Welcome aboard, and good luck with your image. What 3d program are you using, I am not using one of the bigger name 3d apps (ie maya,3ds,etc.) but I am confidant I can complete this challenge.
My space opera thread
im using a program called anim8or (www.anim8or.com) it has a pretty good modeling system but its rendering componet is lacking greatly. (it cant handle to many lights and shadows)
ok so here is the start of one of my small fighters.

Looks like a good start, how does anim8or handle Subdivisions as in SDS? I mean are you planning to smoothen that mesh or keep it blocky?
No concept art yet? :P But atleast you've started modeling! Keep up the good work!
it has a few types of subdivision options i wont actually smooth this mesh out to much but i will a little, i have it really blocky right now so its easier to see all the angles.
this is a concept i made with basic shapes just to see if i like how i plan on laying out my scene.
This is a concept drawing of my main battle ship.
