same. The wall and the ships are blending in too much. You need more seperate color pallette for your models. They merge too much as one.I cant see the difference from the ships to the back wall.

01 January 2005, 01:30 AM
This is a great image, but the black and white version creates more of the the contrast problem. I recommentd the color vesion for the final. But if you do decide to keep the BW version, i'd make the ships lighter and the docking thingy darker to seperate the layers a bit more.

01 January 2005, 03:47 AM
Dude I love this image....I think it looks killer as have done true justice to your vote is stay with the B&W as well ...will surely stand out from the crowd....just one mans opinion..

01 January 2005, 05:47 AM
Dang bro,
This was so a shoe-in... I'm not sure if you have enough contrast between the ships and the backround architecture as other people have mentioned. The subtle orange light that is emitting from the ship's console onto the pilot's face could have been punched up even more, infact, a bright light source to the left of the image could be depicting a battle without even seeing one. This would just make your ships sing with color, thus seperating them from the BG.

I would love to see some more life in the ships. I think you could win.

01 January 2005, 12:01 PM
WoW, WoW? wOw, very great pic, all elements are very detailled, and the choice of textures is very good, it's very good mechanical pic, good work, professional work

01 January 2005, 12:15 PM
I would suggest adding a slight difference in tint between the background and foreground, and perhaps a little bit of red glow suggesting fire where the sparks are coming from. Oh, and the sparks look a little bit large. And a little bit of photoshop work on the levels and curves might make the image "pop" a little more, it looks a little gray and washed out. Outstanding image regardless.

01 January 2005, 12:27 PM
Hey Stepane,I have to mention that the contrast between the ships and the backround architecture is just not enough, not nearly enough. And it hurts the overall look very much.It all melts in as one, very difficult to make out the ships from the wall. It's top 10 to me,maybe top 5 as is.But if you can only show more contrast you could be top 3.Just here to help with a good old fashioned crit.
Plus where is the pivotal moment I missing something? Still good luck to you,you have got some real good work here.:)

01 January 2005, 02:09 PM
In my opinion stick with the colour version, you seem to be losing energy and the feeling of motion with the B&W version.

01 January 2005, 06:35 PM
I followed and enjoyed your thread. Amazing.

Good Luck,
