Title: The Fleeing Ealypian

In the outer edges of a bright galaxy lies planet Ealyp. Near Ealyp, there is a moon that is well known for its rich resources in Omreht, a substances so molecularly tight and can be easily manipulated makes it a valuable commodities for building indestructible spaceships. Because of the impending war, the Kromans, knew of these invaluable substance dispatch a fleet of Kroman's space vessels to the only place known to have it. The Ealyps aware of this beforehand, has started evacuating their people away to other star systems, away from the creeping Kromans. However the Kromans arrived sooner than expected and now they are running out of time. In order to protect the remaining tranport vessels a few stayed behind to man the defense turrets in order to slow down the Kromans so that the others may survive. The kromans has a planet destruction weapon known as Hellatorius. Staying behind means dying to this weapon and the remaining Ealyps know this. And so they sacrificed their lives in order to save their own kind.

Hi guys & gals, this is my first entry into cgchallenge and i don't know anyone around the forum and hopefully by the end of this i might be able to know a few friends and learn tons of stuff.
My main motivation is to learn and improve my work. Good luck to the other entries, they are awesome! Here goes:

Idea 1: A group of defenders in a distant star system, protecting a passageway against innumerable odds. They(the defenders) do not wear or tire as ceaseless amount of attackers throw themselves to break through the passage. Classic concept :)

Concept sketch will be uploaded tmw.

10 October 2004, 08:57 AM (

composition concept, please tell me wich one is better? or any other better ideas?

10 October 2004, 08:59 AM (

this is the concept for some of the alien ships, ok basically the story is like this, theres a planet in a faraway star system which holds the key to un ravel the secrets of all there is in the universe and so these large number of alien races launch an attack on the planet hoping to break in but the planet is protected by a system of defensive turrets and also spaceships. the odds of holding the planet defense is minute but still the defenders stands tall.. sort of like the story of spartan holding off the attacks of the persians. i will include certain greek/roman element into the design of the defensive turret. the alien races will very in designs as they come from diff planets. please give your comments...

10 October 2004, 10:45 AM
I like the idea of Thermopylae. Though the story of the Spartan being told that the Persians would blacken the skies with their arrows, to which he replied, "good, it's a hot day, we can fight in the shade." is really down to a Thespian who fought there. Thespes was famous throughout Greece for its fine actors.

10 October 2004, 11:11 AM
The story is interesting so far.

I'll stick around ;)

11 November 2004, 11:12 AM
no comments on the composition? matter not, i think ill go for no2. might change the camera view later on..on to ships concept..

11 November 2004, 01:23 PM (

colored version of concept2

11 November 2004, 01:38 PM (

the shield and spear thingy is the defense of the planet, while the other 3 ships on the right is the attacking force. the gateway is the escape path for the evacuated ships to go through.
im still wondering whether i should add mechas to the scene, as the defenders of the planet??? any comments????

ps: sorry for the bad scans :P

comments???? anyone??

11 November 2004, 07:26 PM (

testing to see how it would turn out
i figure i would better start to model and get the modelling ball rollin..

11 November 2004, 11:24 PM
Can't quite understand the concepts, but judging from the modeling this should be a blast :) keep rocking and good luck!

11 November 2004, 01:59 AM
Thx for your reply borro, ok.. Here is a refined story,

There is this planet called Ealyp that are on the outer rim of the galaxy which has vast resources on several moons nearby that other alien race are crazy about. It has a high count of Omreht, an iron substance used to build interstellar spacecrafts. So the strongest alien empire of them all lead the attack to capture the planet and of course, destroy the inhabitants as well. The Ealypians know about this attack and starts evacuating thru the gateway. However because the Alien Empire arrives sooner than expected, a few remaining stayed behind and fought with the aliens, sacrificing themselves to defend the remaining escapees.

11 November 2004, 04:28 PM (

updated version of the escape gateway, will tweak it some more, what do you think? anything i should add?

11 November 2004, 04:35 PM
Like your concept and models so far, the gateway a bit skeleton like, keep going:thumbsup:

11 November 2004, 04:36 PM
ooooh cool cool... keep modeling looks great

11 November 2004, 05:07 PM (

this gate is blocky kinda gate, squarish, should i go for this....

11 November 2004, 05:10 PM (

... this one is more organic and roundish corners, more to the alien culture, wich one is better? remember this gateway should have a hint of greek architecture, so if anyone has references to greek/roman designs let me know tq :)

tq borro and gunilla, you guys are doing great too ;)

11 November 2004, 05:53 PM
Looking at your sketches I'm more for the organic one, eventually some minor details can be a little bit more geometrical... wait fo the next step !

11 November 2004, 08:08 PM
I prefer the second one too. As was said, our (human) concept of tech (angles, edges) can be incorporated within the organic lines.

11 November 2004, 07:13 AM (

minor modelling, going for the organic feel, making the top of the "trojan" helmet sharp.. also any ideas for the space tunnel thingy? suppose to be a space gateway warping tunnel thing... @-@, i will model more tonight, gotta sleep now..

11 November 2004, 06:56 PM
...The Ealypians know about this attack and starts evacuating thru the gateway. However because the Alien Empire arrives sooner than expected, a few remaining stayed behind and fought with the aliens, sacrificing themselves to defend the remaining escapees.
It's funny: I had almost the exact same idea for my piece, but at the last minute I swapped it for another concept. Now I'm really going to be interested in seeing how this turns out.

11 November 2004, 07:39 AM
lol, thats not the first time i heard that, another guy did a same concept as me as well. Hopefully I can at least do a great piece of this challenge to justify the battle of Thermopylae.

11 November 2004, 07:48 AM
Well I think you chose the right version of the Gate. Now for the space warp use lot's of light cuz that's what it is... refraction of light and time... and to best show the effect take a ship turn soft selection on, pick some verteces and move them toward the Gate to achieve a great effect :) ok keep it up!

11 November 2004, 08:05 AM
I'm sure you've probably moved past this, but I actully like the blocky gate. the non blocky gate looks un polished to me. prehaps if you keep the organic look but some how tighten up the insets or add control segments to tighten up the -shift in the bevel. mostly in the forward facing tabs (or what ever I may call them, the rest actully looks really good, just those parts bother me)

rock on and keep it up. ;)

11 November 2004, 07:09 AM
Borro: Thats a good idea, gonna try that out

Bookmanblues: Are u talking about the "wing" part? Im not sure which part you are talking about? Anyways heres an update..

11 November 2004, 07:26 AM (

this is the updated gateway design..
not too happy with it..
however i refined some parts of the gateway so it looks more solid.

im thinking of putting spikes on the wings thingy, see next post..

11 November 2004, 07:30 AM (

spike version... i plan to make the spike like sort of sucked in to the middle, here its just straight down.. i pretty like this version since it was the original concept.. but right now it looks like crap :P

11 November 2004, 07:53 AM (

ahh... heres a better version of the gateway.. the spikes are more align to the center of the gate..tell me what you think!

11 November 2004, 04:49 PM (

here is a more cleaner look, got rid of the extra "wing" and spikes. Okay gonna leave this be for now and going to modelling the mothership(fun part).. stay tuned

11 November 2004, 04:51 PM (

close up on the gateway "headpiece" which support to look like trojan helmet... hmm

11 November 2004, 03:55 AM
looking good so far, IOM, I like the blocky version of the gateway, but, I you go with the organic one, I prefer it without spikes.

Also I want to add, the Alien Spaceship desing if AMAZING, I saw a lot of spaceships in the space opera threads, but the main ship of the concept has a real cool shape, I hope the 3d version keep that speed and dangerous feeling.

keep it up!

11 November 2004, 02:42 PM (

i drew this on a notepad and the scan quality is quite bad, but basically it is a medium sized ship, that shoots a laser/energy beam that when hits a planet it will disrupt the water concentration and breaks the molecule into hydrogen and blows up the entire planet. To destroy a planet, around 9 of these ships are needed.

11 November 2004, 10:45 AM (

at last, started modelling again.. this time modelling another object, the "peashooter" so called because compared to the other ships this is one of the smallest ;) here it is initial stages...

11 November 2004, 07:52 PM (

updated smoothing the front part of the ship, the rest is still in progress... working really slow here..

11 November 2004, 10:59 PM
nice model! i like your concept so far! interesting and great! But for your models, IMHO, you shud reduce the number of polygons. The high poly count makes the ships too organic. if you are using nurbs, then you should control the edges to make it more "metal" and "sharp edged". :)

other than tat, keep up the good work ! all da best dude :buttrock:

11 November 2004, 12:52 AM

nice story and modeling. Looks very promising. I would recommend that you work on the composition a bit more so that you know exactly what you need to model and not. This could save you a lot of work. Might even do a sketch in color.

good luck and peace

11 November 2004, 02:16 AM
spyder: I always use subd, ;), as for the organic looking thingy its because i have not defined the corners yet. Expect more updates soon.

Hiespike: Thats a good idea. I might just do that. Thanks:thumbsup: !

11 November 2004, 01:53 PM (

smooth version, what do you think?

11 November 2004, 01:54 PM (

closeup shot for the mid section of the ship... any ideas? critics?

11 November 2004, 04:54 PM
the gateway looking awesome man.. very menacing at the same time.

11 November 2004, 04:18 PM
This gateway is looking excellent. I love the organic feel to it. Great process your showing. Keep up the good work. :)

11 November 2004, 10:37 PM
Been not posting for awhile, right now going back to basics and learning how to draw anatomy figures and starting to sketch circles and squares and round. But ill still be doing this challenge however will be slow.. hopefully i can finish this challenge in time. Good luck to everyone out there! Hang on!

11 November 2004, 06:21 PM
I just got back from another state and I saw expose 2 and d'artiste for sale.. omg I can't wait to buy it but don have that much money to spent on a book alone... sob sob.. Now I'm fired up and I wanna aim for getting the expose 2 prize!! Argh!!! Here I come, going to do the mother ship sketch and revamped the design for the peashooter and gateway maybe.. Stay tuned!

11 November 2004, 08:16 PM
The more I look at the ship the more I don like it, hemm any comments ?? I redefined the shape and add more detail this time. What do you think? I think I am going to go with this design and thrash the old one. Learnt a valuable lesson, do your concept art well before start to model! :scream: Other challengers are already modelling away and some even started texturing.. Im still here! Argh!!

11 November 2004, 08:29 PM (

previously known as peashooter, now renamed to "hellatarious" which means warlike in greek i think. Going to start modelling ASAP! ps: tell me what you think about the new design..

11 November 2004, 09:47 PM
Definately like the second design better :) Keep it up!

11 November 2004, 09:54 PM
I agree with Borro, i prefer the second, more dynamic. :arteest:

Nice work!

11 November 2004, 11:52 AM (

blocking out the shapes.. this time i have a clearer idea of what i am modelling..

11 November 2004, 07:43 AM (

back view, block stage, my flow is to block out the shapes first and then add the detail later..

11 November 2004, 07:45 AM (

front part, same model but different view, im really liking where this is going. What do you think? Any suggestions?? Im thinking how do I make the moving parts, use a gear or some sort of alien tubes? Im really lost in doing mechanical stuff.. Please help!! I want to make a connector in short, connecting the wings and body. See the next pic to see my version..

11 November 2004, 07:57 AM (

the "gears" is marker by the red circle. basically it is 3 cylinders string together. thats it. and theres another flatter cylinder on the body of the ship, to rotate it in another axis wihch cannot be seen here.

11 November 2004, 09:27 AM (

Another view of the moving part, notice the circular flat gear that moves it up and down. What do you think? How should I improve it?

11 November 2004, 02:37 AM
awesome new peashooter. Can't wait to see it finished and in action!

11 November 2004, 09:28 AM (

modelled the bridge and refined the wings part.. not much of an update tho.. one question, besides using meshmooth and subdivision in editpoly is there any other way to make the object looks smooth, esp for squarish object like space ships? i don wan to spend my time chamfering most of the edges.. any other solution?

11 November 2004, 12:22 PM (

ok im done modelling the low poly version of this ship. added gi to show it better. What do you think? Moving on to model other objects, probably a bigger space ship..

11 November 2004, 10:50 AM (

ok concept for the mothership called "divinitus" which means heaven in greek. Sorry for the scan quality as i have crappy scanner(its not even mine) anyways i will move on to modelling soon!

11 November 2004, 11:21 AM (

Not much of an update here just to show the basic blocks I am going to build the ship from.

11 November 2004, 11:41 AM
wow I love the design!
never seen something like this before!

can't wait to see them textured!

11 November 2004, 08:46 PM
hey very interesting ship designs mate... keep it up man

11 November 2004, 09:37 PM
Great work so far. I love the modeling ideas. Those ship designs are bad @$$! More more mroe!:bounce:

11 November 2004, 03:37 AM
great desing on that ships, I like all of them!

11 November 2004, 07:18 PM
Divinitus is particularly good. Novel, believable, menacing - A difficult combination to get.

11 November 2004, 07:43 PM (

divinitus main cannon, i modelled the cannon parts and some front part of the ship. trying to go for the industrial kinda of look under a sleek armor. any suggestions? critics???

11 November 2004, 09:15 PM (

Some details on the main cannon and tusk-like thing there... This view is front below. Any comments?

11 November 2004, 09:18 PM (

Divinitus from the front, here you can see the 'tusk' and cannon. Be aware that it is still a lowpoly version.

11 November 2004, 02:16 PM
I love the intricate details visible in the side view tail. Very nice! :) More please ;)

11 November 2004, 10:21 AM
AMAZING... your design style is really great. love it !

11 November 2004, 08:13 PM (

divinitus modelling continued.. Ill keep modelling but for now I have done little by little. Hopefully I can finish it in time. Good luck to all.

11 November 2004, 08:54 PM
For some reason you have now made comments on my work twice, which I appriciate SO much!!! I like your work as well, very unique designs, especially your ship. I wish I had the patients to make some drawing sketches first, and apply them in my scene as you have done. I constantly do this; :banghead: , because of failures made in my "sit-down-and-model-right-out-of-imagination" kind of working. Failures that just take so long to repair, as I suddenly realize how bad something, made too many "undos" ago, looks. And my last save is always too old for just reloading an older mesh. But thatīs the way it is...:)

Keep modelling great stuff, work hard, only two months to go.....

12 December 2004, 02:20 AM
I learned it the hard way about doing sketches. For other they can model on the fly but for me I have to sketch out first whats on my mind before I can model them. And it helps with the sense of proportion and details! ALways sketch first! Best of luck, I hope I can finish on time.

12 December 2004, 08:01 AM (

Divinitus modelling update, blocked version not smoothed yet. Still low poly and need to add more detail to the center and back of ship.

12 December 2004, 08:04 AM (

Bottom view. Comments???

12 December 2004, 08:33 AM
Hi there! please show it with some different lighting, because it's hard to see and judge the shape(ot it's just my old monitor:) ). From what I see it looks good, I wouldn't change it, maybe only make it a little bit wider.

12 December 2004, 05:40 PM
I agree I think that giving the lighting a kick up would help us to be capable of seeing the details you have put into this. Waiting for more updates!

12 December 2004, 04:48 PM
Sorry all, been out from the internet for 2 weeks so no update during this time. However I have not been idle. Check out these updates...

12 December 2004, 04:51 PM (

blocked..not smoothed yet

12 December 2004, 04:53 PM (

divinitus smoothed, i promise you guy will get to see the clearer version, at this stage its still pretty unclear due to the modelling..

12 December 2004, 04:56 PM (

This is my 2nd biggest ship, dubbed afflictio which means "pain". The size is about 1/5 of the divinitus size and looks quite mean :)

12 December 2004, 04:57 PM
Hey, I'm from south east asia too! (thailand to be exact.) Never seen any 3d artist from Malaysia before. Your work is looking good.

Good luck man. :applause:

12 December 2004, 04:59 PM (

This is the concept for Salutaris, the protective mechanism that is protecting the planey from the invaders. It symbolizes the shield and the spear of the roman army. The inset is the updated composition sketch. More to come on this..

* Edit double post *

12 December 2004, 05:58 PM (

Mozee are the fighter ships, small fast and deadly. The concept are simple, a triangular shaped metal piece flying around with twin lasers.

Here you can see my concept for the Hellatorius destructive lasers and the logo for the Kroma alien race.

12 December 2004, 06:01 PM (

The finished model.

12 December 2004, 06:04 PM (

Composition of the whole scene, a mini painting... looks really bad atm. Just to have an idea of how it will look like in colour.

12 December 2004, 06:08 PM (

Colour concept for the texturing work, the color scheme for the Kroma ships are mostly dark with bluish glow, hopefully this will give off a nice effect.

12 December 2004, 06:10 PM (

Divinitus colour concept. Black black black...

12 December 2004, 06:13 PM
*Edited, double post. *

12 December 2004, 06:16 PM (

The gateway colour concept, a touch of egyptian colours. ;)

12 December 2004, 06:18 PM (

Hellatorius colour concept, looks nice :)

12 December 2004, 06:21 PM (

The mozee colour concept, hopefully this will make a good transition into texturing work..

12 December 2004, 06:23 PM (

Salutaris colour concept, fiery shield..

12 December 2004, 06:26 PM (

Colour concept for the transport!!!, all white as opposed to the black!

12 December 2004, 06:33 PM
some cool forms and mixture of hard surface and organic shapes. also concept work is great basis to build on. i'm going to keep following this thread :)

12 December 2004, 06:36 PM (

Starting the compositing..

12 December 2004, 06:39 PM (

Compositing more, adding the blocks of the ships...

12 December 2004, 06:44 PM (

Added the background, the sea of stars and several galaxy can be seen. I don quite like the sun at this point, will look forward to render a better one. Btw the stars is made in photoshop.

12 December 2004, 06:47 PM (

Added salutaris, the defense system.

12 December 2004, 06:49 PM (

The texture for Beymoon, not looking that good atm. Need more work on that too.

12 December 2004, 06:51 PM (

Putting in the ships to get a sense of scale. Don't mind the colour and lighting. Arghh not enough time for me!! Work work..

So sorry for all these influx of posts, the images are all saved in my hdd and I didnt have access to internet connection for the past 2 weeks so I had to post them all up in 1 night. As for the starfield, I refered to Greg Martins excellent tutorial on creating starfields and nebulae, you can access it from here:

Good luck to those who are still in the final month and hope that I make it to the finish line.

12 December 2004, 06:59 PM
Warit: Nice to meet you, Ive never met a 3d artist from Thailand either ;)

I checked out your GSO, like the clean design of your ships, good luck and all the best. Hopefully we make it to the finish line. :argh:

Ereitz: Thanks for your comments, so true about the concept thingy, going to do same for you ;)

Oh yeah just got my expose 2 a few days ago! WOOOO HOOOOO!!! :buttrock:

12 December 2004, 07:43 PM
Been a while since my last visit - you have really done some cool progress! I like your modeling style a lot

Are you going to keep the blue-brown colorset? I think it could look really good - looking forward to see some textures and good luck!

12 December 2004, 10:10 PM
Looks like things are coming along well with your entry... your ships would fit in my continium quite well! :P Good job... keep it up!

12 December 2004, 08:26 AM
Gunilla: The colourset is not fixed yet, I'm really bad in texturing. It can change anytime. Your entry is going well too :)

||) |V| |^|: Lol don steal my ships now :P jk!

12 December 2004, 08:30 AM (

Now testing the engine glow effects, right now I have 3 choices, omni light attenuation + fog light, glow effect, and video post. I don't really like video post because its hard for me to control. I would prefer the earlier two. Here is the omni light method..

12 December 2004, 08:34 AM (

This one is video post, notice the glow went right through the tail wing. I like the colours tho..

12 December 2004, 08:35 AM (

Glow effects.

12 December 2004, 08:46 AM (

I just read up on using rays together with glows, seems to give off a nice effect, I like it!!

12 December 2004, 09:05 PM
Lookin' good so far.Keep up the good work!

12 December 2004, 03:18 PM (

base texture, hoped to rely more of the effects on lighting.. any comments to make it look better?

12 December 2004, 06:51 PM (

Update on the texture, I don really have any idea on the material except that it is kinda of like a shiny material, a volcanic rock polished to perfection. That is why it is black. And I also added the glow to give it more life.

12 December 2004, 07:36 AM (

Updated on Hellatorius, the base texture is not detail as it will be seen only from far away. Heavy use of glow will be used.

12 December 2004, 04:26 PM
more to come, stay tuned!:scream:

12 December 2004, 09:06 PM (

This texture has too many lights, abandoning it...

12 December 2004, 09:17 PM (

Can anyone tell me why the bump lines are so pixelated??? PLzzzzz? I think Im gonna dump the bump lines in favor of something better.

12 December 2004, 09:19 PM (

Removed some lights, get rid of bump and rendered with glow fx. What do you think?

12 December 2004, 10:05 PM
I must say, your concept of this whole scene is very well organized and depict a vast and massive civilization. I love your ships, however i think you can add more details to the textures. SpaceShips are usually bright and silverish but your theme or dark and shiny glowly is a rather unique choice of theme.

I bid you luck in your progress and hope you will finish in time. All the best

01 January 2005, 03:39 AM
looking great man. I feel akin to your ideas. Keep at it. Have a wonderful new year!

01 January 2005, 06:30 PM (

Supposedly final texturing for the afflictio battleship. I have a strong feeling that it will bear some changes in the future, until then I have to texture the other ships. Hopefully I will make it to the finish line! Good luck and Happy new year 2005 to everyone.

01 January 2005, 07:40 PM (

Hellatorius texture, hopefully to be finalised. It is not detail because the model will be viewed from a distance.

01 January 2005, 07:43 PM (

When i was texturing the mothership, divinitus, I didnt quite like the feel of it and the shape of the ship doesnt seem to be menacing enough, therefore I bring you the Neo-Divinitus!! Will model asap... gawd its 14 days left and Im still modelling :P

01 January 2005, 09:25 PM
I know the feeling... Good work though I really like the sketch.. shoulda be really tight!

01 January 2005, 07:42 AM (

Started box modelling. More to come soon!

01 January 2005, 06:11 PM
Greetings tzktime! :D

Some really great work here, I really like your ship designs.

Looking forward to the final image, keep it up! :)

01 January 2005, 06:40 PM

Nice job so far man. This is coming out nicely. Keep at. I am wondering what types of effects you plan on using in the final comp to compliment all of those wickid ships. :)

01 January 2005, 07:59 AM
There will be lots of effects, however it will partially be determined by the time limit imposed! Stay tuned!!:bounce:

01 January 2005, 08:54 PM
Composition sketch lookd very promising. I like the dynamism of it. Hope you will reach this in 3d. Good luck!

Just found out that my pc is infected by severals ( yes, more than 1) trojan virus. So work might slow down abit as I need to flush them all out of the system. -_-; Damnation..

01 January 2005, 03:15 AM (

Last of the lot, the neo divinitus color concept. Will be texturing this evening.. Rushing to complete this piece!!

A damaged ship takes the hit from the planetary defense.

01 January 2005, 05:12 PM (

Done the texture for planet Bey(the planet at the top in the composition).
Used up alot of hours just to come out with this. Its not that good but decent enough for half-view shot.

01 January 2005, 07:59 PM (

Textured the space debris. Several layers on top of each other and use a specular & bump maps. Theme seems to be red.

01 January 2005, 08:13 PM (

Another version! More realistic? and darker...

01 January 2005, 10:30 PM
Well I think that the first version is more realistic, but yes, should be a but darker.

Your scene is coming on just great! I really like the colors your going for. Good luck in completion

01 January 2005, 08:51 AM
Adrain you have done a fantastic job... I cannot wait to see your final, should be killer.

01 January 2005, 09:32 AM (

Latest composition, will fix the lighting and more post effects will be done.

01 January 2005, 09:37 AM
Nice progress, my crits now are:
1. too many colors in the starfield, make it in one color palette, but different saturations and brightnesses.
2. a bit of motion blur whould emphasize the dynamism of it

keep workin' you can do it on time!:)

01 January 2005, 07:11 PM (

Make alot of corrections, added more afflictios, corrected lighting, change lazer material abit, and others. It didnt look as chaotic as I wanted it to be but thats okay. It looks really good compared to the earlier works.

01 January 2005, 09:15 PM (
